I love this! I will be adding a cheap solar power fountain to a barrel pond, for aeration. I was worried about increased evaporation, but this kind of venturi will allow me to aerate, with a water pump, without disturbing the waters surface.
Put a bit smaller sized tube on the output side. That will enhance the ventury effect even more. One and a half inch in length will do. Because of the smaller diameter, the water will have to go faster, and therefore, it will draw in even more air.
@@SaludaGradeFarm We used to reduce the water pipe to a smaller Tee and then increase the pipe again on the output. This creates the water flow to increase creating more suction of air.

I install piping to science labs in universities as a commercial plumber. An engineered venturi involves say a 3/4" tee, then 4-5" further you add a 3/4" 90°. If the line continues then you just add another 3/4" tee the same distance apart. You pipe both lines going to the same location but in the beginning of both lines you install 3/4" X 1/2" tees. You glue in a piece of 1/2" pipe to join both lines together in the beginning section. This is a scientifically engineered venturi. We usually use schedule 80 pvc or sometimes schedule 80 cpvc. Interesting vid.
I use a 2” pump with 5000 gpm for my main system, it actually does quite poor deeper than a couple inches. My smaller system use a 3/4” venturi with a 620 gpm pump, they won’t great at 8” but cannot go any farther than that.
You don't need airstones to "oxygenate" water...WHAT YOU NEED IS LOTS OF WATER SURFACE MOVEMENT...so a high flowing pump where the water sprout is level to the water surface is enough to move the surface of the water constantly...or you can use a DIY sprinkler...
*SUGGESTION:* *Placing the air inlet right before the pump impeller allows the bubbles to get smashed down in size...leading to far more oxygenation of the water.* Large bubles quickly rise to the surface, and this elads to less oxygen getting absorbed into the water.
@@ErikAnders *I use a 1/4 HP submersible pump, and a 1/5" poly tube......My water is so oxygenated it turns milky white with almost zero bubbling at the surface.* The bubbles just hang in the water and my fish only need it to be on for 30 minutes a day. Basically aren't you 'cavitating' the pump impeller? This increased cavitation usually kills a pump. Not saying it is, just saying cavitation is something that is generally avoided. If it works it works.
Good question, and I am by no means an expert, but considering pvc pipe is frequently cut and used in potable water plumbing, hydroponic, and aquaponics all across the world one could assume it’s safe for fish. The main thing I have heard is just stay away from flexible pvc as it has plasticizers in it. Also, this is quite common in aquariums, most of the people viewing this video are using this idea for aquariums and koi ponds 👍 hope this helps!
I am wanting to sink one of these down to the bottom of my pond. I want it in a skimmer bucket and run pipe down to the bottom of the pond. I hope it works.
It will work, just size your water pump to circulate your solution at least 1 time every hour , preferably a bit more. I have 5000 gallons and a 5000 gallon pump running through 3 of these 1” venturis. I get pretty healthy roots but they could a little better if I had a 6500 gph pump going through the same 3 venturis, but I might add 1 more if needed.
The “side” of the tee is called the “Bull” of the tee, the pass through is called the “Run” of the tee. conversion inserts are sold to make a common tee Venturi at supply houses.
Ok. So. I had to improvise. I didn’t have a t with the one smaller hole so I basically 45’d the end of a piece of pvc, 3/4 inch, and made a hole that the 3/4 inch pipe would fit into a piece of 1 inch. It works….except when I push the get up down to the bottom of my pond where my pump sits, it stops pulling air even tho the pipe is well out of the water. As soon as I start raising it up out of the water, it slowly starts pulling air. What am I doing wrong!?
@@diachilders3271 that’s cool improve! not doing anything wrong, the pressure increases the deeper you go and negates the vacuum. Thanks! I use 3 or those 1” units that I’ve made with a 5000 gpm pump. I may need to upgrade the pump a little bit because it aerates a little less every time i added a Venturi. PM us on Facebook @saluda grade farm.
@@SaludaGradeFarm Ha, I think you meant a 5000 gph pump. A 5000 gpm pump would bust those little pipes, then probably knock a whole in your wall😄 I like your design, but my first thought was you are putting a lot of load on that pump and likely decreasing it's strength and life span. Perhaps just adding an aerator pump may be cheaper in the long run. Idk, just a thought. Thanks for sharing your work!
Probably, but what you don’t realize is how massive a system of airsotnes would have to be to aerate a 10x80’ pond. The cost would be tremendous, and the air pump would be large and noisy. I use a 200 watt pump, that’s it! The added benefit in my setup is the circulation added by the water pump too. Good luck!
Clever idea! But how does the size if the bubbles relate to aeration effectiveness? On another air stone video, tiny air bubble size was emphasized, but these bubbles look huge. How would one even measure, or know if one is infusing the air into the water enough?
Good question, the only thing I can tell you is that I have perfect aeration using this system which is a dissolved oxygen level of 8. I have some systems that are 800 gallons and I run a 40 watt 620 gallon per hour pump with one 3/4” venturi. I have perfect aeration with the benefit of circulation, and it’s really cheap and virtually maintenance free. If you are running a small reservoir get an air stone. If you have a larger system, airstones get really expensive and are more of a hassle. So it really depends!
Aeration is not about gas transfer from the bubbles...no matter how small they are. There simply is not enough time for gaseous transfer. Aeration occurs at the surface...and to get that...all you need is agitation. "Small bubbles" agitate the surface more effectively. But if the tank is deep...a small pore airstone has too much pressure on it to work effectively. Hope that helps
The idea is to get as much oxygen as possible into the water, any system using ambient air is limited, with the max being about 8 ppm of dissolved oxygen at sea level. The closer you can get to 8 ppm the healthier the plants will be, I would like to do a video where a measure dissolved oxygen in my system with a meter. Stay tuned!
I’ve switched to just one 2” venturi in the system because the pump failed and the only pump size I could pick up at harbor freight was larger then the existing, so I built another larger venturi. Works just as good as 3 of these but with a lot less plumbing
have you found that the venturi works better, if you only insert the top angled tube , 1/2 way in the tee..or 3/4 into the tee..or is it best to just only leave a small gap like you did in this video ? I was trying to think of a way to use your idea and somehow connect it to a cordless battery powered 18 volt leaf blower , and attach a 20 volt solar panel to the leaf blower, so it would aerate my pond during the day and maybe keep the algae from growing.
you're blocking a ton of water flow. instead of extending the 3/4" pipe down, attach it normally. then heat the 1" pipe to soften it, stretch it out to create a tapered slightly thinner section and trim the taper so that it extends just past the air pipe in the tee with a slight gap around the end of the tapered water pipe inside the tee.
I’ll give that a shot next time, hard part is judging which is better since it already have max DO saturation with this system using atmospheric air. Thanks for the input!

If you want to make it off grid look into the kratky method, other than that you need a pump of some kind, most hydroponic growers have a pump, either a Venturi setup like this, or an air pump kind of like a fish pump.
I learned about venturis in the Navy , the use them for all kinds of things, but yes it’s nothing new, but compared to air stones it’s cheaper and easier in this application.

Make a hybrid solid-liquid rocket with that, yep its a sand blaster kinda
👍
this should reduce flow rate. is int it?
Instead of drill bit, you could have heated 3/4 inch pipe till it gets soft with a hot air gun and force it through the T fitting.
Very interesting, i might try that next time, seems I’m adding a new system every month or so to keep up with demand.
What circulation pump do you recommend? Thanks
Just any pond pump that’s 1-2x your gallons in your system in GPH
May I ask what pump you use?
Great idea!
I'm looking for a way to oxygenate my sprayer for my hay field. Looks cool but i really need to nano bubbles if at all possible. I reckon i could neck it down until I get to 1/4in. What pump are you using? Thanks bro
I hear that you can put a small hose next to the intake of the water pump and the impeller will crush the bubbles. The pump may not last as long, but a pump is cheaper than a nano bubbler. Alternative may be an ozonator?
Btw my dissolved o2 is 8.5 ppm, so cannot really get higher than that on regular air.
Rotary files are a real thing
Yes indeed!
Yes hello. Good video bro, thanks for the free education. Question: What kind of pump are you using? I'm getting ready to do my first hydro grow and I'm planning everything out, and I really like this idea and I want to test it out. Can you give me a quick diagram of what this setup looks like and share a pump and where I can get it? I appreciate any help bro, thank you.
I hope you saw the answer under your other comment.
How to skip right over the PUMP that actually causes the whole thing to work
If you want to make it off grid look into the kratky method, other than that you need a pump of some kind, most hydroponic growers have a pump, either a Venturi setup like this, or an air pump kind of like a fish pump.
Ppl in here acting like Venturis is something new . We been using them in the aquarium world forever
I learned about venturis in the Navy , the use them for all kinds of things, but yes it’s nothing new, but compared to air stones it’s cheaper and easier in this application.
Recirculating pumps also heat up the water.
Not as much as an air pump that compresses air 👍
@@SaludaGradeFarm An air pump is NOT submerged in the water. How can it heat the water?
@@larryd1296 Compressing air heats the air! thats why a diesel engine dont need spark plugs.
The compression makes the air hot enough that the fuel explode when fuel is injected. 😎
A refrigerator-freezer works becouse of gas expanding and cooling the souroundings, hehe
The same process applies to internal aquarium filters and the problem is the noise, how is the noise with this when sucking air?
It is a bit noisy but you can plunk the air pipe outside or baffle it some other way without reducing fair flow.
Thank you Sir.
6 минут видео, о том как соединение сделать их пвх труб на клей. Да ты просто гений
thanks alot i hope i can build it
Welcome!
is your channel named after the saluda grade in NC which was the road going from Spartanburg to Asheville before I26 was finished?
Yes!
@@SaludaGradeFarm cool. I remember as a child riding up or down that road before the inerstate was done. My grandparents would tow their camper up and down also. It was always a bottleneck due to the traffic but was an interesting ride.
Whats the deepest that thiswould work,
This will work to a depth of about 10-12” depending on the strength of the pump and size of the aeration. Most of the time they venturis are set very shallow to get the most oxygenation/flow. Plus it causes a wake on the surface which also increases dissolved o2. I will say the circulation it adds is nice.
I’m
Brilliant!
Thanks!
fluid passing through causing air to be sucked in and on a carburetor its the opposite the air sucks in the fluid
Physics is cool 😎
Really neat👍
Thank you! Cheers!
gotta love physics
Right!
genius idea!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great idea, cheers for sharing, subbed
Sweet thanks!
What size of pump
This is smart :)
Thanks! It also is incredibly effective
how i use to run my protein skimmer
Never hear of it
just feed in the venturi at the bottom of protein skimmer
Could it be used in hydroponics dwc
That’s what this is, I have 2 800 square feet floating raft systems. About to be 4 😃
Who mounted that vice?
😂 that’s how we do it in the mountains 😂
Efficient use of Energy. This concept of pulling air via water flow is also used on some submersible aquarium water pump.
How many 600 gph pumps do you run In this big table?
I run 1 600 gph and then a large 5500 gph on the other end.
