Winter Greenhouse: Testing Sunlight & Surviving the Cold!
How much sunlight is enough for hydroponic lettuce on a cloudy winter day? 🌥️🌱 Join me in my hydroponic greenhouse as I test the natural light levels using the APM130 light meter to measure PPFD, which stands for Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density. This measurement is crucial for understanding how much light your plants are actually receiving and how it impacts their growth. In this video, I will be conducting a straightforward test to see if the sunlight can keep my floating raft lettuce system thriving and flourishing in these overcast conditions. This test is particularly interesting because it will help you understand how different environmental factors, like cloud cover, can influenc...

    I use a watt tester also to make sure the pump is not over working it's self . Better safe than sorry . In the winter i use my aerator also to help the pond heater keep an opening in the ice , Venturis do not work in the winter as they make the water to cold ad won't allow the fish a rest . My laguna aerator that i bought back in 2010 just gave out less than a month ago . I think it was the new substation the electric company put in that they kept having problems with 7 times the power went out and came back on in 1 hour and that has happened now for 4 days and it worked fine before this happened . I never had and issue . This also effected my well pump my pressure tank and my 4 year ol hot water heater . I and a lot of other people hate our electric company . Yet here they are asking for another raise . The electric company said it was a fuse problem and now they want a raise REALLY YOU COST ME MONEY ELECTRIC COMPANY . i HAD TO CALL MY INSUANCE COMPANY . They covered some of the damages seniors are screwed every way . thank god Trump won . Every solar farm they built heer is not for us but they sure are ugly ruined hillsides cut down thousand 's of acreas of trees

    how do you deal with the restriction to water flow this creates for the pump? I currently have several small water falls and a fish spout cascading water back into my pond - Creates some level of aerator back into the pond. However the majority of my water flow goes through a series of drums holding K1 media where the water returned to the pond simply is returned by gravity - These drums rely on my air pump so curious if you think it would be possible to setup a venturi aerator on my system?

    Mid winter is a fine balance between produce and costs but soon recouped with much earlier spring produce . For me i get power cuts at the worst times and if frost gets into the greenhouse then there's a lot of wasted effort to view . I have had quite good results growing on a hot bed in the greenhouse , slightly warmer soil makes a huge difference but its quite a lot of work to set up .

    I have a 10x20 greenhouse that gets partial shade. Was thinking about getting those Barrina t8 blurple led to go across the top. They’re 40w and I’m gonna hook up 5 of them because they’re 4 feet long

    • @SaludaGradeFarm
      @SaludaGradeFarm 20 дней назад

      Those barriana lights have to be directly above the plants, a few inches otherwise they just don’t put out enough light to make any meaningful difference, although the new ones are better than the old ones I can run them about a foot over the plants and I get 150 ppfd over a 4x4’ area. You would be better off, looking into sodium halide or HID depending on what you wanna grow they’re probably just as efficient and just a little more expensive but can cover a 10 x 10 area pretty easily

    • @DickTracy420
      @DickTracy420 19 дней назад

      @ my greenhouse is only like 7 fee high so idk if that would be too close for those bigger lights. Most people have them way far away from their crops in those tall greenhouses

    • @SaludaGradeFarm
      @SaludaGradeFarm 21 день назад

      It depends, for starters you can only do what you can do, but generally 10 hours of 300 is good, but a mixture of 150 ppfd for 16-18 hours will get you some descent growth too. Hope this helps!

    RuBisCO fires only once every 3 seconds. I have used CO2 for almost 20 years and am in the process of converting to carbon based nutrients. I suspect the RuBisCO will still capture carbon in my plants but carbon based nutrients are providing the equivalent of 4000 ppm without the need to expend energy on redox chemistry. I am hoping the plants will have much more available carbon with extra energy to spend on other processes while being healthier measured in BRIX.

    CO2 will increase your yields and quality. This is 100% a fact. I used to run warehouse sized sealed grow rooms. CO2 is not dangerous. You can spend 12 hours in the grow room with very high CO2 levels and be perfectly fine. I did it for years. You would need air conditioning, dehumidifiers, CO2, Co2 controller and lighting controller. Also good to have an environment controller. Maybe something like a Titan controller. I used to design, build, and run fully automated and sealed grow rooms for vegetative state and flowering state of plants.

    What I want to figure out is how to efficiently heat the high tunnel space actually being used. I see a whole lot of air in your high tunnel. The place your growing plants seem to be occupying are no more than a foot off the ground. Your tunnel is what, 10' tall? That's a lot of space to heat where no plants are living. Small tunnels within the big tunnel wouldn't be difficult to do but how could you spread the heat out evenly through those? These are things I'm thinking about. Heating is expensive and I'm poor.

    • @SaludaGradeFarm
      @SaludaGradeFarm 25 дней назад

      Yes, this is the $10 million dollar question and it there are 3 practical solutions to this problem that I can come up with and I might share them in my next video for you, too much to explain here but the main thing you need to focus on is not growing during the winter until you can afford to, that’s what I did. 👍

    • @zmajce4108
      @zmajce4108 14 дней назад

      Thats easy, small hoops with foil covers over the rows like they use in watermelon farming, using radiant heat from heat storages or whatever you use for heating, in europe we use agro textile covers for that but thats just to prevent it from freezing. Balancing cost to performance is key here. My lettuce isnt doing well just because of this extreme temp difference in a non heated very tall greenhouse i made myself (4.5m) so next year imma try something different with it. As far as ive read key to growing winter lettuce is to reduce the temperature extremes.

  • @Nihlink
    @Nihlink 26 дней назад

    Most plants have a metabolism that's directly related to temperature. But that metabolism isn't doing much at night. I live on the Mediterranean sea and grow brassicas and lettuce all winter even when night temps get down to like 37F/3C. But it gets to like 60F/15C every day so they don't really care.

    • @SaludaGradeFarm
      @SaludaGradeFarm 25 дней назад

      Sounds like you’re a great time to grow in, and I’m very jealous! So the point of having warmer nighttime temps so that you can have warmer daytime temp, which increases photosynthesis drastically. If the temperature swing is greater than 15 to 20°F. Then the plants will begin to stress out and they’ll shut down. This was my problem. There’s a study that highlights the differences and the results were quite astounding!

  • @theblobfish9614

    Why would i use co2 if there is no commercial incentive? Its not necessary and somewhat dangerous, maybe not in a greenhouse but an indoor grow setup i wouldnt do it

    • @SaludaGradeFarm
      @SaludaGradeFarm 26 дней назад

      You make some good points! I could make a whole new video on this but to be honest safety is always a huge concern of mine, so first and foremost get a good controller preferably one that connects to WiFi like the INKBIRD. I could address safety concerns for hours, and safety is always huge for me, but definitely if you’re not comfortable at all it’s not worth it. Now the benefits? They’re endless and for various reasons, some people have grow tents in garages for instance and want to reduce their heating demand for instance, but mainly, if you have indoor grow space, mainly a tent, you are paying for all of your production, so doubling or tripling photosynthesis is a major boost to your results, but as I mentioned in the video you have to have your light game on point first 👍

    • @theblobfish9614
      @theblobfish9614 26 дней назад

      @SaludaGradeFarm yes. Co2 is not the first thing i would be concerned about. There are many other things to master first. But co2 is a good way to take your game from 80% to 95 when you mastered all the basics. For me its a bit out of the picture because i use a foil greenhouse, that is not suitable for co2 really because i have to keep the door open, then i got some crops that are just outdoors without tent, if i could raise co2 levels there, i Would not want to do it😂 and indoors i just grow Weed, and i produce more than i can smoke already with a relatively small setup, so no need either. Would be nice to grow a little bit faster sometimes, but patience is part of the game

    • @kenshinhimura9387
      @kenshinhimura9387 25 дней назад

      It's not dangerous. You can literally have a sealed room with over 2,000ppm of CO2 and be fine. You can spend 12 hours a day in that room. I used to do it every single day when I ran warehouse grows. BTW if you switched to a sealed room for your bud, your yields would skyrocket and your buds will be dense and rock hard.

    • @theblobfish9614
      @theblobfish9614 25 дней назад

      @kenshinhimura9387 its not dangerous as long as your equpment works fine. With burners it shouldnt be the biggest problem but with a bottle i would be careful. I work as a brewmaster and it is standard protocol to only use co2 bottles for draught beer that cannot fill the room to a dangerous level even if they empty themselves fully due to some leak or or other equipment malfunction. 2000 ppm is on the high end anyways for growing indoors i think, and yes, those levels are not dangerous. The potential for danger is there though

    • @kenshinhimura9387
      @kenshinhimura9387 25 дней назад

      @@theblobfish9614 That's why you use a CO2 controller and monitor. You can see what the CO2 level in the room is and adjust it as needed. I never went much above 2,000ppm. My plants grew like crazy at those levels and finished 1 week early.

    I can't sell "greenhouse" types of any kind. I tried 😆...Customers down here in Louisiana are picky when it comes to tomatos. I am still growing out mostly big beef hybrid and few rows of parks whoppers in our high tunnel. Bif beef kicks butt every year and beats any greenhouse type hands down imo. But if you're having success selling them more power to you. I do however, grow Sakura as well as sun sugars for the cherry's. Best of luck

      You can get the poles from either a chain link fence supply or Home Depot. The plastic film came from greenhouse mega store, you want to get greenhouse grade plastic because it’s UV resistant 👍

    With your cost for power to run that pump i can use trickle filter instead for surface exchange and have a lot of oxygen and filteration than. Surface exchange is key not the bubbles

    I am a bit curious about your aquaponics project. I did quite a bit of research on that back about 40 years ago. I looked at using tilapia as well as other types of fish, ie; catfish and yellow perch. Even freshwater shrimp and crayfish. Even worms. I guess that would be vermiponics, lol. Anyway, I never did follow up on my research due to personal reasons. Good luck.

      @@Just___me_ Thanks for the comment, I like to hear people’s stories, and it’s an inspiration because I am living so many people’s dreams because I farm full time, have since Covid! Everyone always asks me about aquaponics, and I always tell them it’s not profitable so I don’t do it, well my curiosity finally got the best of me! Moved the talapia outside yesterday, hopefully I can get some video edited! God bless

      @SaludaGradeFarm where do you live? That's rhetorical, you don't have to answer that. It's just that some places don't allow tilapia due to it being invasive.

    • @SaludaGradeFarm
      @SaludaGradeFarm Месяц назад

      Hey, yes the solution runs continuously through the system. To avoid root rot you need to use some type of aerator, either an air stone, waterfall method or Venturi. 👍 hope this helps!

    They're all made in China anyway, at least the electronic components are. The Chinese make stuff to spec, you want shit you get shit. That aside great vid, I came to believe that the cheap purple lights didn't work at all !

      you have a really good point there. I got the term when I was living in a camper and someone said I need to change out the China bomb tires that came with the camper, felt like it was appropriate here too 😆 I have a friend who grows “mature” plants with them but they look awful. He says it’s ok because the customers don’t know what plants are supposed to look like 👀
