Very nice presentation! The directions and narration while cutting were easy to follow - I’m sure I’ll watch this several more times. Here in northern CA and on my 10 acre property we have LOTs of oak.

Hey Mike, just finished your class in Provo, Utah. This video is a perfect recap of your class on making a platter! I noticed that the date on the platter was 2017. Keep digging in those archives! Looking forward to more of the same, and hope our paths will cross again!

Thanks for this detailed video of a beautiful platter. I learned a lot from you. I think that more than just larger pores vs. smaller, the white oaks have tyloses that actually block the cell tubes, while the red oaks don’t. For this reason, white oaks were always used for barrels that would store liquids, while red oaks were made by coopers for dry goods.

Thanks Mike, this is a great video. How do you avoid "self feeding" and grabbing when using a round nose scraper inside like that? Ive ruined a few bowls by trying to scrape like that and have given up on it.

Enjoyed the video Mike! I've got a fallen oak about that same size, possibly even larger that I've gotta get milled up into blanks. Wish I could share a photo, it's a huge tree.

Hi Mike - I am brand new at wood tuning and noticed you are LEFT handed - is that correct? I am LEFT handed and I am having a little trouble when it comes to gouging out the center part on a bowl (for instance) like you am a learning to do certain jobs Right handed which helps. Is the answer for a LEFT handed person, to learn to do some jobs Right handed. Many thanks in advance - Do you know of any other LEFT handed woodturners who have RUclips videos? Phil

Beautiful bowl and wood. I wish i could get my 5/8" bowl gouge to cut like that, i find it cumbersome and very difficult to get a decent cut.
