Around 94K my '08 IS 250 started to make a horrible grinding noise. Poked around the engine bay with a flashlight and an inspection mirror and saw a huge cluster of pink junk under the water pump. I bought new water pump, belt, loctite, anti-seize, and a jug of toyota antifreeze off of amazon for under $100. Watched your video and had it done in about 4-5 hours! Hardest part was getting those wiring connectors off! Thanks!

Came to find out it was my water pump once coolant leaked out. The water pump pulley broke. I'm an electrician and i never put hands into my cars, but mechanic shops were charging me a crazy amount to fix my is250 so I decided to fix it myself(after watching your video). I spend nearly $200 (water pump $126 with lifetime warranty, 2 lexus coolants $42, and the anti-siezed lubricant $7). I worked on it myself and it only took me 4hrs; not bad for someone that dont know much about cars. Just follow the video and pay attention to every detail.
This is ONE OF THE BEST “HOW TO” videos on RUclips! Straight to the point, clear, comprehensive, and east to follow. Lexus quoted me $850 to replace my water pump on 2015 is350. With this video $90 on Amazon for pump and $60 for some specialty wrench sets at Harbor Freight I successfully did it myself in 4-5hrs. Much appreciated.

But the shop just had a complete check of the car and determined the water pump, some hoses and v-belt need replacing. The quote is $2.5 k. I agree 1000% I'm here because my wife called me from the dealership this morning and told me they wanted to charger her $1000 for a leaky water pump and that it would take 4 hours. yep, it is mind-blowing how much the "stealership" will charge to do a job that can be mostly done by a handy DIY'er. Just takes time and a bit of effort and organizational skills to do this job.
Intelligent, straightforward and complete but appropriately concise instruction, with useful commentary. I watched this once then with the necessary tools and parts at the ready, I replaced my water pump in 38 minutes. It took almost that long to refill the radiator, check for leaks, (there were none), clean up, and put away my tools and every thing I used. Just like being back in High School Auto Mechanics class but with a better view and without all of repeat student questions and horsing around. I also replaced the S belt and the thermostat. I bought my parts from 3 different auto parts suppliers on eBay and the coolant from a local superstore for a total cost of $116.00 ! The quote from the dealer was $798.00

EVERYONE PLEASE NOTE: if you know your water pump is going bad, replace it ASAP. I had the part ordered and delayed replacing it for a week and it suddenly broke down when going to work and coolant started leaking everywhere. I had to get the car towed. Not worth it. I didn't sound like anything. It was just seeping on mine and a crusty buildup of dried coolant was all around the water pump area. If the pump catastrophically fails you'd hear it... it would screech, grind and be puking coolant everywhere.
I followed every step exactly as you showed and it took me an hour and a half. The job was successful and works great! Thank you again for taking the time to record and post this. My Lexus is a 07 IS250 and the pump started leaking at 70,000 miles, what a joke Toyota!
+Bryan Coffelt you're welcome Bryan. Thanks for watching. Yes certain Toyota's seem to have their water pumps fail prematurely although I'll admit the failure rates are still FAR less than any German or domestic vehicle.
Thanks for putting this together! Local dealer quoted $1300+. Does take some mechanical skills and patience. One thing I will admit I messed up was when putting the tensioner pulley back on, I placed the washer on backwards and tightened it down! I should've checked it was spinning before I put on the belt! Nipples on the washers need to face out, nipples out! Smoke show with the belt not being able to spin on the pulley, but caught it quick!
I also want to say this is the wonderful video. so detaily processed and good edited. I dont need to replace water pump now but it is still good to understand the process for front poly parts and etc.
I delayed replacing my water pump for about 3 months. Turns out it failed in two ways. The bearings failed and it was leaking slowly. It made the tell tale "whirring" noise. Then, the belt started squealing because the pulley wasn't turning freely. Your video saved me from skipping crucial steps in the repair and saved me tons of $$$!! Viewers, please note, you must purchase Toyota coolant (pink). And TOP OFF THE COOLANT when done!! The thermostat won't work properly unless you fill it to the very top at the cap (not the reservoir) or else your car WILL overheat. Also, you can use an old screw driver to hold the water pump pulley. I didn't have a pulley tool. :/ Do not wait as long as I did. I got lucky. Others commenting were not so lucky. Good luck!

Yep it is crazy what the stealership will charge to change this out. The crazy this is that it wasn't even all that difficult to do so long as you have the right tools and pay attention to how things are to come apart.

Awesome diy, step by step and technical. I just did alternator/ thermostat/ water pump/ belt on my 250 since alternator finally died and I had rest of the stuff, but never got around to it. Everything original on mine 07 197k miles lol. Don’t buy autozone remanufactured alternators, first one I installed was a dud. Had to do the job twice 🤦🏽♂️ second one I made them bench test.
Glad you liked the video! Yes the auto zone alternators are CRAP! While I am up in Canada that I have heard of plenty of auto zone duralast alternators not lasting long at all! Lifetime warranty doesn't mean much if you're changing them out every month.
+Rich K The vehicle I worked on was an AWD model however, I believe the IS 250 only came in either FWD or AWD and the IS 350 series came in a AWD or RWD version. If you can clarify that would be appreciated!

Of course having the right tools also helps but even if I had those I know I would f it up...Sad but true. I love my car I have a leak in the air conditioning condenser but I got sidetracked looking at this. Not looking forward to the cost to fix it specially now.
Glad you liked my video! Ah yes the all annoying condenser leak. I've done a few of those. They're surprisingly easy to replace (all things considered). I wish I documented how to replace one b/c I did do a comprehensive fix on my Honda years ago where I replaced the ENTIRE a/c system and recharged it. FFWD years later it still throws ice cubes when its turned on.

+manuel meza it is really easy to do if you TAKE YOUR TIME. Just don't overtorque the bolts and use common sense when tightening things down. Grinding noise? Yikes. You definitely will need to get that fixed asap before you experience complete pump failure and puke coolant everywhere. Good luck and let us know how it all went for you :)
+piercedasian everything went great thanks to your video the only issue I have is that there is no hot air coming out when I turn the heater on there is no hot air any idea what it might be?
not hot air? you likely have air in your cooling system. Park your car on an incline with the car front pointing up and then when the engine has cooled open up the rad cap and continue to fill the cooling system. DO NOT drive the car until you have heat otherwise you'll be running low on coolant which can damage your head gasket.
Just got done with spark plugs change on my 2009 IS250 AWD. The water pump is next. Waiting for my order from Amazon. I will definitely be watching your video as I do them. So thank you in advanced for the video tutorial. You just save me $800. With spark plugs, serpentine belt, and this water pump. You and other RUclipsrs + Amazon parts just save me easily over $1000. Two question. 1. How many gallons of Toyota lifelong coolant fluid did you use? 2. Would you recommend replacing the thermostat as well?

Hi im just having to do this now on my 2008 is as its starting to overheat after about 30 mins of running. I dont think its head gasket - no mixing in oil, no condensation, no miss motor runs smooth as silk, Im going to replace water pump, thermostat & radiator - i shudder at what a dealer might charge. It appears a relatively straight forward job Those 2 o rings werent supplied in the gates water pump kit I was wondering - is there no need to use a gasket sealant on the water pump Thanks for the instructional video - it was very good
hmm, if its starting to overheat then odds are the t-stat is stuck in the closed position. No sealant needed on the water pump mating surface. Just snug the water pump bolts down evenly (and not crazy tight as the bolts are super tiny) and make sure you get some replacement orings from Lexus.

I have the Thermostat which is genuine oem & will do that first then with gaskets (after flushing the cooling system) im not a professional mechanic but feel sure after watching youre video id be able to replace the WP if needed Pity i cant send you a pic of the car its an 08 paint 212 (Obsidian) with ivory leather 179,000 kms.-it needs a lots of polishing & detailing which im looking forward to doing. Interesting build - its a prestige auto but optioned with Mark Levinson, sat nav & no sunroof. Ive been able to piece together from the service books & the few receipts that its had an oil change at least once a year since leaving the care of Lexus Thanks again apologies for the small novel. I find that hard to believe when you consider the water pump is fixed behind pulleys and belts where "gashing" it with some sort of tool would be difficult if not impossible to do. Yep, doing the water pump is cheap and easy :) If the thermostat isn't broken I personally wouldn't bother. Why waste money on parts that are perfectly fine still? I've only ever seen japanese vehicle thermostats fails maybe 5 times in the 1000's of cars I've worked on.
Hey hoping your still around. I’m replaying the water pump currently and i’ve gotten everything off except the water pump pulley bolts are on extremely tight. when i try removing either the drive belt on it rotates all the pulleys backwards it doesn’t break the bolts. You mentioned that toyota sells a special tool that hold the water pump pulley do you happen to know that tool name? and also because the pulleys rotates counter clockwise will that mess up the timing? thank you

How many gallons coolant did you had to add back give or take,once you’ve replaced the pump. Update;just replaced the waterpump.i messed up with one bolt dured the torque process,and the bolthead snapped off(upperleft bolt C,3th one from the left).had no time left and had to reassemble the rest.i HOPE its not going to leak.drove for a while,saw no leaks so far.lets hope that this is yet again,an over engineered part from toyota🤞🏽
I can't recall how much coolant I needed but I believe it was roughly 1 jug. Crappy to hear you snapped the bolt. Were you using a torque wrench on the bolt? Many times people give me hell for not using a torque wrench but it is precisely for reasons like yours that a torque wrench doesn't really apply (reliably at least). Hopefully yours was a fluke and that it doesn't cause you issues. Ideally you'd want to remove that broken stud and put a new bolt in b/c heaven forbid if you get a failure while driving.

Kind of like I have done with push rods before in cardboard box to remember where they go. I have a 2006 IS350. This is the first video that I watched of yours, but I will watch them all! Are you a mechanic by trade, or just a DIY guy like me?
I am a DIY guy but I probably could pass off for a professional mechanic. I certainly won't cut corners in a bad way like many folks do which of course = shoddy work. It is all about the quality of work being done that is important for me.
My 2006 IS350 has 138,000 miles, and just last week had a reseal job done on it for the common Toyota V6 timing cover leak. It's a lot easier to just pull the engine, so that was done, and while they were at it I had them to install a new Toyota water pump because it did have just a tad of bearing play. Just cost me extra for the part since the pump had to come off any way. Hopefully, I won't have to worry about a water pump for years to come. I was going to trade it for a new Toyota Camry, but my Lexus cabin is a lot quieter inside. Seats were awful compared to my Lexus too, so I saved up the money to do the reseal job.
yeah if I had to choose between the IS and the Camry, I'd choose the IS hands down. That was good that the stealership didn't charge you extra labor for the pump - some dealerships would. May you have many more miles on your car before you have to trade it in :)
What's the average cost to have the water pump replaced at a repair shop? I have a 2007 IS250 and the Lexus dealership wants $1200 to replace the water pump. Your tutorial has enough information to help me change the water pump myself but unfortunately I'm extremely busy at work and I don't have time. Great video. Thanks.
+Texas Cowboy The cost at Lexus was $960 Canadian. Total rip off when this was replaced for less than $170 including new coolant and a brand new toyota water pump from the dealership. Glad you found my vid useful. Thanks for watching!
I wish I could but the problem is I can only do videos of the car as they come in and since it is such a reliable car that it will be a long time from now before it comes back for service.
I wouldn't replace the t-stat unless it wasn't working right. I've had plenty of t-stats last more than 500, 000kms with ZERO issues. I find modern tstats to be super reliable compared to those made in the 1970's and 1980's. I JUST replaced my 1990 Honda's t-stat last summer which says a lot... 29 years before needing replacement is nothing short of impressive.
Awesome video I was able to replace my water pump on my '08. Bad thing was that after I put everything back together and I went to add the coolant the cap broke and everything fell inside the water intake. Now I have to hopefully fish everything out or buy a new intake *sighs*
+piercedasian Yes the red cap neck. Luckily I was able to locate it at the water intake. I flushed the system and re-installed. Thanks again for the awesome video.
Toyota long life coolant. you can use the toyota red or the toyota pink although the toyota pink supposedly lasts longer but it is only available in a premixed version vs. the toyota red which is a concentrate and you can mix the coolant concentrations to your liking.

I need to have the water pump replace. Over heating problems. This wonderful machine traveled from Florida to Maryland. What's the rate for replacing the pump,will buy the parts. in Maryland area, namely, Prince Georges County/Downtown Silver Spring?
I'm not from the USA so I can't comment on what the costs are to replace the water pump. What I do know is that Lexus Canada to do this same exact job wanted $1000 so if you went to an independent chances are they'd want $700-800 to do the same job using genuine Toyota parts.
To make things a whole lot easier, I'll remove all of those coolant hoses and set them aside and then do the water pump. I would photograph the hoses before removing them. That's just me but everyone has their own way of doing it, I'm not bashing at what you're doing but it's easier if the hoses are out of the way.
You could do it that way but I try to remove as little as possible because removing hoses CAN introduce leaks down the road because the hoses are aged and they’re not as pliable. I have experienced this a few times but typically on older cars. Each to their own.

Thanks for the video. I will throw all those terrible spring clamps in the garage and use hose clamps with 8mm heads and liquid aviation gasket maker. You didn't you replace the thermostat? It's so easy to access
Glad you liked it. I don't believe in replacing easy to access parts if there is no need for it. Toyota and Honda t-stats are surprisingly reliable so proactively changing them out when they're working ok. Ironically the FIRST honda t-stat that failed on me was 200, 000 kms BUT it was also 32 years old and was on my classic CRX that is almost never driven. Each to their own but for my own cars and even people's cars that I fix that they would rather not spend more money than really necessary.
My water pump pulley when I try taking it off, the whole assembly is moving the belt and the other pulleys which is making it hard to just snap off as you did anything I can do ?
it shouldn't. If it is noisy then you may need to look into an exhaust leak OR possibly a valve lash adjustment (not something I can show you how to do because I've never done it before on a Lexus).
Hi, sorry to hear that your car is overheating. Get under the car and see where that coolant is coming from and focus on the area where the water pump is. If it is leaking you will see coolant or coolant residue all over the place. If there is signs of leakage get that fixed asap.
does the hose going to the right from the radiator overflow tank is it suppose to be connected to anything? my cars was disconnected and dont seem to find where to connect it to
To take off the water pump pulley easier, is us a long flat head screw driver and use it as leverage between two bolts. While you loosen the opposite bolt.
Question... did you replace the thermostat as well? I’m getting ready to perform this repair but my vehicle is not overheating. I’m only doing the repair because I can hear a slight grinding noise. But the thermostat is a $65.00 😅 extra
nope no need to replacement thermostat. They rarely fail and my last 3 cars had over 300,000 MILES on the original thermostat. Just change the water pump and coolant and you should be good.
Does this video more or less apply to the 3.5L engine as well? I got a IS350 and the stupid whining noise started to come for my engine. thought it was a tensioner pulley but turns out it's my water pump. Just bought a new water pump off Amazon. Will this guide work for my 350??!🙏
do you know how many qts or gallons exactly you needed to top off with coolant? I have 1 gal jug of the 50/50 and also a jug of the concentrated but i dont want to mix them, hoping that the 1gal jug would be enough.
My response is late but I believe 1 gallon of premix ought to be plenty because if you don't drain the radiator that you're only losing cooling in the very top portion of the engine/cylinder heads.

Intelligent, straightforward and complete but appropriately concise instruction, with useful commentary. I watched this once then with the necessary tools and parts at the ready, I replaced my water pump in 38 minutes. It took almost that long to refill the radiator, check for leaks, (there were none), clean up, and put away my tools and every thing I used. Just like being back in High School Auto Mechanics class but with a better view and without all of repeat student questions and horsing around. I also replaced the S belt and the thermostat. I bought my parts from 3 different auto parts suppliers on eBay and the coolant from a local superstore for a total cost of $116.00 ! The quote from the dealer was $798.00

if you know your water pump is going bad, replace it ASAP. I had the part ordered and delayed replacing it for a week and it suddenly broke down when going to work and coolant started leaking everywhere. I had to get the car towed. Not worth it.

Question. Did it sound like metal or what did it sound like when it went out
I didn't sound like anything. It was just seeping on mine and a crusty buildup of dried coolant was all around the water pump area. If the pump catastrophically fails you'd hear it... it would screech, grind and be puking coolant everywhere.
I followed every step exactly as you showed and it took me an hour and a half. The job was successful and works great! Thank you again for taking the time to record and post this. My Lexus is a 07 IS250 and the pump started leaking at 70,000 miles, what a joke Toyota!

Thanks for putting this together! Local dealer quoted $1300+. Does take some mechanical skills and patience. One thing I will admit I messed up was when putting the tensioner pulley back on, I placed the washer on backwards and tightened it down! I should've checked it was spinning before I put on the belt! Nipples on the washers need to face out, nipples out! Smoke show with the belt not being able to spin on the pulley, but caught it quick!

I delayed replacing my water pump for about 3 months. Turns out it failed in two ways. The bearings failed and it was leaking slowly. It made the tell tale "whirring" noise. Then, the belt started squealing because the pulley wasn't turning freely. Your video saved me from skipping crucial steps in the repair and saved me tons of $$$!! Viewers, please note, you must purchase Toyota coolant (pink). And TOP OFF THE COOLANT when done!! The thermostat won't work properly unless you fill it to the very top at the cap (not the reservoir) or else your car WILL overheat. Also, you can use an old screw driver to hold the water pump pulley. I didn't have a pulley tool. :/ Do not wait as long as I did. I got lucky. Others commenting were not so lucky. Good luck!

Yep it is crazy what the stealership will charge to change this out. The crazy this is that it wasn't even all that difficult to do so long as you have the right tools and pay attention to how things are to come apart.

Awesome diy, step by step and technical. I just did alternator/ thermostat/ water pump/ belt on my 250 since alternator finally died and I had rest of the stuff, but never got around to it. Everything original on mine 07 197k miles lol. Don’t buy autozone remanufactured alternators, first one I installed was a dud. Had to do the job twice 🤦🏽♂️ second one I made them bench test.
Glad you liked the video! Yes the auto zone alternators are CRAP! While I am up in Canada that I have heard of plenty of auto zone duralast alternators not lasting long at all! Lifetime warranty doesn't mean much if you're changing them out every month.

+Rich K The vehicle I worked on was an AWD model however, I believe the IS 250 only came in either FWD or AWD and the IS 350 series came in a AWD or RWD version. If you can clarify that would be appreciated!

Of course having the right tools also helps but even if I had those I know I would f it up...Sad but true. I love my car I have a leak in the air conditioning condenser but I got sidetracked looking at this. Not looking forward to the cost to fix it specially now.
Glad you liked my video! Ah yes the all annoying condenser leak. I've done a few of those. They're surprisingly easy to replace (all things considered). I wish I documented how to replace one b/c I did do a comprehensive fix on my Honda years ago where I replaced the ENTIRE a/c system and recharged it. FFWD years later it still throws ice cubes when its turned on.

+manuel meza it is really easy to do if you TAKE YOUR TIME. Just don't overtorque the bolts and use common sense when tightening things down. Grinding noise? Yikes. You definitely will need to get that fixed asap before you experience complete pump failure and puke coolant everywhere. Good luck and let us know how it all went for you :)

yep, hand tight is al lthat's needed along with some threadlocker on certain bolts.
+piercedasian everything went great thanks to your video the only issue I have is that there is no hot air coming out when I turn the heater on there is no hot air any idea what it might be?
not hot air? you likely have air in your cooling system. Park your car on an incline with the car front pointing up and then when the engine has cooled open up the rad cap and continue to fill the cooling system. DO NOT drive the car until you have heat otherwise you'll be running low on coolant which can damage your head gasket.
Just got done with spark plugs change on my 2009 IS250 AWD. The water pump is next. Waiting for my order from Amazon. I will definitely be watching your video as I do them. So thank you in advanced for the video tutorial. You just save me $800. With spark plugs, serpentine belt, and this water pump. You and other RUclipsrs + Amazon parts just save me easily over $1000.
Two question.
1. How many gallons of Toyota lifelong coolant fluid did you use?
2. Would you recommend replacing the thermostat as well?
If I remember correctly I used 1.5 gallons of Toyota premixed coolant. No need to change thermostat. Only replace when they fail which is VERY rare.

Hi im just having to do this now on my 2008 is as its starting to overheat after about 30 mins of running. I dont think its head gasket - no mixing in oil, no condensation, no miss motor runs smooth as silk,
Im going to replace water pump, thermostat & radiator - i shudder at what a dealer might charge. It appears a relatively straight forward job

hmm, if its starting to overheat then odds are the t-stat is stuck in the closed position. No sealant needed on the water pump mating surface. Just snug the water pump bolts down evenly (and not crazy tight as the bolts are super tiny) and make sure you get some replacement orings from Lexus.
@@piercedasian Just want to say a "BIG BIG" Thankyou for response. I have the Thermostat which is genuine oem & will do that first then with gaskets (after flushing the cooling system)

I find that hard to believe when you consider the water pump is fixed behind pulleys and belts where "gashing" it with some sort of tool would be difficult if not impossible to do. Yep, doing the water pump is cheap and easy :) If the thermostat isn't broken I personally wouldn't bother. Why waste money on parts that are perfectly fine still? I've only ever seen japanese vehicle thermostats fails maybe 5 times in the 1000's of cars I've worked on.
Hey hoping your still around. I’m replaying the water pump currently and i’ve gotten everything off except the water pump pulley bolts are on extremely tight. when i try removing either the drive belt on it rotates all the pulleys backwards it doesn’t break the bolts. You mentioned that toyota sells a special tool that hold the water pump pulley do you happen to know that tool name? and also because the pulleys rotates counter clockwise will that mess up the timing? thank you

nope not at all. No timing belt on this engine but a timing chain anyways so you need not worry.
How many gallons coolant did you had to add back give or take,once you’ve replaced the pump.
Update;just replaced the waterpump.i messed up with one bolt dured the torque process,and the bolthead snapped off(upperleft bolt C,3th one from the left).had no time left and had to reassemble the rest.i HOPE its not going to leak.drove for a while,saw no leaks so far.lets hope that this is yet again,an over engineered part from toyota🤞🏽
I can't recall how much coolant I needed but I believe it was roughly 1 jug. Crappy to hear you snapped the bolt. Were you using a torque wrench on the bolt? Many times people give me hell for not using a torque wrench but it is precisely for reasons like yours that a torque wrench doesn't really apply (reliably at least). Hopefully yours was a fluke and that it doesn't cause you issues. Ideally you'd want to remove that broken stud and put a new bolt in b/c heaven forbid if you get a failure while driving.

Are you a mechanic by trade, or just a DIY guy like me?
I am a DIY guy but I probably could pass off for a professional mechanic. I certainly won't cut corners in a bad way like many folks do which of course = shoddy work. It is all about the quality of work being done that is important for me.
My 2006 IS350 has 138,000 miles, and just last week had a reseal job done on it for the common Toyota V6 timing cover leak. It's a lot easier to just pull the engine, so that was done, and while they were at it I had them to install a new Toyota water pump because it did have just a tad of bearing play. Just cost me extra for the part since the pump had to come off any way. Hopefully, I won't have to worry about a water pump for years to come.
I was going to trade it for a new Toyota Camry, but my Lexus cabin is a lot quieter inside. Seats were awful compared to my Lexus too, so I saved up the money to do the reseal job.
yeah if I had to choose between the IS and the Camry, I'd choose the IS hands down. That was good that the stealership didn't charge you extra labor for the pump - some dealerships would. May you have many more miles on your car before you have to trade it in :)
What's the average cost to have the water pump replaced at a repair shop? I have a 2007 IS250 and the Lexus dealership wants $1200 to replace the water pump. Your tutorial has enough information to help me change the water pump myself but unfortunately I'm extremely busy at work and I don't have time. Great video. Thanks.

I wouldn't replace the t-stat unless it wasn't working right. I've had plenty of t-stats last more than 500, 000kms with ZERO issues. I find modern tstats to be super reliable compared to those made in the 1970's and 1980's. I JUST replaced my 1990 Honda's t-stat last summer which says a lot... 29 years before needing replacement is nothing short of impressive.

Awesome video I was able to replace my water pump on my '08. Bad thing was that after I put everything back together and I went to add the coolant the cap broke and everything fell inside the water intake. Now I have to hopefully fish everything out or buy a new intake *sighs*
that's terrible! The cap as in the rad cap neck? That blows. Well at least you know how to take everything apart.

Toyota long life coolant. you can use the toyota red or the toyota pink although the toyota pink supposedly lasts longer but it is only available in a premixed version vs. the toyota red which is a concentrate and you can mix the coolant concentrations to your liking.

Yes you absolutely MUST replace the gasket otherwise you're gonna be leaking coolant.

I need to have the water pump replace. Over heating problems. This wonderful machine traveled from Florida to Maryland. What's the rate for replacing the pump,will buy the parts. in Maryland area, namely, Prince Georges County/Downtown Silver Spring?
I'm not from the USA so I can't comment on what the costs are to replace the water pump. What I do know is that Lexus Canada to do this same exact job wanted $1000 so if you went to an independent chances are they'd want $700-800 to do the same job using genuine Toyota parts.
To make things a whole lot easier, I'll remove all of those coolant hoses and set them aside and then do the water pump. I would photograph the hoses before removing them. That's just me but everyone has their own way of doing it, I'm not bashing at what you're doing but it's easier if the hoses are out of the way.
You could do it that way but I try to remove as little as possible because removing hoses CAN introduce leaks down the road because the hoses are aged and they’re not as pliable. I have experienced this a few times but typically on older cars. Each to their own.

Glad you liked it. I don't believe in replacing easy to access parts if there is no need for it. Toyota and Honda t-stats are surprisingly reliable so proactively changing them out when they're working ok. Ironically the FIRST honda t-stat that failed on me was 200, 000 kms BUT it was also 32 years old and was on my classic CRX that is almost never driven.
Each to their own but for my own cars and even people's cars that I fix that they would rather not spend more money than really necessary.
My water pump pulley when I try taking it off, the whole assembly is moving the belt and the other pulleys which is making it hard to just snap off as you did anything I can do ?
Can you use a belt wrench to hold things in place?

it shouldn't. If it is noisy then you may need to look into an exhaust leak OR possibly a valve lash adjustment (not something I can show you how to do because I've never done it before on a Lexus).

Hi, sorry to hear that your car is overheating. Get under the car and see where that coolant is coming from and focus on the area where the water pump is. If it is leaking you will see coolant or coolant residue all over the place. If there is signs of leakage get that fixed asap.

To take off the water pump pulley easier, is us a long flat head screw driver and use it as leverage between two bolts. While you loosen the opposite bolt.

nope no need to replacement thermostat. They rarely fail and my last 3 cars had over 300,000 MILES on the original thermostat. Just change the water pump and coolant and you should be good.

do you know how many qts or gallons exactly you needed to top off with coolant? I have 1 gal jug of the 50/50 and also a jug of the concentrated but i dont want to mix them, hoping that the 1gal jug would be enough.
My response is late but I believe 1 gallon of premix ought to be plenty because if you don't drain the radiator that you're only losing cooling in the very top portion of the engine/cylinder heads.

Thank you for making this. My gasket was stuck on. Had to scrape it off piece by piece using wd40 and a blade. Was the worst part of this job and took 3 hours.
