- Baltany Watches have really impressed me over the last year, releasing a plethora of high quality / high value watches. Today I review the Baltany Discoverer or Baltany Explorer Tribute if you like.
There are other brands producing Explorer homages so will Baltany be able to hold their own in this very competitive Explorer Style watch market?

Looks great in that colour price is on the top end but I’m going to keep my eye on this one I would wear on a shark mesh or a single pass nato dimensions look good as well.Great review John 👍

The brushing looks a bit off where the lugs are... Would've been better with an all brushed bracelet... dial is very good, crystal is great, and rest of the design is very good.
I wouldn't buy with that polished centre link bracelet. All brushed, and I would definitely consider.

I agree, if they ditched the polished centre-links, would be excellent...
I knew this would be a bone of contention...hopefully Baltany read / watch the reviews and take action.

Good eye, but at this price just buy a great light or dark brown good leather or sued strap

Nice job on the review and the weather cooperated so you could really exhibit that sunburst dial! That color rocks. The matte black is going to be more popular probably, but that colorway is just class.

Yeah I have a soft spot for them but have to be objective. Personally I like this watch a lot and really love the dial. I just know ...and the comments seem back me up, that the polished centre links will be a problem for most :)
I like it but that polished centre on bracelet and the clasp kills it, I have just taken delivery of the san martin 2023 ranger homage with coffee dial and it is stunning, far better for not much more money, only thing it’s missing is the nh38 but I can happily live with a ghost position.
I had the SM ranger in for review...again that is a polarising watch with the spade shaped hour hand :)
Great review as always, John. Baltany finally threw their hat into the ring. We’re now spoilt for choice with Explorer homages, can’t complain!
It's a gorgeous dial. Truly stunning.
A fully brushed bracelet with matched brushing on the top of the lugs would make a better overall look, but I have to agree dial finishing on this watch is the star feature.

Good review John. Bummer on the brushing direction in the lugs. I don’t know why companies do that. That clasp is a bit of a mystery. The inside looks nice, milled with the chamfered edge but so odd that it doesn’t close just by pushing it. The dial looks great. Beautiful color.
Hi Eric. There are definitely a lot of positives with this watch...the dial and crystal are exceptional. The clasp is solid and perhaps is supposed to be like that but I will investigate that with Baltany. Shame about the direction of the brushing on the lugs. Not poorly executed but a wrong choice. Still a great watch :)
The crystals Baltany use are among the best you can possibly get for this price. There is no milkiness around the edges, it even puts acrylic crystals to shame. But I can't get over the polished center links. I just don't like them and it kills this watch for me, how beautiful the watchhead may be! 😏
I appreciate your honest review. Beautiful dial and crystal. Maybe a version two will be produced with the improvements that you mention. If so, that will make an awesome watch.
I do like it but I was right unfortunately. If you read the comments a lot of people don't like the centre links nor the circular brushing. Strange choice from Baltany which is a shame .

I just got mine, no polished middle link now and the crown and clasp mow have logos. Bracelet feels quite light, would rather a bit more weight in it myself

I guess they were going for matching the bezel with the centre links on the bracelet. I'm very tempted with this one due to the gorgeous dial and crystal though.
Hi Rich it is a beautiful watch. To be honest it has to be up there as being one of the most beautiful dials I have ever seen. Reminds me of an Orient open heart in brown sunburst I had a few years back. I would wear it on a nice leather. Never thought I wouldn't love a Baltany but liking it a lot is still good!

I really like this watch and can't wait to get one, although I'll happily pay the extra to get the Sellita movement. I like the polished links on the bracelet. I think a homage should take inspiration from the original watch, not copy it exactly so this makes it stand out a bit which is a good thing in my book. Have to agree on the lack of signed crown and clasp though. Baltany are a serious player in their field now and are just missing those small touches that would put them at the top of the pile.
Hi Giles and thanks for the comment. They really are doing good things. I have handled a few of their watches and rate them very highly. I really like this one, especially the dial and crystal...top notch. Just a couple of minor changes would make this watch the one to beat in this niche :)
The brushing on the bracelet is totally different to that of the case. That's a deal breaker at any price.

Nice review, I'm after the new Discoverer that uses the same case. With the circular brushing on the case, Alpha do exactly the same thing and have done for years. Not really to my taste either but willing to overlook as all other specs are fantastic. I wonder if they come out of the same factory, seems like it's a conscious decision though rather than poor manufacturing.
I have the Alpha Chrono and the Baltany case is leagues better :)
@johnswatchjoint ah yes, probably is. Specifically their Explorer and DJ has that rough circular brushing.

Thanks for the review. I have been anxious about ordering an Explorer, lots of budget Chinese varieties. Under 250 dollars of those that you have bought, what would you buy yourself, with your experience now?
Hi Weiss. Really if you stick to the bigger, well known Chinese brands you are spoilt for choice. My personal favourite is actually not an automatic. I did a review of the Addiesdive with the Seiko VH31 movement and it's great...and also cheap. The perfect beater. Others such as San Martin and this one are very good. Cronos are good but more expensive. Just search for explorer on AliExpress and you will find lots of choice. I liked the Proxima Ranger also.
It's almost perfect, except for all the polished areas... That's a deal-breaker for me.
Its good but not perfect. I just do not understand why it takes many versions of each new watch for the Chinese to build a decent homage watch. The coin saved is still the main attraction for us collectors. I have so many homages in my collection and its love/hate on all of them. Well if they swap the bracelet out to a brushed with a decent clasp this one would be better than average. One day they will get the price, design and quality aspects in balance until then you reviewers have much to talk about. Great review, love the cupboard of doom or loom.

For me and how I wear my watches this doesn't fit into my lifestyle. Way to much polish and for an explorer type watch the sun burst dial is pointless. Only three micro adjustments is just aweful. I do like the watch visually but practically it doesn't work for me.
