Woodturning Segmented Platter - Tips, Tricks, and Bloopers

For this project, I am pushing my limits. After my move from Oregon to Utah, I had several projects crack from the change in humidity. These were generally flatter projects with long butt joints. I resolved to turn a platter that would not crack.
One issue is the outer rim when segments extend out often with limited support and on this platter - no support. The butt joints between segments are very sensitive to changes in humidity and risk cracks. To resolve this, the outer ring is a lamentation of two rings with the joints offset. This plan supports the butt joints with stronger side grain joints.
In addition, since the project is flat, rings cannot bricklay on top of each other. Instead, I cut matching bevels on each pair of rings. The bevel gives a lot of forgiveness in matching the joints and extends the glue line a little bit.
The platter contains 48 segments in walnut and hickory. In addition, the center is 3 plys of maple cross-banded to constrain grain movement. The platter is about 10 inches in diameter and finished with walnut oil.
    Enjoy!

Great video, Alan. Love your turning content, but please please please ditch the repeating award-show background music.

Noted! that is one area I would like to ditch. The background I would like to use that is in public domains and performed with permission somehow violates the RUclips somehow. I hope you care more for the content than the music.

Looks like you have everything covered, just need more practice using the jigs and stuff. Any particular reason not to use hot melt glue? It can also be removed, softened, with DNA to separate pieces. Thanks for sharing.

I will check the hot melt with DNA. My only other problem is heatup time.

Very nice piece, Alan! Thanks for showing the challenges. It gives us less experienced turners encouragement to expand our skills. Thanks!

Excellent video... but you sure lost me about 2 minutes into the process. I don't turn, just watch, so it's all ok. It was fascinating cuz there were several new things i was watching Alan. Thank you for sharing your creativity with me. Stay safe, Vickie

I have done a lot of segmented bowls but I have never done a platter. It took me two viewings to get my mind around your process but it finally sunk in. I am a slow learner. ;-) I use double stick tape often and don't generally have any problems with it. But you have to use "turners tape". It's the type with the cloth backing. My only problem with the tape is it sticks too well and I sometimes have trouble getting it to release. Excellent tip about doubling up the rim. I thoroughly agree with you about the use of the longworth chuck. Please continue sharing the mistakes. We all make mistakes and it helps when someone shows us how to avoid / correct them. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay healthy.

Generally, I like the tape I am using. It is good tape than I can tear. I don't like the similar cloth tape because I like to tear it to size.
Maybe I just need to use more.

Hi Allen. Nice project. I’ve used carpet tape instead of standard double sided. Sticks MUCH stronger!

Great tip! I'll have to dry it. My preconception is that it is thinner than what I am using. We'll see.

Great piece Alan. Could you also layer rings of different diameters and glue so you have butt and flat gluing. Please leave challenges in as this really helps everyone learn.
Love watching you turn and listening to your explanations.

Theoretically that sounds great except for the gluing and fitting sequence may be a challenge.

Another most interesting video of a creative engineered project. I can't offer any wood turning ideas because all of my turning in the past was with tool steels. When we finally settle down I hope to put a lot of your teaching to good use. Thanks for all of your efforts to teach the fine art of turning.

@@AsWoodTurns You stated that you are still working on the angle jig. What improvements have you added ? I am in the middle of a similar project. I will need to make a similar jig. Did you consider making the gap between the guides exactly the width of your scraper ? Any help would be appreciated. All the very best.
