I absolutely love the way Subaru grows from someone that sees himself as the “protagonist” of this world and is therefore entitled to everything he wants, to someone that accepts that he isn’t even an important person in this world but still strives to do what he can to protect the ones he cared for.
I agree I originally dropped Re;Zero because of this. While I saw the animation as really good I was tired of essentially the same dumb protagonist in an already flooded genre. A friend recommended I watch it all the way through and just keep with it and by the end I loved it. What you said summarizes it perfectly. When he got to this world he treated it like a video game, he thought the world and it's people existed for him it's only after dieing and seeing others die does he realize this world was here long before him and will be gone long after he officially bites the dust. That fight with Emilia was the turning point of the show. I think Subaru realized in that fight that he didn't actually care for Emilia for the right reasons. He got angry because deep down he knew he was just lieing to himself and it's only once he sees everyone dead and sees Rem die in his arms that he actually starts to play by the world's rules instead of trying to bend the world to follow his rules.
Almost as if hes the embodiment of Pride or something /shrug But he is indeed an important person as far as everything is concerned, we wouldn't have the show if he wasn't.
@Juaquim Simon Calamiong i'm actually reassured about that little spoiler you made about him not getting any stronger, cause Re Zero is not about having OP powers and all that shit...
He is the weakest he can find there, just a normal boy, and he's surrounded by OP people with amazing powers. He also got the curse of the witch, which I believe it was arranged somehow, making him suffer the loss again and again not letting him rest in peace. Since he was unable to become a hero by power, he becomes a devil to protect everything he cares for, using even the curse to his favor again and again on his own will and favor, and even killing someone who killed everything he cared for. The whole story is about Subaru's growth from a no one to someone to rely on despite being powerless in a world where mostly everyone overpowers him. And every character has their own story behind too.
TheCoffeeNut711 Dude it’s pretty obvious what Subaru is fighting for. He comes to this new world as a hermit, and overall not the best person. He thinks everything in this world will be handed to him like in the isekai anime and manga he has seen before, however that’s not the case. He’s just stuck in this new world with no power. Eventually he gets wrapped up in stuff he didn’t plan to, and makes friends he didn’t expect to make, all the while becoming a more insightful and introspective person. He has to keep going, there is no other option for him. Also, I disagree the the girl is just a subplot. She is something Subaru initially takes for granted, and because of that he gets his ass handed to him. Anyways, if you want a better argument for his motivations, watch the full youtube video that you’re commenting on lol.
TheCoffeeNut711 Also, I disagree that the love interest is boring, she has her own unique motivations, like every character in this show, because every character in this show is really well written.
True. I almost never re-watch things, so I'm very glad I re-watched it with the director's cut edition. Really put a lot of stuff in perspective. I'm probably gonna watch it all again after season 2 ends.
The part where Subaru admits to Rem that he feels like a failure for wasting time and not having a clear future hit me haaaarddddd. I cried the entire 15 minutes of that scene.
Get some help lol you weebs have real issues and it’s the reason you obsess over this shit anime and otaku culture starting to ruin it for actual anime enthusiasts. Y’all some Epstein type of creepy with how you guys speak about rem and cast of females
TraderJay 22 You know that he was talking about the episode where he faced the things he ignored. I can understand his point, you could just pity Subaru. Standing against a wall, seeing atrocious things everytime he does a mistake. He came to the conclusion to turn his back to them, because he was scared, traumatized etc. realizing that he is not important at all, not a hero or not the reason why that world exist he is currently living in. In fact, those scenes where he admits his weaknesses and arrogance as well as running away with Rem was pretty hard to watch especially because Subaru is so a optimistic character. Therefore you could only pitty him for all of his terrible memories he made during his time in that world and it is understandable to me if people did shed a tear in some scenes. And I would recommend you, to search some words, you wrote, in the internet. Watching anime doesn‘t mean someone is a weeb, he didn‘t even wrote about“waifus“or smth, that defines a weeb in general.
@@AliasIsNotAvailable Subaru is indeed an interesting character. I did, in fact, feel empathy and kind of saw some things of me reflected on him. Obviously when I said that I cried 15 mins I was exaggerating... Other than that, his comment doesn't bother me because I'm at peace the fact that he's making way too many assumptions about me... I mean, how even dare he assume my sex? 👁️👄👁️
S. Well, there are indeed enough people like him exaggerating about some things a“bit“.Still, his comment was so tilting, that I needed to write that. I don‘t dislike him as a person, but his behavior wasn‘t right at all. True, there are some...lets say „weirdos“ „claiming“ „waifus“ and talking about them and yeah some do really ruin rarely some shows, but still its not that spread like he has written and there are still people criticizing the watched anime, talking about best moments, fights, scenes et cetera.
@@traderjay2261 My man, you might suck. Better get that checked out. If you think that was creepy then I can only assume you are a kid under 17, at least mentally.
I've seen a lot of people complaining about subaru being an idiot He actually sort of isn't. He's a traumatized young man slowly losing his sanity, forcing him to make the dumbest decisions out of desparation in order to save those around him, neglecting the fact that they don't know of multiple realities. He's been losing his sanity since his first revive, even though it isn't obvious. The changes to his personality were very subtle, his sanity was deteriorating little by little, until he finally couldn't take any more.
Wrong. If you paid attention to his interactions with Betelgeuse, Geuse called him out for faking his insanity, dead cold. Geuse serves to show what Subaru could end up being but *Natsuki men are built different* Subaru has shown he can handle everything thrown at him. That's why all the witches like him. Mentally, this boy is sound, and he's only growing.
@@dandytv1510 Wrong. The entire capital arc was the result of Subaru's slowly and subtly deteriorating mind causing him to take rash decisions based on emotions alone. It made sense why he was so overprotective of Emilia, as she was the only pillar holding him up through all those deaths. Subaru is a mentally vulnerable person just like any of us and that fact has been restated over and over and over again. Also why would you take Betelgeuse's words as is? He's fuckin Betelgeuse, the Betelguese.
Wrong . he is an idiot from the beginning how you may ask? it's simple when u r teleported to new fantasy world and took so long enough to understand that if he dies he restarts. any sane person would be looking for answers of how all this is happening and how to solve the situation he is going through instead of simping to first girl he see's and hoping to get laid or trying to have a tight bond with others wont help since everthing restars when he dies , so he is indeed a brain dead MC.
@@flashmanoz8543 It's elaborated on further in the web/light novels, but Subaru's rbd is more like deja vu. He can only remember bits and pieces sometimes. The more he dies the more clear it becomes. That's why he can never really prevent something on his first try. Try building something after reading it's manual once and see if you can do it with the bits and pieces of information you remember.
He's unquestionably not an idiot, comes off to me as at least 100 IQ, likely above that considering his degree of social competency; especially when working and arranging with the elite of the shows world. You're really not going to be able to do this without comparable intelligence so it would be ludacris to suggest otherwise.
I just got back from a trip to Japan and holy. You can't walk more than 20 steps in Tokyo without bumping into a Rem capsule toy machine, they're literally everywhere 4 years after this show came out.
The power of waifus is strong. The thing to keep in mind however, is that is completely divorced from the series itself. Rem is her own brand at this point. (Has way more merch than Emilia, for example)
Which is also what makes the show so heartbreaking as well. When subaru has his mental breakdown at the capitol you know hes in the wrong but you also cant help but sympathize with him. Despite how much he has gone through to achieve what he wants nobody will ever see that effort (at least not as much as it deserves)
Can I just say I love anime where you have characters like otto: where they initially seem like theyll be one-off side characters but then wind up being integral to the plot. Because its fucking awesome
One of the good examples of re: zero’s characters, we see him like an a*hole pushing subaru off, but as he approaches Otto in a different way, you find him loveable
One thing that I remembered when watching the show, seeing the city arc where we are introduced to the other heiresses, was not only that Subaru acts like a complete moron and feels like he is undermining his WHOLE development up until this point - what ALSO stuck with me was the fact that this is the ONE part of the anime where time does not skip back. He acts like a moron, strongly severs his relationship with Emilia, embarrasses himself AND her and shows disrespect to everyone.... and he HAS TO LIVE with the consequences. There is no do-over. I think that this was also a good lesson, for him and for the viewers: Even in a show with a magical reset button, some screw ups are permanent and require a LOT of time and effort to fix. You cannot always rely on luck/superpowers/plot convenience to fix those for you. So mind what you are doing in the first place.
that part was always painful to watch, but it makes subaru's later development both in himself and in his friendship with those who witnessed his worst (particularly julius) so much more satisfying
I like that all that stuff doesn't get undone, but subaru showed that he is willing to kill himself to get the reset he wanted (and even tried to right after that scene by fighting Julius), but doesn't? Like If he hadn't previously intentionally reset, I could accept that he's still afraid to die but after he dove off the cliff for the first time, I don't see why he doesn't just fix any major screw ups like that. He even gets traumatized later seeing everyone dead, but hasn't he seen that a million times by now and knows he can fix it? I like the idea of him resetting on death because we can explore character relationships in different ways, but I feel like showing him having the power to decide when it happens by committing suicide kind of ruins any tension the show builds up.
@@justincain2702 He didn't reset because that wasn't a major screw up. He dove off a cliff because Rem literally died and he was about to get killed by her sister. He nor any person would reset time just because they acted like a moron for a day, he is afraid to die and him acting emberising for a day isn't enguhe of a reson for him to reset (not to mention that he never knows how far back he will go) Trauma doesn't disapear nor do people get used to it, he can fix people geting killed, how does that suddenly change his trauma, how does that suddenly change that he has to watch people he cares about die time and time again? Him commiting suicide on any slight inconviniance isn't what he as a character wants to do nor is it something that any person would do. The resets do not get rid of any tension that is builds up as simply reseting is never enguhe to fix everything nor to overcome his oposition
@@justincain2702 Overall very long and wrong comment on your side. TL:DR Reseting because someone you care about got killed and you yourself are about to die isn't the same as reseting because you acted like a moron one day, they are different situations and not at all comparable Just because you died once doesn't mean that you aren't afraid or that you want to die again Trauma is a real issues for people, you don't get over it no matter how in much in control you might be. Just because you see someone you care about get killed a few times doesn't suddenly make it normal nor less traumatizing Reseting by killing himself is logical (if the situation demands it) and it doesn't suddenly get rid of his problems, the tension is still there. Overall preety bad and flawed arguments
As someone who is dealing with depression and anxiety and who feels somewhat like subaru did, this anime and subaru's personal journey specifically spoke to me on a level that no other show has even gotten close to. I will never forget the lessons this show has taught me and the hope that it has given me. I know some people will say "bro its just an anime blah blah" "you should go out more etc" but im really thankful this show exists.
Yea, honestly this show touched me as much as mob psycho did. The only reason I think mob psycho is universally loved while this one is more debated is because mob psycho has more general themes that anyone can relate to while this one is more niche and specific to a group of people.
@@dubiousdeliquite6641 in simple words, mob psycho is shonen with op powers but has his own struggles in keeping his powers in check to,while re zero is someone who has weak mc and is stuggling to survive and save eveyone within whats possible within him
Yeah I feel like subaru i saw all of my important people die multiple times without me being able to do anything so relatable im gonna be a gonner soon 😢
I can relate to it with similar reasons as well. Subaru makes mistake after mistake, he has very little to no sense of self worth. But despite that he keeps going, at first just to lift up other people, but then to lift up himself too, in his mind.
I had no interest in Re:Zero when it first came out, mostly because I've been burned on way too many isekai before. Five minutes into this video, I paused it and ran off to watch the director's cut. Here I am, two months later, to finish the rest of the video and say thanks for introducing me to one of my new favorite anime.
@@darktronics9901 Totally. I loved the first season so much that I was disheartened to see the second season pushed back. But that's nothing compared to the years everyone else had to wait.
The defining moment for me was episode 13. When Subaru cracked and admitted how self-centered he was, and Emilia rejected him and told him how she really felt about his treatment of her. That's when I knew I was in for a good time. An isekai that subverts the main isekai protagonist tropes and forces him to suffer until he improves on all the mistakes he makes, not letting him die and forcing him to continue the loop until he can learn how to break out of it and become a better person. That's when I knew this wasn't the standard isekai the genre was used to, this was so much more.
This is essentially Hohouin Kyoma/Rintarou Okabe saving Mayushi loop gone into overload, he knows he can't make it happen no matter what so the complex starts hitting hard. Titles that can floor that pedal are good in my books.
That's exactly what I feel like when I finished watching ep.13. After exposing the flaws of the protagonist, instead of making an episode where the protagonist experiences some dramatic moment and come to the realization that he's wrong like in other anime, Re:Zero showcased how the protagonist fell all the way through hell and how he's incapable of escaping the agonizing death loop. It's through several episodes of excruciating death that he finally manages to come to the realization that he's personally and actions are flawed and all. I would totally argue that this anime is closer to reality than any of the anime that I've ever watched.
The thing with Barusu is that we can't really judge him without taking his personal problems into account. He's not a naïve selfish hikkikomori. He's a deeply damaged person suffering from intense depression, due to the excessive pressure Japanese society puts on children and to his idolizing his admittedly larger than life father. But we don't get that info before season 2. However, even with what we have, it's clear that Barusu is not selfish or self-centered, he just takes quite a while to actually grasp the situation he's in, hence the debacle during the royal candidates presentation and his (apparently) deserved beating by Julius. That stemmed from his not realizing his own limitations, because he constantly feels that acknowledging any needs/desires/merits he may have is just wrong, which is part of his crippling depression.
Yes. Also we see a lot more of the behavior caused by his depression in the light novel. There he also selfharms in some instances even before all of his death cycles. So he was already pretty messed up even before being summoned to that world.
I gotta say, the ATTENTION TO DETAIL in Re:Zero is INSANE. From the parts when Elsa threw her dagger randomly at Reinhard for some reason just before escaping, to the suspicion of Subaru being a spy because of his hair color, black. Highly similar to Elsa the ‘Bowel Hunter’ who is from the north and is foreign to the country herself.
Holy shit. I've watched Re:Zero many times and absolutely adore it, but it NEVER occurred to me that Subaru's hair could be the reason Roswaal was suspicious of him being a spy.
@@RandomPerson-cm2wg okay people,,,I have watched over 850 anime in 1 year......but I think spending that much time on different anime is way better than watching 1 anime with 900+ episode twice😨😨😨(for the record I dropped one piece at half of episode 1,bleach at episode 24,seen naruto but dropped naruto shippuden at episode 22 and hunter x hunter at episode 22,I have discovered different anime series)
Soumitya Patil If the average anime is 12 episodes (4 hours)and you watch 850 in a year, that’d mean that you on average spend about 6-7 hours a day watching anime. Dunno why, but I find that a bit hard to believe.
@@idgfaz Don't worry. It's the good kind of annoying that people refer to. As in,the character flaws he has. And if you are asking about what those flaws are then they are a bunch like his initial ignorant nature, his need to put on a facade, his unhealthy desire of making Emilia just follow him(until later down the course ofc) etc. Ofcourse, gradually Subaru overcomes most if not all of these flaws and becomes a truly great person.
@@idgfaz There is also ofc, a good amount of haters of the series as well that too think of Subaru is annoying.Though in that case,it's just senseless hatred. From the many 'haters' of this series I have talked to,none have been able to convince me that Subaru isn't a well written character so unless you are in the mood of argumenting with those guys and correcting them on their horrible misunderstandings, it is best to ignore their comments.I know it is annoying to see people crap on a genuinely well written piece but oh well, it is internet. Opinions with no base were always going to exist in such a free place.
season 2, in the sanctuary, the second trial. that’s the sad part. thinking about the timelines subaru leaves behind still continue, is horrible. i need them to confirm if this is true or not,
I think having episodes longer than 22min definitely helps make the plot of the episodes not feel rushed and completely flushed out. Im getting so tired of all these Animes with only 12x 22min episodes
No offense to other reviewers, but you are the only person who really took the time to notice how well written this series is. Yes, it has flaws. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be perfect in its own way. I’ve read up to everything in the web novel and it somehow just keeps getting better. Subaru just keeps getting better as a character. The other characters get developed, there are some bomb ass fights. And somehow, its still says a lot of about toxic otaku culture is. Even to now. The amount of detail the author took in writing the characters. Especially the names of certain characters, how it relates to greek/sumerian/roman mythos, astrology, and yes even their birthdays have some level of meaning. Its amazing, its really fucking great.
@@ChristinaMyBeloved wym? I would argue that Subaru is not prideful whatsoever. Being prideful means your overconfidence is your downfall. Subarus insecurities were his downfall. He had such little faith in his abilities that it hurt his ego whenJulius took what little he had to be proud of. If you mean currently in the web novel.... its even less true because Subaru has become more humble, mature, and ready to help his friends when they need him. He constantly sacrifices himself for others.
Yes this show is very well written. I really love the dynamic between Subaru and Emilia. It’s so adorable. You can’t do anything to make me hate Emilia’s character. I just hope a girl with her temperament actually exists in reality.
beatrice is the most underrated character for me when she sends him away after he killed Emilia and says: "Please just die somewhere where I cannot see it" It hurt me so much she instantly made it into my top 3 characters.
Yo Mother's Basement. I've got a slight correction to make about Subaru's heroics. He actually DOES lead the charge against the White Whale. He isn't the main combatant, since he doesn't have that much skill. But he does in the literal sense LEAD the charge, by charging forward ahead of everyone else and yelling over Crusch's order while everyone else is still staring in awe at the whale.
His actions also indirectly reawakened the morale of the army as he to the army at least selflessly and courageously charged in to fight a whale even though he was the weakest one there this ability to organize an army is evidence to his potential to be a great leader
@@redfrojoe2602 Subaru as king is Tappei's ending lol. It's a joke but he is cut out to be a general considering his ability to figure out who would work best for who thanks to his constant struggles.
No lies here. Also don't understand the portion of the fanbase that dislikes Subaru at all. He is humanity incarnate in animated form. He fails, he persists, he succeeds. He's fragile, insecure, and developing PTSD. And yet he still doesn't give up.
He's not developing ptsd he has some major cptsd basically from ep 2 onwards lol. His ptsd will inevitably be very bad because a core feature of recovering from trauma or not is environment in the immediate aftermath. He has no one to talk to for a long long time.
Me after reading Re:Zero LN Vol 9: "I guess they couldn't end it on the same note in the anime since the fanbase would explode without a confirmed season 2" Director's Cut Ep 13: "Well, S2 is confirmed, now let's put the fanbase on fire"
VILMA Lopez season 3 would either have to be short or a lot longer (because arc 5 has 80 chapters in web novel. So it would either cover only arc 5, or it would cover arc 5 AND arc 6, and that would have to be like 50+ episodes, since 50 episodes has covered about 15 light novels)
It's true though, I came to love the anime after rewatching it, it gave me a deeper understanding of the characters. 4 rewatches since 2016 and I still get emotional and invested in scenes. Rem executing Subaru always makes me cry.
Dude, such a good video. I can't stand how underrated re:zero is. People hate on episode 18 (i think?) Where rem and Subaru have a super self-aware conversation, and I truly believe its because that kind of soul searching and honesty makes them uncomfortable.
People hate this show because they said they cant be satisfied with the Protagonist and the plot was sadistic as fuck. The plot was sadistic alright but Subaru dont deserve the hate he gets.
I think the hate is justified against him as a person though not as a character. A major component of the story’s main theme is to show people who are like Subaru how unlikable he (and therefore they) actually can be. The theme ultimately ends with “but you can become better just like him”, but Subaru is undeniably a bit of a shitty dude before he gets his redemption at the end. People who hate Subaru as a person are mostly those who already are aware of his flaws, but don’t find those flaws relatable. For those people, this anime is 20 episodes of an unlikable main character apparently suffering for the sake of suffering, followed by him going all hero-mode for a waifu he seemingly has little reason to care that much for. Sure there is more beneath the surface, but its hard to look and find it when the initial presentation turns you off so much.
episode 18 stands out to me personally more than most media in my life period, just based on how relatable and gut-wrenching it is, that and seeing Rem cry always gets me
Interesting thing is that I can remember many characters from re:zero, as he just said here. I can't name and describe more than a 3-4 character for different isekais or other genres, yet re:zero somehow made all the cast important to the plot.
I remember it because that's the only Isekai I remember watching. Ever. And hating it. Also, Gigukk's anime in minutes parody was way too funny and made more an impact than the original.
@@Emily848 Cause most of the cast has romanic names and not (please excuse the hyperbole) Tatsuya-onii-chan-Daisuki-des-san sama-sensei-kun. Every Character has a very striking Design and a describtive name. For example Willhelm means, strongwilled and determination. Reinhardt means strong Advisor(which is exactly his job in the story, the strongest advisor in the entire world for Felt) I could go on with the other names, but you get my point
I watched Re: Zero because of this video, and I'm honestly not sure I can thank you enough for that. I've re-watched it about twice, purchased the first few light novels, and hunted down some of the alternate sin-ending stories. This video itself is a masterpiece on getting an anime fan into Re: Zero and I am super grateful you made it.
**Spoilers** I watched this after seeing this video title, and decided to finish the anime and then come to this video. I had thought it would be just another Isekai. But instead it changed my life. I only realised once Subaru started becoming a protagonist that I hated. I hated what he was saying, what he was doing. And then it hit me. When he was yelling at Rem "This is the kind of man I am. I have no strength, but I want it all. I have no knowledge, but all I do is dream. There's nothing I can do, but i struggle in vain. I hate myself!" following that he says "Before I came here to all of you, you have any idea what I did? I did nothing. I've never done a single thing. I had all that time, all that freedom. I could have done anything, but i never did a thing." I paused the anime. It hit me why this was called a "masterpiece". I hated Subaru because he was me. I want to be fit, but never work for it, i want to be smart but never study, all i do is waste time watching anime and reading manga, watching shows and fucking around. And then I empathised with him. I understood that he was the audience, but it wasnt meant to make you hate yourself. It was showing me that I can redeem myself. And so i kept watching and found that message too, learning from your mistakes, swallowing your pride and admitting you were wrong. Getting the fuck up and DOING SOMETHING. Anything. So that's what I'm going to do, I'm going to get fit, I'm going to go study and I'm going to be a man that I can be proud of, and I'm going to learn to love those around me and not go by just what I want. Thanks Re:Zero for waking me up. I had it for a year or two and let myself slip, but after watching that one scene it was as if I woke up again.
I cried at that episode. There were some episodes that gave me watery eyes but that shit was just 👌 10/10 honestly one of the best dialogues I heard in anime damn.

@Ákos M. I disagree with it being mediocre. If I had to rate the arcs, I would say: Arcs 1-3 (first season of the anime): 8/10 First cour Arc 4: 7.5/10 Second cour Arc 4: 1000000000/10 I'm currently reading arc 5 almost finishing it, and I know the plot of Arc 6. Of course it's a lot better, but calling arc 4 mediocre... offends me xD
@Ákos M. eh, arc 6 is definitely a masterpiece, but if arc 4 is an 8, arc 6 is a 10, calling arc 4 mediocre comparatively isn't fair imo. Arc 6 is probably one of the best pieces of fiction I've read though, so I still think you have a point. Arc 6 is going to be like one of the best things ever put onto anime, onto tv, onto screen, fuck idk tbh. Fuck, I'd call it even better than aot season 4.
isnt arc 4 considered part of the prologue too? I mean considering there will be 11 arcs and arc 4 ist pretty much the lore and charcater development/interactions focused I would say its still in the category of the arcs that put the base of the story as a whole.
Fully agree. This show is absolutely a masterpiece work of art and storytelling. Its easy to take things that are beloved by many for granted, especially when they do not flaunt their "deepness" or artsiness, and instead favor a different style that directly addresses the audience in an honest, unflinching way, allowing them to feel these themes and messages for themselves. One day if I ever get the opportunity, I would happily incorporate this show into college class lesson plan that studies literature, possibly specifically a course that studies psychological horror.
Honestly re zero has a rank on its own for me. It just perfects everything its trying to do and goes beyond every single stupid anime cliche(looking at you sao and highschool dxd)showing us the true suffering someone could go through if he was going to get isekaid. Also Subaru as an protagonist is just perfect making us realize what an ordinary otaku should go through for his character to develop going through hell many times, even dying a lot and seen his loved one dying again and again in brutal ways and still at the end he doesn't become an dense idiot overpowered mc, annoyingly yelling in every battle getting all the girls and making the whole world love him(Looking at you again, Issei)but instead only his character grows mature enough to realize he is not someone important just because he came to this world and later on he even becomes confident.(we see this in episode 10 of season 2 where at the end when Garfield becomes annoyed and threats Subaru instead of getting afraid or angry like he would usually he just speaks up with a confident tone and even shocks Garfield a little revealing a bit of his one ability which is return by death when Garfield tells that he doesn't know pain, without being afraid of satella doing something to him) so im just really angry every time an idiot "intellectual" just stands up and says"lmao r:zero stupid not character development"If you are going to rant the show first watch it, rewatch it and understand what its trying to show us
The episode last week just reminded me why I loved Re:Zero so much when I first watched it, and I’m glad, because normally I don’t get the same feelings (or greater) when I try to rewatch a series. So far, Re:Zero has been the only exception. Can’t wait for season 2!
Got this spoiled to all hell. >Finally ended up watching it. >Immediately forgotten all spoils after five minutes, and enjoyed every GODDAMN SECOND OF IT. *But in all seriousness, this has Drama. And it's not for everyone.* In Re:Zero characters finish their sentences. Which means: unlike in regular conversations where you stop yourself from saying something terrible, in here characters will finish that sentence with a mic drop.
I’m not super into much anime (anymore, I was a giant nerd in my teens when the only real option was $30 vhs per episode or two), am more subbed due to the SBFP connection, but I decided to watch this series a couple years ago and really, _really_ enjoyed it. Didn’t know anything going into it except from the endorsement here.
I would suggest continuing with the Web Novel for Re: Zero as you seem to have thoroughly enjoyed your experience with the show. Been following the published chapters since early 2014 and, while the Anime did a superb job adapting most of the first 3 Arcs, the source material is just brilliant. We are currently up to Arc 6 Ch 75 for fan translations, with Ch 79 being the most recent. Check out the subreddit for a quick guide on where to pick up from where the show left off (if you aren't starting from the beginning).
Cornbeee I respect your enthusiasm in reading a fan translation, but I can’t bring myself to pirate his work out of respect. I’ll continue buying the English ln legally at the bookstore, thanks.
First Cooommment for some reason anime watcher often can’t take drama, my friends who for some reasons never watch anything except anime, so when i check his watchlist, 90% of them are slice of life or ... so i made him watch the first part of The Godfather and he can’t take it, then next i made him watch a drama anime and he still can’t take it
I think episode 15 "The Outside of Madness," is easily one of the best episodes as it has great animation, voice acting, and amazing use of the score in spades. It introduces one of the most unique characters in Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti and uses this introduction to show what he is capable of in some horrifying ways. The fights in this episode are amazing to watch and the showdown between Rem and Betelgeuse goes with a great musical track to back it up.
how anyone can claim that re:zero has shallow characters and themes is beyond me, subaru is by far one of the best anime protagonists of all tike, and like in terms of themes, omg i have so many different speculations etc etc,
Bro, if you ever go to a comment section with someone talkshitting Subaru you'd be fucking shock. They hated Subaru and said he deserve to die repeatedly. Apparently people want him to loop so many times just to train and called him a coward because he's afraid to die despite his powers. And some people wanted his power RBD just so they could rape, fuck, repeat an entire timeline. Trust me, i've been seeing some evil people in the internet and that last one almost made me bleach my eyes off.
St. Bermuda jesus christ, yeah i’d say that’s the problem with the anime community sometimes, some people tend to be really socially inept, and therefore have an irrational dislike for characters like subaru. obviously not everyone, but there are quite a lot, and just the fact that their criticism of him consists of the fact that he didn’t rape the girls says everything you need to know about those type of people.
Gotta say, I feel like people subconsciously dislike this show because Subaru as a character hits a little too close to home for a of it's viewers(myself included), in that a lot of his very blatant flaws are applicable to us.
I started disliking the show once Subaru recovered froh his trauma through a blue-haired pep talk tbh, Otabe from Steins Gate for example stays sad when he gets sad u know
Heinz Kohl Subaru was relieved that someone at least recognize the efforts he put in and the hardships he’s been through to get to where he is in the anime.
@@inesit523 I'm not gonna get technical but I think you know why, while very i inspiring indeed, that part was pretty unrealistic from the perspective of modern psychology
I didn't dislike it but I do remember thinking that I didn't like Subaru bc he seemed like your average, run-of-the-mill, "I'll follow muh queen and do the right thing" type. I'm fairly certain that I disliked him until the end. The non-Subaru characters (minus Emilia) were enough to sway me to be positive on the show as a whole tho
@@mitcy21 AOT S4 Part 2 is defo one of my favs. The story really surprised me with how it keeps building, and everything is making so much more sense. I also really like Eren's character.
...Isn't that what this person was trying to say? They were making fun of people who hate cliche anime characters, but then also turn around and hate an actually good and interesting one.
@@ramennnoodle is he really that good and interesting, though? Just because the mc isn't OP doesn't mean the he/she is "realistic" or good. I haven't seen season 2 yet, but from what I remeber from season 1, Subaru is just another edgy, annoying, arrogant and dislikable MC that everyone in the show loves for some reason, even though they have no real reason to. Also, the show tries to portray him as a "normal" human who struggles but everything always seem to go his way. Re:Zero is an ok show for me, and Subaru is by far my least favorite thing about it. Again, just because your character isn't "perfect" doesn't mean the character is well written.
@@lucasks26 subaru knows he is not perfect and he hides it, from even himself, acting arrogant and and prideful . At the end of season 2 part 1 otto made subaru "realize" he can't do everything alone and realize he isn't alone and that he can trust someone like him. Subaru has development both from character and person itself changing himself from an arrogant and edgy teen to someone who started to understand his limits and what he needs and not to do.
season 1 was already masterpiece worthy, season 2 just put the show in its own league. And most importantly, most episodes don't even have opening or ending songs! pure 30mins of thriller I really hope the show ends in something like he saves everyone and grows old happy and dies then return to the real world to make amends to his parents and live a meaningful life.
If we can get a proper adaption for S3 and S4, you're all gonna be in for a treat. ESPECIALLY season 4 which would cover arc 6 of the series. Arc 6 cements Tappei as a damn genius. The range of emotions, the amount of character development, twists, and turns in that arc are just fantastic. So great. You think you love some of these characters, but after that arc, you love em 10x more.
Re:Zero's writing is genius because it completely abandons and rejects plot armor. Subaru has to earn that plot armor, by losing many MANY times in very painful ways. I agree, I just watched this series and it's one of the deepest stories I've ever seen from a character development perspective, and it tickles a mind like mine that doesn't want shallow character and plot. When anime is done like this, it's why I love the genre.
@Juaquim Simon Calamiong I hate Subaru and understand his situation. But I'm glad he did grew up since that attitude of his from the start wouldn't help him
Imagine if Subaru got trapped somewhere with no chance of escaping and no one to help him, he'd have to wait until he died of starvation. Then return by death kicks in and Subaru finds out that his last save point was at exactly the same moment when he got trapped, he is now softlocked into an eternity of waiting to die from starvation, only until the witch decides to intervene.
Re:Zero and Konosuba are the only Isekai I really "like". The power fantasy isekai are like shots of heroin, it feels good initially, but there's no lasting substance. "Oh boy, the unfairly overpowered protagonist won without breaking a sweat... hooray?" Having a protagonist that is underpowered enables both of these shows to be worth watching for the long haul. Subaru, and Satou "The Guy" Kazuma have to earn their victories through wit and effort, instead of it being handed to them on a magical platter, which is just more interesting to watch.
Log Horizon is probably the only example of an overdog isekai protag I like. But the truth about Shiroe is that, even if he's considered one of the best players in the game, to the point even long-time vets flinch at the sound of his name, his class is primarily centred around support, meaning he's heavily reliant on good teamwork, and the rules of the world are so much more daunting that in the original game that he still needs to learn new things to stand a chance in the battles. What actually makes him 'op' is how he is able to use his wits to create a new home out of the weird lawless world as he sees fit and part of the fun is anticipating with what crazy idea he'll come up next.
"So to aid those of you who dont have the time or maybe convince those of you who dont have the interest" this is what i feel like marks my favourite content from you Geoff. Getting into shows i would never watch on my own, or hearing about stuff netflix would never think to reccomend me, or just telling me why my favorite show is better than i thought it was.
Ram is very underrated. Betty is a true ally. Rem needs a hug and thank you. Emilia needs to be loved for being the person she is. I can't wait for season 2 and I will read the light novel.
I literally just finished S1 today! (I watched the whole thing in two days lmao.) and as I said in a reddit post: I love this show, I really do. And hell, it’s genuinely so distressing to me. As someone who has been suicidal for most of their life, the concept of dying and continuously starting over is truly horrifying and it really hits me on a deeper level, but I think that’s why Re:Zero is so unbelievably inspiring to me? This dude suffers and dies and dies and suffers and suffers and dies and watches everyone he loves die and die and die and die. He can’t tell anyone about it, and yet he always remembers every terrible, awful, painful way he dies and everyone else dies so he just suffers and suffers and suffers alone. Completely and utterly and totally alone. Until he can eventually-maybe- find a way to fix all the things that go so completely and awfully and terribly wrong, but until that day, that sweet fucking day, that he can somehow use all of the awful experiences he’s had to fix everything, he just... Keeps going, man. He. Keeps. Going. This show genuinely inspires me to want to live. To want a future. To keep going. Very few anime have done that for me, though, sure plenty of anime gives me those good wholesome feels, and reminds me that not everything is bad, and others have inspired me to keep going until this point in life, but Re:Zero really just gets me right in the chest cavity. I’m so glad I finally decided to give it a shot. Episode 18- I literally just finished it before I wrote this- was really beautiful. That dialogue? Beautiful. The way it was composed too-the clouds, the birds, *the tears...* Incredible. For real though, I just want to thank Tappei Nagatsuki for creating this wonderful story, and here’s to however many more episodes and light novels there are for us weebs to consume, cheers!
bruhhh what did u think at the ending of eo 15 The outside of madness.... God those ending credits did something to me lol, Requiem of Silence became one of my absolute favorite pieces ever
Little Wan “Sleep... Along with my daughter.” That whole episode was seriously one of the most intense. The ending piece though, yesss oh my GOD. Just that eerie, beautiful music over Subaru’s frozen fuckin’ headless corpse. INCREDIBLE.
Your right, I really understand Subaru and relate to he's suffering. Which makes him one of my favourites Anime/Light Novel characters out there. Man this series is so good 😄
I personally loved re:zero. Legit only finished it early today but I found it so interesting as how emotionally it effected me, and how surprised I was at how the idea of him resetting time being used so differently at multiple times, with it first used as a last resort, and then he starts to use it more to his advantage, trying to learn more each time. Further more, the anime itself has an interesting story, and the way that each character developes is still very interesting. I personally found it as a 9.8/10, and I don't really care how others view it it was definitely one of the best anime i've ever watched in this genre.
plus the whole start of the second season, running wholly through how his mind is effected by the events that happen, and how he cannot fix some things, and no matter what he wants to do, his power has limits. For example *Spoiler alert~*
Nice Analysis! :), Season 3 will also be amazing, and imo, if directed and done right, not only will it be the best Re:zero season by far, but Also one of the best Anime seasons. If you like reading, i recommend you give the Lightnovels a chance, if you don't then it doesn't matter, season 3 will drop either much later this year (very unlikely) or Next year (more likely) as it has been announced
And to anyone who says the show has no consequences, just looking at Subaru’s face as he remembers each and every consequence of his past actions and genuinely starts to try and help others as a result... it all matters. Very refreshing when it comes to the time loop genre.
And to make things better, by season 2, the time loop actually fails when Subaru's respawn point is set after a major character gets severely injured. That scene really is devastating, as it shows that Subaru's return by death ability will only keep him from dyeing, and won't adapt to make sure any of Subaru' companions die.
@@venix2256 WTF ARE you on about mate? Are you ready to die just cause you can respawn? NO that's how humans are..Subaru is scared of dying just like a normal human, anyone who wishes to die wants to die once not 100 times, and if they come back alive, death will be a big fear for them.
"And if you turn your brain off while you're watching it, it's gonna leave you a little bored". This is so true on so many levels. Why bother investing time and brain cells into the show when you can just convince yourself to think that the show is boring and bad just because you don't get it. Smh.
That’s actually what happened when I first watched it. I didn’t have a lot of expectations since that this anime was responsible for “the waifu wars”. So I didn’t even bother to turn my brain on. The first 5 minutes were boring and I left it to dust. I only gave it a second chance after my friend pleaded me to give another chance and I heard that Re Zero’s author was friends with the author of Konosuba, a series that I enjoyed. Edit: spoilers ahead To my surprise, I enjoyed it. After getting slammed in the face so many other isekai trash, this felt like a breath of fresh air. Subaru’s conversation with Rem was so relatable that it hurts, and Beatrice’s demise in the 2nd season left me in tears. And it only gotten worse after I found out that Echidna left her all alone in that library for 400 years just for her curiosity. Roswal reminds me a lot of Hisoka from hunter x hunter because of how unpredictable he is and the clown makeup, oh and he’s voiced by DIO.
@@RandomPerson-cm2wg Yea I didn't expect much when in went to watch it to the only reason why I even bothered was bc my friend told me to bc if my profile picture dosent give it away I love konosuba since it was the first Anime I ever watched and it just really like isekai animes in general alot of them are disappointing but this one surprised me and was really fucking good im glad I gave it a watch 😂
@@herrikudo to be fair, those other guys, as you said, have never seen or heard of Subaru before. So what he appears to be is a pretentious, arrogant, abrasive, impulsive, and annoying kid who selfishly barges into the Royal Selection. ...which is, for the most part, correct
@@herrikudo In my comment, I didn't go into the contents of what he said, only how he appears when he barges into the room. But well, going into that content: Speaking in a derogatory manner about everyone other than him. Disregarding the feelings of Emilia, acting as if she couldn't act on her own, proclaiming himself as Emilia's knight, when, at this point in time, she doesn't regard him as one. Insulting all the royal knights by disregarding their positions as just some family inherited stuff without any merit. He's making himself out to be a super relevant and important person, despite the fact that he isn't (well, he is, but not in the way he pretends to be) With his actions he not only emotionally hurts Emilia, he's also detrimental to her standing as a royal candidate. So yes, he said plenty of wrong stuff. Don't get me wrong, Subaru is imo an incredibly great written character, but also an inherently flawed person, and this scene perfectly shows this.
When Re:zero eventually ends, which at the time of writing this there will be four more arcs with the last one stated to be the longest, I will feel empty. There is nothing like Re:Zero, it has done so many things nothing else has and has left an impact nothing else will. I love that it happened and I hope I live to see it's end, but that doesn't mean I want to let it go either.

@@arkabarma3286 Yeah. A lot of AoT fans really hate Rezero and don’t want it to succeed. It’s probably the fandom with the largest proportion of hate for Rezero.
While I totally agree with this video, Re:Zero is definitely a masterpiece, I'm a bit upset you didn't show the introduction to the whale as one of the highlights in sound design. Sometimes the lack of sound is just as powerful and that's exactly how that scene starts. None of us as viewers or the awaiting army know what to expect and the silence only amplifies the unease. That silence is finally broken by the what can only be described as something absurd given the setting, a polyphonic ring tone. It's a cute yet creepy jingle but it also does nothing for our uneasiness. It creates a sense of anxiety as we wonder if it'll even appear. Sure enough the whale is there but rather than give it some more intense music to try to hype it up the ringtone is the main focus. The ringtone is cut and Subaru along with Rem rush head first and steal the first blow, now the more intense music is introduced and the hype just skyrockets. The only bad thing about this scene are the credits rolling, signalling that it's the end of the episode and at the time, I'd have to wait a week to continue, straight after being pumped to brim with hype.
While I absolutely love ReZero and it's directing I imagine they took that trick of creating tension with silence cut by a mildishly annoying and harmless ringtone from Jurassic Park; maybe the trope has been done before but that's the earliest I've seen it
@@maison.clemens176 There's always going to be some form of personal opinion when talking about things like this. My opinion is that it is a masterpiece, the same as Geoff's. Your may differ but both are equally valid.
As A huge re zero nerd it always makes me happy to see videos like this where it's not just "rem best girl uwu" but actually breaking down the whole series and it's themes down to truly see why it's such an amazing show. Also, knowing what's coming down and the amount of care and effort whitefox seems to be putting on season 2 I only expected more great videos like this one from not just you but the whole anituber community as a whole which, I can't wait, seeing everyone's reactions to all that's going to happen will surely be entertaining and hopefully by the time season 2 ends everyone can agree that truly, re zero IS a masterpiece
I agree wholeheartedly. Whenever I see these videos it kinda reinsurers me how great this series really is. And I'm super excited to see everyones reaction to season 2!!! Because if that's not a masterpiece I dont know what is
Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever, not even getting skinned alive and mutilated would it think this crappy sieries to be good, let alone a masterpiece.
So basically it's a anime that goes above and beyond in its genre and instead of giving your one dimensional wish fullfillment characters it gives you real characters who flaws and short comings, and goals and wishes As well as a world that unlike what people expect it to be is just like the real world but filled with elves and dragons and time loops. It's amazing and people who say otherwise need to have a nice glass of water. Mixed with poison
Re:Zero is the only anime I've watched where I felt like I NEED to buy the source material and continue the narrative past the anime. I've purchased all the light novels (even the EX ones) and can't get enough. Subaru is an amazing protagonist, because he's flawed. And the story has so much going for it. Mystery, great characters and character development, foreshadowing, failures and successes.
Everyone is flawed, and that's what I came to enjoy. Everyone is so...human. Even Reinhard has very believable flaws, despite being pretty much qualifiably the most powerful being in existence.
Any lesser isekai anime would have *allowed* Subaru to rewind his talk with Emilia but the fact that it didn't? Major respect and it truly shows that the anime was going for a message, even if plenty missed it at the halfway point Definitely needed this video, major thanks for making it!
@@herrikudo Yeah, I agree with you, there. Rem has proved time and time again how selfish she can be for Subaru. However there are some people who have a very perverted idea of honor and favors. Emilia was the first person to save Subaru's life, and he feels indebted to her to pay that back, even if that means not choosing best girl. I think Emilia's flaw is exactly her biggest strength. Her being the embodiment of a pure heart means she lacks the selfishness to claim what she wants, unlike Rem. She wants to change the world for everyone to be equal not for just her sake, but for everyone's sake. Meanwhile Rem wants to have Subaru for herself purely for her and his happiness, a trait that is actually needed for healthy relationships, so long as it doesn't become possessive (which best girl isn't.)
@@herrikudo If Emilia doesn't have to fall for Subaru just because he "has done everything for her", then Subaru doesn't have to fall for Rem for the exact same reason. The series makes it really clear.
@@herrikudo She also broke every bone in HIS body. Seriously, we can't talk about what he/she did because there's no end to that argument. The fact Emilia remembers nothing about what Subaru did for her (which isn't true since he does thing that don't get rewinded) is no justification for him to just give up on her, if he cares for her. And he does, and he makes it really clear that he doesn't care if she (or anyone) doesn't remember him, HE remembers and that's enough for him. That + his own problems and personality (explored in S2) + the fact that love and attraction aren't a logical "X did more than Y so X wins" = Subaru doesn't own Rem his love. He also makes it clear to her, instead of keeping his mouth shut and playing the maybe-harem card to manipulate her, which is an extra point to his decision to pursue Emilia. We could also talk about how the only time he considers Rem as a partner for life is an attempt to use her as an escape from reality and not for genuine affection in that regard, but I don't think we need to go there.
I think this old poem is relevant here: You said: “I’ll go to another country, go to another shore, find another city better than this one. Whatever I try to do is fated to turn out wrong and my heart lies buried like something dead. How long can I let my mind moulder in this place? Wherever I turn, wherever I look, I see the black ruins of my life, here, where I’ve spent so many years, wasted them, destroyed them totally.” You won’t find a new country, won’t find another shore. This city will always pursue you. You’ll walk the same streets, grow old in the same neighborhoods, turn gray in these same houses. You’ll always end up in this city. Don’t hope for things elsewhere: there’s no ship for you, there’s no road. Now that you’ve wasted your life here, in this small corner, you’ve destroyed it everywhere in the world. -C. P. Cavafy
Thank you for this. Since I was a child Cavafy's "Ithaka" has always been my favorite poem....I had no idea that he wrote this. Now as an adult I understand that so much of why Re: Zero resonates with me has to do with the experience of growing up in a foreign land as a Greek boy. Cavafy understood this, and now so do I.
Damn. I being watched this anime about 5 days ago and went right into the second season that's currently airing. I enjoyed it so much and it became one of my favourites, but for some reason when I kept thinking about why exactly did this series affect me to much and left a huge impression on me I ended up unable to find the reason why. But now hearing you talk about how it was aimed at otakus and their deepest fears explains a lot. The more I watched Subaru and learned about his past life the more I felt connected and related to him so bad. As we saw in anime, whenever Emilia dies world got destroyed by Puck. If Subaru dies >> He can't save Emilia >> Puck destroyes the world... Start over again
Just something that was cut from the anime. Do you remember that royal candidate with orange hair and red clothes that thinks the world works in her favor and her Knight that only wears a helmet? When Subaru met he for the second time and was in the carriage with them that was headed to the castle a part of the conversation they had was cut. It was kept in the Novels and manga but not in the anime and it is quite important. Al (The Knight) asked Subaru if he was also summoned here from Japan. Subaru was completely in shock from that question. Then Priscilla (the candidate) tells Subaru that it seems he is also from beyond the Great Waterfall. Subaru then asks her what is this Great Waterfall. She replies by saying: At the edge of the world, there exists the Great Waterfall. Near the great Waterfall is the place where Satella is sealed and the Dragon guards that place. There is a legend that says, beyond the Great Waterfall lies another world. There has been no person from this side to cross to the other side, but a lot of people have claimed to have crossed from the other side to this one. They are obviously lying, but You and Al are clearly different than the rest.
I thought Season 1 was a masterpiece too. However, I DID fear that Re:Zero had run out of things to really say about Subaru and his archetype and I genuinely feared that Re:Zero could never top an episode like 15 or 18 ever again.....Boy was I wrong! As early as episode 4 of season 2 Re: Zero has once again proven that it's far from done and even 4 years later it continues to surprise and impress me in ways I never thought possible. This show really IS a masterpiece and I can't wait to see where it goes from here. 2020 is really kind of sucking and the future of the world is looking more and more bleak by the day, but Re: Zero is here to remind me that the world is still a beautiful place, people are still amazing, and it really is good to be alive!
I honestly really hope that in the far future, re zero will be recognized as a maserpiece. Cause I see a lot of people still call the show bad even after watching this video. It kinda shows how hard it is to understand this show for many people which Is I think the reason why people don't like it

What really had the show, and Subaru earn my respect was the "I love Emilia" line. Guy stuck with his feelings even if Emilia would try pushing him away, or ignoring him.
I think Subaru loves Emilia, but Rem is number 2 in his heart now. And who can’t blame him? After that speech in ep18... I think it is a harem ending mentality thing. Personally it’s a turn off for me, but I can respect that cough*MushokuTensei*cough

Personally I'm of the opinion that Beatrice is best girl, but Emilia is second for me. The main advantage she gets is arc 4, where a giant part of the plot is based around her, while Rem is out of the picture. She also gets a decent bit of time in arc 5 from what I've read so far.

Subaru: I choose to love Emilia, beacuse I promise to never let her diea again The Witch: Are you sure about that? The rem fans: you disgust me The Emilia fans: Hell yeah! Emilia: What do you mean again?
god okay so i just finished season 1 (spoiler warning lol) and DEAR GOD THE LAST SCENE IN THE DIRECTOR'S CUT GAVE ME LITERAL CHILLS3&,&;!3& but i digress; i love rem. i always thought re:zero was going to be fanservice galore what with everyone hyping rem for so long? but like. god it's genuinely just so good. i've seen people criticize rem and subaru's relationship/friendship and !! it really bugs me. because as much of a wakeup call as subaru's self-hatred rant was, it also just showed how crucial it is to have forgiveness in your life. i love rem because she's so resilient and strong; despite knowing how awful subaru appears to have become and knowing how she'll never get that dream life with him, she has the fortitude to grant subaru the forgiveness he fails to give himself. she pulls him off the ledge of giving up, tells him why she loves him, and LITERALLY SHOWS SUBARU HOW TO LOVE. i don't know how to emphasize how hard it hit for me when subaru declared that for every bad thing emelia says about herself, he'd say two thousand. because that's what rem did for him. and that's what subaru wants to do for emelia. no expectations, no hidden motives. just the knowledge and comfort that comes with knowing you're loved, knowing you're worthy of love, and knowing that someone is by your side. and i mean. i really emphasize this enough either but rem did not have to do any of that. she didn't have to stay by subaru's side, even if she loved him. yes, i hate that she would sacrifice herself for him because i just. i hate that sorry. BUT. her devotion doesn't mean a damn thing to me because all that episode 18 showed me was that rem understood subaru. she looked at the man she loved, this young idiot who is infatuated (and in love with-- there's a difference) with another woman. she looked at subaru in his most pathetic state and taught him what love was. i just can't get over how much i love rem for doing that. and then subaru, ofc, states the obvious about how he loves emelia. and that was subaru telling rem he loves her too. he loves emelia and it's obvious and he won't try to manipulate rem anymore so he tells the truth. and rem accepts it. she was strong enough to reject the life of her dreams and she's strong enough in that moment to understand that the life she has now is too beautiful to leave behind, even if her love is unrequited. idk if this in coherent in any way, i just wanted to yell somewhere that rem taught subaru to love and that... was sick. lol
"It is a full 3 course meal, plus salad and dessert" But a 3 course meal includes dessert, or are you talking about a 5 course meal which is soup, salad, appetizer, entre and dessert, but then are you substituting soup with another dessert? Is your 3 course meal soup, appetizer and entre? I'm suppose to be enjoying your analysis but I'm spending precious moments debating terminology of food. What have you done to me Geoff?
Re:Zero is honestly one of if not my favourite Anime's of all time, getting to rewatch it with the "New Edition" hour long episodes is awesome :D Cant wait for season 2
I Love Everything which part; my favourite Anime, the New edition or being hyped for season 2? All 3 are true, used to review Re:Zero when it was airing and I said it back then. However if your saying Re:Zero isn’t that great, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Spoiler for season 2: subaru dies I know it's a lot to take in
Omar Sukar what! How could they kill the main character?
The real spoiler is that he _almost_ dies...
Goddammit! I was trying to go into it without knowing anything! You ruined it for me!
Haha nice
NOOOOOOOOOO NOT SUBARU!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely love the way Subaru grows from someone that sees himself as the “protagonist” of this world and is therefore entitled to everything he wants, to someone that accepts that he isn’t even an important person in this world but still strives to do what he can to protect the ones he cared for.
INDEED
Almost as if hes the embodiment of Pride or something /shrug
But he is indeed an important person as far as everything is concerned, we wouldn't have the show if he wasn't.
"It's an unexpectedly happy ending."

how? The love interest was boring, I never knew what Subaru's overall goal was or what he was fighting for (don't say the girl as that's a subplot).
TheCoffeeNut711 idk maybe a happy ending where him and all his friends don’t die would be nice

@@traderjay2261 My man, you might suck. Better get that checked out. If you think that was creepy then I can only assume you are a kid under 17, at least mentally.
I've seen a lot of people complaining about subaru being an idiot
He actually sort of isn't.

Subaru.... who's rem?
Strong Pker Oh you know, just the best girl
that part was always painful to watch, but it makes subaru's later development both in himself and in his friendship with those who witnessed his worst (particularly julius) so much more satisfying
He nor any person would reset time just because they acted like a moron for a day, he is afraid to die and him acting emberising for a day isn't enguhe of a reson for him to reset (not to mention that he never knows how far back he will go)
Trauma doesn't disapear nor do people get used to it, he can fix people geting killed, how does that suddenly change his trauma, how does that suddenly change that he has to watch people he cares about die time and time again?
Him commiting suicide on any slight inconviniance isn't what he as a character wants to do nor is it something that any person would do.
The resets do not get rid of any tension that is builds up as simply reseting is never enguhe to fix everything nor to overcome his oposition
@@justincain2702 Overall very long and wrong comment on your side.
TL:DR Reseting because someone you care about got killed and you yourself are about to die isn't the same as reseting because you acted like a moron one day, they are different situations and not at all comparable
Just because you died once doesn't mean that you aren't afraid or that you want to die again
Trauma is a real issues for people, you don't get over it no matter how in much in control you might be.
Just because you see someone you care about get killed a few times doesn't suddenly make it normal nor less traumatizing
Reseting by killing himself is logical (if the situation demands it) and it doesn't suddenly get rid of his problems, the tension is still there.
Overall preety bad and flawed arguments
As someone who is dealing with depression and anxiety and who feels somewhat like subaru did, this anime and subaru's personal journey specifically spoke to me on a level that no other show has even gotten close to.

In other words the Groundhog Day of anime.
@@kevinliu5060 Same for me too
Henry couldn’t have agreed more. I thought I was the only one who thought and believed this.
That stemmed from his not realizing his own limitations, because he constantly feels that acknowledging any needs/desires/merits he may have is just wrong, which is part of his crippling depression.
i agree with your stuff
@@kyokurasakura5193 Thank you.
Yes. Also we see a lot more of the behavior caused by his depression in the light novel. There he also selfharms in some instances even before all of his death cycles. So he was already pretty messed up even before being summoned to that world.

It's true though, I came to love the anime after rewatching it, it gave me a deeper understanding of the characters. 4 rewatches since 2016 and I still get emotional and invested in scenes. Rem executing Subaru always makes me cry.
It's hard to re watch it

*All I gotta say is the actors in Re:Zero are F*CKING GOLD!!!*

Rei Takahashi
Sure there is more beneath the surface, but its hard to look and find it when the initial presentation turns you off so much.
episode 18 stands out to me personally more than most media in my life period, just based on how relatable and gut-wrenching it is, that and seeing Rem cry always gets me
In my opinion, ep 18 is very popular and well praised, most people hate is the episode subaru embarrassed emilia and had a fight with her.
I loved episode 18 , I was not expecting to start tearing ngl but I enjoyed how much emotion it brought out of me 😂
Interesting thing is that I can remember many characters from re:zero, as he just said here.

Reinhardt means strong Advisor(which is exactly his job in the story, the strongest advisor in the entire world for Felt)

**Spoilers**
I watched this after seeing this video title, and decided to finish the anime and then come to this video.
I could have done anything, but i never did a thing."
I paused the anime.
I had it for a year or two and let myself slip, but after watching that one scene it was as if I woke up again.
this is what I mean by learning about our own life through other's art.
Probably skipping the part where you're probably a simp too :p
I cried at that episode. There were some episodes that gave me watery eyes but that shit was just 👌 10/10 honestly one of the best dialogues I heard in anime damn.
So how's going? I bet you stopped working out and study and now you are still the same loser. Cuz yeah i'm like you :(
@@falkon9626 Nah, I'm working out and adding more stuff slowly. Started skipping rope every day and doing a few workouts at home. Been stood down due to the rona so i have plenty of time to work out. Study will come later, I have a ton of debt i need to pay off before going into student debt...
You'll get there mate, it just takes a catalyst. Being completely honest, re:zero wasn't that catalyst for me even though i make it sound like it was here. Being stood down from my job, whilst also coming extremely close to catching the virus due to my workplace having over 20 cases, was what spurred me to make small positive steps towards my goals.
You don't have to just shift everything in one fell swoop, otherwise you just set yourself up to go into withdrawal from everything you've been used to for years, fail and go back into old habits.
One step at a time, one thing. Drink too much beer? Cut down a little. Eat unhealthy every meal? Change 1 meal a day to a healthy one, rather than denying your body everything it's been used to for years all at once. Ease into things.
But also, don't feel like shit just cause you do indulge. Make the changes you want to make, because you want to. Not because you feel you need to. If your health is in a critical state, then maybe start making changes now, but otherwise enjoy life in whatever way you want and don't feel ashamed about it. Be confident in the choices you make and you'll be alright.

Than i don't even dare imagine what season 2(Arc 4) will achieve
@Ákos M. Arc 6 looks interesting, Ima speed up my reading and get to Arc 6 (Im at Arc 5 atm)
@Ákos M. I disagree with it being mediocre.
If I had to rate the arcs, I would say:
Arcs 1-3 (first season of the anime): 8/10
First cour Arc 4: 7.5/10
Second cour Arc 4: 1000000000/10
I'm currently reading arc 5 almost finishing it, and I know the plot of Arc 6.
Fuck, I'd call it even better than aot season 4.
it will achieve your tears
isnt arc 4 considered part of the prologue too?

My first viewing, I had one spoiler that should of taken all the edge off the threats, but I was "one the edge of my seat" as it were.

They hated Subaru and said he deserve to die repeatedly. Apparently people want him to loop so many times just to train and called him a coward because he's afraid to die despite his powers.

~where he kills himself upon finding rem dead, only to find he was too late, and she had already died too late for him to save using his abilities.

To my surprise, I enjoyed it. After getting slammed in the face so many other isekai trash, this felt like a breath of fresh air. Subaru’s conversation with Rem was so relatable that it hurts, and Beatrice’s demise in the 2nd season left me in tears. @@herrikudo In my comment, I didn't go into the contents of what he said, only how he appears when he barges into the room.
But well, going into that content:
Speaking in a derogatory manner about everyone other than him. Disregarding the feelings of Emilia, acting as if she couldn't act on her own, proclaiming himself as Emilia's knight, when, at this point in time, she doesn't regard him as one. Insulting all the royal knights by disregarding their positions as just some family inherited stuff without any merit. He's making himself out to be a super relevant and important person, despite the fact that he isn't (well, he is, but not in the way he pretends to be)
With his actions he not only emotionally hurts Emilia, he's also detrimental to her standing as a royal candidate.
So yes, he said plenty of wrong stuff.
Don't get me wrong, Subaru is imo an incredibly great written character, but also an inherently flawed person, and this scene perfectly shows this.

Any lesser isekai anime would have *allowed* Subaru to rewind his talk with Emilia but the fact that it didn't? Major respect and it truly shows that the anime was going for a message, even if plenty missed it at the halfway point
Definitely needed this video, major thanks for making it!
@@herrikudo Since when is love supposed to make sense?
@@herrikudo If Emilia doesn't have to fall for Subaru just because he "has done everything for her", then Subaru doesn't have to fall for Rem for the exact same reason.
The series makes it really clear.
Just wait until you see what else he doesn't get to rewind on next season.... No spoilers.
Stop making 40 minute videos that are so good that it feels like no time is passing at all. They are really really good videos.

I think this old poem is relevant here:
You said: “I’ll go to another country, go to another shore,
find another city better than this one.
Whatever I try to do is fated to turn out wrong
and my heart lies buried like something dead.
How long can I let my mind moulder in this place?
Wherever I turn, wherever I look,
I see the black ruins of my life, here,
where I’ve spent so many years, wasted them, destroyed them totally.”
You won’t find a new country, won’t find another shore.
This city will always pursue you.
You’ll walk the same streets, grow old
in the same neighborhoods, turn gray in these same houses.
You’ll always end up in this city. Don’t hope for things elsewhere:
there’s no ship for you, there’s no road.
Now that you’ve wasted your life here, in this small corner,
you’ve destroyed it everywhere in the world.

Which we'll see in season 2.
As we saw in anime, whenever Emilia dies world got destroyed by Puck. If Subaru dies >> He can't save Emilia >> Puck destroyes the world... Start over again
Louro Hired no the world did get destroyed look up what would of happened if he left with best girl
Louro Hired actually Puck gets mauled constantly by Reinhardt who is stronger than him.
She replies by saying:
At the edge of the world, there exists the Great Waterfall.
I honestly really hope that in the far future, re zero will be recognized as a maserpiece. Cause I see a lot of people still call the show bad even after watching this video.

BUT. her devotion doesn't mean a damn thing to me because all that episode 18 showed me was that rem understood subaru. she looked at the man she loved, this young idiot who is infatuated (and in love with-- there's a difference) with another woman. she looked at subaru in his most pathetic state and taught him what love was. i just can't get over how much i love rem for doing that. and then subaru, ofc, states the obvious about how he loves emelia. and that was subaru telling rem he loves her too. he loves emelia and it's obvious and he won't try to manipulate rem anymore so he tells the truth. and rem accepts it. she was strong enough to reject the life of her dreams and she's strong enough in that moment to understand that the life she has now is too beautiful to leave behind, even if her love is unrequited. idk if this in coherent in any way, i just wanted to yell somewhere that rem taught subaru to love and that... was sick. lol
