    Out in the middle of darkest Saskatchewan and inherited some alpacas needing haircuts. Got some kit but still just me and the wife to do the job, thank goodness for youtube and your video. I wish i could do this cleanly in 4 mins but we did get it done cleanly enough in 45 mins, beginners beware, and we will be better off next time now we know the score, couldn’t have done it without your video, so thank you very much.

    This is the best I've seen of alpaca shearing. Everything is well planned out to keep the animal as relaxed as possible and to help the shearing go smooth and fast. The wool collection is immediate and clean. Well done, everybody, and happy alpaca.

    Is all the fleece used or just the fleece from the body? This looks a kinder way of shearing, no alpacas struggling or kicking.

    • @adam_riley
      @adam_riley  2 года назад +3

      All the fleece can be used for various items. The best fleece is the stuff that comes off first, and that is usually what is spun into yarn. The lesser quality fleece can be spun into rug yarn or made into sheets of felt that you could then use for slippers or hats. Lots of options!

    I didn't see you oil the shears during the shearing. Are you shears specially made so you don't have to oil every 4-5 passes?

    • @adam_riley
      @adam_riley  Год назад

      If your blades are sharp and you have the machine set at proper tension you don’t need to oil them. I put a drop or two in (not on the blades) every 1-2 animals.

    Is it easy to cut into their skin or "nip" into the nipples with the clipper? I am a pet groomer and we have to be super careful around the nipples.

    • @adam_riley
      @adam_riley  2 года назад +2

      No the nipples are not a "danger zone". Sometimes the older and thinner animals will have big wrinkles across their belly and that is the most likely time to cut them, but an amateur shearer could cut them at any point. As you know from grooming, it's not as easy as it looks!

    • @adam_riley
      @adam_riley  2 года назад +6

      Shearing happens in the spring so usually the weather is warm enough that cold is not an issue. If there's a cold snap, the farmer will normally bring their alpaxas into the barn in the evenings.
