      I have a 9mm, 45ACP, 357 Magnum, and 44 Magnum but the 10mm is really peaking my interest lately. Probably the best automatic pistol cartridge out there. I consider any automatic pistol cartridge that can run with 357 Magnum to be exceptional. I like 9mm but a lot of people seem to think that a 9mm is on par with 357 Magnum which just isn’t the case..

      Both 10mm & 5.7 shoot "flatter" than 9mm. By that, I mean you don't have to alter your sight picture much between 5 & 55 yards. Or 155 yards, you can go very long with both rounds

    I recently became intrigued by the 10mm as a result of winding up with the newest version of the Colt Delta Elite for a very low price. Now I love it. It's definitely more challenging to run at speed than the .40 S&W or .45 ACP, and surely the 9×19mm. But not really that much more. As with all of the powerful large caliber cartridges, it requires more devotion to training and practice to master. But this is entirely achievable for anyone who can master the .45 ACP. Even a full size 5" barrel 1911 conceals and carries very easily, and is fairly slender for all the power it delivers. 10mm guns do unquestionably accumulate wear more rapidly, and require staying on top of maintenance more. Recoil springs should be changed out every several thousand rounds, as with any other autopistol, and it is rather harder on slide stops from the heavy recoil springs required. But this is easily addressed by routine inspection and maintenance. A careful gunsmith inspection with any necessary tuneup and parts replacement should be conducted every 5,000 rounds or so. 10mm is a truly excellent cartridge that delivers tack-driving accuracy and impressive power for anyone willing to commit to the training requirements. It would be more pleasing if all the ammunition companies loaded it to the full potential. As of now, loads must be carefully selected to get the full power advantage 10mm offers. I use the Delta Elite as a street gun regularly.

So I will have to drive down to MD to handgun hunt for now. In the meantime, I sold my Glock and purchased a Girsan 1911 hunter in 10mm with a 6” barrel and I’m getting it setup for the 2023 hunt right now. I DO carry from time to time the MC-14 .380 you reviewed, though my usual carry is a 1911 (unless my broken down hands object too much). Here's some more 10mm blurbs I've stumbled across:
    With almost all troops being exposed to .45ACP and/or 9mm Luger during service, people came back home from war swearing that their own familiar cartridge was the very best for handguns. It sparked a neverending international debate, and for most people, facts and speeches meant nothing next to their personal experiences and anecdotes.
    But people like Jeff Cooper and Whit Collins were not content with that. They thought if a .35 cal (aka 9mm) could carry more onboard and fly faster, and a .45 cal could be heavier and hit harder, then theoretically splitting the difference right up the middle--with a .40 cal--should produce the very best of all worlds.
    Cooper did a lot of research on ammo testing from throughout the 20th century. He found at least 20 different times when earlier wildcatters had reached the same conclusion.
    But personal tragedies kept ending their personal efforts, and new wars kept demanding a focus on the two established calibers over all else, and troops kept being indoctrinated, and the two-sided debate kept raging on.
    So Collins and Cooper said enough was enough, and they were going to put the hypothesis to the test and document their every step.
    Collins called his load shot from the Browning the .40G&A. He wrote for the Guns & Ammo magazine who was sponsoring him, so that made sense.
    But like you hinted at here, Cooper believed that greater performance could be attained by changing the design and focusing future testing on that beefier CZ platform. Cooper couldn't let it go. He and Collins split ways in the later '70s, and Cooper championed what he called the .40 Super.
    Then along came startup Dorner & Dixon, who shared Cooper's vision of a CZ75 clone pushing a hotter round. Thus was the Bren Ten conceived. D&D said there was enough potential to ramp Cooper's .40 Super up even further, and they coined the new label 10mm Auto.
    Norma was selected as the initial manufacturer for 10mm ammo, and they wowed everyone by quickly packing even more oomph into the cartridge.
    Sonny Crockett sported a Bren Ten in the popular Miami Vice TV show.
    And then the FBI selected 10mm as their caliber of the future in 1989.
    It's a shame that early gun manufacturers had such a hard time catching up to the ammo and figuring out how to reliably handle the loadings in a production semiautomatic pistol. But that must have been a helluva exciting time!

    I think the 10mm is a great choice for bear protection, but if you already have a steel frame 1911 in 45ACP and you handload theres no need to go out and get a 10mm pistol. Its surprising Cooper didnt go on to develop the 45 Super since he did alot of work with the 45ACP, but I guess alot of his loads (7.5gr of Unique) was pretty close to what would be considered 45 Super loads. Still the 45 Super handloaded is so close to the 10mm its a toss up in my opinion. According to Hodgdon's annual manual, loading a standard 45ACP with a 200gr SWC (68 style) using CFE Pistol takes it up to 1142 fps. I'd sday thats 45ACP +P territory but still not 45 Super. This is accurate to book load data as I've loaded it myself. So what would you get loading that up with 45 Super brass to 45 Super pressures? I'm going to guess it would match 10mm velocities, but then you get a larger diameter and can use bullets up to 260gr with the 45. In Grizzly bear country (where I live in Montana) I think the heavier bullet weight and larger diameter would trump a slightly faster velocity, but then we are in the old argument of a heavy and slower bullet, vs. a faster lighter bullet....which is adding another can of worms lol

      @leveractiongypsy1848 2 года назад

      @@russellweber3466 Well I can only speak for my own shooting and I dont have a 10mm, but the 45ACP+P load I shoot at 1150 fps (which I get to at 7.8gr of CFE Pistol not 8.2gr max they list) the accuracy is dead on. I bullseye my targets at 10yds which is my normal range for target practice. I'm guessing if I test further to max of 8.2gr of CFE Pistol (per Hodgdon annual manual load data) I'll likely get 1200-1250fps - which is what I get now with the same Saeco #68 210gr and CFE Pistol 7.8gr load through my Hipoint carbine (rated for 45ACP+P) due to the longer barrel...so my question to you 10mm shooters....what do you get for velocities when you load a 250-260gr hard cast bullet? I'm currently getting 950-1000fps with testing CFE Pistol, but I think Herco might do a little better just havent tested it yet. Basically 45 Super gets you old school Colt 45 velocities up to about a 265gr bullet - which is the heaviest I've tested so far, but like to keep it 250-255gr

    • @leveractiongypsy1848
      @leveractiongypsy1848 2 года назад +1

      @@russellweber3466 maybe a good test for you would be if you have a 1911 in 10mm, get or find someone with a 1911 45ACP. Set up both the same with spring weights, barrel bushings, shock buffs ect and then compare. Most people will tell you any 1911 in 45acp set up properly is an extremely accurate pistol - as it would be set up the same in 10mm. 45ACP to 45 Super is a matter of spring changes, a shock buff and 45 Super brass. I'd say its a moot point as they are so close - both are great! My point was while I think a 10mm is great, if you dont have one and NEED the power for bear protection and already have a steel frame 1911 in 45acp, no need to go out and buy a new pistol

I've been wanting to do some long range shooting with both carbines to see what rounds shoot flatter. Out of a Glock 20 and a 29 pitbull, 180 grain fmj loads, after 5 or 6 shoots into 3 telephone books duct taped together, the rounds would go thru the 3 telephone books. I have a Rock lsland tac II 10mm in 1911, and a friend of mine has a son who has a Rock Island 1911 9mm. I still think the Glocks are not as good looking. That said however, good looking won't keep me from getting killed & somehow I doubt if I died that people would look down at me & say "well at least it was a good looking pistol" lmao. I'm not a fanboy nor am I loyal to any one particular brand as I think that's stupid. There's to many nice options out there for that but the glock hate is just misplaced.

    The video covers development of ~.40" auto pistol cartridges - .41 Action Express and .40 G&A - but skips over THE 10mm Auto cartridge that actually went into mass production. The cartridge started with a clean sheet, designed by Mike Dixon of Dornaus & Dixon/Bren Ten fame. Cooper wanted ballistics of 200grs with an impact velocity of 1000fps, and the ultimate, magnum-level performance was a result of confusion, misunderstanding, and Norma, the original ammo maker, essentially saying enough is enough. The subject is covered in depth in the book Bren Ten/The Heir Apparent, which was written with input of Cooper, Dornaus, and Dixon. Dornaus and Cooper have passed since the book was written, so it will probably remain the definitive reference on the development of the Bren Ten pistol and the 10mm Auto cartridge.

      After touting the 10mm's ability to hit as hard at 75 yards as a .45 does at the muzzle, Cooper eventually conceded that nobody shoots defensively at 75 yards. The FBI determined that a round with .40 S&W ballistics passed all of their ammo tests - no coincidence - and that sort of killed the 10 as a replacement for .45 as a service cartridge.

    • @Icarryone

      Based on my experience, a .357 snubbie has fairly sharp recoil along with a fair dose of muzzle whip. The recoil impulse of a 10mm round fired in a 1911 platform handgun is noticeable - but a lot smoother.

      The .45acp cartridge casing was never designed for high intensity pressure! .45 Super cases - as well as 10mm, 460 Rolland and a few others - have a much heavier case head design. This makes them far more suitable to run at higher pressures. In other words, less prone to case head failures.
