The only issue with this video is wherein Eric say's to place the manifold with the cuts on the manifold directed down - facing the liner. Don't do it - you'll regret it in that if you do so within a years time the water pressure blasting into the manifold from the skimmer will result in a leak in your pond liner. The pond digger series along with their products are imo the best out there. The Helix pump and the Helix skimmer have been operating flawlessly with virtually zero maintenance for just about two years now. Have not lost one koi due to the wonderful design of the fish safe skimmer. Anyway,...have a liner to replace,..along with constructing a newly designed manifold. What a pain! :)
One suggestion I would give, a lesson learned, is to make sure the slits cut are enough to effectively distribute the water with regards to the pump. I had a relatively low power pump, going to the bog filter, but the cuts I made to the pipes weren't big enough and all it did was put undue pressure on the pump as it tried to crank out its normal g/ph but the slits weren't big enough and the pressure built up. I would suggest testing to see if the water flow is about as desired by running the system before putting any rocks or plants in.
Good point. We recommend error on the side of too many holes or slits on a pressurized return side. I have seen small holes in PVC with high pressure pumps actually bore holes in concrete! Imagine what that does to liner!
This question reminds me - if I’m trying to find the right size pump for the pond, what extra considerations are there with the water pushing up through the bog? If any. It seems like it would take more pressure for water to be pumped up through the bog than just emptying into the top.

I always push the water out the bottom. It keeps the bottom of the filter more active and it also equalizes in the pipes before the water lifts up through the gravel. Additionally it buys you more time from the roots of the plants working their way into the pipes.
This method can certainly be used for aquaponics!!!!
Not gunna lie. If I did half that much gluing up it would look like I was wearing blue gloves,not to mention buying my wife a new table. It's fun to watch someone with skill.

The slots are so narrow, will they get clogged ?
I like the smooth rock vs. lava rock point about the plants. But I also like the effectiveness of the lava rocks. Do you think a good alternative or compromise would be to put down a bottom layer of lava rocks then move to smooth for most of it? Or I guess another idea would be those manufactured plastic filter balls as a bottom layer? Or is it just not that important?
The roots become the massive spot for bacteria to colonize. I love lava rock but don't use it in my bog filters. It's good to see you contemplate alternative methods. I am not a fan of bio balls in pond filter applications.

I'm building an upper and lower pond with a 12 foot height difference, and a 35-40 foot stream between the two. I've been looking at the PVC idea along with a few aquablocks (already purchased those) for a bog filter in the upper pond. For back washing I assume I would need some access with another pvc pipe to flush it out but I think I would just end up flushing stuff into each branch. I am trying to avoid the expense of a snorkel and centipede. Any advice would be great!

What's the reason for putting the filter slits facing down? Is it critical?
Thanks for your compliant! Yes it is critically important for the holes of the bog filter return to be in the down position. We don't want the gravel below the pvc to become non active. When we push water into the pvc manifold we want the water to flow out at the very bottom of the filter bed to give every section of the gravel to become ACTIVE. When using the 2" pvc it takes almost 2 to 3 inches of gravel to cover the top of the pipe. If we are using 12" of gravel and the outlet holes are on the top of the pipe, that levels 25% of our gravel non active. Hope that gets you on track. Best of luck to you on your project!

Question...If I am going to build a pond that incorporates a large bog filter, waterfall and skimmer with internal water pump, can I use one water pump from the skimmer to divert the water to the waterfall and bog, or would I need 2 pumps?
Would this application work on a larger scale?
don't know if this is still an active comment log but I have a question? Why do you need the manifold at all incline the bog tank a few degrees and have incoming water enter at for end. Wouldn't it do the same thing as it fills to the overflow and into pond? Really like this concept by the way!

Hoping you can help, love your videos so informative. I'm worried the water to my bog plumbing isn't reaching the outer pipes. I have a huge bog, about 50'x6'x'1' pond is about 7500 gal. @ 18' round 3.5' deep. I have 2 pumps to bog (one at each end) they are each about 4500 gph. I worry my water is being directed to the pipes closest to where the pump hose connects to bog plumbing but not the outer pipes. Help! I'll try to attach a pic.. crap sorry no pic possible ugh..
I notice you have a plastic bin you are placing your piping with the holes facing down. what is your opinion for someone using a rubber liner. Should the slots be facing up or down?
Your videos are the greatest; really fascinating. Thanks for posting them and for making them of such high production quality. I wonder, since the slots are so evenly made across the manifold, if the water doesn't tend to come out of the near-end of the manifold in greater quantity than the far end. Have you ever, say, run a test with colored water to see how it really comes up out of the gravel when you hit the pump?
Thank you for the feedback. My producer is AMAZING! the flow in the system will change depending on the loading of the system. It's ever changing. We have done dye tests.

I don't think you mention it in this series, but you should also be sure to test whatever rock you use to make sure it's not going to make your pH go nuts. Limestone and some other types of rocks will cause you to have a high pH which can negatively impact the absorption levels for your plants. Clay pebbles are best, and are lightweight (but expensive). You can test your rock by seeing if it's reactive in vinegar. If it bubbles, use something else!
Letters from a Psychopath That is solid advice. In our area the rock we have in abundance is an inert granite. I typically will suggest the homeowner check with their local rock yard to see the prevalent rock being used by local pond builders. Good Looking out Letters!

Can you confirm something for me which I've been getting to find out for about 1 week now? I have been doing research by watching video's like your's & looking at advice on the internet like groups on F.B. I have been informed that Pea SHINGLE should be used which IS different to Pea GRAVEL although they are listed as being the same in the shops, I understand that Pea SHINGLE is made out of Limestone where as the GRAVEL is made out of STONE! Does it matter which one I use?

Do you have any videos of building large active bog filters for big ponds? I am looking to build about a 4600 gallon koi pond with bog filter.

could i fill the bog filter with sand with a layer of gravel at the bottom instead of gravel throughout?

Lynn F. The distribution of water flow will be a little off in the beginning but it will balance out after the bog matures. Do use heavy, deep rooted aquatic plants like umbrella palms. Use aquatic plants like taro, pennywort, ruby runner, lotus and such. We need to shoot a bog maintenance video. It is in the plans but might be a while before we get to it.

Love your videos! I have watched your video a couple of time and I am inspired to build a pond with the bog filter. My husband help me made the manifold with the slit similar to yours; however i messed it up when i tried to help. Not knowing he had already made the slits and had them facing down , I went ahead and create the slit on the back side of the slits that were facing down 😕. So my question to you is: Is it okay for my manifold to have both slits on top and bottom of the pvc? My PVC is 1.5" for a bog that is 3'x3'. Can you tell me the purpose of the manifold? Can I just run the flexible pvc from the pump to the bottom of the bog and and let the water fill the bog? water naturally will fill the container it is in right?
Lynn F. The slits are in the pipe to help evenly distribute the water through out the entire bog.
the pressure (and hence distributed exit volumes) would be more equal if the filter entrance was in the center. This could be achieved easily if the entrance was affixed like a ninth arm in the middle and then elbowed up the side of the bog.
Great video and lots of good information but would it not be better to to put the end caps on without glue so the manifold can be cleaned if roots grow into it?I have a filter that is close to what you built but not as big that is not glued at all.
I want to construct a waterfall on a 15'x30' pond. Would this be the same concept on a bigger scale, for example my 15'x30' pond? We have ducks and I need a vacuum system on the bottom of the pond to keep it clean. I also would love suggestions on the type of vacuum pump to use.
when you laid the piping in the bin you laid it with the slots down. shouldn't they be up? to force the water upwards?
Echoing the thanks of many others - but you just answered my prayer of what to do on my patio. Forgive me if already mentioned - Would it be good to keep caps off until after using skilsaw to get rid of any cutting debris from the inside of the pipe? Great tips tho - looking forward to the rest of the videos.
Thank you for the feedback. Keeping the shavings out is a good idea but not the end of the world if some remain. They actually make some filter media out of pvc shavings!
Can the filter be made for 2 small ponds on each side?
My saw won't adjust, so can I use a angle grinder to score the PVC?

Hi, nice work. Do you recommend wrapping the slotted PVC with a porous medium like underlayment or fine mesh screen to keep the fibrous roots from growing into the pvc slots?
+Kevin Williams I do not. The screen or underlayment will get clogged and the roots from the plants will tie up the screen or underlayment too.

If you replaced that smooth stone with lave rock you would have 6 times the filtration at least. It cuts up roots? Never noticed..actually I never had any reason to check.

Damian Yeo 4" pipe would require more flow rate... We use larger pipe on larger ponds with more flow.

If this was a DIY project, you would not use PVC primer. I mean let’s be real, it just isn’t necessary for something like this, that’s overkill.

Your videos are amazing and have sparked a few ideas in my mind for both ponds and aquariums but i have run into a dilema. Would it be smart to use a settlment tank before your bog or would it hinder the plants? Also what size pipe should be used?
Ricardo Lomeli I would suggest a settlement tank before the pump and then send the water to the bog if possible. It will hold the plants back a little but not much! The diameter of the pipe will be decided on the flow rate of your pump.
What would you recommend for a 396 gph pump?
First, thank you for taking the time to put these videos together and post them. But PLEASE figure out how to fast forward the video past the repetitious steps. I don't need to watch you prime 15 pipes one by one, each side. Show me once at normal speed, then accelerate (not cut out) as if fast forwarding through the rest. Thanks

It's probably not too late to fix it if you're interested in doing so. There is likely software that will read the file, and then let you edit it - where "edit" involves a wide variety of things including fast forwarding. I was about to say the first thing I would check out is www.videolan.org/vlmc/ But I checked, and it is not stable at the moment. I've never used it, but I'm familiar with their VLC product which is a video player, not editor. Based on that, I would guess that the editor will be just as awesome. Until it stabilizes however, something else will have to do.
Just do it yourself it's so easy to skip forward a few minutes

YES!!! I agree. I was wearing eye protection in the other videos. Funny thing is production is always on me about wearing hats and shades so I had them off (accidentally) because we were filming. We are alway big on safety glasses! Thanks for putting my feet to the fire on safety!

Once you glue one piece in place, we get the idea. You can move onto the next step. I really want to watch to the end, but my time is being wasted watching something I figured out after seeing it done twice.
