    The standby issue has been around since Windows XP - back when I was a corporate tech guy we had one guy melt the back of an old school Latitude because of it. Typically this happens when you tell the system to go into standby and then close the lid before it finishes going into standby.

    Thank you for mentioning the Modern Standby issues. I bought an XPS 17 last year and it suffered from overheating while "sleeping," freaked me out at first since I'd just spent like $2k on the machine and was worried I had a hardware issue. Turns out Windows' Modern Standby feature is complete trash, like you mentioned. Following the suggestions of what I read online, I just switched to Hibernate mode and it's been smooth sailing ever since. It is kind of a half-assed "fix" though, so I hope Microsoft fixes it since it's such a widespread issue.

      I have a desktop PC from 2016 and can't get it to stay of after i put it in sleep, I have hybernate on which takes some time to finish with 32GB of memory but I'm always cutting the power now after the hybernate because otherwise it wil randomly tun on (sometimes it even tries to boot again just after the lights turn of). I always thought it was a problem with my motherboard (I already turned all the powerup options of, from USB, keyboard mouse and Network in the BIOS). But this kind of news makes me suspect windows still does something with the RTC power up options.

    I think the difference between Canada and EU specced Yoga laptops comes mainly because of customers demand. In the EU, people buy Yoga for thin and light office machine. The best selling spec here is the i7 with no Nvidia GPU, which covers portability and office hours per battery life. Nobody really looks at the Yoga series as an entertainment tool, but rather as a trusty business tool.

    That’s a damn fine laptop! I’ve loved my Legion 5 from 2020, Lenovo is a fantastic price-performance option for mobile computing. That screen is beautiful. Awesome first look as usual, Alex.
    If I could say one thing about the audio in this episode, however. Alex sounded a bit like he was in a box, like he and the mic were facing a plastic wall. That’s it. I did like the point of showcasing how the webcam reacts in different light scenarios. With how work-from-home is still very much a reality for many, I think webcam or screen specs and demonstrations in different physical environments outside of the studio lights should be highlighted more. Just some critique, my opinions mean squat but I thought I’d point it out

    Interesting note about this chassis: it's also available with an AMD Ryzen R7 7735HS CPU but has different names in NA and EU (Lenovo Slim Pro 7 vs Yoga Pro 7 14). Notebookcheck reviewed it and attested the AMD version really good battery life (13 hrs web surfing test), maybe even better than the Intel model. It's also available with the 120 Hz screen and the 3050, although only max 16 GB RAM (cause we can't have AMD have the same chances).
    It's kinda obscure and hard to find, but searching for '14ARP G8' will lead you to it. It's around 1,479€ in Germany, with the R7, a 3050, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD.
    A very nice device and the only real AMD rival of things like the XPS 15 while being much cheaper.

    Something I think you guys should look at for the repairability segment is the keyboard. My last Lenovo machine used plastic rivets to hold the kb in, awful for repairability. I hope they stopped doing that. I loved the keyboard but one liquid spill and a diy keyboard replacement later and it was just mushy as the entire board gets pushed downward by one key press.

    My dad still uses his decade old ThinkPad. Old i5 served me well in some light gaming then. Honestly, still a decent feeling device and if he got an SDD and bumped up the ram from 8GB to 16GB, it would have still have a couple years of a decent experience left in her. Recently just upgraded a Dell workstation to replace my mom's Windows 7 Lenovo desktop. Specs were the only thing holding it down, clean boot and a Linux install makes them still very usable machines.

      Agreed, stay away from Windoze and don't expect it to behave as fast or at the very modern tasks as the big monster modern CPU and even the Core2Duo's have lots of life left in them and 8Gb is enough even for pretty large browsing sessions... @LMG When providing specs on laptops you really should include what they are power limited to (i.e. 45W, 80W, 130W, etc.).
    This makes a huge difference in thermals and performance... there is no point in spending more on a high end laptop GPU if it is power limited to 80W, when it could go to 150W+... literally paying for nothing at that point.
    I know the laptop in this video has a lower-end GPU but the 3080Ti in the Razer Blade 14 vs Lenovo Legion series is a good example of why I commented/recommended this.

      that's the exact reason why better gpu in laptops doesn't really matter if it has bigger power limit and better cooling as you said

    • @LizardVideoDude
      @LizardVideoDude 2 года назад +1

      Agreed. Since laptop manufacturers can power limit the CPU and GPU - which is separate from _thermal_ limits due to the cooling solution - the actual performance might not match what you paid for. Laptop makers can be pretty deceptive this way, with marketing and configuration upselling components the machine isn't properly designed to handle. Thin-and-light laptops are the worst in this regard, naturally being less able to supply gigawatts of power and dissipate nuclear-level heat output of top-of-the-line components.

    • @jachupol5823
      @jachupol5823 2 года назад +4

      @@LizardVideoDude A good example for this is the fact that some laptops have 3050 in them, but they can cost from 700$ to even 1300$, and it's usually not because manufacturers overpay for their laptops, it's better quality of the components, better heat dissipation, higher power limits so better performance

    Matte touche screen display. Apparently its because of fingerprints showing/adhering less to glossy and glossy allowing for easier use because of smoother surface. I guess it makes sense. Like i never saw a matte screen cellphone. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried a "matte screen cover" before on a touch screen laptop?

      I have tried 5 matte screen protectors from various companies including all the way from Germany. None can match a factory matte screen and they all give you a slight fuzziness, but they're still better than gloss.

After the last video I tried disabling it to see if the exact issue I've been having with 6 laptops in a row now would go away and no it sadly did not. It's definitely not just a windows issue as well as one of those 6 laptops was a 12" Macbook A1634 which would do the exact same thing running whatever MacOS was current at the time.

    how does it compare against a used (-> same price) razer blade? i'd expect the razer blade to have better cooling. but i've seen reviews saying that the razer blade base has insufficient cooling and this video states the slim 7 has good cooling. is that just the different expectations?

      Well these new components are more power efficient than what an used Razer would have. Also (powerful) older laptops all had insufficient cooling, the fact that this one isn't bothering with the noise is remarkable. Pretty sure you can avoid modern standby by using hibernate, which is superior in every way considering modern SSD based systems really have no trouble starting back up in under 10 seconds from hibernate.

    • @ATKthesecond
      @ATKthesecond 2 года назад +9

      Hibernate is great, Modern Standby can suck in the config that Microsoft has implemented as default, but can be quite a bit faster at resuming than Hibernate even with an SSD. I found that a great middleground is to disable Modern Standby's 'Network Connected' mode. This removes the battery drain/heating issues and leaves you with a very speedy resume from sleep. Still agree that hibernate has its own merits though
