Despite its flop in America, the film was very successful in Japan. It's even been suggested that the design of "The Legend of Zelda" video games was inspired by this film.
Don't forget Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent's various Goons that are almost certainly the analogues which the Moblins, Stalfos, and Zoras were inspired by!
Over the past few years, it seems like Disney have realised that a fandom for this film exists and has released some merch for it. In 2015, they released a limited edition 30th anniversary pin of the Horned King. I've got that pin and it is a really nice looking pin. Also, a few years ago, Disney released a limited line of DVD re-releases with a slipcover that has a picture of the villain on it in the UK and The Black Cauldron was included in this collection.
The author of the books, Lloyd Alexander, actually really liked the Movie because "it was totally unlike my story, but had the spirit." So he may have been with you on that accuracy thing Breadsword.
That's usually what I look for in an adaptation as a reader. Not a "This isn't like the book! waaah!" But more if it captured the spirit of the source material in tone and theme.
That's why middle of the road adaptations leave a bad taste in most mouths, like Death Note: Netflix greenlit this shit edition. It didn't hold the spirit of the manga or anime, none of the characters had the same feel or proper motivations, and the plot was super convoluted. It wasn't a good adaptation of the original story. But even then, it didn't capture the spirit. It wasn't the world as a chessboard in a game played by two geniuses on their individual paths to projecting their version of justice. It was about a dumbass who didn't even want to become a harbinger of death and justice. Had they changed the actual plot, but kept it as tight and smart as the original, we'd probably love the writers for making a good movie.The diehard fans of the original (or maybe the complete opposite) wouldn't like that it didn't have the same plot, but if it was done well, it wouldn't have mattered. Here, as long as an adaptation gets the spirit right, the gloominess of the world, the dread brought by the evils within, and the hero rising to bring light, and the story is good, we'll love it as an adaptation.
It's kinda like Howl's Moving Castle; vastly different, but keeping the tone and, as you said, spirit of the original. When I see an adaptation, I expect changes and am excited to see if they keep to the spirit and improve upon the story. Less like the piece of shit Percy Jackson Films(which change so much that it's barely recognizable) and more like Alita: Battle Angel(where they establish things that didn't come until much later in the original story and format then so the new story fliws better.)

Before I passed out, what I saw was a long passage of the movie where he audibly describes what is happening in the movie, with annoying bullshit flittering to slightly obscure the footage. The essay had ground to a halt and useful information came to an end. He stopped his review and was just doing play by play. Clearly not "fair use". Disney was right to file a claim with RUclips. And should again.
@@MickDansforth I disagree, I think the context of the scenes was important to proving the points of the video essay. Understanding what was going on in them helped put the essay into context. But then again, the ambiguity of fair use is why businesses are able to claim so many videos on youtube.
@@GaryFromLiberty Apparently you watched longer than I did. For at least 7 minutes after the anime girls appear on screen he is just giving a play by play and the essay stopped dead. That is far too long to go without making a point.
TWELVE MINUTES OF COMPLETED ANIMATION -- GONE? For the unaware, at 12 frames per second (standard for traditional animation), that means 8640 completed, hand drawn images, with all the sounds synced up and all the effects baked in, were just.... gone. If this film was done at 24 frames per second, or had sequences of 24 mixed in, that could be almost double the number! I can't imagine that.
Neerrd! Lol nah, it's actually party cool that you know that. So much time, effort, and talent wasted! They should have saved it, then (10?)years later released the uncut (and unrated?) version. That way at least the work is out there.
It legitimately upsets me, like very deeply, how eviscerated this film is. It angers me because even without this video essay, watching the film by itself you can pick out how disjointed and bizarre the plot it, how the characters seem to be hollow shells when they weren't in the original cut, and the huge potential that this movie had. I think what irritates me the most is that even Walt himself complained that he had branded his animation so successfully, that he was only allowed in the court of public opinion to make light-hearted fairy tales and nothing else. While watching To Kill a Mockingbird, Walt was quoted as saying "That's the kind of movie I wish I could make!" Even in the early films, you can see Walt trying to push the boundaries set for them. This movie comes along after a massive slump after Walt's death, and it was a golden opportunity to not only reignite the public passion for Disney, but also kindof redirect what Disney animation was about. The animation could still be amazing, the plot and characters memorable, but the movie could appeal to more people than just children and annoying helicopter parents. The first rated-R Disney film? That sounds great! And anyone who says "Disney would've hated The Black Cauldron's original form," I completely disagree. Remember, even Walt himself wanted to branch out and make more mature material. But then dumb parents whined that it was too violent, and this movie gets destroyed in editing, by some guy who has no idea how animation works and has not earned the respect of Disney's animators to begin with, and completely rips it to shreds. It's so incredibly disappointing. This alone is why we still need 2-D animators. I don't think anyone would be upset if all that deleted content was reanimated back into this film. Any of it that is "lost," just have animators redraw it and match it to the film. Other than "money" and "we don't care," there is really no logical reason why this shouldn't happen.
It's not just overreacting puritan parents of yesteryears... you also have to contend with SJW / feminist jerkweeds of today. This kind of Western animated movie was just never gonna succeed unless it was INDEPEDENTLY funded. But major Hollywood studios always want that widest demographic reach for their movies... the PG / PG-13 range. It's only in Japan and partailly in Europe where you see mature 2D animated movies reach full potential. But in America... it's NEVER gonna be the thing.
I guess it make sense why "animation is ONLY for kids" stigma is one of the BIGGEST flaws of what animation is all about. I would like to see the Disney animated adaptation to _To Kill The Mockingbird._ Too bad that's not going to happen since parents weren't accepted about the "maturity" towards kids because they don't want to expose the truth about what reality looks like until they grow up without any knowledge of how the real world works and the parents want to keep their kids out of it to make sure they are "safe" which it's ironically a big risk to their mental state of mind and once the children grew up without maturity, they become hostile and weak. Children are people too -- they are human beings just like all of us. They need to learn more about what reality is all about before they need to grow up and enter the real world.
I completely agree with your statement. I always said that there may be individuals at Disney or in the field of animation in general willing to push the boundaries and create an array of diverse content but it is the people in charge who are vehemently against it. We ill never get another show like Avatar the last air bender because people underestimate the intelligence of children and we wont get movies like what the Black Cauldron should have been or Treasure Planet because either the powers at be dont want it to exist or overactive drama queen parents.
Is it too late to re-release the black cauldron, but with all the original scenes, dialogue, and animations that were cut out and changed? That would honestly be really awesome. I think it needs to be done.
@@elissabowdove2121 I doubt a full theatrical, or Even DVD/BD release would happen, but if Disney released the original cut (if it still exists) on Disney plus, God knows I would do everything I could to watch it and pay for it, even when there are no plans to release the service on Latin America on the near future
Disney as it stands now will NEVER do it. In recent years Disney has strayed even farther somehow from what they were. There's no heart in it anymore and it's all cash grabs. The last animated film Disney people made (not just Disney owned) was Moana and even though I think it was a fantastic film it did not take new leaps like Disney used to. With the last few and next few years all being live action remakes of movies that already made millions I don't see this direction changing any time soon.
I bet this is super difficult to do with older animated films - it makes me wonder if they actually shot completed scenes for the cut parts, or just animatics. The way the story is told, it sounds like there should be reels of stuff hiding somewhere begging for a release. However, what I know about older animation practices, I doubt this is true. It seems like this was a fairly nonstandard production though, I’d love to see an ‘unrated’ version!

Cutting 12 minutes of hand drawn frames of animation is a crime against humanity, on par with cancelling a critically acclaimed cartoon series after only, if not even, 1 season. If the cuts still exist, I would pay full price for a full release or Blu-ray of the uncut movie, even though I have only been made aware of this movie's existence 2 hours ago. I'm a sucker for dark fantasy, and this film has my full attention. #ReleaseTheCut #FleshMelting

I grew up believing that The Black Cauldron, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet were awesome movies. It was not until I was nearly an adult that I was made privy to the realization of how ashamed of these films Disney is... despite them being their most creative and mature films. All of them had a unique aesthetic that allowed these films to stand out. You can never confuse a scene from any of these movies with the other Disney films or the various dime bin knockoffs that came out along side them. You see a shot of Treasure Planet, you know you are in the world of Treasure Planet. You see a shot from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, you know exactly what film you are watching. And the same goes for The Black Cauldron. I mean, for me personally, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, Tarzan, The Lion King, etc... are the only "Disney Renaissance" era films I actually can still enjoy. I never liked any of the older ones and don't care too much for the new CGI ones... I wanted to like the Princess and The Frog... but they ruined that movie for me... pretty thoroughly.... In short, I would really like to see Disney return to *hand drawn* 2D films, perhaps with a mix of CGI in the near future... I don't mind the CGI ones( I also love Toy Story and the Incredibles), just think that their strength and the uniqueness of their art styles lays more with hand drawn films... the Deep Canvas Animation style should have been the direction Disney chose to go with... just my two cents...
wιѕegυy The only real problem with Atlantis: The Lost Empire was that when we actually got to Atlantis, we had to go through so many different beats and plot points at the same time, that it really feels like the movie was meant to be a two-parter story. The first film introducing us to the characters and gaining sympathy for them, even the villains, and have it end with getting to Atlantis. With a second film showing more of Atlantean culture and everything else. The film was far less story driven, and far more character driven. And watching the film, especially the first act and a half, the character interactions are what make it great.
wιѕegυy I used to only somewhat like hunchback but as an adult it and beauty and the beast are two of my favorite Disney movies from their absolutely gorgeous visuals to their perfect soundtracks
@@cretinouscretin9677 If you've seen the making of footage for Atlantis, that's not far off. The production team got so caught up in the journey _to_ Atlantis that they made far too much of it and were forced to cut a _lot_.
i still remember going to see treasure planet at the cinema. loved it. its shame disney completely stopped these cartoon movies to replace them with 3d animation. 3d animation is good, i couldnt imagine toy story without it for example, but i think its a shame that style completely died out.
THe fact that the animation team had to suffer so much through this is truly awful. This film, despite its short and "simple" premise, is one of my favorite works because of how many different techniques are used int eh animation, as well as the beautiful backgrounds and the effort put into movement for characters and clothing. The fact that their new "bosses" were making such ludicrous demands is truly disheartening.
This movie was a visual breakthrough for disney because it was(as far as I know) THE FIRST hand drawn film by Walt Disney Animation Studios to integrate cgi into the has drawn animation
I am Welsh and Welsh is my first language. I watched this when I was a kid and I had no idea it was Welsh because of course they got voice actors who couldn’t pronounce the Welsh names. So sad considering this is the closest ‘The Mabinogion’ will ever get to having a mainstream film adaption. The source material for this film, The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander was heavily inspired by them. ‘Prydain’ is LITERALLY the Welsh word for ‘Britain’. God. So sad how Welsh mythology in general is either forgotten about or is amalgamated into being ‘Arthurian’ legends so England can claim them too. 🙄 I hate it.
I didn't know Prydain means Britain. I never knew how the names and words should be pronounced, but this gives a clue. I've never seen the movie, only read the books. I'll see it if I ever have a chance.
Growing up, I listened to folklore and tales of magic and mischief from my Cymraes grandmother (speaker of Welsh and Gaelic (Scot))...the first really amazing artifact I remember from her as a kid was a carved wooden wizard named "Gwilliam." I'd say the world in general is too, if I'm getting the phrase right, "chwit-chwat" to fully appreciate the varied rich awesome flavors of all the Welsh mythos. Instead of remaking movies like Beauty and the Beast or Lion King that were successful and worked perfectly for animation, Disney should honestly remake their less successful features that would lend well to live action...like Black Cauldron. And Atlantis and Treasure Planet!!!
Luna Pyrope - it’s so sad to see Disney turn it’s head from its hand drawn animation and run headlong into bland remakes. Though I do think those films would be good live action, the problem is that Disney is playing it super safe and won’t even touch those I bet.
Yeah, they are remaking their biggest hits because they know it will draw a crowd and make $$$. IMO, the best live action Disney movies (PotC: Curse of the Black Pearl, TRON Legacy) were made with little oversight from Disney itself. The tighter control they take over production, the more monotonous the result. Which gives me hope that maybe they'll let a smaller creative team remake these films as throwaways after the big ones have all been done, and that team will be able to actually do them justice.
@@sydb.9016 I'm cautiously optimistic. It's not a musical, so it should be pretty easy to adapt, but I'm worried they'll flatten the world. It's been a while since the big Steampunk boom, and some of the alien designs are "harder" since they move away from being hominid. Sure, Disney has the money, but they're not brave enough to take the leap on a remake of a movie that underperformed. I sincerely doubt they'll make it as close a remake as their other cash grabs.

I would kill for a Road to El Dorado video! I read a lot into the production history some time ago and their original plan sounds fascinating. It reminded me a lot of a similar history and intent to that of Kingdom of the Sun, which became The Emperor's New Groove. With TRtED coming out on Blu-ray next month it would be perfect time to celebrate it.
The Black Cauldron didn't almost kill Disney, Katsinberg did. By trying to suppress the full potential of this movie and make it another "Disney kids film,"Katsinberg went against everything the Disney company was. Every Golden age Disney movie was a masterpiece because it pushed boundaries and brought something new to animation. Disney created movies that were so intense in visuals,music and tone that he could control the exact emotion that he wanted the audience to have scene by scene. For Katsinberg to no only completely missunderstand this key to Disney movies,but to ignor it and generalize the movies to make a money making formula, clearly shows his short comings as a Disney leader. Thank goodness The Black Cauldron out survived him, even though it could never be what it once was.
@@darkfyraproductions7958 Although that is true, most remakes now are live action. Remaking The black cauldron now would make the movie: 1. Possibly be like every other gritty,dark and edgy Disney movie. 2. Be live action, therefore not being the first R Disney movie. On top of that, the damage has already been done. With the way the company is now there is no way they would allow an R rated animated, or in this case CGI, Disney movie. And even if they did make an R rated Black cauldron they would need to find the old scenes that were cut if they hadn't already been lost to time.

Yes you could argue that this is a cult classic and if alot of people show interest in a remake, then they may remake it. However, this is a black list film, the film that the Disney company, mostly you know who, loves to be remembered as the Disney film that almost killed the company. In all honesty this movie probably won't and shouldn't be remade by the Disney company.
The weird part of is was that he should have known better. The LOTR reading/watching, Led Zeppelin listening, D&D playing teenagers of the late 70s and early 80s were the original target audience. And PG-13 wasn't even a thing yet. I don't know if it was to distance themselves from what Bakshi was doing at the time, or trying to desperately bandaid their market share after the also spooky Secret of NIMH after they missed the first major fantasy window or what. But it reeks of compromise. I was one of the people on the petitions back in the 90s to release it on home video, because I saw it as a kid (and had the book record thing, which is obviously what I listened to more than I ever watched the movie as a kid) and I did greatly love it. But as an adult, you can just see the holes where someone that we KNOW in this day and age was a ruthless asshole caused too much compromise to happen...but we can shove some of that blame on Eisner as well. Remember it was during this movie's production that he infamously said ""We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. To make money is our only objective."

Yeah dude, I fucking love these videos. BREADSWORD was such a random find. I saw it when the first video like this was posted. The quality is insane, especially when it was only like 2-3 videos on the channel. Reminds me of the Cosmonaught Variety Hour channel, but better tbh.
Could you imagine if this movie had been left intact and defined Disney for the next 30 years as opposed to the Little Mermaid? What would Disney be today if they had broken their animated story mold nearly two decades early? Sure there are hints of that in the climax of the "Great Mouse Detective" but I've thought for years that the Black Cauldron was a terribly underrated Disney film and that it was always just a few steps away from being brilliant. It's nice to hear another voice that followed the breadcrumbs left by the film.
The Great Mouse Detective was my favorite (after Hercules) growing up. It had so much. If I had seen The Black Cauldron as I child I would have been obsesssed.
So you want the alternate universe where Disney unrelentingly release violent animation, as opposed to the run of Little Mermaid/Beauty/Aladin/LionKing? Well the motion picture division would have driven themselves quite quickly into bankruptcy!
My uncle was an animator for Disney, and he was involved in The Black Cauldron. The Horned King is fucking amazing. There were mis-steps yes, but I think it was a beautifully brilliant, creepy movie that was underrated. And not just because of the family significance.
The story of Eisner's coup and Katzenberg storming the editing room really brings to mind the anecdotes David Lynch has often repeated about the production of the Elephant Man, and how Mel Brooks (yes, that Mel Brooks) was perhaps the best producer he's ever worked with. Such as not only getting Lynch the final cut anyway despite it not being in his original contract, but also one occasion in which Brooks was showing a work print of the film to Paramount executives, who immediately started requesting alterations to the film and to whom Brooks replied: "We are involved in a business venture. We screened the film for you, to bring you up to date as to the status of that venture. Do not misconstrue this as our soliciting the input of raging primitives." Needless to say, given that Lynch getting the final cut was already mentioned, Brooks fought off all the attempts to change the film.
To be fair, it's all automated. It's done by a computer, presumably used to prevent piracy. But on the other hand, they'll copyclaim your video for 11 seconds of footage.
Cycada Acolyte Katzenberg wasn't involved with that. Also Katzenberg presided over Disney Animation during its Renaissance so it's hard to call him a hack. He just took one look at The Black Cauldron, saw it didn't belong with "the Disney Brand" and immediately despised it. He's a hell of a businessman but he really doesn't have an artistic bone in his body.

Do we know if the cut clips have been lost or not? I feel like if enough people united and groveled we could get Disney to release a remastered version of the film. Probably will never happen, but I really want it to.
Thomas Morris - Disney just wants to keep its dirty financials out of the investor’s eye and pretend they never happened, even if their critically acclaimed, wonderfully made, or culturally significant. It’s about the bottom line for them now. One only has to notice how seldom they’ll even put The Black Cauldron or even Treasure Planet out on DVD compared to The Little Mermaid or even The Great Mouse Detective. I doubt they’ll ever give the idea a glance, especially since they’ve gotten rid of their hand drawn animation department basically, and said “Live Action’s the way to go! Bring on the remakes! And also sequels no one wanted and Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland rip offs!”
Alpyki 258 agreed. Also consider how much easier it is to get pirated copies of exactly these commercial flop masterpieces than the more generic renaissance masterpieces. I watched The Black Cauldron for the first time for free back in the years when yt didn't have AI powered copyright claims, & even downloaded it for free years later, & yet I could never find The Little Mermaid's exquisite special edition version online, which I have bought on CD. The Bottom Line is the last word.
Back when I was a teenager, I thought that the Black Cauldron was an inspiration for the Legend of Zelda series. Mostly because of how the Green tunic design of the boy and the blonde haired design of the girl. People tell me that Peter Pan was the inspiration for the Legend of Zelda series, but I personally think the Black Cauldron is a bit of a stronger inspiration for the Legend of Zelda series. Especially how the film was made during the early 1980s making this a more recent inspiration of the video game series that was made around the right time that Miyamoto and others may have seen at the cinema in Kyoto when coming up with ideas for the Famicom games.
My older brother first showed me this film when I was 19. Once he finally realized that while it was a huge part of his childhood, I was barely walking when it came out. The only part of this amazing film that I don’t like, is the fact that my childhood was empty of it . . . They failed, fought, bickered and tantrummed the Black Cauldron into the most perfect animated film I have ever seen. From childhood to adulthood, this movie speaks to you and takes you away to a magical world of fantasy, because it is so accidentally real in its relationships. I rarely watch any RUclips video longer than 20 minutes, unless it’s from a creator I follow and greatly enjoy. I didn’t realize this was an hour long until I was 5 minutes into. And I’m glad I didn’t notice the run time! This is, at the same time, the single best Black Cauldron history, breakdown, explanation and sales pitch!! I’m subscribing and sharing like Hel!! Don’t ever stop making long, in-depth, impassioned videos like this!!

I laughed a good 5 minutes after pausing them since their appearance was in total contrast to the seriousness of the tone that BREADSWORD was speaking in and the movie was showing.
I remember watching this movie when I was very, very little at my cousin's house, maybe 6 years old. I was terrified but I loved every second of what I saw and that initial reaction has never changed, the horned king is just as terrifying as when I was little and the triumph over him (Especially his death scene) still sends shivers down my spine. That said I didn't know this movie was based off a book series but I desperately want to read it.
I, for one, actually want the Horned King to make more appearances at Disney. He's one of my favorite Disney Villains, and I could see him being used in the Halloween show at Disney World, using the Black Cauldron to summon fireworks in the sky.

The Horned King is one of the greatest villains Disney ever made; he doesn't break into song, he wasn't designed to be clumsy for comedy's sake, and his goals are as terrifying as his appearance; full world domination and the mass genocide of every living thing on Earth. Well there are ways to avoid copyright problems changing the pitch of the audio, putting the video in a small box with a background, flipping the video, ect. Doing that helps keep the bots from picking up something that might be copyrighted. It's done alot with anime
I REALLY wish there was an unedited version of this movie available, holy SHIT Those images of the men decaying were horrifying even to me, who is as old as this movie is! I cackled imagining all the parents storming out with their kids! As someone who has studied the various stages of decay a body can go through depending on what brings about that destruction, that shit was pretty accurate. Some artists had to do some morbid homework.

Great discussion, though I don't understand why you keep calling Welsh characters as Gaels, and claim that Gaels once lived across much of western Europe. Gaels live in Scotland, Ireland, Man, and probably formally lived in Galicia and other parts of Spain. The rest of the Celtic World - including Scotland until the Gaels conquered it - was Brythonic (Cymry) and/or Gaulish Celtic. Here's one shortcut - if it uses Ps or Bs where you'd think it would you Cs, you're dealing with the Brythons, not the Gaels. They're closely related but not the same thing, and giving all the credit to the Irish is distinctly anti-Welsh when your subject matter is the most beloved modern fantasy take on the Welsh cycles of myth and legend known as the Mabinogion. Again, great video. I thoughly enjoyed it. But if you love a subject so much, do a bit more research and/or please don't diminish your subject matter so much. The Welsh get forgotten enough already to be ignored on their most popular submission to the fantasy genre!
I always liked TBC, even though it seemed incomplete in a lot of ways. Now it makes sense. Too bad they couldn't go back and do a director's cut of it.

I loved the books as a kid and the movie was ok in my mind. I wish they'd focused on one book instead of combining the first two books. But after your indepth look into the making of I'm so pissed it never got to truly shine as it's own thing.
I do...They were kind of a joke for awhile there even before this movie came out. A few theme parks, and some somewhat unremarkable movies for the better part of a decade I really don't remember anyone considering high art (that impression has changed once they got into the VHS market). Sleeping Beauty really screwed them financially for nearly 3 decades, and their output post-SB was weaker in my opinion. Especially the decade before The Little Mermaid we were all looking at Don Bluth as the height of animation and Disney as hanging in there on the prestige of their real classics. I recall being strictly unimpressed with The Fox and the Hound and Oliver and Company in particular; as a kid and watching them in theaters. That weird couple of years between Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Beauty and the Beast was really a huge comeback...and a setback for Bluth who never caught back up again. I'd say 1989, they were tied, and then Bluth was left behind in the dust. The fact that their movies started becoming largely toyetic didn't hurt...that Disney Princess collection definitely had them raking it in for awhile there.
The way you described this tragedy of a film was just, phenomenal. I have never heard such a review that beared so much depth and emotion and really just shed light on a film I had only thought about once or twice. You are a brilliant storyteller and I enjoy reviews of underrated films such as this one very highly. Keep up the phenomenal work.

That's why instead of being one movie compiled of bits a pieces of the series it might do the stories better justice to be done in live action over the span of a few movies. So much that could have made the film better was cut because of Katsenburg. If there was away to bring it back for a new audience I would rather it be live action than CGI. Or I guess with minor CGI involved. I love Black Cauldron for the most part its aesthetic. The art style and how it was so wonderfully done for it's time. It lacks however in story and in Character. Since so much was condensed it kind of took away from those aspects. This is a movie that could benefit with a revamp in live action spread out into perhaps 3 movies. Its after all based after the Chronicles of Perdaine Novels.

This is the most beautiful and eloquent analysis of my favourite Disney movie. Amazing job, I can’t thank you enough for bringing to light the beauty and innovation this movie and its artists brought to the world. Though it has honestly bought about a burning desire to see the film as the original artists intended. Disney pay attention to this video instead of copy striking it, dig in the vault and find the original cut. I would pay good money to watch it, and I don’t think I’m alone.
It wasn't just Ireland, they used to celebrate this in Scotland as well. My mum came from a tiny village in Scotland. The kids there didn't trick people but they went round in groups rapping on doors and singing for people (like a slightly less terrible version of caroling). They visited every house in the village and usually only got a handful of raisins for their trouble.

Thank you so much for redeeming a beloved childhood movie. I was 8 when this film was released and I loved it. I went on to read all of the books. I grew up in a time when Disney did not make princess movies (I was 12 when little mermaid came out and already had my first punk rock cd). This movie was always beautiful and exciting to me as a child. I did see it in theaters. The Horn King is the ultimate villian because he is pure evil. Being a child in the 1980s was not rainbows and kittens, AIDS was talked about in schools and on tv a disease we knew would kill us in terrible ways. We still did drills in case Russia launched a nuclear weapons on us and every night it seemed like the news had stories of "satanic" cults molesting and murdering children. This movie did not scare me, I felt inspired, it was a reminder that good can conquer evil that even in the darkest of times there can be light. I know this is a long comment but I wanted to express a very heartfelt thank you for making this. You keep telling stories.
Watching this so I can get my fill before Disney does lmaoooo also, the Pixar Documentary, "The Pixar Story," it gives a short, but great insight as to how much the Pixar team and Disney team hated how corporate Disney handled the move to 3D.
I'd like to see Disney do this as a live action trilogy with the sort of neon and grunge style that this one has. There's so much more skeleton/zombie violence they can get away with since the Pirates franchise, and LotR and such, plus audiences have much more patience now for character development and epic stories without them being crammed into TV-movie length. Hell, I could even see Netflix picking this up and making several seasons from it. I remember loving the books as a kid and being confused as to why the movie was so different, so I can't help but think that they still have plenty of untapped potential for a great visual series in one form or another.

in at 23:03 to say that Elmer Bernstein's score for this film actually makes use of an instrument called an Ondes Martenot, not a musical saw! Musical saws, Ondes Martenots, and theremins all have very similar tones, so it's an easy mistake to make. All 3 instruments were popular around the same time, too, and in fact, the Ondes Martenot was invented the same year the theremin was patented, 1928. Musical saws are played using, well, a saw, and bending the metal while bowing it can change the pitch. Ondes Martenots generate pitch by running a metal ring over a set of vacuum tubes (later transistors), and later integrated a keyboard as well. Theremins are neat because you play them without touching them; two metal antennae control volume and frequency, each, and sense proximity to determine what value to set. Fun fact: the Ondes Martenot is considered one of the first electronic musical instruments!

Over the past few years, it seems like Disney have realised that a fandom for this film exists and has released some merch for it. In 2015, they released a limited edition 30th anniversary pin of the Horned King. I've got that pin and it is a really nice looking pin. Also, a few years ago, Disney released a limited line of DVD re-releases with a slipcover that has a picture of the villain on it in the UK and The Black Cauldron was included in this collection.

The author of the books, Lloyd Alexander, actually really liked the Movie because "it was totally unlike my story, but had the spirit." So he may have been with you on that accuracy thing Breadsword.
That's usually what I look for in an adaptation as a reader. Not a "This isn't like the book! waaah!" But more if it captured the spirit of the source material in tone and theme.
That's why middle of the road adaptations leave a bad taste in most mouths, like Death Note: Netflix greenlit this shit edition. It didn't hold the spirit of the manga or anime, none of the characters had the same feel or proper motivations, and the plot was super convoluted. It wasn't a good adaptation of the original story. But even then, it didn't capture the spirit. It wasn't the world as a chessboard in a game played by two geniuses on their individual paths to projecting their version of justice. It was about a dumbass who didn't even want to become a harbinger of death and justice. Had they changed the actual plot, but kept it as tight and smart as the original, we'd probably love the writers for making a good movie.The diehard fans of the original (or maybe the complete opposite) wouldn't like that it didn't have the same plot, but if it was done well, it wouldn't have mattered.
Here, as long as an adaptation gets the spirit right, the gloominess of the world, the dread brought by the evils within, and the hero rising to bring light, and the story is good, we'll love it as an adaptation.
It's kinda like Howl's Moving Castle; vastly different, but keeping the tone and, as you said, spirit of the original. When I see an adaptation, I expect changes and am excited to see if they keep to the spirit and improve upon the story. Less like the piece of shit Percy Jackson Films(which change so much that it's barely recognizable) and more like Alita: Battle Angel(where they establish things that didn't come until much later in the original story and format then so the new story fliws better.)

Before I passed out, what I saw was a long passage of the movie where he audibly describes what is happening in the movie, with annoying bullshit flittering to slightly obscure the footage. The essay had ground to a halt and useful information came to an end. He stopped his review and was just doing play by play. Clearly not "fair use". Disney was right to file a claim with RUclips. And should again.
@@MickDansforth I disagree, I think the context of the scenes was important to proving the points of the video essay. Understanding what was going on in them helped put the essay into context. But then again, the ambiguity of fair use is why businesses are able to claim so many videos on youtube.

TWELVE MINUTES OF COMPLETED ANIMATION -- GONE? For the unaware, at 12 frames per second (standard for traditional animation), that means 8640 completed, hand drawn images, with all the sounds synced up and all the effects baked in, were just.... gone. If this film was done at 24 frames per second, or had sequences of 24 mixed in, that could be almost double the number! I can't imagine that.

Neerrd! Lol nah, it's actually party cool that you know that. So much time, effort, and talent wasted! They should have saved it, then (10?)years later released the uncut (and unrated?) version. That way at least the work is out there.
It legitimately upsets me, like very deeply, how eviscerated this film is. It angers me because even without this video essay, watching the film by itself you can pick out how disjointed and bizarre the plot it, how the characters seem to be hollow shells when they weren't in the original cut, and the huge potential that this movie had.
I think what irritates me the most is that even Walt himself complained that he had branded his animation so successfully, that he was only allowed in the court of public opinion to make light-hearted fairy tales and nothing else. While watching To Kill a Mockingbird, Walt was quoted as saying "That's the kind of movie I wish I could make!" Even in the early films, you can see Walt trying to push the boundaries set for them. This movie comes along after a massive slump after Walt's death, and it was a golden opportunity to not only reignite the public passion for Disney, but also kindof redirect what Disney animation was about. The animation could still be amazing, the plot and characters memorable, but the movie could appeal to more people than just children and annoying helicopter parents. The first rated-R Disney film? That sounds great! And anyone who says "Disney would've hated The Black Cauldron's original form," I completely disagree. Remember, even Walt himself wanted to branch out and make more mature material. But then dumb parents whined that it was too violent, and this movie gets destroyed in editing, by some guy who has no idea how animation works and has not earned the respect of Disney's animators to begin with, and completely rips it to shreds. It's so incredibly disappointing.
This alone is why we still need 2-D animators. I don't think anyone would be upset if all that deleted content was reanimated back into this film. Any of it that is "lost," just have animators redraw it and match it to the film. Other than "money" and "we don't care," there is really no logical reason why this shouldn't happen.
It's not just overreacting puritan parents of yesteryears... you also have to contend with SJW / feminist jerkweeds of today. This kind of Western animated movie was just never gonna succeed unless it was INDEPEDENTLY funded. But major Hollywood studios always want that widest demographic reach for their movies... the PG / PG-13 range. It's only in Japan and partailly in Europe where you see mature 2D animated movies reach full potential. But in America... it's NEVER gonna be the thing.
I guess it make sense why "animation is ONLY for kids" stigma is one of the BIGGEST flaws of what animation is all about. I would like to see the Disney animated adaptation to _To Kill The Mockingbird._ Too bad that's not going to happen since parents weren't accepted about the "maturity" towards kids because they don't want to expose the truth about what reality looks like until they grow up without any knowledge of how the real world works and the parents want to keep their kids out of it to make sure they are "safe" which it's ironically a big risk to their mental state of mind and once the children grew up without maturity, they become hostile and weak.
Children are people too -- they are human beings just like all of us. They need to learn more about what reality is all about before they need to grow up and enter the real world.

I always said that there may be individuals at Disney or in the field of animation in general willing to push the boundaries and create an array of diverse content but it is the people in charge who are vehemently against it. We ill never get another show like Avatar the last air bender because people underestimate the intelligence of children and we wont get movies like what the Black Cauldron should have been or Treasure Planet because either the powers at be dont want it to exist or overactive drama queen parents.

Disney as it stands now will NEVER do it. In recent years Disney has strayed even farther somehow from what they were. There's no heart in it anymore and it's all cash grabs. The last animated film Disney people made (not just Disney owned) was Moana and even though I think it was a fantastic film it did not take new leaps like Disney used to. With the last few and next few years all being live action remakes of movies that already made millions I don't see this direction changing any time soon.

I bet this is super difficult to do with older animated films - it makes me wonder if they actually shot completed scenes for the cut parts, or just animatics. The way the story is told, it sounds like there should be reels of stuff hiding somewhere begging for a release. However, what I know about older animation practices, I doubt this is true.

I grew up believing that The Black Cauldron, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet were awesome movies. It was not until I was nearly an adult that I was made privy to the realization of how ashamed of these films Disney is... despite them being their most creative and mature films. All of them had a unique aesthetic that allowed these films to stand out. You can never confuse a scene from any of these movies with the other Disney films or the various dime bin knockoffs that came out along side them. You see a shot of Treasure Planet, you know you are in the world of Treasure Planet. You see a shot from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, you know exactly what film you are watching. And the same goes for The Black Cauldron. I mean, for me personally, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, Tarzan, The Lion King, etc... are the only "Disney Renaissance" era films I actually can still enjoy. I never liked any of the older ones and don't care too much for the new CGI ones... I wanted to like the Princess and The Frog... but they ruined that movie for me... pretty thoroughly.... In short, I would really like to see Disney return to *hand drawn* 2D films, perhaps with a mix of CGI in the near future... I don't mind the CGI ones( I also love Toy Story and the Incredibles), just think that their strength and the uniqueness of their art styles lays more with hand drawn films... the Deep Canvas Animation style should have been the direction Disney chose to go with... just my two cents...

The only real problem with Atlantis: The Lost Empire was that when we actually got to Atlantis, we had to go through so many different beats and plot points at the same time, that it really feels like the movie was meant to be a two-parter story. The first film introducing us to the characters and gaining sympathy for them, even the villains, and have it end with getting to Atlantis. With a second film showing more of Atlantean culture and everything else. The film was far less story driven, and far more character driven. And watching the film, especially the first act and a half, the character interactions are what make it great.

@@cretinouscretin9677 If you've seen the making of footage for Atlantis, that's not far off. The production team got so caught up in the journey _to_ Atlantis that they made far too much of it and were forced to cut a _lot_.

i still remember going to see treasure planet at the cinema. loved it. its shame disney completely stopped these cartoon movies to replace them with 3d animation. 3d animation is good, i couldnt imagine toy story without it for example, but i think its a shame that style completely died out.
THe fact that the animation team had to suffer so much through this is truly awful. This film, despite its short and "simple" premise, is one of my favorite works because of how many different techniques are used int eh animation, as well as the beautiful backgrounds and the effort put into movement for characters and clothing. The fact that their new "bosses" were making such ludicrous demands is truly disheartening.
This movie was a visual breakthrough for disney because it was(as far as I know) THE FIRST hand drawn film by Walt Disney Animation Studios to integrate cgi into the has drawn animation
I am Welsh and Welsh is my first language. I watched this when I was a kid and I had no idea it was Welsh because of course they got voice actors who couldn’t pronounce the Welsh names. So sad considering this is the closest ‘The Mabinogion’ will ever get to having a mainstream film adaption. The source material for this film, The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander was heavily inspired by them. ‘Prydain’ is LITERALLY the Welsh word for ‘Britain’. God. So sad how Welsh mythology in general is either forgotten about or is amalgamated into being ‘Arthurian’ legends so England can claim them too. 🙄 I hate it.

I didn't know Prydain means Britain. I never knew how the names and words should be pronounced, but this gives a clue. I've never seen the movie, only read the books. I'll see it if I ever have a chance.
Growing up, I listened to folklore and tales of magic and mischief from my Cymraes grandmother (speaker of Welsh and Gaelic (Scot))...the first really amazing artifact I remember from her as a kid was a carved wooden wizard named "Gwilliam." I'd say the world in general is too, if I'm getting the phrase right, "chwit-chwat" to fully appreciate the varied rich awesome flavors of all the Welsh mythos. Instead of remaking movies like Beauty and the Beast or Lion King that were successful and worked perfectly for animation, Disney should honestly remake their less successful features that would lend well to live action...like Black Cauldron. And Atlantis and Treasure Planet!!!

IMO, the best live action Disney movies (PotC: Curse of the Black Pearl, TRON Legacy) were made with little oversight from Disney itself. The tighter control they take over production, the more monotonous the result. Which gives me hope that maybe they'll let a smaller creative team remake these films as throwaways after the big ones have all been done, and that team will be able to actually do them justice.

@@sydb.9016 I'm cautiously optimistic. It's not a musical, so it should be pretty easy to adapt, but I'm worried they'll flatten the world. It's been a while since the big Steampunk boom, and some of the alien designs are "harder" since they move away from being hominid. Sure, Disney has the money, but they're not brave enough to take the leap on a remake of a movie that underperformed. I sincerely doubt they'll make it as close a remake as their other cash grabs.

I would kill for a Road to El Dorado video! I read a lot into the production history some time ago and their original plan sounds fascinating. It reminded me a lot of a similar history and intent to that of Kingdom of the Sun, which became The Emperor's New Groove. With TRtED coming out on Blu-ray next month it would be perfect time to celebrate it.

I personally want him to be punished for all of the horrible things he has done and all of the amazing movies he has ruined.
The Black Cauldron didn't almost kill Disney, Katsinberg did. By trying to suppress the full potential of this movie and make it another "Disney kids film,"Katsinberg went against everything the Disney company was. Every Golden age Disney movie was a masterpiece because it pushed boundaries and brought something new to animation. Disney created movies that were so intense in visuals,music and tone that he could control the exact emotion that he wanted the audience to have scene by scene. For Katsinberg to no only completely missunderstand this key to Disney movies,but to ignor it and generalize the movies to make a money making formula, clearly shows his short comings as a Disney leader. Thank goodness The Black Cauldron out survived him, even though it could never be what it once was.

1. Possibly be like every other gritty,dark and edgy Disney movie.
2. Be live action, therefore not being the first R Disney movie.
On top of that, the damage has already been done. With the way the company is now there is no way they would allow an R rated animated, or in this case CGI, Disney movie. And even if they did make an R rated Black cauldron they would need to find the old scenes that were cut if they hadn't already been lost to time.

Yes you could argue that this is a cult classic and if alot of people show interest in a remake, then they may remake it. In all honesty this movie probably won't and shouldn't be remade by the Disney company.
The weird part of is was that he should have known better. The LOTR reading/watching, Led Zeppelin listening, D&D playing teenagers of the late 70s and early 80s were the original target audience. And PG-13 wasn't even a thing yet. I don't know if it was to distance themselves from what Bakshi was doing at the time, or trying to desperately bandaid their market share after the also spooky Secret of NIMH after they missed the first major fantasy window or what. But it reeks of compromise. I was one of the people on the petitions back in the 90s to release it on home video, because I saw it as a kid (and had the book record thing, which is obviously what I listened to more than I ever watched the movie as a kid) and I did greatly love it. But as an adult, you can just see the holes where someone that we KNOW in this day and age was a ruthless asshole caused too much compromise to happen...but we can shove some of that blame on Eisner as well. Remember it was during this movie's production that he infamously said ""We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. To make money is our only objective."

Could you imagine if this movie had been left intact and defined Disney for the next 30 years as opposed to the Little Mermaid? What would Disney be today if they had broken their animated story mold nearly two decades early? Sure there are hints of that in the climax of the "Great Mouse Detective" but I've thought for years that the Black Cauldron was a terribly underrated Disney film and that it was always just a few steps away from being brilliant.
It's nice to hear another voice that followed the breadcrumbs left by the film.
The Great Mouse Detective was my favorite (after Hercules) growing up. It had so much. If I had seen The Black Cauldron as I child I would have been obsesssed.
So you want the alternate universe where Disney unrelentingly release violent animation, as opposed to the run of Little Mermaid/Beauty/Aladin/LionKing? Well the motion picture division would have driven themselves quite quickly into bankruptcy!
My uncle was an animator for Disney, and he was involved in The Black Cauldron. The Horned King is fucking amazing. There were mis-steps yes, but I think it was a beautifully brilliant, creepy movie that was underrated. And not just because of the family significance.
The story of Eisner's coup and Katzenberg storming the editing room really brings to mind the anecdotes David Lynch has often repeated about the production of the Elephant Man, and how Mel Brooks (yes, that Mel Brooks) was perhaps the best producer he's ever worked with. Such as not only getting Lynch the final cut anyway despite it not being in his original contract, but also one occasion in which Brooks was showing a work print of the film to Paramount executives, who immediately started requesting alterations to the film and to whom Brooks replied:
"We are involved in a business venture. We screened the film for you, to bring you up to date as to the status of that venture. Do not misconstrue this as our soliciting the input of raging primitives."
Needless to say, given that Lynch getting the final cut was already mentioned, Brooks fought off all the attempts to change the film.

It’s about the bottom line for them now. One only has to notice how seldom they’ll even put The Black Cauldron or even Treasure Planet out on DVD compared to The Little Mermaid or even The Great Mouse Detective. I watched The Black Cauldron for the first time for free back in the years when yt didn't have AI powered copyright claims, & even downloaded it for free years later, & yet I could never find The Little Mermaid's exquisite special edition version online, which I have bought on CD. The Bottom Line is the last word.
Back when I was a teenager, I thought that the Black Cauldron was an inspiration for the Legend of Zelda series.
Mostly because of how the Green tunic design of the boy and the blonde haired design of the girl.
People tell me that Peter Pan was the inspiration for the Legend of Zelda series, but I personally think the Black Cauldron is a bit of a stronger inspiration for the Legend of Zelda series.
Especially how the film was made during the early 1980s making this a more recent inspiration of the video game series that was made around the right time that Miyamoto and others may have seen at the cinema in Kyoto when coming up with ideas for the Famicom games.
My older brother first showed me this film when I was 19. Once he finally realized that while it was a huge part of his childhood, I was barely walking when it came out.
The only part of this amazing film that I don’t like, is the fact that my childhood was empty of it . . .
They failed, fought, bickered and tantrummed the Black Cauldron into the most perfect animated film I have ever seen.
From childhood to adulthood, this movie speaks to you and takes you away to a magical world of fantasy, because it is so accidentally real in its relationships.
I rarely watch any RUclips video longer than 20 minutes, unless it’s from a creator I follow and greatly enjoy.
I didn’t realize this was an hour long until I was 5 minutes into. And I’m glad I didn’t notice the run time!

I remember watching this movie when I was very, very little at my cousin's house, maybe 6 years old. I was terrified but I loved every second of what I saw and that initial reaction has never changed, the horned king is just as terrifying as when I was little and the triumph over him (Especially his death scene) still sends shivers down my spine.
That said I didn't know this movie was based off a book series but I desperately want to read it.
I read the books as a kid and they are awesome. I re-read them as adult and they're awesome. :)

I, for one, actually want the Horned King to make more appearances at Disney. He's one of my favorite Disney Villains, and I could see him being used in the Halloween show at Disney World, using the Black Cauldron to summon fireworks in the sky.

The Horned King is one of the greatest villains Disney ever made; he doesn't break into song, he wasn't designed to be clumsy for comedy's sake, and his goals are as terrifying as his appearance; full world domination and the mass genocide of every living thing on Earth. Well there are ways to avoid copyright problems changing the pitch of the audio, putting the video in a small box with a background, flipping the video, ect. Doing that helps keep the bots from picking up something that might be copyrighted. It's done alot with anime

I REALLY wish there was an unedited version of this movie available, holy SHIT Those images of the men decaying were horrifying even to me, who is as old as this movie is! I cackled imagining all the parents storming out with their kids! As someone who has studied the various stages of decay a body can go through depending on what brings about that destruction, that shit was pretty accurate. Some artists had to do some morbid homework.

Great discussion, though I don't understand why you keep calling Welsh characters as Gaels, and claim that Gaels once lived across much of western Europe.
Gaels live in Scotland, Ireland, Man, and probably formally lived in Galicia and other parts of Spain. The rest of the Celtic World - including Scotland until the Gaels conquered it - was Brythonic (Cymry) and/or Gaulish Celtic. Here's one shortcut - if it uses Ps or Bs where you'd think it would you Cs, you're dealing with the Brythons, not the Gaels.
They're closely related but not the same thing, and giving all the credit to the Irish is distinctly anti-Welsh when your subject matter is the most beloved modern fantasy take on the Welsh cycles of myth and legend known as the Mabinogion.
Again, great video. I thoughly enjoyed it. But if you love a subject so much, do a bit more research and/or please don't diminish your subject matter so much. The Welsh get forgotten enough already to be ignored on their most popular submission to the fantasy genre!

One of my professors worked at DreamWorks. He hated it. And apparently most people there weren't really down with Jeff Katz as their boss, not satisfied with his management or his ideas.

I grew up with the VHS of this movie, I distinctly remember the main character having like a emerald jeweled vest on the case that he never wore in the movie.
That was on my case as well! Always wondered why he didn't wear that in the movie.

I loved the books as a kid and the movie was ok in my mind. I wish they'd focused on one book instead of combining the first two books. But after your indepth look into the making of I'm so pissed it never got to truly shine as it's own thing.

I do...They were kind of a joke for awhile there even before this movie came out. A few theme parks, and some somewhat unremarkable movies for the better part of a decade I really don't remember anyone considering high art (that impression has changed once they got into the VHS market). Sleeping Beauty really screwed them financially for nearly 3 decades, and their output post-SB was weaker in my opinion. Especially the decade before The Little Mermaid we were all looking at Don Bluth as the height of animation and Disney as hanging in there on the prestige of their real classics. I recall being strictly unimpressed with The Fox and the Hound and Oliver and Company in particular; as a kid and watching them in theaters. That weird couple of years between Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Beauty and the Beast was really a huge comeback...and a setback for Bluth who never caught back up again. I'd say 1989, they were tied, and then Bluth was left behind in the dust. The fact that their movies started becoming largely toyetic didn't hurt...that Disney Princess collection definitely had them raking it in for awhile there.
The way you described this tragedy of a film was just, phenomenal. I have never heard such a review that beared so much depth and emotion and really just shed light on a film I had only thought about once or twice. You are a brilliant storyteller and I enjoy reviews of underrated films such as this one very highly. Keep up the phenomenal work.

While the original is something to treasure there aren't enough to truly appreciate the story.
That's why instead of being one movie compiled of bits a pieces of the series it might do the stories better justice to be done in live action over the span of a few movies.
I do agree that there should be more original things, but dont we also want younger generations to know of this film when out of the blue they see a thrilling live action fantasy trailer for this movie.

While I Dont have kids at the moment. I would show them something like Black Cauldron if possible in both animation and if a decent live action was made.
So much that could have made the film better was cut because of Katsenburg. If there was away to bring it back for a new audience I would rather it be live action than CGI. Or I guess with minor CGI involved. I love Black Cauldron for the most part its aesthetic. The art style and how it was so wonderfully done for it's time. It lacks however in story and in Character. Since so much was condensed it kind of took away from those aspects. This is a movie that could benefit with a revamp in live action spread out into perhaps 3 movies. Its after all based after the Chronicles of Perdaine Novels.

Alright, so I finished it, and I got to say, I love the amount of research and detail you go into in your video. The choice of clips, the choice of words show how much love goes into your production. This is the most beautiful and eloquent analysis of my favourite Disney movie. Amazing job, I can’t thank you enough for bringing to light the beauty and innovation this movie and its artists brought to the world. Though it has honestly bought about a burning desire to see the film as the original artists intended. Disney pay attention to this video instead of copy striking it, dig in the vault and find the original cut. I would pay good money to watch it, and I don’t think I’m alone.

It wasn't just Ireland, they used to celebrate this in Scotland as well. My mum came from a tiny village in Scotland. The kids there didn't trick people but they went round in groups rapping on doors and singing for people (like a slightly less terrible version of caroling). They visited every house in the village and usually only got a handful of raisins for their trouble.

The girl in this movie was my favourite disney princess from all movies. I loved how se looked and her attitude when i was young

Thank you so much for redeeming a beloved childhood movie. I was 8 when this film was released and I loved it. I went on to read all of the books. I grew up in a time when Disney did not make princess movies (I was 12 when little mermaid came out and already had my first punk rock cd). This movie was always beautiful and exciting to me as a child. I did see it in theaters. The Horn King is the ultimate villian because he is pure evil. Being a child in the 1980s was not rainbows and kittens, AIDS was talked about in schools and on tv a disease we knew would kill us in terrible ways. We still did drills in case Russia launched a nuclear weapons on us and every night it seemed like the news had stories of "satanic" cults molesting and murdering children. This movie did not scare me, I felt inspired, it was a reminder that good can conquer evil that even in the darkest of times there can be light. I know this is a long comment but I wanted to express a very heartfelt thank you for making this. You keep telling stories.
Watching this so I can get my fill before Disney does lmaoooo also, the Pixar Documentary, "The Pixar Story," it gives a short, but great insight as to how much the Pixar team and Disney team hated how corporate Disney handled the move to 3D.
I'd like to see Disney do this as a live action trilogy with the sort of neon and grunge style that this one has. There's so much more skeleton/zombie violence they can get away with since the Pirates franchise, and LotR and such, plus audiences have much more patience now for character development and epic stories without them being crammed into TV-movie length. Hell, I could even see Netflix picking this up and making several seasons from it. I remember loving the books as a kid and being confused as to why the movie was so different, so I can't help but think that they still have plenty of untapped potential for a great visual series in one form or another.

in at 23:03 to say that Elmer Bernstein's score for this film actually makes use of an instrument called an Ondes Martenot, not a musical saw! Musical saws, Ondes Martenots, and theremins all have very similar tones, so it's an easy mistake to make. All 3 instruments were popular around the same time, too, and in fact, the Ondes Martenot was invented the same year the theremin was patented, 1928. Musical saws are played using, well, a saw, and bending the metal while bowing it can change the pitch. Ondes Martenots generate pitch by running a metal ring over a set of vacuum tubes (later transistors), and later integrated a keyboard as well. Theremins are neat because you play them without touching them; two metal antennae control volume and frequency, each, and sense proximity to determine what value to set. Fun fact: the Ondes Martenot is considered one of the first electronic musical instruments!
