Black-and-white thinking, also known as all-or-nothing thinking, is a cognitive distortion or thinking error that distorts our reality and contributes to anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses. In this video, I'll teach you what black-and-white thinking is and how to change it in order to have better mental health and relationships.

    About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

A very empowering counter to that is learning to change your subconscious programa that lead to those fears.
The Personal Development School is so transformative.
I found Thais (the owner) on RUclips and realized I had an insecure attachment style, fearful avoidant.
I watched her videos for months and my thinking kept changing for the better.
I am learning how to connect to myself, feel my feelings, have less fear!
I give you recognition for realizing its your fear driving you.
I hope for you healing and empowerment!

As someone with CPTSD this is simply the vocabulary I grew up with. My father would say "it's black or white, yes or no, do or die!!!" This is a direct quote he used frequently. So I grew up feeling constantly misunderstood because the vocabulary I had learned was emotionally charged and did not match how I felt. I often upset people with my powerful language and frequently had to re-explain multiple times to make amends 😥

I tell myself I'm busy when I'm actually not, and it's only a few things for me to do on some days. And yet this black and white thinking would make even a few things to do feel like and become days worth of wasted effort in worrying and catastrophizing. Sometimes I can't do the things that used to make me happy, like drawing or even just a videogame, because I'm extremely hard on myself.
Even though I've searched topics like this online, this video was concise and covered everything I needed to know. Thank you!!

Curious Starr have how much do you look at trauma and how it affects the brain when working with others? I ask because for many years I was told what was wrong with me-diagnosed-vs what happened to me.
In this last year I have been beyond enlightened by reading ‘The body keeps the score’, the ‘Polyvagal Theory’, watching ‘The wisdom of trauma’ and ‘The work’. I pray all practitioners will too learn from others who I believe have many answers for so many folks who suffer needlessly-being victimized again by hearing what is wrong with them, vs allowing their pain to be heard and to be told it is NOT your fault!! And Thank you for your heart of service!

"increase our capacity to experience ambiguity" 💗 Getting better all the time. I used to refuse to see people as bad but sometimes they do evil things, and then the pendulum swung to everyone is bad. But neither is true, we're a mix and it's easier for me to see people as more complex now. Crazy when you've grown a little and you look back like "why did I think that way, how many other people still think that way"

Basically my train of thought goes something like this: If I do something and it doesn’t turn out perfect it means it’s bad.
Occasionally, I will have days where I feel great, but usually I’m having intrusive thoughts like “I hate this because I can’t sing perfectly on key“, or “I hate myself because I’m not good enough at (___) “, or “ I don’t have (___) features, therefore I must be ugly”. I guess I’m having an issue with approval-seeking too, (maybe due to heavy bullying, even to this day)..?
I’d really like to start loving myself more because I guess we’ve only got ourselves you know? I sing as a coping mechanism but when I hear my own voice, it always worsens my mood because it’s not perfect.
I feel like my brain cannot have a grey area and a happy medium. It’s pretty frustrating... It may just be how my brain is wired, but it’s causing some really destructive thoughts and I’m still trying to get rid of them.

Black and White thinking is very common with BPD, the intensity of emotions can contribute to distorted thinking and vice versa. But the good news is that it is treatable. You can work towards more helpful/moderate thinking and that can help resolve a lot of those difficult and intense emotions.

Please remember that your brain is full of neuroplasticty, you are not stuck! With all the discoveries and all the compassionate folks that are in the trauma world-there is great hope for our brains, as we learn to ask what happened to you NOT what is wrong-diagnosis-with you.
‘The body keeps the score’ is a beautiful very eyes opening read!
Best to you as you continue to learn and more importantly love yourself just the way you are!!

Black and white thinking can also be a measure of [exerted] control. It's easier then allowing grey, or lo and behold, color, into the picture.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to understand some of my "black and white" thinking patterns and how they have been a huge cause of my mood swings. This was a good explanation to help start my journey in healing. :)
