i’m very nervous with The Fantastic Mr Fox being in the thumbnail
I WAS SWEATING ICE, it made me open the video 😅
@@yesitsmep glad to know he still enjoys it, such a masterpiece of a movie
Same man. One of my all time favorites
such a beautiful movie. i love wes andersons style in live action, but it was MADE for the medium of stop motion.

Changing opinions is a sign of growth, not inconsistency
May I ask the difference?
What if you get seen as a hypocrite or something? What’s the defence. Im not saying this because I think he’s a hypocrite, is just people say that to me a lot when I change my mind… say when is is ok to even change your mind before it looks bad or selfish?
@alex.g7317 being a hypocrite would be changing what you say just for the sake of saying it. Changing opinions and having a reason shows that your taste and values have changed, which is totally ok
Inconsistency is a sign of growth, in that case. To change states is to adapt or become something new
Change is not always growth sometimes it can negative
im confused why both you and karsten are fighting the air on this. the idea that changing opinions makes you a hypocrite is an unpopular opinion (especially amongst the type of people that watch these videos) and is viewed as a dumb thing to think.
most people agree that its a sign of growth, and nobody who watches his videos is saying otherwise? just feels like arguing with a strawman.
If he says that Fantastic Mr Fox is not the best movie ever made, i will spontaneously combust
Meh.
Meh.

BURN
Thank goodness he didn't (it's a 10/10)
notice he never mentioned Robots.
Top 2 movie of all time and it’s not 2 🥱
Wish more critics did this
it's such a good thing that he acknowledges change and actually embraces it, learns from it, and shares it with us too. it's an indirect cinema and art appreciation overall awareness video!
Ebert did
this is why RUclips reviews are great and review journalism is bad. Seeing the character behind the review is not only much more entertaining but also, you can understand 10000x more why they enjoy certain things due to the ability to see what they are like as a character and other films they enjoy. When I see a RUclipsr criticising something I like constructively I have a much higher chance of sticking around contently.
Chris Stuckmann did a video like this (he talked about Spider-Man 3, The Phantom Menace and Equilibrium)
@@jamosbigjaw1791 I think it's the other way around to me, I love RUclips film channels, but I don't have much problems seeing professional journalist critics having hot takes on something, as long as they can support their arguments, wether a random youtuber can be wrong about something and made me outraged. But sure, RUclips essays and reviews are probably now the new film/art criticisim.
I remember watching "Boyhood (2014)" when it came out in a theater. I was 19 years old and after watching it I thought it was disappointing because nothing really happened. Rewatching it later after 10 years, not only I liked it so much more but I managed to connect so much with all of the characters at those different times of their lives. I feel like the older I get, the more I'd get out of watching it.
I’ve always been nervous to watch it just because there isn’t much of a plot for 3hours.
Linklater subverts the traditional narrative arc in a number of his movies, including the Before trilogy and Everybody Wants Some. It can be both a little disappointing for the uninitiated (bc you're primed to expect that usual rising action, climax, falling action, etc from having seen it in almost every other movie/novel before) and refreshing for a change from the norm.
DID YOU KNOW IT TOOK 12 YEARS TO MAKE?? TWELVE YEARS!!!!
@@pp1942RLM has permanently poisoned all discourse surrounding this movie lol
@@nowayjose596 especially with movie like Boyhood where i was expecting some incredibly traumatic story arc for the child like abuse or death. I see this in so many dramas so i kept waiting for it to happen. But its just a normal slice of life childhood experience with relatable ups and downs that are charming as all hell.
Quite disappointed that your opinion on Cars 2 still hasn't changed! Maybe one day you'll realise what a life-changing film it is!
When I was a kid, going to the theatre was always a magical experience. The first time I watched Cars 2 was the first time it wasn't.
I use to like it when I was a kid, but that was because I was a huge fan of Cars (still love the first film, I see it now as a movie that homages the american dream), when I learned that Finn McMissile was based on an Aston Martin DB5, that made me discover James Bond, so yeah, Cars 2 made me into a 007 and spy/action movie fan.
Nah you're absolutely right about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
“When Harry Met Sally” My favorite movie of all time. I watched that movie at least six times. It’s a comfort movie for me.
Me too, one of my "fresh romcoms" and a classic, I love to see Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal back in their day.
I also love when Harry met Lloyd
I’m definitely glad you changed your opinion on Goodfellas. I would go so far to say it’s my favourite movie of all time. Never has a movie been so entertaining, influential, funny, visceral and depicted such believably raw characters. I always get something new from rewatching this movie, and am glad you got something new rewatching it too.
Same, my favourite film of all time easily
Yup, it’s one which will stay in my top 10 for ever
Eh it was really good but like idk the ending left me so conflicted but that's like most of the Scorsese movies, so like idk if Scorsese didn't do the ending I would have loved it more
Totally agree, however I had the same when watching it for the first time. I just couldn’t get into it but I rewatched it twice in the past 2 years and now it’s definitely up there with my favourites oat
Sameeee
Okay ive never even seen ur channel before but man i love this idea, more youtube video essayists should do this. Just having fun with your own past self, rethinking your opinions, joking around, being light about past ‘mistakes’ or whatever you’ve changed ur mind on. Its a great perspective and approach to take and I highly respect it
If this is your first video, oh man do you have a treasure trove to go through
Hell yeah, I’ve always said Once is one of the most rewatchable films and is my favorite Tarantino just for how good a time it is.
ever since i first saw it, it’s been a personal favorite, i absolutely love it
i'm a huge fan of qt and it's possibly my least favorite of his apart from jackie brown. maybe i just wasn't in the right mood for it, but i was expecting so much more from it. felt like it took ages for anything of significance to happen. need to give it another shot at some point though
@@nohollaI love it but I thought Once was just ok, kinda boring. My most rewatched is Django, then maybe Kill Bill.
i used to think it was boring, now it's on my favorites
@@nohollaI felt the same. Especially after seeing Babylon, I don’t see the championing of old Hollywood like I do in Chazelle’s work. But idk I have to rewatch eventually
This is a super authentic and refreshing video to see. More critics and even people in general should do this.
Captain Marvel was the 2nd marvel movie i watched and ive only watched 3.. I watched a few months after it came out and unfortunately hearing everyone else hated it made me not enjoy it as much but last week I rewatched it and I genuinely loved it. For once bad memory aided me cause i didnt remember much of it, i loved Carol and her flashbacks of having a fun life, the betrayal, Talos and his wife + kid made me actually cry a little.
It's always good to rewatch movies even if you do remember it- you might see things you didn't see before
You might change your opinion again if you've seen all the MCU movies.
I've seen all of it. Captain Marvel is right at the very bottom.
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom That's fair. I've watched First Avenger & Into the spiderverse which is my absolute favorite, Marvel then it's first avenger. I'm excited to watch all the movies then rewatch them again looking for eater eggs lol

Great video Karsten. Before I used to think Spiderman 3 was disappointing but as I get older, even though it has some flaws, it gives a lot of nostalgia and a lot better than most comic book films today. Also I agree Goodfellas is a Scorsese masterpiece
Spiderman 3 is only technically bad, but it is wildly entertaining from beginning to end. Whereas today's bad super hero movies are technically okay on paper, but are dreadfully boring.

coming up on my fourth year of enjoying film as a hobby i’m always thinking about what dumb opinions i had at the beginning, how much stuff i need to rewatch to see how my opinion has changed, and how much stuff i’ll be wrong about today. thanks for making this video, it’s a good reminder to us all
I’m very interested in seeing a sequel to this a few years down the line to see what other movies you’ve changed your view on
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite Tarantino as well. The pacing, performances, production design, and direction are so easy to just get lost in.
It’s easily the most magic Tarantino has sewn into a film and in my mind it’s the only one he made with a conscious effort to make it Ernest and playful in a non cynical way. It’s like how we view the 60’s. An innocent and youthful time.
I’m so glad about the opinion on Goodfellas changing. It’s not only Scorsese greatest achievement, but in my personal opinion, the greatest film of all time

@@andrewstephens5885in my opinion it perfectly encapsulates the rise and fall of the gangster film.
Also being entertaining as fuck.
@@Comporio i could never get into it. i thought most of its praise was for its authenticity to culture. overall gangster movies are just boring to me. maybe my opinion will change like in this video.
@@LeapingRat maybe, i used to hate animation years ago. Now it is one of my favourite mediums.
@@LeapingRat tbf, Mafia films are my favourite films so I definitely am biased. Personally I think what’s so good about Goodfellas is that even if you don’t enjoy films about the Mafia, it’s still an extremely entertaining film
Changing opinions is a part of being human, we grow and go through life, and what someone thought 10 years ago is probably completely different from what that person thinks now.
The way you describe our views on art changes as we change in age rings so true when I rewatched Apocalypse Now (which I’ve rewatched 6 times this year alone). I was a big war film fan and Platoon done a great job of introducing me to the Vietnam War with a very human feel. However, I was 14 then and very new to experiencing war films and particularly Vietnam, so Apocalypse Now threw me off with it’s pace and very different plot. Now looking back it’s one of my favourite films (even above Platoon which is one of my favourite films), probably due to how how high quality the production is and how I’ve changed in nearly a decade.
Love that you took the time to be open about how opinions change over time. I wholeheartedly agree with this idea, and agree that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has aged the exact same way for me.
I love the introspection. You are still young and your opinions will change and that's wonderful. Keep being this self-critical and unrigid and you'll continue to have all the success in the world. Great video. Thanks!
BLADE RUNNER 2049 IS THE BEST FILM OF 2017 DAMMIT
Better than Coco or First Reformed?
@@raszze in my opinion, yes
I really appreaciate your channel. I watch a lot of movie channels and essays, but I think you are one of the greatest. I disagree with a lot of your opinions on movies but that doesent matter because what makes your videos so special is that you really respect the art and emotions of filmmakers and I think its sad that there are not that much reviewers who are really talking about the emotional impact that movies can give you.. keep it up :)
So glad you're willing to update your opinions regularly. You're so right that our perspectives change. I think they change every five years at least, sometimes evern faster. As for farourite movies, I recommend you allow your list of all-time faves to be equal to your age. In other words, when you're twenty your list of favourites can be twenty titles long. Each year you get to add one new favourite, but it can be from any year.
I have to say as someone who’s been watching you for several years now that you’ve grown SO much! First video I saw of yours was the Scorsese one which was honestly pretty horrifying but I’m so glad that you’ve come around on Goodfellas 😂. Only thing I’ll add is Raging Bull was far too low as well. That being said After Hours is indeed a masterpiece
So glad you retracted your opinion about Goodfellas. I think I had a heart attack the first time I saw that ranking video.
What I thought was crazy is that raging bull wasn’t ranked higher than 10.
I feel the same way with music. There are a lot of times where I do not like certain songs, but then they grow on me, and I love them.
Thank you for adding The Meyerowitz Stories to the 2017 list, such an underrated gem ❤
Oh boi...'Get Out' above Phantom Thread is the hottest take of the entire video and he just casually dumped it and refused to elaborate lol
:)
Both are equal I think. Get out marries arthouse and blockbuster in an organic way that reminds one of the greats like pulp fiction or fight club. Phantom thread is meditation. It’s lived with me like no other movie before. PTA and DDL are just untouchable at their game here.
Thank you for acknowledging First Reformed. My favorite movie of the decade and rarely anybody seems to talk about it
I know that feeling about your favourite thing changing. I’m pretty static on films but my favourite song really does change depending on the day and what I’ve been listening to lately.
We all change. Great to see some new takes on movies you´ve already talked about. More people should do this!
I’m not exactly sure your age, but I’m 24. And I saw OUATIH at like - 22 - and i can confidently say it pushed me back into loving movies like I did as a kid. I still don’t think it’s his “best” like you said; but I do think it is constantly grappling with Django and Inglorious as my favorite of his movies.
there is no way on earth that you can convince me that Karsten doesn't just fade the credit song at the the end of his videos just like the begining of succession episodes
that our opinions and beliefs can change is such a superpower. we take it for granted. as our environments and times change, so can our minds.
I'm glad you went back on your Goodfellas ranking as that was totally ridiculous. I also share your opinion of OUATIH. I didn't know whether to love it or hate it at first but after a rewatch I think it's a future classic.
Kudos bruh😎I def appreciate ANY1 who admits our 1st impressions rarely R well thought out. Everything I loved is cuz I spent time w/ it till grows on ya
Lady bird is a movie i didn’t like that much when i first saw it in my teen years. i felt distant from it and thought it was unemotional and dull. then i watched it a few years later and i was floored. amazing movie.
Agree on Another Round. It most often pops up in my mind when having to recommend a "recent" film to watch.
The ending of another round literally had me dancing. I don't know what it is about that scene - it's so simple yet so satisfying.
Your 2017 take is much more aligned with mine. I still prefer TED to ED2 by a slim margin, but I know I'm wrong there.
thanks for the “once upon a time in hollywood” love. it’s my favorite of his too.
I love this video. I used to call my favorite movie FMF, but I already watched it too many times and seen a lot of great movies that one day I rewatched it and got really frustrated watching it like I didn't need to see it again and that's when I realized that Gummo became my favorite movie
For whatever it's worth, your channel is the one that consistently gets me out of my comfort zone and actually makes me want me to watch films and directors that I never really cared to consider or even ever heard of. So, thank you.
Love this video, it’s always interesting seeing how people can evolve and how they enjoy movies, also love Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, I feel comfortable saying it is his best film.
Goodfellas from #13 to #1 is like watching a film snob come back to earth
It's the natural course for any film snob. They want to be different at first so reject the great but very popular films (i.e., Goodfellas, anything by QT) and then after a while learn to appreciate them for how great they are. Haha.
I've noticed you literally reviewed every movie I either watched or on my watchlist in letterboxd back in 2019 and so I've really just been following your critic there. I also thought you were a girl this entire time.
I only managed to wondered into your channel now literally because I was changing my opinions in my own reviews. Growth and change in opinion as a creative should always be encouraged so thanks !
So happy about your opinion on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. One of my favourite movies of all time

Lol, love that you talked about the "Animated fur" video
This video reminds me of an interview with Spielberg when he said if he made close encounters today he would alter the ending so Richard Dreyfuss wouldn’t leave his children because his perspective had changed after having a family of his own

god, you're so honest. thank you so so much
Great video and thanks for the artistic self reflection. Appreciate the effort and the creation of content.
Totally agree with the aspect of changing your opinions on films. I recently started to watch more films, and realized how the films I called my favourite are now average and bland due to how 'trope-y' they are, or how their stories aren't anything extraordinary/not done before.
My heart is so happy that you changed your opinion on goodfellas
finally someone else who loves One Upon a Time in Hollywood!
Its a strange sentence to say, but you and Roger Ebert are my two favourite critics! You both have a lot in common, especially in this particular subject, and its cool to see you mirror him at times... Love you both, thanks for opening my eyes to so much film!
dude no way! Fantastic Mr. Fox is easily one of my top favorites as well, and its usually what I tell people my favorite movie is :)
There are several movies I plan on rewatching because I never got into them and I need to give them a fair shot. Those are The Departed, Se7en, Heat, Apocalypse Now, and Inside Llewyn Davis.
if you rewatch apocalypse now id reccomend the theatrical cut. imo greatest film of all time
Heat is brilliant imo
@@maxotto9877the problem with apocalypse now for me is the last 1 hour or so. It was just weird. The first half of the movie was good, but the rest was weird.
@@TNT-dn9es the last hour changes depending on what version you are talking about, but the whole section at kurtz compound is filmic perfection imo
it's supposed to get weird, each stop along the river gets more and more insane, dark and depraved as it goes along, detached further and further from the order and comfort of civilised society, he travels up the artery into the heart of darkness to be confronted by his own shadow, and in Kurtz he finds exactly that. The shell of a man he would become if he were to surrender to his own darkness.
It is masterful storytelling that works both on such a psychologically rich level.
It's not just a war film that works on the surface level. The book it was adapted from had nothing to do with the vietnam war, because that's not really what it's about, ford coppola uses vietnam and his experiences in the war to examine the same dark psychological truths about himself that joseph conrad did in the original book.

Once upon a time in Hollywood is also my favorite Tarentino movie
Love the attention for Another Round, such a good movie
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks that about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, wouldn't say it's my favourite of his but man the way Tarantino portrays Hollywood, not only romanticising it but very much criticising it as well makes it one of his most powerful films in my opinion and never lets down throughout its hefty run time
6:37 God I love Quentin Tarantino
Synecdoche is the best movie! And the second best work from Kaufman, his book Antkind is a MASTERPIECE ❤️🍀
Happened to me when I saw There Will Be Blood for the first time in cinema I was 18 at the time. Didn't understand the fuzz about it, now after 15 years re watching it multiple times I can honestly say it's a masterpiece not only it's my favorite PTA film but one of my all time favorites. growth and aging most definitely change your prospective on a movie. anyone says otherwise is an idiot
It's also one of my all time favorites, made me discover PTA, I realized that DDL is one of my favorite actors and of the GOAT's, I'm planning on revisiting Lincoln, I remember when my Mom bought it on dvd after it came out, hearing it earned Oscars and stuff, honestly I found it a bit boring at first, it's been a long time since I watched it, now that I'm grown up and my tastes became more sophisticated, I probably would like it this time, at least for DDL's performance as Abraham Lincoln.

i agree with once upon a time in hollywood. it’s my by far favorite QT movie. i hated it back in 2019 tbh, but upon multiple rewatches in the past months ive been loving it. didn’t help i was like 12-13 when it came out.
"I think what makes cinema to me, I think ultimately, it's something that for some reason stays with you so that a few years later you can watch it again or 10 years later you can watch it again and it's different. In other words there's more to learn about yourself, or about life. That's interesting. At first you may find that "I'm affected by this film, the camerawork is amazing the actors are terrific, great editing and that sort of thing," but after a certain amount of time, after you get enough of that... you can watch it repeatedly, and you can watch it different times in your life, and the film's the same, you changed." -Martin Scorsese
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was my first Tarantino movie and I saw it twice in theaters, and now that I've watched all his other movies, it might still be my favorite. Tho I do think they're all great in their own way and Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill Vol. 1 were some of my other favorites
This is such a refreshing video to see on the film RUclips scene, definitely think more people should be doing this. Surprisingly a lot of the stuff I agree with:
- I also recently rewatched The Hangover at a sleepover and honestly pretty much hated it due to it's lazy and outdated humor and very lame and tame execution of it's, on paper, wild premise. At least it offered one hell of a throwback soundtrack if nothing else
- OUATIH was a film I loved and defended since first seeing it in 2019, but I definitely think it might have reached a Top 5 Tarantino status in my book as I think and quote it quite often
- I definitely agree on general favorites being harder to narrow down to only a few or just 1 the more I expand my knowledge about film and what situation in life I'm currently in. My top 4 usually circles around monthly obsessions, recently they have been:
- Three Colors Red
- Still Walking
- Good Will Hunting
- Perfect Blue
- Podzemlje (Underground)
- Puss In Boots The Last Wish
- Before Sunrise/Sunset
- EEAAO
- Princess Mononoke
- Pulp Fiction
- Across/Into the Spiderverse
- Lawrence of Arabia
- C'mon C'mon
- Oldboy

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is Tarantino's most Tarantino movie
I absolutely love that Smiley Face is among your all-time favorites.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood gets better every time you watch it.
I think the Once Upon In Time in Hollywood reaction is quite common, I remember first seeing it on release and thinking it was good but not one of Tarantino's best as it wasn't what I expected and now I think its his best movie and a masterpiece and still consistently lives in my head
