I'm a desperately looking for a streaming box that still offers an optical audio output (so that I can use it with a project and soundbar). Apple TV, FireTV and now this Roku all are HDMI only which is only usable with TVs (inferior to projectors).
What you need is called an "HDMI Audio Extractor". Both models claim to be their best wifi yet... are they really? The 4802R emphasizes their Hands-Free Voice Control... is that significantly better than the 4800R's Voice Button? Is the rechargeable remote on the 4802R really difficult to loose with the new Lost Remote Finder? Is the 4802R, at $99.99, worth $10 more than the 4800R? Just looking at the box, my initial impression is "Yes" to all the above questions. But I'm easily swayed by the advertising on a Roku box... my 4802R is due to arrive tomorrow. 🙂 One complaint I have about both models is... Roku doesn't offer bluetooth connectivity for my hi-res headphones. They do offer a 3.5mm audio jack in the remote. Is the Roku remote not some form of a bluetooth device? Yes, just plug the external HD into the USB port. I put in 8 TB since I transfer recording from the Tablo Quad to it. I also use it to run the Tablo app for more recent recordings. All the other versions lack a USB 3.0 or Ethernet port.
For users who enjoy traditional services, this device has plenty of power. and the ethernet and USB ports give it a leg up on the latest Firestick. However, I do not see where the traditional user would need these ports. You have avoided the most important function that is critical to a true streamer, the Roku OS is a closed software platform. No easy side loading which means you best know what you are doing. Therefore, this device cannot compare to a Fire Device.
"Therefore, this device cannot compare to a Fire Device" is true, when it comes to intrusion into your personal affairs. Amazon runs circles around the competition when it comes to tracking every aspect of your life. I find it far easier to block ads and tracking services on the ROKU, than it is to block them on the Amazon devices. That, to me, is the "most important function" on any streaming device!!! With Amazon devices, I am having to change block lists almost daily, as Amazon always seems to find new avenues of getting the data they so desperately depend on. With the ROKU, I am able to set up blocking that lasts for months, and watch ad-free programming without having to constantly tweak the block lists.
No HDMI 2.1 or gigabit ethernet. These parts can be that expensive in 2022. If you can find $50 routers with 4 x gigabit ports, then clearly its a cheap part. C'mon Roku!!

@@ronniemassart3834 You totally misunderstood their question.
@@cooldaddyslick6869 So, why don't you answer it for them? I have been noticing you debunking a lot of complaints, could it be that you are a troll? Just wondering
@@denisehill1705 I would if I had the answer. And how do you know what I've been doing???
*the Advertisement is what we're trying to eliminate and now Roku Ultra has more ads?!* *CRAP!!*
Except this is not the 2022 model. This is the 4800R, the 2022 model is the 4802R. Same device aside from the remote.
I had an old Amazon firestick but I tossed it when I bought my LG smart tv. And ,surprise LG smart tv doesn't support the ESPN Plus app (wtf??? LG!) so I need one of these.F'N LG.
Just got it today for $69.99.
Just got it for $30 black Friday sale.
@@cmw6966 you didn’t get the one in the review. You probably got the stick. I returned the stick for this one in the review which is $69. The bf sale is $69 for this model shwon
@@MrSerr I'm not sure why but if you go to their website it's still on sale for $30. As of 11/26/22.
can one add a local hard drive to play local content?
Yes, just plug the external HD into the USB port. I put in 8 TB since I transfer recording from the Tablo Quad to it. I also use it to run the Tablo app for more recent recordings. All the other versions lack a USB 3.0 or Ethernet port.
@@toriless hello, does it play x265 videos? thanks!
DAM!! 94.00 bucks... you need to update your link or stop pimping for kickbacks.. found on another link to Amazon for 80.00
does it have Plex and Jellyfin clients ?
It has Plex. Can't answer for Jellyfin.
Why would you need gigabit ethernet? It supports up to 4K, which is only 50Mbps.
Xiaomi 4k stick is better for under 100.
NOT 2022
If it had an audio jack, it'd be perfect. But, considering the remote has the option for headphone use and you can easily just buy an HDMI audio extractor for like $20, it's not to much of a deal breaker.
