I had the pleasure of meeting Darin years after his retirement. We met when he agreed to teach my teen son, who had suffered a life-changing stroke, to wakeboard. I was impressed with his humility and professionalism, coming from someone who has accomplished so much in his sport. Thanks for hosting him on the podcast.

Darin mentioned Byerly's Pete as one of many iconic tricks. Agreed. It bent my brain how he was able to make that entire movement look so good. No matter who else does one, I always compare it to Byerly's. It's literally the standard for how they should look in my opinion. One of the first times I got to shoot with Scott in Florida he had already switched to wakeskating full time, but he took a quick set on his wakeboard for fun and he did a Pete that day. It was a bucket list thing to get to see that wizardry happen in real life. That Pete is in his section in Metronome.😊

As expected, great interview guys! D, you sat out the 1996 season, rehabbing your ankle injury from learning switch HS fronts. That's why you didn't even compete at the 1995 Worlds at the end of that season, so you could start on your ankle rehab asap. You came back for the 1997 PWT season, and the first stop that year was in Altamonte Springs where you stuck the Speedball for the first time in competition. I'll repost that clip for everyone to see on the WHF FB & IG page.

Great interview. Love hearing all the back story to so much history. I remember watching him way back in the early 90s. Seeing him do the speedball at Boardstock 99 was amazing. Then handing him the handle at OWC in the early 2000s. Such a powerful riders. Thanks for all you done for the sport Darin.

Raleys are so awesome!! I never understood the hate that raleys got. In my opinion, the whole push against them went hand-in-hand with the idea that the other board sports were only going to embrace wakeboarding and think it was cool if wakeboarding did the same kind of moves as skate and snow. That's the opposite of cool. Raleys and rewinds are the only moves exclusive to wakeboarding. I bet good money that if Darin was doing rewinds instead of raleys back in the day that the same people who hated on raleys would have hated on rewinds.
Anyway, I loved the interview. Darin is the man and I have always been awed by his style.

“Luckily the nickname Scud didn’t really stick”. Seriously, it stuck so hard it’ll likely be engraved on the tombstone.
