I still say it, but I asked my 20-something niece if they still call people in Edina “cake-eaters” like we did growing up. She said, “Yep! Still use that” Plymouth’s best feature, by far, is the lightning-quick access to the entire west metro because of 169 and 494.
I live in the "Bermuda triangle" of Dakota County. Basically it's a Rosemount address, Lakeville city limits, but we do most of our business in Apple Valley. I think both Apple Valley and Rosemount are great. They are the same school district as Eagan. I also want to point out that Eagan is the home of the Vikings new TCO performance center. I would say Rosemount is more affordable than Lakeville. Apple Valley is in the middle and has a lot of new construction, both businesses and homes, as well as some older parts. This is the school district we want to keep our kids in.
Shakopee is nowhere near the Mississippi River. It is one of the South Of The River suburbs meaning south of the Minnesota River. When you drive south across the river, your property taxes drop by 10% to 20%. While it has an old downtown, the bulk of the city is newly built since the Bloomington Ferry Bridge was completed giving the city quick and easy access to Minneapolis.
Shakopee has a little of everything. Has a downtown, has suburban feel, has undeveloped land as well and large lots. Mystic lake & Canterbury are more than just casinos too they’re entertainment districts. Pretty underrated suburb imo
Hopkins is a decent choice and is well connected to trails, bus/rail transit and actually has a real Main Street. Located on the borders of Minnetonka, St. Louis Park and Edina it is well located and you can get around on foot, bike or car. Several neighborhood parks are great for kids to get to without crossing traffic, access to Minnehaha creek and lots of green space as well. Schools are decent and shopping goes from mom&pop boutiques along Main Street to traditional mall area on East side. Housing goes from entry level studio apartments all the way up to mini-mansions with golf course sized yards and you have traditional neighborhoods that won’t trap you in like HOA development’s although they exist as well if that’s your thing. For those not in the golf course sized yards, there is a golf course on the SouthEast side of the city. Overall, Hopkins is a good city to live in with things for kids, teens and adults to do and centrally located.
Yea, I get your reaction about Plymouth because there's not a lot to do, but it's still a great place to live and raise a family. Here's the thing, there aren't a lot of restaurants and fun activities in Plymouth, but the neighborhoods and schools are top notch. It's a great place to raise a family. I grew up there and went to the Wayzata school district, which is one of the best school districts in the state. Also, if you want to go shopping and to restaurants, then all you have to do is drive 10-15 minutes to Maple Grove, Minneapolis or downtown Wayzata. Now, if a person does move to Plymouth, I highly recommend to be in the Wayzata school district part of Plymouth. The eastern part of Plymouth would be the Robbinsdale school district, which is not nearly as good as Wayzata. I now live in Maple Grove, which is also a great city. There is a lot more shopping in Maple Grove compared to Plymouth, but with that also comes a lot more traffic, so keep that in mind. The traffic on some of the main roads in Maple Grove can be horrible at times because of all the shopping areas. Plymouth is more just residential living and not a lot of shopping, but it also has a lot less congestion and traffic as well. Pros and cons.
Much of Edina is built on swampy wetlands. Go west of France Avenue, and it's landfill where horses used to get sucked into the wetlands and couldn't get out. A 10,000 bison was found when a parking lot was being expanded having been sucked into the muddy land base.
Lived in Los Angeles for awhile but love living in the Twin Cities. Think biking through the parks system on the Grand Rounds is my favorite outdoor activity here.
Maple Grove used to be a really nice suburb. I lived there for 27 years. However, it is now being overrun with people fleeing from Minneapolis. And with those former Minneapolis residents have come the crime, drugs, and welfare recipients. We moved out four years ago due to the negative changes.
This is misleading: just because one lives in Minnetonka or Edina, you won’t be in that city’s name school district. That school districts don’t follow city limits.
A lot of Woodbury is in the Stillwater School District. That may be important to point out. Also, thanks for not adding Stillwater to this list. It's too far away. Come to visit please, but don't move here...🎉
Grew up in Plymouth. Agreed with the synopsis, nothing to do except bike endlessly on the suburban winding roads. Plymouth peaked in the 90s when I was there and it was an ideal place to raise kids. Most neighborhoods were great for Halloween. My parents let me roam for hours because the neighborhood streets were so safe and quiet and still are. I drive through it every once and a while still as my commute goes through. It's far too old of a suburb, demographically, now though. Maybe in 10 years when the Boomers who became Plymouth lifers finally downsize and retire in Florida/Arizona there will be nice turnover that will reignite the spirit in Plymouth.
All southern suburbs with cookie cutter McMansions and townhouses, many a lot further from town than advertised. Totally skipped great northern areas closer to both downtowns in great school districts such as Mounds View, Arden Hills, Shoreview, WBL and Mahtomedi. So much for ChatGPT.

You really can't go wrong with the line of suburbs in the west of the cities. Start with Rogers/Maple Grove at the top and go down to the Eden Prairie/Chanhassan area. It's probably the best section of suburbs in the state. OK, throw in Edina if you want that south Minneapolis vibe, but the traffic near Edina is also horrible, especially that stretch of 494 from Eden Prairie to the Mall of America. The traffic alone near Edina is enough to want me to not live there.

The same thing happens in the NW metro. Cross the Mississippi from Hennepin to Anoka county and your taxes drop dramatically.
