After seeing the power draw, heat, and battery drain charts, I am highly considering the Pavillion Plus. That 7840U is very impressive. The H and HS series are nice for power users, but if I'm using over 60 watts I may as well be using desktop (or a gaming laptop i guess). Besides - it have an OLED screen!

I picked up the Pavilion plus 14 based on Josh's video and it's been a great laptop all around, very happy with it! It's so hard to find good and efficient apu only laptops that aren't intel or Apple based, and this one hits all the check marks for me. I hope HP continues this product line but gives the future plus versions at least 24 gigs of lpddr5x. I feel like the entry level 8 gig models should get axed for 12 or 16, give the pavilion plus line 24 and everything higher 32 gig options. lpddr5 memory is so cheap it's ridiculous. There's no need for manufacturers to skimp out on it anymore. Sorry went off on a tangent lol, but yea great laptop!

@@jeevejavari8461 After watching a bunch of Josh's videos on various laptops, I'm feeling like the hp pavillion plus 14 is gonna be my only option in this price range - it's $1500AUD on sale, but then if I want to consider something that is a step up, like the hp spectre 14 that Josh recommends, I'm looking at like near the $3k mark for that TT TT. I know compared to the asus zenbook 14 (2023) the pavillion plus has less battery life and not as a good a build quality, but I feel like both have pretty good battery life anyways that I'm willing to trade some battery for the extra performace of the pavillion plus' cpu. I also was not prepared to sacrifice screen quality with a 2024 zenbook (the difference in PPI is WILD).
How would you say the battery life and performance are? I'm always wary that there's only so much you can get from these sorts of tests and that real-world performance and use will shift things

This was a god sent review. I’ve been conflicted between getting the legion slim 5 14inch but wish it had touchscreen so I’ve been looking at the pro 7 and yoga 9i.
I know Asus ROG would be a great fit but I had so many issues with my last gaming laptop from years ago and sending it in for repairs several times that I want to try a different brand.
I want dedicated graphics, preferably 32gb is upgrading isn’t an option and a touchscreen with low fan noise and heat.
I’m a casual all round user that believes in longevity when it comes to tech so I don’t want to make the wrong call and be stuck with the laptop

they are not identical. 680M uses RDNA2 architecture for its Compute Units, while 780M uses RDNA3. The performance difference is not huge, but the display and media engine is also upgraded so you get AV1, DP2.1, HDMI 2.1, etc etc. In games the difference is not very big, you are right.

I have the Slim Pro 7 Zen 4 and the ASUS 14 (I am deciding which one to return). The Slim 7 screen looks very dim for 350nits, the white balance is off so I think that's why it looks dim. The whites look cream coloured, making it look dull and less easy to read. That paired with the glossy screen is a mistake on Lenovo's part. Frustrating as I like everything else about it (minus the power button, which is annoying).
the ASUS 14 screen is SHARP and bright, but I could only get one with the version with 5 7530U, which may be the culprit for the horrible fan noise even with light use. This thing sounds like a plane taking off, compared to the Slim 7 being very quiet.

I got my 7840hs model on sale at $859 with an additional nursing discount for a total of $816.99.
While the 3050 6gb dedicated GPU isn't a powerhouse, it does give me additional capability to do some light gaming while traveling. This is a definite bonus in my book.
If you can get this laptop for under $1000, it seems like a solid contender.

What do you think about the Yoga Pro 7 14 GEN 9? I just bought it for £680 on sale and it has:
AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS Processor (3.80 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)
    Integrated AMD Radeon 780M
    16 GB LPDDR5X-6400MHz
    512 GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC
    14.5" 3K (3072 x 1920), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%DCI-P3, 400 nits, 120Hz
I think this version is a lot better than the model you have just reviewed. The 400 nits is surely better than the 350 nits version you were reviewing it also has a 3K 120Hz resolution compared to the 2.5k 90Hz one you reviewed. I think this newer model seems pretty good for the price I bought it for. The only thing I would want is 32GB RAM but I think I will do fine with 16GB. I am going to University in September to study software development so I needed a new laptop and for the price range I bought it at I couldn't find any better it was pretty much a no brainer for £680!

Josh I think your original review is actually very accurate. I got Yoga Pro 7 but returned it in a week. The trackpad is the absolute worst I’ve used on any laptop. The click unbearably loud and requires too much force. The hinge also feels stiff and cheap. Sometimes I can open with one hand, sometimes not. I dare say the track pad and hinge are worse than my Legion pro 7i gaming laptop. I guess most people just completely overlook or don’t care about these things.

I have both the Schenker Vision 14 and the Slim Pro 7 here and between the two, the Lenovo machine just seems better built, cooler, more efficient. It's good enough for me to keep. Also I have the 400 nits screen with a 4050 that runs at 35W. The amount of different configurations for this chassis is definitely too many and at this point it seems like Lenovo is trying to confuse its buyers.

Slim 5 14 is actually quite a big laptop btw, so to go to the Slim 7i from that is not a huge portability hit. The Slim 5 14 is a 14.5 inch screen. The Slim 7i is a 16. Plus the Slim 7i is a much nicer machine.

This would show itself both at the stress test but also crucially at the battery life test you run. I believe that is the reason why the Zen 4 U series are so much better than the HS versions because all that is different between these chips is power limits but primarily is the Volt/frequency tuning.

All nodes on the first version experience poor efficiency. As we get to smaller nodes, it does appear that it takes longer for them to get the process right. An example is TSMC and Samsung 3nm modes; both report issues with efficiency on their N3. TSMC will become more efficient on version 2.

You are compromising on every other metric for higher spec. If you want a great laptop, the MB Air M2 is miles better, from speaker, keyboard, trackpad, battery life, fan noise, quality, etc. Obviously, you are trading that off with lower specs (8GB/256GB). But the Air will give you a far better experience for those that are fine with that.

Hi Josh! I absolutely love your videos - I’ve been watching since the days of that 2 room apartment where you had to film at specific times in the day to beat the glare! I’ve been torn, and I’m wondering: I’m a law student, and have noticed my M1 MacBook Air 8gb slowing down in terms of the tabs I can have open, but I mainly just have a lot of different windows open at once, and switch between them. I really like laptops that are portable, but would also like a slightly bigger screen to be able to multitask better. I really prefer a small footprint, though. The question is, do I get the M2 Air 13 with 16-24 gigs of ram, or wait until the M3 Air, and hope that the 15 inch comes with more ports and is a bit lighter?🧐 With how I use my laptop 8 hours a day, I would appreciate the bigger screen, but the heaviest laptop I’ve used was the 3.0 pound MacBook Pro from 2018, and once you’ve used the Air for 3 years, anything heavier feels massive 😅 Thank you so much, and keep up the wonderful work!

Firstly wow, big thanks for watching so long.
There is always something better coming. For your use case a 13inch or 15inch MacBook Air with 16g of memory would be ideal.... so long as you can buy from somewhere like B&H which offers discounts on custom configs. I can give you a link if you can find it there (the links help the channel)
the 15inch is already ludicrously light for what it is. The 13inch with m2 has a larger display than the m1 air which you'll notice.

Btw they don't tend to discount newer laptops as much, which kind of offsets the .... wait for a new one vs buy now. That is why its critical you only buy one now IF you get at leasst $200 off MRSP to offset that. Hopefully that makes sense

who should consider buying "used" Macbook (it doesn't cost less than $1000) comparing to a "new" Lenovo? Only Mac lovers.
Zenbook? It doesn't have dedicated GPU, unfair comparison. Yes, I'm a fan of Zenbooks, I had the most first one 10 years ago (it's still around). But the comparison between these 2 devices is unfair, Asus just can't compete (anymore). In particular, there are no Zenbooks with 7840/7940hs and dedicated GPU. And the ones without dGPU aren't competitors for that Lenovo. The ones with Intel CPU are MUCH more expensive and non-comparable from performance/watt perspective (and in overall - worse device for the same money).
So again - the video contains only excuses and proof of incompetence. Sorry, that's a bad behavior for hardware reviewers. Just accept your failure and incompetence, and use it as a space for mindset growth.
One actual rival for that "Creators" laptop - Asus Creator laptop. It's very similar in specs, but it has Intel CPU (which is more expensive and less energy efficient by default). The model is Q540VJ-I93050 (or 90NB11K3-M00380), but it has subpar 13900h (which is relatively the same as 7840hs from performance perspective, but less energy efficient). And that laptop _IS_ $100-$200 more expensive. Oh, and it's 15.6'' (but I can't say is it better or worse, for me - worse). And yes, it uses round jack for power supply, which is not so great in 2024 =). And 150w charger (which is obviously worse from Type-C charging perspective).
