  • Sidney Crosby sits down with James Duthie to reflect on the Golden Goal at the Vancouver Olympics and why it was a dream come true. He's also hopeful NHL players will be back there in 2022. The Penguins captain also touches on the Maple Leafs and the next level of skill in the league right now.

To be fair, his last game was against the Leafs, and he was in Toronto to play them again when this interview was filmed. Asking a question about the league-leading goal scorer who scored in the first of the two games is pretty reasonable.

I have actually a brutal memory of the golden goal. I had a hockey game that night, I was in my first year of Peewee, my Dad was assistant coach of that team and we were both delaying leaving as much as possible to watch the game, but had to go, while we were going to the rink (which was 5 minutes away), Crosby scored and we got to hear all about it from the worst hockey coach I ever had growing up, classic brutal coach who treated tier 3 peewee like it was the NHL, so that sucks to have to remember it that way. I almost couldn't believe it when I was told, I thought, "No way, sid scoring the game winner?! That's too good to be true!", but I'm so glad that's how it happened at the end of the day!

As someone whoose best hockey skill is intuitive hockey sense, like Sid, the best way to explain it is that time feels like it slows down when you make a decision in the offensive zone. It's not a feeling of "4-5 moves ahead", it's a feeling like "bullet time" from the Matrix movies where you know a split second where the puck should go before anyone else does. But the chess analogy doesn't sum it up.

We were so close but at least we got the greatest goalie in that draft class in Pricer and we had Minnesota's first round pick from that year, Benoit Pouliot come play for year on our team back in 2010-11 and it's honestly one of my favorite Habs rosters of all time.

NHL wants to grow the game overseas...would rather have random teams play 1 or 2 games in Europe and Asia...instead of sending the world's best players to play in a tournament every 4 years. Nice.

Fifty Fives he's always injured, as someone that played semi pro hockey I appreciate that guy that doesn't get injured more. Even Gretzky acknowledged that Ovi is probably going to beat his goal records and at the end of the day, that's what everyone will remember because it will be set in stone. Even all the announcers are saying he's the greatest goal scorer of all time considering how hard it is to score now compared to back in Gretzkys day so like I said this popping up on my feed isn't interesting to me.
