Everything GREAT About: Gurren Lagann: *ALL*
Agreed

Row row fight the powah!
He NEEDS TO SEE THE MOVIE
(Both)
Ep 8 was truly one of the saddest moments in the entire series, but at the same time, one of the most epic moments
Sad Moment: Kamina Dies
Epic Moment: Kamina Avenges his own death
I still tear up man . . .
@@PsychoDiesel48 Same here man, same here
I thought he would come back later like any other anime, but only at episode 20 I thought he was truly gone
I was in fucking tears in tgat moment
one of the saddest moments in all of fiction for me definitly
So apparently Gurren Lagann was supposed to have a rotating team of animators and artists for every 3 episodes, but on episode 4 they recieved such public backlash, they went back to the original team for the remaining episodes
yeah, also, after that one of the founders of the company quit anime forever
I Mean, Considering How BAD Episode 4 Looked, It Was A Good Call On Their Part To Do That
@@BardockSkywalker well actually it didn't look that bad. The fact is that (sorry if I don't remember all the names) the lead animator on that was this guy, who does a particular style of "limited animation" director Hiroyuki Imaishi likes really a lot. He's a guy who is quite infamous, sometimes with good reason (like "that" episode from 2019's Dororo) but many times he does a peculiar but not bad at all work (of course, based on the personal tastes, can be liked or not). For example, the style in Gurren Lagann episode 4 is weird to say the least, more angular and stiff, but animation wise isn't bad at all. If you want to see a anime where he really failed big time, as I said, Dororo is the thing to look for
@Kvothe Windrunner I don't need it, I watched multiple times, including few months ago. And while it's a style I myself don't like very much, it's far from horrible per se or compared to the rest of the series :) That said, it's not an artistic choice I, put in the same position, would have made. But after all, 1) it's just a choice of the makers 2) it doesn't harm the overall quality of the show in any way 3) the animation is actually good, and as for the more stylized angular simple drawing style, trust me I've seen muuuuuuch worse
@Kvothe Windrunner well that's fair, it's subjective. In my scale, there are really lots of anime moments or whole series that are waaay cringier (oh but of course you aren't forced to follow my scale), that's why I was a bit doubtful xD (like, for example, maybe I mentioned it somewhere here, a episode of 2019 Dororo -show I liked a lot- incidentally made by the same animator, where he reaaaally failed hard, there were some cuts and scenes that were really inexcusable)
One of the best little details of the final Combination with Kamina is that when it shows the digital reading of the drill penetrating Kamina's cockpit, the human symbol representing his life signs was still blacked out.
Even as he fought his last battle, Kamina was still dead, moving his own corpse through sheer force of will to protect his little bro and friends.
Very much a Buciaratti-level feat. And without a lifeforce infusion to achieve it.
Lastly, it's See-mone, and Vee-ral. And there is no mangaka for this anime. It's a totally original anime with no manga source.
Search it up, it does have a manga
And I'm pretty sure that all anime has a manga for it, except for maybe a few exceptions
@@netryusai6828 It does, yes, but that manga was made AFTER the anime. It was not an original product that the anime was adapted from, but the other way around.
Also, there are plenty of anime and manga that were made from Light Novels first. My major point of contention on this is which came first. And Gurren Lagann is a case of the anime being the original product, not the manga.
@@netryusai6828 There are a lot more than most people realize, and very often they're among people's top favorite lists.
Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Space Dandy, Big O, FLCL. All Gundam series believe it or not, although I think some of their OVAs/movies might have been manga first. Ghibli films often start from books, but Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were original stories, as far as I know. Then you have concurrent examples: Evangelion is a weird case where anime was being made first, but they released the manga first. Madoka was anime first, but the corresponding manga chapters were released very shortly after the episodes.
In most (but not all) cases, manga adaptations or spin-offs followed the successful titles, sometimes within the same year. There's a bunch more, but those are the most noteworthy examples off the top of my head.
As Jotaro once said: Yes Yes *YES*
As Melone once said: very... BELLISIMO!
Di Molto
Jotaro sees kamina's death : NO! NO! NO!
Tusk Act 4 once said, SPIN!
44:04 exactly
Gurren lagann is anime original
Any manga is made after the anime popularity
This
Right? We are used to it the other way around
Since we're on the question of voice actors a lot in here, just a funny note : Viral's voice actor is also the voice of Link. Yes, THAT Link.
@Nio37 not that Link, go back, GO BAAAAACK
You mean the "hya hya hyu hu huaaaaa" boy?
@@-Hola-2573 yup
The biggest thing about Kamina's death is that he literally comes back to life to avenge his own death, which is frankly awesome.
Ha! Did you think killing me would make me die!?
Shirou: confused screaming
“A true man doesn’t die! Even if he’s killed!”
He even invented an attack that is beyond cool and left his little bro with parting words that would eventually result in him becoming the savior of the universe!
Viral has a unique theme, by the way: It's called Nikipol, and he's the only villain in the whole show to earn that right.
Really nails down his role as a rival figure.
ROW ROW FIGHT THA POWAH

What ya wanna do is, what ya wanna do is just! Break the roof and you'll see the truth, uh huh!
FUCK YES!!!
This reaction is filled with spiral energy
These wins will be the Wins to PIERCE THE HEAVENS!
yeah, when you know that 13 episodes of wins adds up to 46 minutes of runtime then you know it's good
One thing I got to say. There is no mangaka. This is a studio anime. Meaning it's not an adaption of a pre existing work. It's all original. Some of the best anime are studio ones as they are fairly consistent. That is because the studio normally has a mostly complete story and vision from the first episode. Such as this, Kill la Kill, Code Geass and Cowboy Bebop.
Kill la Kill, no, as it was made by another studio (though roughly the same people as Gurren Lagann). However, Evangelion yes.
@@Muriuki34 I'm not saying those anime series were all made by Gianax/Trigger. I'm saying they were all made by anime studios and were not adaptations. And that they were not made by mangakas. Besides, Code Geass and Cowboy Bebop were both by Sunrise not Gianax/Trigger. I think you read my original comment wrong.
Wish it was, "nice video, must have take AGES to write, narrate and edit all on your own while also creating a Sins video simultaneously" but I'll take it.
Indeed, the studio had a mostly complete story and vision from the first episode. Unlike the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.
@@AnimeSinsNEW I had a similar comment also pointing the mangaka thing out, but do want to clarify that the hard work and quality of your videos is ALWAYS appreciated.
I fucking cried when Kamina said “believe in the you that believes in yourself.”
That moment REALLY hit hard at the time I watched it.
Believe in the Anime Wins that believes in you
it should also be said that this series has a phenomenal dub, having the voice of star fire do the voice for nia was such a perfect fit
Can’t wait for the second half. I never really got the feeling that people “dislike” the second half because everyone I know who has watched this Anime enjoyed it a lot.
I personally LOVE the way they went with it as it just makes it so much more mature and still interesting while upping the scale a ton without losing what makes a good anime: The Heart of a story. One of the reasons this is on my top 5 list for ever!
A few things because it might be needed.
1) Simon is pronounced like "See-moan" Like
"TheBlackEternalWings" mentioned.
2) Ep 14 is part of the first half
3) Yoko is 14, we don't mention it either.
4) I loved this video and thank you so much for allowing more people to see the anime. You earned a new subscriber. I really like that you write/narrate as you watch the show and not after. A refreshing change of pace for these types of channels. But if you do a part three where you cover the show after watching it again or just finishing it that'd be awesome too! :D
YOKO IS WHAT
YOKO IS WHAT!?
sssshhh dont say anything we will pretend like we did not read anything
Actually she is 18 the reason why they call her 14 is because of how their village calender works
When you just watch all of Gurren Lagann in one day. That tells you how good it is.
Hopefully you read this before recording for part 2, but his name is pronounced like see-moan, despite being spelled how Simon is traditionally done.
Or atleast that's how it's pronounced in Japanese and the English dub just decided to keep it that way.
Honestly, I'm willing to bet that the Mangaka chose an English name, but because Japanese phonetics pronounce it differently, the Japanese voice actors went with what sounded natural to them instead of pronouncing it the English way.
You see, Japanese vowels aren't pronounced the same way English vowels are. In order to get the "eye" sound from Japanese vowels, you'd have to use "ai". And there aren't really any vowels that would make a clear "uh" sound in Japanese.
As it is spelled, using Japanese phonetics, Simon would be pronounced Sea-moan. (As it is pronounced in the anime) The "i" makes the "ee" sound, like in meet, while the "o" says its name. I honestly think this is just a case of phonetic differences. It should be fine to pronounce it either way, because it's essentially the same name regardless.
@@silversamurai0267 gurran lagann is anime original. There's no manga. Also in the Japanese script they wrote シモン (Shi-mo-n), instead of サイモン (Sa-i-mo-n), And all the dubs pronounce it as Shi-mo-n or something similar (like see-moan).
@@laughingfox1606 After reading your comment, I decided to look into it a bit more.
I take back everything I said before. It is, most certainly, meant to be pronounced the way that is, for multiple different reasons.
(I lost my self-imposed bet. XD)
Sorry bud vid was finished back in June so Simon stays sadly
My man Kamina and my man kittan had the two best death scenes in anime.
The English dub is really good too should give it some credit
few times I'll say the dub is better. Yuri Lowenthal and Kyle Herbert blow it out of the park and is why I love Simon and Kamina so much
@@dtrain8530I first saw it on Sci-Fi channel's Ani-mondays.
Your content will pierce the heavens. Hold true to your goals my guy.
I know the internet is probably sick of hearing about it, but Gurren Lagann really is one of the best anime of all time.
Ahh my favourite anime :D:D
Also Viral is an anagram for rival which is really relevant as you will see.
Also Also this is an anime original so the manga was done after the anime blew up.
4:57 My personal favorite scene from the first episode. The way Simon repeats Kamina's words to give himself courage, his scream of fear which then transitions into one of adrenaline and courage as he shouts out "Bro!"
Gurren Lagann is something truly and utterly special. I won’t say it’s perfect for everyone, but there’s something...intangible, something I can’t precisely put into words about the show that makes the characters, all of them, feel so alive. Gurren lagann holds my #1 anime series of all time spot, and I don’t think anything can shake that.
Kamina's death feels so heavy for me since how His Voice Actor screams in Agony while Kamina gets stabbed by Spear Gunmen.
Oh yeah. This show. One of my all time favorites. Kamina might be popular but Simon’s character growth is something to love. Also Nia is adorable and Yoko is amazing. Plus here’s a fun fact, Leeron’s English VA is the same as Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Steve Blum.
Simon's sub VA also voices Natsu in Fairy Tail as well as sings the first 2 of Fairy Tail's OVA openings
Nia's English voice actress is also the voice of Starfire.
I know you mostly do the Japanese dub for these, but this is one anime I feel the english dub is so well done, especially Kamina
And The Spiral King, and The Antispiral, and Viral.
Undoubtedly the greatest mecha anime of all time! And yes,I am aware Gundam and Evangelion exist!
It's about on par with Code geass for me
The best anime ever period.
Nothing comes close to it.
Not me realizing that the intro to Gurren Lagann is one of the only animes that I watch that doesn't spoil most of the story in the intro
12 years later and that scene still hits just as hard as the first time..
I legit teared up when Simon snapped out of his funk
I teared up when this anime
It’s by far my favorite scene from f the anime
You can say a lot of things about Gurren Lagan but you cannot tell me that the soundtrack isn't an absolute banger in honesty
I love how story tells us that dude at spaceship in the first episode is Kamina's father just by adding chain sounds in scenes with him
well, it was actually supposed to be simon all along, but the director changed the ending while the show was being produced, so tehnically that first scene isn't even canon
@@giogio51592 Actually there's an entire fan theory that Kamina's father was part of the previous Team Gurren with Lordgenome and Father Magin. But they lost to the Anti-Spiral, then retreated to Earth, burying Lagann under Giha Village, where Kamina's dad went. It's why he was certain a surface existed, and why Magin already knew how to pilot a Gunman. It's also why Boota was dressed completely differently, because he regressed his own evolution to keep an eye out for Kamina. There's an entire post about it, I'd encourage you to look it up, it's fascinating.
@@BeyondBlue22 yeah, i know about this fan theory, but it's just a fan theory, and having first few seconds of the anime being not canon just makes me giggle like a 10 year old every time
No KILL ME's theory is correct because a fan actually asked the creators if it was true and they actually confirmed it.
Just for the record, the final battle in this anime that you will cover in part 2 has two different endings, depending where you watch it. One of them shows a final mech form and the other doesn’t.
We boutta do the impossible, we boutta see the invisible.
ROW ROW, FIGHT THE POWA
Since reaching adulthood,Gurren lagann has shaped into another tone after my newest revisit. Before all I saw as a teen saw unlimited manliness, now however, I see the animated modern Shakespearean tragedy it really was. For a poor soul fought literally against the world, losing his idolized mentor, crewmen and family, and eventually his love of his life to save Earth. In the end, he gained unravelling godly powers yet has nothing to put his heart towards anymore, just a wondering lone wolf, a god that has no pursuit within the world that he saved. I love this anime to death but it breaks my heart every time I review this absolute masterpiece.
I am not the only one who kept looking up at the episode-counter getting more and more riled up as it counted closer to 8 and began shaking for IT to finally happen when the it was reached?
Also, Kamina's phrase: "Believe in the me that believes in you!" is truly amazing.
Kamina thought of Simon as the most amazing person and that Simon believed in him is what gave him confidence.
And the same was true the other way around, with Simon believing that Kamina is amazing and that Kamina put so much on him gave Simon confidence and Kamina knew that.
This is my absolute favorite anime ever for all the reason you said in the video: great story building, amazing character building, animation quality is just top notch and music that makes your body produce adrenaline by the universe load. I really hope you'll do a part two!
Already finished : ) Naturally will release in a good few weeks though
Don't forget Kamina the best thing in all anime is Kamina.
Best character ever.
I'm so jazzed that you're so pulled into this anime. Reminds me of my first time watching it. Even now, I can't help but tear up at certain parts. Not just the sad parts, but the inspiring parts too. It's such a good watch and im truly in love with this anime!
Simon: pretty cool
Kamina: dope as hell
Aretenborough: R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Also rlq how does this make sense if Lordgenome already fought in space with gunmen then how does it make sense that they need gunmen for gunmen to survive in space and underwater if the stuff already happened it’s like gunmen devolved
You reminded me of probably my all time favorite anime. After watching, I made sure to tell all my new anime friends to watch you video, then the anime itself. You do such good reviews with your unique style. im surprised this video didnt immediately hit viral...
The part immediately after Kamina dies pissed me off so extremely much. Simon is like 12 yrs old, and yet when Kamina dies everyone leaves him to grieve alone and simultaneously continue his duties as the (now) most important person on the ship. When he's breaking down and all, and his grief is causing the team to be put into danger no one stops to think "hey, maybe we should offer him actual help either physically in his every day tasks or mentally in comforting him. He is literally a child after all." But no instead they get all extremely frustrated with him as though he's supposed to be handling these issues like an adult which he clearly doesn't know how. Nobody else I've talked to got the same feeling so it may just be me, but I dunno. It just bothered me so extremely much that no one even so much as extended a hand to help him. They never even tried tbh
The wikia says Simon was 14 in part 1, so he was the same age as Yoko I believe, he was just super short. I agree with everything you said though.
“Endeavor vs the Nomu” except the fact that Gurren Lagann came out 12-14 years before that fight was even written
Great vid as always
I been watching anime since the 80's and Gurren Lagann is a masterpiece.
This is hands down my favorite anime so thank you so much for making this!!!!!!
I love the detail of Leeron nodding confidently as Simon gives his speech. Like 'you tell em, son'. You just know he believed in Simon's inner strength the whole damn time.
38:10 I love how everyone is staring slack jawed at Simon’s Badass Boast, but the engineer is just nodding like he saw it coming a mile away. Man knew Simon had it in him!
Plz make part two asap but plz don't rush yourself this was my first anime that I have ever watched and u reviewing it gives me nothing but joy
Its finished. Will release in around 4-6 weeks
Been waiting about this,
The track you're looking for at 32:44 is "All you bastards, get fired up!!!"/"omaera zenin moete shimaetsu!!!". There actually is an official AMV/music video of the song, but it's a canon prequel of the series, and will have major spoilers if you watch it before the end, so I would try listening to a generic upload of it until then.
I love how the sins for each part half as long as the wins, gotta love it
Bro I’ve been waiting for you to do this since reincarnation of a slime this is my fav anime of all time thx man 💕
Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann is the most "hype" anime I've ever seen

You're welcome!
YES I LOVE THIS ANIME, THANK YOU FOR REVIEWING THIS
Same bro. Same
Gurren lagann was my first anime ever. It has a special place in my heart for showing me that anime shows aren‘t childrens cartoons. Needless to say, i loved everything about it, thanks for showing this to people who might not have seen it yet.
46 FREAKING MINUTES! YES! LET'S GO! This made my day!
I love viral, him and his warrior code when he finds out about kamina is one of my favorite moments
This was one of the first anime I’ve watched and it holds a special place in my heart. Just watching some of the scenes still sends a chill down my body that many of the anime I’ve watched can’t hope to replicate. I understand if some people don’t like the second half but for me it was a great experience throughout and I hope you find it enjoyable too. Can’t wait to watch the second half when you upload it.
I did not expect this early of a christmas present
4:25: alright everything’s going alright.
4:30: did he just call him Simon? DEUS VULT
i'm enjoying watchign this but GOD i'm gonna be mad when this episode ends when part 2 isn't out. i'm probably going to have to just re watch all of GL
The moment Kamina first shows up in your video..and nostalgic feels mate.
gah, Gurren Lagann was my second ever anime. and I recall it being amazing and I'm SO GLAD you're covering it
If you mind me asking just from curiosity what's first.
@@its_Criminal1 ahh my first ever anime was Fairy Tail, and though it’s not a good show, I love it more than anything else
Man its been a hot minute since I watched this. really enjoyed it, even though I´m usually not that much into mecha anime.
32:45 All of you get burned from the Gurren Lagan soundtrack
Yes yes yes thank you for doing my favorite anime of all TIME!!!
Great video
"Person who seems to have only watched the last 5 years of anime being impressed by a 2007 episode doing most of the things they liked about modern anime... and being weirdly clingy about which voice actor voiced what" the episode.
You gotta do Megalobox, amazing soundtrack, amazing fights that just make you want to bench press the moon.
thanks for your work
can´t wait for blind wave reaching ep 8 this week
Every time, EVERY TIME.... The kamina scene gets me man. I get teary eyed everytime I think about how it must feel for Simon, Yoko and the whole crew really, but especially Simon. That scene was so amazing, from the setup to the execution, to the fallout afterwards...
I swear still to this day Gurren Lagann has the best final fight in all of anime. Fight me,.
This is the manliest and most iconic anime ever
This man is the only man who has made me watch 1 hour vids ever
dude wtf i was not expecting this i love this show so much so happy to see you watching it
You should look at the community tab bro, they're all listed there as to what's coming lol
@@AnimeSinsNEW ill definitely be on there from now on
This show is great from start to finish, it is my personal number 1 anime of all ever since I watched it back in 2010ish... there is plenty of video essays breaking down how masterfully the story is created but to me it's more than that it was a story I needed at the exact moment I needed it I don't know if it would be a stretch to say it saved my life, The only 2 reasons I can think people don't like the second half is Kamina's death or the escalation of scale in the end episodes of which I could argue for hours why those are important to the series as a whole... great video for a great anime
Me: sees 46 minutes of Gurren Lagann
Always me: GIGA LIKE BREAKER!!!
Gurren lagann, The record holder of the biggest mech...ever.
Dude, SO GOOD
Damn I was waiting for a video just like this!
Just today I convinced 3 more people to join the Dai gurren brigade!
I couldn't stop the eye juice once I saw Kamina's scene again... its beautiful and sad and SO meaningful...
I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but when Kimina’s dies at the end the rain makes it look like Gurren Lagann is crying with everyone which makes it that more sadder. As if it somehow knows what happened and is also grieving.
Haven't seen the full anime before, but from what I've seen up to now- it is beautifully created.
Except episode 4.
Beware of episode 4.
For an Anime that's Been Released Since *2007!!* this Anime Is Fucking Impressive and Amazing, Suprisingly GREAT Animation For 2007...Became 1 of My Favorites In A Matter of Months
GOD!! DAMN IT!!!
If you're going into this blinded, then...that can't be help. But stopping here feels weird to me...
Awesome video tho. Will be looking forward to the next part.
I SAW GURREN LAGANN, I CLICKED!
I want to say something. Around 6:28 you made a comment about how Simon trying to manually dig back down made you chuckle. While it is funny, I think it also shows something: he was unable to use his drill because he was both afraid, acting in a cowardly manner, and trying to run away. Given what we learn about spiral power in the next few episodes (its ties to emotions and willpower), not to mention the second half, I think that was an awesome touch that adds just that little bit more to an already amazingly well fleshed-out world, no?
I just finished this yesterday its perfect timing
Didn’t realize I watched this about a year ago. Anyways, you can find a lot of animation like this from the company behind the show: Trigger. They also are the ones behind Kill La Kill, Promenade, and BNA
I am a HUGE fan of Gurren Lagann's ost as well, and I don't know if anyone else here has posted it, but the ost you're looking for at 32:30 in the video is called, "Gurren Lagann OST Disc 1 - 14 - All of You, Get Burned!!!"
Gurren Lagann was never my personal favorite show.
But holy cow is it the most epic work of media I have ever seen ever.
i watched that vid again to see how great of the master piece was

the op will always get me amped bro i love it and its rare if i dont skip it once
Good stuff
Bruh I just realized sumn that made my heart wrench. The way Kaminas Dad said goodbye to him "Abayo Kamina" hella resembles the way he said goodbye to Simon "Abayo Nachiko"
I just realized this video was done a week ago... and i really cant wait for him to enjoy the second half
