Had to set the record straight on this one. Thanks for watching!
Hey sry to correct you but youre missing something. The -18 DB Headroom in the VU Meter is at Zero (not between 10 and 20 like your explanation), because your Headroom Level in the PlugIn itself is set to -18. Thats why youre way of Gain Staging is going to be at -30 DB and could cause some loudness issues if you have a bad recorded Voice.
I Appreciate your work and education skills, keep up the work and i hope i was able to help someone who needs this little Tip :)
Greetings from Germany
Jaffxx
I was going l to say the same thing it has to be near the red at zero for the sweet spot not the way she showed us.
It is quite wrong.
It's always something when you have an engineer hover over your shoulder haaha the vocals sounded fine bro chill
It's a ballpark range not an exact. what she said would be within this average on the VU.
Oh I see. You're saying she's saying -18 on the Vu where it should be closer to zero on the VU. IDK if you can calibrate that VU meter to -18 in logic though
Such a solid overview on gain staging in logic, thank you!
Always appreciate your videos 🙏🏽♥️
I wish you had a logic master class or a group where these topics are brought up. Lots of people (like myself) just play adjust volume in mixer thinking it's gold. this is about to change my life!
Just found your channel and I must say, I like the way you approach topics [at least what I have seen so far]. You have gained a new subscriber.
Many thanks.
Ben.
Ur my teacher
im learning lots -ur way of explaining is awesome . Thnks
Thank you so much for the lesson,I really really appreciate your lessons because you teach in a very easy way.
such a simple tip but it made such a difference, thanks for sharing!
Why would you ever want your vocals to max out at 32db prior to it hitting the plugins?
No offense; however, I don't believe you know what you're doing in terms of the VU meter. Don't get me wrong, the end result is there and it works for you and this actually highlights how none of these "gain staging" stuff matters if it sounds good in the end.
But the simple fact that you're referencing -18db on a VU calibrated to -18 shows that your whole approach, as you understand it, is way off.
On that VU meter, you should be striving to GET to ZERO on the needle (VU calibrated to -18) to reach around -18 (momentary) LUFS/-18RMS.
Agreed!
Just out of curiosity, what's your method? and how long have you been in the game?
@@TheSilverConductor It's just a process that works for me. In my vocals, I use a dB meter to hit a specific dB number that works for me (-6dB) *find a number that works best for you*.
Throughout all the things I add to a vocal (Comp,EQ,Saturation,Deessing, etc...) it needs to hit the same dB reading (after adding each one) as it had before any plugin got thrown on it.
After that, I mix the vocals into the beat (overall fader up/down - normally ALWAYS lower). If it doesn't sit super well then I either tweak the beat or just use something like Nectar Relay and/or Sidechain Soothe2 on the beat so that it (the beat) is attenuated (lowered) frequency wise when the vocal is on so they (vocals) carve out a space within the beat.
So my issue with her video is the explanation of the VU meter and how she understands it. Her process works for her and that should really be the main takeaway - find a process that works for you. However, I will say that I would never drive my vocals or any sound into a plugin at -32db... that just doesn't make sense to me but if it works it works.
Totally got what you were saying in your original analysis @OverlookeDEnT but I’m confused why you have to be rude about it? Her willingness to share what she knows has helped more people than it has harmed. People are allowed mistakes here and there. Maybe cut her some slack and recognize how lucky we are to have access to this kind of content completely free of charge. The last thing we want is for people to stop sharing knowledge because of demotivating comments.
@@SarihnD I wasn't rude about anything.
Liked the VU meter part. Great video🌟
Thanks so much ❤️
very good tutorial but I really like your song you used as well! keep up the good work !
good job , really like your channel keep it up
love the track and tutorial
Thank you for these tutorials and giving female producers greater visibility ❤️
What’s a female ?
@@javy2871 yo mama
Agreed! I’m starting to lean toward exclusively working with female engineers.

SO GOOD 💎
Thank you!!!! 🙏 😊
nice track VAL!
nice one Valentina
Hey, here's my thumbs up and im a subscriber as well. appreciate your videos But in looking out my friend.... dBSF (digital) & dBVU (analog) are to different methods to measure the same thing. like Inches and centimeters. they both measure distance but different standard. -18-dBSF is actually equivalent to 0-dBVU (sweet spot) and 0-dBSF & +18 dBVU (clipping point). its all a bit confusing but i just learned the difference myself.
Exactly. In theory, she should WANT to get to 0 on that needle, based on her calibration (-18) not -18 on the meter itself (assuming she wants to get to -18RMS). Or if she wants to just reach -18db then just adjust the gain according to that reading on her fader and not a VU meter. I was watching like... 🤦♂️
Great video thank you! Only one question. Is the Gain area you lowered in the top left to -9.6 the only area you gain stage the beat or vocal for each track? Or do you also take away volume on the vocal track itself next to the pan L/R Icon?
I MusicLuv It! One of the best explanations on the subject I've seen and heard here YT :-) Thanks a Platinum. The SC.
This may be a silly question but isn't putting your gain plugin at the very start (top) make your other plugins (such as compression) work harder? Wouldn't it make more sense to put your gain plugin at the end of the chain? If I'm sending say bass tracks, out to the studio, & trying to send everything off at say, -12db.... shouldn't I be putting the gain plugin at the end? (Again, very sorry if this is a silly question)
So after gain staging some vocals on a mix I’ve been working on; I noticed a muddiness that I couldn’t hear before. It was like the higher volume hid the frequencies. Thank you for schooling me on this
Pretty song
Wow!
Your info and descriptions are so cool. I am new to production and I don’t fully understand busing vocals and how it works could you do something on this.? Thanks
Hii Valentina. Thanks for this video. Really cool..I want to know this, Gain staging max db -6 is ok but what should the minimum db be? Regards
Esa rola está durísima 🔥🔥🔥, me muero por escucharla completa
I appreciate your content but do have a question. Do you need a gain plug at the start AND end of each track, or just at the start or at the end?
thanks mam
could you do a video on panning? and maybe a video on vocal layering/harmonies/etc. thanks :)
It’s coming soon 😏😎
So I typically gain stage all my tracks to -18db before processing. I know when they are processed the gain level will change. Would it be wrong for me to gain stage again to -18db on tracks before levelling the mix?
Even after producing for a couple years every time I click on one of your videos I always know I’m about to learn something
2 questions.. if you record your vocals at a low volume is there any need to gain stage at all? Also do you always gain stage after you record your vocals or after?
I would say better to record the vocals without gainstage with good input, and then when you are complete with the session , start your gainstaging + leveling , it s important to leave arround 6db space at the end for the mastering ..
Is It necessary to gain stage the beat and if so what level should the beat touch in the vu meter
Very good...
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
WHATS THE NAME OF THE SONG YOUR USING??!
Please look up how a VU meter act and how it is used. That Information is very misleading 0VU equals -18dBfs RMS
OOOO WHAT SONG is thisss
But you have to set all the faders to unity 0 before you start gain staging! Otherwise you are getting the wrong measurement to on your meters.
If I slap on gain plug ins on my tracks instead …… would the gain plug in have to be #1 on the plug in chain ? Or can it be at the end of the chain ???????
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You want it to be the very first :)
@@bigacreations got it … I tried hearing both and couldn’t hear a difference …..but “first” makes more sense . I think ….. LOL🔥🔥🔥🔥
😊🥰
wow everything I think I understand im relearning.. lol does anyone know if she has a video for gainstaging beat stems as well lol.. omgosh
Is VU Meter built into Logic? If so, where can I find it?
Don’t believe there is one in logic.
Some people do it and others don’t. I don’t gain stage ever. I need full power.
Just had a triple Grammy Award winner tell me that the track I let him hear was error free. Flawless.
Just use your ears. The ultimate goal is to get a great sounding track right?
If gain staging gets you there then do it. If you’re hearing your music the way you intended for it to sound without it, then don’t use it.
It’s all about your ears. All the rules are there for you to either follow or ignore.
Good evening Valentine. Tremendous video where you explain your way of doing (Gain Stagin). But I think there is a small mistake in what you are explaining. The (VU Meter) when you take it to (-18) in the Head Room area means, that when the Needle or the marker is hitting the (0) then it marks -18. You can't set the Head Room to (-18) and then say to bring it to -18 like you explain. This is because you are forcing the signal to be duplicated when putting other plugins. This is because you are lowering it more than it is supposed to (-18).
You notice all this when you put all the plugins in (ON) and it goes over (0) Red. Besides, putting other plugins is not supposed to not add signal to your sound. And much more so exaggerated.
With all due respect, it is better that before you create and upload a video you realize what you are going to bring since this can bring confusion to your followers and also be part of a joke for others. I think you have been making many videos for years and they have turned out well for you, but you cannot do these things because you have a large number of people who follow you and you can confuse them. Finally, remember that not everything that sounds nice means that it is well finished or mixed, and much less everything that sounds high means that it is quality. There are people who sing beautifully but don't know how to sing. Buenas noches nuevamente.
You showed a post-fader in the end and worded it as pre-fader.
Isn't a UV meter equivalent to -18dBFS, which is recommended especially for "analog" simulating plug-ins? And are we talking RMS or PEAK? I know you said peak, but I am still a little confused. And because you are using a VU meter for measuring, whether it is one or the other, then it seems to me that the target should be around zero (-18dBFS), and you are going way too low. But then again, as someone commented already, if it sounds good, who cares, right?
I usually don’t comment when I think a video is bad, but I feel I have to this time.
I appreciate you trying your best explaining this really confusing topic, but your explanation is all over the place, and I think this video just adds misinformation to people trying to learn. I’m sorry but you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about here.
Sorry for the harsh comment, I don’t like being mean but this video is just not good :(
What's your method if I may ask?
