Jimmy Page was a mad genius. He and John Bonham seemed to have their brains connected when they played. They are the only band I know of where the drummer follows the guitar player. Somehow he knows what Jimmy is going to do.
So my older cousin and a couple of his friends took the train down from Yonkers to the MSG box office to get tickets for the concert. No ATMs in those days. So they thought they had enough cash, but guy at box office says they need to pay for a surcharge. Guy says no dice ,your out of luck. They plead with him to hold the tickets for an hour and he does. One guy flies home to Yonkers, gets the money on time and they are at this show! True story. As an aside, the biggest concert that same weekend was not this, but Summer Jam at Watkins Glen New York(The Band,Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band). 600,000 people showed up setting an attendance record for the US. My cousin Bob was asked to go to that and he said, not a chance,i'm going to Led Zeppelin!

Page's playing from 4:35 - 6:13 is some of the best soloing you will ever see. He never played this song twice the same way. This is made up on the spot. Just unreal how amazing he is.

Nightly. Only band that did this everytime they played, specifically this #. Yeah, check out 4/27/69 Fresh Garbage Medley & 9/29/71 Whole Lotta Love Medley, great!
Pure Blues call- and- response. Pure Rock- grungy guitar scream, choogling bass, near- Jazz drumming, and soaring, searing vocals. Pure genius from Jimmy and Robert- matched by the unmatchably stolid solidity of Jonesy and Bonzo on the battery. A fave for 50 years now! Nicely done, Pope- Peace.
The thing I love about Jimmy Page's performance here is the composition. The arrangement of different sounds and playing styles during this song is so awesome. The bow is obviously awesome but there are so many liitle things he does, like the sequence of octaves just before he pulls out the bow, the sequence prior to that where he has his foot on the wha wha pedal while he he strumming the guitar at the same rate while changing up the sounds by changing the frequence of his finger taps - its just beautiful sounding. The sequence of Going to San Francisco is sweet. So many things and JPJ and JHB keeping the groove going the whole time. Just inspirational...
Jimmy Page was asked what his opinion of this performance was...He replied "Not magic but not tragic ".....Hard to believe. I think this guitar solo here is the greatest rock guitar performance ever captured.
