  • In 1976, Cooper founded the American Pistol Institute (API) in Paulden, Arizona (later the Gunsite Training Center). Cooper began teaching shotgun and rifle classes to both law enforcement and military personnel, as well as civilians, and did on-site training for individuals and groups from around the world.
Shortly after his facility opened, Jeff Cooper took part in a news piece about the civilian side of his firearm training facility, one that garnered a lot of local and later national attention. Although such trainers such as John Farnam were traveling the country at the time teaching civilians at small private ranges and clubs as well, Cooper was the first to have such a dedicated facility of this magnitude that catered to non-law enforcement individuals.
As any serious martial artist can trace his teacher's lineage, I like many others can give credit and thanks to Jeff Cooper, regardless of how techniques have grown and changed. My own first formal training with handguns came by the way of Tom Givens, of Rangemaster in Memphis, TN. Tom was an early and heavily recurring student of Jeff Cooper, both in his law enforcement days and later as one who owns and still operates a private firearm training facility.
However countless many may be familiar with his four rules of firearms safety, however countless many may be familiar with the Combat Mindset as put forth by the Cooper Color codes in his work Principles of Personal Defense, very few ever had the opportunity to hear him speak before his passing in 2006.
I feel lucky to have the opportunity to share this video with you today, if for the very reason you get to hear it from the "horse's mouth."

I missed this program when it originally aired on network television. My best friend told me about it after the fact. We had often considered going to Gunsite, but as college students we could not justify the expense. I did write to Colonel Cooper once to ask a question about a comment he made in one of his gun columns. He was kind enough to reply in writing. I may still have his letter somewhere in my files. I never did go to Gunsite, which I regret. Just listening to him espouse his philosophy would have made the trip both interesting and worthwhile.

$300 per week... Clint Smith and John Farnam are charging over $300 per day now and selling out long in advance. Worth every penny then just like it is today!

The producers clearly wanted to portray Cooper and Gunsite students as oddballs, even nuts.

A day gone by. I miss my grandad and his wisdom out of the WW II generation. It would be great if men would take on character like this man.

Jeff Cooper was a true Godfather in the gun culture. Please look up John Ross's book Unintended Consequences if you are truly into firearms.

I've been in 2 hun fights (criminals breaking into my house )i remember the training of only thinking about the front sight and pulling the trigger -and nothing more or less -i don't remember the sounds even when the criminal shot at me it's very very scary situation it's happen in 3 to 5 seconds .

I was going to ask what a "hun fight" is, but then I realized it's a typo (or is it?). ;-)

The key is to practice practice practice until it becomes natural (muscle memory) that's why when police shooting they empty their guns on the criminals because the only thing they concentrate is pulling the trigger , the only thing that's important at the time is the front sight and pulling the trigger -the mind is trying to flee from danger and its go's into a tunnel vision from fear ,in the brain fear and anger work in the same way the trick is to get angry at the criminal trying to kill you do you consente on the front sight .

This is apparently from NBC's awful WEEKEND program, which ran in the 1970s. Its hosts, Lloyd Dobbins and Linda Ellerbee, were smartass know-it-alls who made sarcastic fun of everything they covered.
