Adding this system to an existing pond is a brilliant idea. I am glad we have you expanding this concept beyond the patio. Not every pond shop will stock these tanks. You may need to special order them.

I think the idea of Eric's videos is to show all aspects of the pond build. Plumbing is a large part of it, and not everyone knows how to do it... or in your case, even how to SPELL it. I watch his videos with great interest, because I plan to build something like this soon. I am glad there is an expert out there to explain this stuff at its lowest level. Remember, no matter how much you know about something, there is ALWAYS room to LEARN more.

Thanks for the thorough explanation! I do have one question regarding the manifold, should the cuts/outlets facing up towards the gravel bed, or facing down? Is there a big difference considering clogged pipes?

I would like more details on the down spouts. I think you said 1 1/2" bulkheads, but in vid 8, it looked like you downsized with adapters on the downspout side (outside top tank), but looking from this angle it looks like you downsized from the top tank inside. probably doesn't really matter, I'm just trying to figure out my materials list. Looks like: Left: 1 1/2" 90, 1 1/2" to 3/4" bushing, to 3/4" adapter; Middle: 1/2 adapter (i guess they make a 1 1/2" bulkhead with a 1/2" thread?) connected to a manual valve, 1/2" adapter; Right: looks like 1 1/2" adapter. %/ ...and what size were those holes? oy!

I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem if it was a 9 part series on hydroponic filtration system. "You could grow your weed in there" ala Adam Sandler on SNL.

I copied your idea in Pakistan and it worked perfect. I personally made a mistake that effected my Bog filter after three years, i planted elephant grass/ grass around natural ponds that filtered very well in beginning but its roots jammed my filtration pipes resulting into loss of three pumps in last 2 months

So this will work great as a bio filtration but what about mechanical filtration? Wont this clog at the bottom pipes eventually?

This is such a great step by step video! THANK YOU! Questions: 1) is there a specific ratio regarding size between the feed tube at the top of the bog and the intake tube assembly at the bottom of the bog? 2) the spill spout in the center, is there a specific distance in relation to the intake tube that is needs to be? 3) What is the actual name of the part that is black and that you use on either side of the "tub" to pass the plumbing through without leaks? 4) my pond and bog are going to be much smaller than yours. Can I go to a smaller PVC size for the bog feed and intake? I am in the middle of designing my bog pond and I am still confused on these points.I really appreciate your answers.

      1. the flow rate was 600 mph in and the gravity flow in a 2" pipe can handle 900 mph.
      2. not sure I understand what you want to know here but you want approximately 8" of water in the bog
      3. Bulkhead Fitting
      4. don't use smaller than 1.5" pVC

Ha, I found a dealer, a small exotic pet store(go figure), that was kind enough to order one for me. Thanks to you, I have all the pipe measurements, so I better get started. Looking foreword to the next video. Is there any wiggle room with pump gph size?

im interested with that emergency flow pipe usage, the only trouble of this kind of filter is clogging, how long this set up works ? i mean duration until this clogged

Copper can effect the kidneys of your fish and in high levels cause death. Many algae control products contain levels of copper so used in moderation copper is not a killer.

I was wondering if it is possible/needed to add bio filter media such as bio balls mixed with the gravel or bio sponge media in layers in the gravel? Also would this set up work as a temporary quarantine or grow out tank for koi?

    Hello.
Can you confirm something for me which I've been getting to find out for about 1 week now? I have been doing research by watching video's like your's & looking at advice on the internet like groups on F.B. I have been informed that Pea SHINGLE should be used which IS different to Pea GRAVEL although they are listed as being the same in the shops, I understand that Pea SHINGLE is made out of Limestone where as the GRAVEL is made out of STONE! Does it matter which one I use?
    Thanks from the UK.

I really want to make this as an additional filter and water feature to my pond. And maybe have a place to raise baby koi and goldfish. But, it is impossible to order these sized bins. I emailed Laguna, and they say that they don't sell this specific product(pt795). They referred me to the "parent company" Rolf Hagen. Well, Hagen does not sell to the public. How can I get one of these? Or what can I use that is similar?

Yes. In this style of bog filter I don't recommend going DEEPER and I would go a minimum depth of 8"

+mastmalang70hk When the bog filter fills side to side be sure to thin the aquatic plants out by 1/3 to keep new areas for roots to grow.
