I think there should be more of this going forward actually a place to shine for all the nominees for their work. For example, appreciation for Lily and Emma could be given while still having a winner.

John Mulaney was so fucking funny, and goddamn I did not like how Al Pacino announced the Best Picture, it sounds like he wandered out of the pub or a care home, negative suspence.
At that point I was tired and ready to go to sleep, plus they had been showing clips from the Best Picture nominees all night so it doesn’t bother me. What does bother me is Kimmel’s opening monologue being near 30 minutes long, his treatment of RDJ, and his stupid Trump joke at the end. Like can we just keep politics out of these ceremonies? It’s a celebration of film, I don’t care what some two-bit politician has to say on social media.
As a German I absolutely hated the joke about Sandra Hüllers two roles. You could literally saw she smiled through the pain 🙃 We just don’t make jokes about genocide…
I don’t understand why everyone has to guilt trip Emma Stone’s victory for this performance because the competition was strong this year. Can’t we just celebrate these women for being recognized for their acting talents?
I agree. She was spectacular in Poor Things and deserved to win. You can tell this win was very meaningfull to her as she had worked on this project for such a long time.
While it was absolutely stacked this year, I can't believe Killers of the Flower Moon did not take home anything. That was my favorite film of the year.
Oppenheimer Editing was fine but Killers of the flower moon's Editing was PHENOMENAL !!! A 3 and 1/2 hour film flew like breeze. Thelma totally deserved it!!!!
Agreed, that is the category where kotfm should had won. Many movies got subbed by the academy this year and really showed its bias towards Oppenheimer, that while it is a good movie it shouldn't have won in all of these categories. Godzilla minus one is the best example what I'm saying, the movie should have been nominated for another 8 or 9 categories and objectively speaking win in 6 of these, including best picture just because of how much of an achievement it is. But we all know how Hollywood, the academy and these awards tend to work, so yeah lol.
I was genuinely susprised how many of these were first time winners (Nolan, Downey Jr). I thought so many of these people would have won over the years, but just goes to show that amazing actors & directors can often be overlooked despite how well liked they are! As a Ukrainian, I wept after 20 Days in Mariupol won and that speech was an incredibly powerful moment that was much needed halfway through the Oscars.
Kimmel was more Jaded this year than he was before. I dont know if its cuz hes getting older, but he's the kind of person who tells you he enjoys something, only to straight up lie to you in front of other people about it. They need to either beg for Seth MacFarlane back or get John Mulaney as Host, like you said. Also, no comment on Godzilla Minus One winning Best VFX????
The year MacFarlane hosted was not good. His sense of humour is too juvenile and I don’t see him actually enjoying the movies. The reason hosts like Billy Crystal or Whoopi Goldberg did so well was they are actually movie fans. You’ve got to roast the thing with love to engage the audience, who tune in because they care about the art of filmmaking.
@@mhawang8204 I'm almost certain MacFarlane is a Movie guy, but nowhere near as much of a Broadway/Musical guy he really is. Dude loves him those Show Tunes, y'know?

i am so sad that asteroid city didn’t get any nominations at all it felt like a snub since that movie is highly underrated and one of my favorite wes anderson movies but the wonderful story of henry sugar winning was great.
Part of me does wonder if that has anything to do with Wes not being there. I know some fans think the Short nomination was beneath him (I’ve heard it described as more for up-and-coming talent), and if he felt the same way he might have thought the speech would be awkward.
@@thrawncaedusl717 true maybe. i feel in a way that Wes releasing 4 shorts in one year is in a way honouring Roald but also bringing attention to the short film side of the industry which makes me feel as though he wouldn’t see the award as necessary beneath him. i am probably completely wrong but that’s what i was thinking. i do think he is a bit disappointed that asteroid city was not nominated and that’s why he didn’t go to the show.
He has a lot of respect for short films. I think it was the awkwardness of the potential acceptence speech. "Thanks for not nominating me for anything else, bye"
idk about the reaction to the Downey jokes, I thought it was fine and RDJ was pretty game for it. Mostly annoyed that the only joke about Flower Moon is "its too long!." I thought Gladstone was going to win, and I wanted her to. But I didn’t not want Stone to win if that makes sense? She was also fantastic. Hard choice and definitely a surprise. Here’s hoping both actors will have many more opportunities to get recognition for their wonderful work
Ironically, my dad's office had bets on who would win and my dad picked 17 winning nominations, meanwhile he never watched a single film, just looked up reviews... That being said, I think this year was one of the easiest to predict Oscar wins. Totally agree the "Killers of the Flower Moon" should have won at least one category. Lily Gladstone was great promoting this project, and everyone I knew who watched it raved about her performance. Not saying Emma shouldn't have won, but I feel like Lily was a standout performance.
Godzilla Minus One and The Boy and The Heron were the underdogs of the entire ceremony. And they won despite the odds. Even Perfect Days was an underdog too.
I'm not sure what odds you're talking about in the case of the boy and the heron. It won the bafta and the golden globes before this and it is seemingly the critics' favorite so it wasn't an underdog at all. Sure competition was a bit tight with spider-verse but it obviously had a fighting chance. It's not like this is some indie film. It's literally one of the biggest anime films of all time
1:13 I'm proud to say that Miyazaki does deserve to get an award for his animated feature, Boy and the Herron. Thanks to the Ghibli fans really pushing it the best award-winning pick Spider-Verse didn't get much so it's the second award-winning since his first winning, Spirited Away.
3:14 Poor Things finally gets three of them like Costume, Make-Up, and Production Design and it's a massive and beautiful art style of production and great old 19th century costumes and make-up!
I was so happy for Da'vine Joy Randolph because she obviously deserved all the awards she has won during this. But my god... I was horrified seeing all the hate against her after her acceptance speech. So many vile comments just because this woman exists and dares to be an actress. And it's obviously people who have zero knowledge about films because they hadn't even heard of 'The Holdovers', much less watch it to have an opinion on whether she deserves the award or not.
I am sooo happy! Pretty much every single thing went how I wanted it to go, even the categories which were up in the air (which I think is a first?) Was routing for Boy and the Heron, Emma Stone, Godzilla, Zone of Interest sound, and Poor Things to win the technical categories. I would’ve been happy if just one of these happened but they literally all did. So yeah, best Oscar picks in years, and Oppenheimer is easily the best best picture win since Parasite
I agree with you in some aspects but you are objectively speaking wrong in some of these my friend. Godzilla minus one should have been nominated for another 8 or 9 categories and objectively speaking win in 6 of these, including best picture. But we all know how Hollywood, the academy and these awards tend to work on these days, so yeah lol. Oppenheimer still is a very good movie and I'm happy for my boys Cillian and Nolan, but there are areas where other movies like godzilla or the zone of interest were a lot better, and they didn't get nominated or got subbed. I'm making special emphasis on these 2 films : godzilla minus one and the most recent dune part 2 are what the future of cinema should be when you know what you are doing.
totally agreed on the past nominees vs clips for the actors! explaining why the nominees are great is nice and all but i wanted to SEE them be great y'know? there are some truly remarkable performances from 2023 that deserved to be shown on that screen and past oscars clips always stuck with me as a kid and made me want to watch those movies. if the hosts always complain about how boring the oscars are...why not generate interest in the films by teasing each performance??? kinda baffling lol.
I have to say this is the first year I’ve watched the Oscars because it’s the first year I’ve been watching movies consistently and your channel and commentary are a huge reason why I’m becoming a movie person! (Also the reason why I watched succession which was a game changer)
Very telling that they give an Oscar to a documentary about the conflict in Ukraine but cannot even post the video of Jonathan Glazer denouncing the Israeli occupation of Gaza, where people are currently STARVING to death, to their RUclips channel.
Former winners doing the mini speeches to the nominees for acting categories should be something they start doing at the sag awards instead since it’s already sort of like actors gassing up other actors. It makes more sense for the Oscar’s to show clips from the films if the academy is so set on viewership and staying relevant. It was still very wholesome to watch though.
It really shouldn't bother you, however godzilla minus one should have been nominated for another 8 or 9 categories and objectively speaking win in 6 of these, including best picture. But this is Hollywood, the academy and these are their awards so we all know how they work lol.
I must say I'm really happy with the majority of the winners - Oppenheimer sweeping, Poor Things in the technical awards, Godzilla winning visual effects, Zone of Interest winning sound, Anatomy of a Fall for screenplay, Wes Anderson finally winning an Oscar, and Miyazaki becoming a two-time winner. Only real disappointment was Lily Gladstone losing, and by extension KOTFM going home empty-handed, but it was a really stacked category and Emma Stone was genuinely fantastic, so it wasn't a total WTF upset like say Jamie Lee Curtis taking supporting actress last year
It wasn't so bad, it was definitely good for the most part. But some movies were subbed in many categories where they should be nominated and win. Godzilla minus one is the best example of this, the movie should have been nominated for another 8 or 9 categories and objectively speaking win in 6 of these including best picture. But we all know how Hollywood, the academy and these awards tend to work, so yeah lol.
I'm not disappointed about how the awards went, but I will never stop saying that Past Lives was snubbed from a few nominations that it very rightly deserved in favor of some pretty mediocre performances. It should have gotten nominations for Leading Actress, Leading Actor, Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Director, and Score.
I agree with you completely my friend. Many movies got snubbed this year by the academy's favoritism towards Oppenheimer, or better said. Themselves lol. Oppenheimer is a very good movie and I'm happy for my boys Cillian and Nolan, but it should have won on many of the categories it was nominated. Godzilla minus one is the best example of what you are saying, along past lies. Godzilla should have been nominated for another 8 or 9 categories and objectively speaking win in 6 of these, including best picture for just how much it changes the modern perception of cinema in so many areas. But we all know how Hollywood, the academy and these awards tend to work on these days, they have too much ego to admit where others do better than them.

The academy has too much ego to recognize when the others are better lmao.
About as good of a night as I could reasonably hope for Poor Things. Would have been nice if it took Best Picture or Adapted Screenplay, but I knew those were unlikely. I feel like having actors win major awards is actually more important for a director’s career anyways; it ensures that great actors continue to want to work with them. I do wonder how The Academy will respond to Kinds of Kindness (Lanthimos’s next film, with much of the same cast). Lanthimos has been on a tear recently, so I expect it will deserve many of the same nominations, but would not be surprised if it misses some due to voter fatigue (unless Stone’s performance is undeniably GOAT tier, I know they won’t give her another Lead Actress win). But on the other hand, maybe he will start to develop the “due” narrative for Director or Picture?
6:02 Ryan nailed it for this appreciation for singing “I'm Just Ken” and he wears his classic Pink Panther tux and he sang amazingly. Ryan Gosling is the pretty boy man right here and can't wait to see him in “The Fall Guy” more than Reynolds did. Waiting for “Deadpool & Wolverine” or “IF”? …come on Ryan R.? Billie did win again for her song “What Was I Made For?” since winning her first time Oscar song, “No Time to Die.” The Fire Inside is not a bad song like you and Adam from YMS just had a bad taste of this fictional Flaming Hot Cheetos movie.
Boy and the heron getting the win over spider verse shook me to my core. Absolutely did not expect it to win but I’m all the more happier because of it.
Emma Stones performance was Oscar catnip. They love that shit. Not saying she's a bad actress but , Lilly did the harder performance though, to be quiet and stoic and strong and not fade into the background against great actors like DiCaprio and De Niro that's talent. RDJs often quoted bit in Tropic Thunder summed up the situation here. Over the top performances are easier to say hey look they're "acting". Than the quiet gentle ones and it's just sad.
20 days in Mariupol was totally deserved. So many people don't even know how hard it was to take the footage out of occupied Mariupol. The director and the operator, accompanied by a local policeman, all drove together in a car through 15 russian checkpoints (100 km of russian-occupied territory), while the cameras and hard drives with materials were hidden under the seats of the car - something for which they could all be killed if the russians found out. You can't even imagine what they felt.
The Boy and the Heron upset made my day! I mean, just look at Miyazaki's filmography and tell me how this guy only had one Oscar until yesterday? Japanese animation just kept getting snubbed (and well, the others who aren't Ghibli still getting this treatment) even though everyone knows Japan is the master of animation.

5:10 Oppenheimer gets crazy about getting 7 Academy Awards compared to last year, Everything, Everywhere All at Once getting 7. That's a record right there for these two amazing films in 2020. Yes, but 7? Zone of Interest gets 2 well done from International and Sound, I heard that Glazer tried to share about the Hamas attack and it's a bit forgiveness compared to his film so I can see how we can't bash human society during their cruel times for the Jews. Japan gets lucky from Godzilla Minus One for visuals and Boy and the Herron gets an animated feature. And that's a grand chicken teriyaki win right here.

But we all know how Hollywood, the academy and these awards tend to work, this movie along with the most recent dune part 2 are what the future of cinema should be or rather is if you know what you want to make.

John Mulaney was so fucking funny, and goddamn I did not like how Al Pacino announced the Best Picture, it sounds like he wandered out of the pub or a care home, negative suspence.
I think he was making fun of the old couple that got Moonlight wrong.
John Mulaney straight to The Zone Of Interest was quite the 180
@@kdpowersNah he’s just old and doesn’t give a shit anymore
@kdpowers nah he was the same at the game awards, hes just old
At that point I was tired and ready to go to sleep, plus they had been showing clips from the Best Picture nominees all night so it doesn’t bother me.
John Mulaney next year, I'm calling it, they gave him a test run at the governors awards
I f***ing hope so!
And Godzilla with the Godzilla figureeees
So good lmao
And their Godzilla shoes too
They were all hyped, legendary
As a German I absolutely hated the joke about Sandra Hüllers two roles. You could literally saw she smiled through the pain 🙃 We just don’t make jokes about genocide…
Yeah that was absolutely disgusting. I actually wonder how/if this was covered in non-German media o-o
John Mulaney would be a fantastic host and with him presenting in some award shows, I really think he would be a win since he never fails comedy.
Would've been ironic if Mulaney made fun of RDJ's substance abuse past as host.
im sure his ex wife definitely would love to see that too after all he did to her
Honestly after seeing John Mulaney presenting I kinda hope he replaces Jimmy as the host, I feel like he'd be perfect
I'm so delighted for Oppenheimer's success, it was basically the "Titantic" of 2023, and I'm proud of Nolan, Downey and Murphy.
But much better than Titanic
Barbie was better
@@kittenwizard4703 lol
Nothing close to Titanic, neither in quality nor popularity.
Barbie is much more like the Titanic of 2023. Culturally and financially.
Next year? We Dune this.
Oscar's are gon' be DUNE PILLED I tell ya!
I mean hopefully. The Oscars don’t really put movies with heavy action or ones that aren’t your typical Oscar bait movies in their top categories anymore.
If the academy treats Dune part 2 like godzilla minus one on this ceremony, then they are completely screwed in the next year.
Dune’s underrated tbh
@@katlyndobransky2419 I just finished watching Dune 2 a few hours ago in an Dolby Atmos theater; the theater was almost full and it's a BIG one. That may be a poor example to show that people are taking notice, but I've noticeably seen more coverage on Dune by memes/videos thanks to Dune 2-people are starting to pay attention to it and rightfully so
Also, I'd really love to see Denis Villeneuve finally take an Oscar 'cause he's my favourite director and I love all his films/works!

i am so sad that asteroid city didn’t get any nominations at all it felt like a snub since that movie is highly underrated and one of my favorite wes anderson movies but the wonderful story of henry sugar winning was great.
Dude I was a director I would straight up not go to the Oscar’s even if I was nominated just so I wouldn’t have to give a speech 😂

idk about the reaction to the Downey jokes, I thought it was fine and RDJ was pretty game for it. Mostly annoyed that the only joke about Flower Moon is "its too long!." Leave that lame shit to the Golden Globes man. Another year of the Oscars host being like "these movies suck, amirite." Yes, get Mulaney. He was awesome at the Governors Awards and clearly watches the movies
John Mullany needs to host, he's funnier than Jimmel. Feel like this year was a test run for next year.
It was an alright ceremony but Im glad they gave recognition to stunt people. I wish it got its own category but it was sweet seeing them at least give a hand to the people that make incredible physical feats for movies.
It would incentivize more and more risky stunts so it's probably in the performers best interest to not have that category

I feel like it was a very predictable Oscars night, but the category I was most excited about was Best Adapted Screenplay. Cord Jefferson’s speech was really inspiring to me as a Black female screenwriter. Hoping his success leads to some more doors opening for independent screenwriters and directors of all backgrounds.

I thought Gladstone was going to win, and I wanted her to. But I didn’t not want Stone to win if that makes sense? She was also fantastic. Hard choice and definitely a surprise. Here’s hoping both actors will have many more opportunities to get recognition for their wonderful work
My favorite hair highlight was that the dog from anatomy of a fall showed up to the awards
It's literally one of the biggest anime films of all time
Godzilla minus one should be nominated in more categories, but this is Hollywood and the academy so yeah lol.
The Oppenheimer movie winning 7 Oscars in one night was like when Beyoncé winning 6 Grammys in one night.
I’m happy it won best soundtrack 👏🏻 the others I don’t really care about
The only difference is Oppenheimer won the equivalent of album of the year

1:13 I'm proud to say that Miyazaki does deserve to get an award for his animated feature, Boy and the Herron. Thanks to the Ghibli fans really pushing it the best award-winning pick Spider-Verse didn't get much so it's the second award-winning since his first winning, Spirited Away.
The Zone of Interest won best sound and that’s all I care about! 🎉🍾🏆🍾🎊🎉🏆🍾
3:14 Poor Things finally gets three of them like Costume, Make-Up, and Production Design and it's a massive and beautiful art style of production and great old 19th century costumes and make-up!
It's very unique, like a psychedelic wrapped look of the Victorian Era.
Some of the comments were vile. She was great as Mary Lamb.
i actually worked on them this year and it was incredible to see everything come to fruition

Sleeping on Everything Everywhere.....
Zone of interests award speech was about stopping the genicide in Gaza. Pro Palestine speech silenced again.
I'm surprised your video didn't mention Godzilla Minus One taking home Best Visual Effects.
It really shouldn't bother you, however godzilla minus one should have been nominated for another 8 or 9 categories and objectively speaking win in 6 of these, including best picture.

Lol, supporting actor? Give me a break. You must have a real hard on for this movie for no reason.
@@eliasfigarzon9813 get over yourself. It would discredit the entire oscars if godzilla were to get nominated beyond technical. KOTFM not winning anything is akin to Banshees not winning anything last year. Great film that arguably should’ve had at least 1 win, but ultimately other competitors beat them (Kerry condon should’ve won best supp over JLC tho)
Honestly while I'm happy for my boys Cillian and Nolan we can't deny the bias and favoritism of Hollywood and the academy to Oppenheimer.
The movie is very good, but the others are just as good and better in some aspects, and they didn't get nominated or got subbed by Oppenheimer.

Godzilla Minus One winning just left me awestruck; congrats to Takashi Yamazaki and his team.
I thought the past winners talking about the nominees was quite sweet
Zone of Interest gets 2 well done from International and Sound, I heard that Glazer tried to share about the Hamas attack and it's a bit forgiveness compared to his film so I can see how we can't bash human society during their cruel times for the Jews.
Japan gets lucky from Godzilla Minus One for visuals and Boy and the Herron gets an animated feature. And that's a grand chicken teriyaki win right here.
