How to change the oil in the V6 Highlander from 2013-2017. @5:02 It should be 25nm not ft/lbs** Oil Filter- goo.gl/9oCxkg Oil Filter Housing Tool- goo.gl/hKDjkd
This is the only oil change review I've watched that someone actually fills a little oil into the filter prior to installing, don't know if it makes a difference but it can't hurt either, personally I think it's a good idea! Awesome video covering the whole process and not a 15-20min. video like 85% of the other videos.
I was just about to ask about this very thing. I've never done it. Never seen it recommended by the manual. Seems like an added hassle and mess maker someone invented.
I've seen others fill some oil into the filter too but then again some don't. Maybe just fills it quicker than having it cycle thru the system, I don't know.
Very good video! Just changed the oil on the wife's 2017 AWD XLE. Some things I would add to help others: #1. Use a 27mm socket on the filter housing tool (Motivx), rather than just sticking a 3/8 drive ratchet on it, to remove it (I (very carefully) needed to use a breaker bar it was so tight from whoever did it last, my wife just bought it, so first oil change by me). When torquing back down, then I think it's okay to just stick the torque wrench into the 3/8 hole. (I also recommend buying the more expensive Motivx FORGED aluminum filter housing tool that is stronger, than the cheap one linked in the description). #2. Buy the 3-pack of filters for $18 instead of 1 for $9 (Amazon). The 3-pack came with 3 drain plug crush washers (all 3 in one of the boxes). Some reviewers were complaining the single pack filter didn't come with the crush washer. #3. Unless you're a big guy, a Highlander is just high enough to get under without even jacking it up or using ramps. This way the car is level and will drain more oil out. (Be sure your driveway/garage is level, of course.) #4. Always use full synthetic, especially in newer/modern vehicles. I got the same 0w-20 Mobil 1 (full syn) Advanced Fuel Economy in a 12qt bladder box at walmart for $45! #5. If you want to do a "good job" wipe everything down clean with shop towels to remove old oil and lube new o-rings with new oil with your finger before reinstalling. #6. Unless you're an expert mechanic, do NOT "go by feel" and USE A TORQUE WRENCH! You WILL break the plastic filter housing and strip out your oil pan by over torquing the drain plug! (It's VERY easy to over torque things on oil changes on any vehicle; I always do it myself and avoid oil changing joints like the plague because they are notorious for this.) #7. Torque Specs with conversions: Drain Pug: 30ft/lbs / 40.6nm. Filter housing: 25nm / 18.44 ft/lbs. Filter housing drain plug: 10ft/lbs / 13.5nm. #8. Oil capacity: For my wife's 2017 XLE AWD 3.5L V6 I put in 5.75qt plus some in the filter housing before screwing it back in. The manual says oil capacity is 5.8qt WITH filter for a 2017 3.5L V6. Some people claim it's 6.4qt, but maybe that's for older models? If you're unsure, play it safe by putting in less (5.5qt or so + more in the filter housing before screwing it back in) and adding later if needed. DO NOT OVER FILL! Also, always remember to check your oil when the engine is COLD. If engine is hot, oil is going to be all over the dipstick and you won't be able to get an accurate reading. Let the car run for a few minutes when you're all done to get the oil flowing and then wait until it's cold again and then check oil level.
@@anotherbrickonthewall You should a little. I think I did a little bit since my fingers were oily anyway, but if you already did the job and forgot to do it, I'm sure it'll be fine since it should get oily around there on it's own when the oil is pumping through the filter. I doubt anything catastrophic will happen if you didn't, unlike over torquing the filter housing and breaking it.
@@pillingthemsoftly4738 On your wife's vehicle, did you have to take off the plastic underguard cover or did it have access holes for drain plug and filter?
@@anotherbrickonthewall There isn't one around the oil pan and filter area on my wife's 2017 XLE. The plastic cover/skid plate is closer to the front and not in the way at all.
Hi, I just wanted to say thank you. I got my Highlander in 2017 and I've watched your video twice a year since then. Your instructions are clear and you move at just the right pace while showing all of the steps and specs. I couldn't ask for a better DIY oil change video. Thanks again.

Thanks for the great video! I have stopped using the little plastic drain plug - it seems like it made a bigger mess trying to shove that up into the filter housing and then pulling the plastic thing back out than just taking the filter off, as there is not very much oil remaining in the filter anyway (it's the equivalent of removing a standard canister oil filter from any other vehicle), but otherwise I've followed your steps exactly!
This has to be one of the most well done videos I’ve seen in a long time! Very professional, with accuracy, neat and clean. Thank you as I just purchased a 2018 blizzard pearl Toyota Highlander.. I have already purchased for filters and the mobile 1 0w 20 oil. I do believe it’s strange that Toyota wouldn’t round up the oil capacity the 6 quarts. That seems strange to me.
We bought a 2017 in the same color that had less than 30k on the clock...runs great. I just put color-matched door guards on it. Do you know the P/N of this 'keyed' oil filter wrench?
I watched at least 15 videos on this subject and, this is the best one I found and it was great! A correction on the 25 NM instead of Ft-LB. GREAT still!
Perfect video, tells you exactly what is necessary and nothing extraneous. What did the people who disliked this video want ... him to come do it for them?
Great video, if you overtighten the drain plug for the filter to about 25 ft lb, you don’t need the special tool. I’ve been doing my wife’s like this for years with no issues. It’s also what they do at the dealers.
Thanks for taking time to post this well-done video! Much appreciated. Note: My 2016 owner's manual indicates 6.4 qt. with a filter change, not 5.7 qt. as indicated. I added 6 qt., ran the engine, and let it sit overnight; the oil level was in the middle of the 2 holes on the dipstick.
OMG praise RUclips and thank you so much for this! Not used to Toyotas, but I was able to get the adapter to pull off the filter housing from auto store. The filter was slightly different than in this video but it was the same as what was in there when I removed the housing. Had to rewatch the video for correct placement of the gasket that goes around the housing and where the smaller O-ring went. Thanks again and this video was super well done!
that lovely plastic housing drain POS!!! I always "Tried" to keep my oil Changes clean on our '08 but that was the part that always failed and oil went everywhere as your trying to insert that POS in there.. Here we are with the 2017 and back to the mess!! Great Video, Thank You!!!
Great video. Including the torque specs for the filter housing, pan drain bolt and filter housing plug was very helpful. The only detail I would add is how to reset the engine service check light on the dash. Thank you
Thanks for the video. I would check the oil level when the vehicle is off the ramp on a leveled surface. BTW, for the 2016 HLs, it takes 6.4-qts of oil to fill to the top level on the dip stick. One more set of those ramps, you will be able to level your HL with enough clearance to change the TC (36-ft/lbs), Rear Diff (29-ft/lbs) fluids as well as the ATF (plus...) in the future.
Very nice tutorial. Another video I watched didn't even mention where the little o-ring went or the plastic drain. Thanks for the links as well. Much appreciated!
Misleading video title, I'm sure it wasn't intentional. I have a 2016 Highlander XLE V6 with the 2GR FE motor. It takes 6.4 quarts including filter not the 5.8 quarts mentioned in this video. The engine was changed in 2017. So, the oil capicity in this video doesn't apply to the 2013-2016 Highlanders.
It’s always a good idea to check your specifications in the owners manual just to be sure. Great video for the general process to change the oil for a range of model years but the engine sizes vary so just double check for yourself as it’s DIY after all eh :) and you should be fine!
Excellent video and directly to the point. Thank you for also including the torque specs. One minor critique I would like to note is i see you trying to pour the oil bottle upside down. The opening of the bottle is supposed to be on the top as you pour. The bottles are designed with the opening on one side to help avoid spilling the oil when the bottle is full and to prevent the "chug-glug" of the oil is it leaves the bottle. too many people do it the wrong way - opening on the bottom.
Just completed first time, using your ideas - no jack. Bought the 64 mm wrench tool, worked well! Drain plug was less tight than the filter part, let's see! Will check again for leaks. Thanks!
Great video - thank you. One note - at 3:05 where you put the special wrench on the oil filter, be sure to make sure it fits all the way over the filter with the protrusions on the filter fitting all the way in the indentations on the special removal tool. It'll give you more torque and avoid problems. I made this mistake the first time I changed mine. Thanks again for the great video.
I upgraded (if you could call it that) to an all aluminum filter housing. Never had an issue with breaking the plastic housing however don't want to crack it and find out later on the road after losing oil. Available from Toyota as I actually bought mine from a dealer selling on Ebay.
Great video - have the same car and video. One thing I find extremely difficult is reading the level one the new oil is put in. Drives me nuts. Only thing I make a habit of is don’t take the oil cap off completely until actually filling. Just loosen it for air to equalize/flow. Hate for something to fall into that hole! Thanks
You need to change the filter removal tool that you link to in the description. That particular one is no longer available. There are others that are, however. Thanks for the video.
Great job on the video. I am lucky that I dont have to do this. I have free oil change from my dealer as long as I own my Highlander. But I see how easy it is. Thanks again
Nicely done, very helpful and thanks for the links. This will save me about 40 bucks for not doing at the dealership and not to mention the wait time and other usual sales pitch. The only thing I was debating is the toyota motor oil vs Mobil 1. I guess, it wont be that different after all in regard to engine life and performance.
Excellent video, easily understood. Particularly appreciated the use of a proper torque wrench and the settings. Too often the instruction is "tighten it." leading to all kinds of problems.
I used to have mine done at the dealer this time I called a gas station - oil lube shop on the phone they told me 80 bucks for oil, filter, lube, car wash , tire rotation.. when I got there they gave another price of 140 more or less could be MORE bla bla bla .. bought the oil 5 q for my wheels but did not have the tools for the filter and with your link I will get it .. Thanks for the video since I DO NOT have got a DECENT pay Raise at work for a long time I am a DIY .dude again . we work the HARDEST and get Jack S or almost nothing .. maybe a 7 cents an hour pay raise OR NOTHING sometime maybe a " BONUS " of 700 bucks maybe and have to pass tons of BS Tests , and the Upper M... just get their big Bonus and p raises and NO TEST for them so I just did my oil and will order the filter Thank you brother and have a wonderful MERRY CHRISTMAS ... at work they got the BS " Happy Holidays " it is BEER TIME now !
Make sure you still have it serviced if you bought an extended warranty. You do not want them saying there is nothing they can do since you changed the oil yourself if a motor issue were to arise.
I bought my oil and filter from the dealer 07/24/2020. The filter was $6 and the oil was $5.91 a quart. Toyota oil is made by Mobil and specially formulated for Toyota engines. I also buy brake pads from the dealer. I like to let my vehicles run a few minutes before an oil change. That way the bearings have oil in them if there is a slight delay in oil delivery after the oil change. I also like to put oil in the oil filter housing on my Highlander before replacing it. It may not be necessary but it puts my mind at ease.
Hey there, great video since I just bought a 2013 a little over a month ago. Also some great follow up comments especially not over torquing the plastic pieces. I am surprised to see so much plastic. Even more surprised to see this oil change required just a filter (cartridge) rather than a standard replacement filter. I guess I’m not in Kansas anymore, eh Dorothy. Lol. One thing I have had trouble doing with this vehicle, though, is reading the stick. Where I live is on a slope so I can’t check it cold first thing in the morning. I tried stopping and waiting, for what I thought was long enough at the gas station to check but I never could see it accurately. It always seemed like it was coming up short on the stick as I was not getting in nice even sheen on the stick. Now that I have added oil to it thinking I was running low tonight I let it sit for a little longer in a parking lot after doing some food delivery and it appears to be running a bit high. Anybody with some good recommendations?? My thought was to jack it up and drain a little bit out of the pan. I was going to take it out of the filter thinking I could just replace a filter and that amount might be Just enough to lower the oil level but looking at the filter procedure I don’t think I will be going that direction. Any thoughts from anyone?
Very clear and precise...I was always getting confused about where the old and new O rings belong...do they need to get swapped out: and where exactly they were. thank you
Its my first oil change in my 15' limited..the drain plug is not coming off. Torqued the whole filter assy to 20ftlbs, tried take it off After no luck. I Just drained it with it still intact. Hopefully no issues. Capacity is 6.4 quarts.
Thanks for the excellent video. Question; you tightened the filter housing to 25 ft.lbs. There is a 25 written on the housing but my understanding is that it is 25 newton-meters or 18-19 ft,lbs. Is the difference in torque critical do you think?
There is... its not 25 in 'murican.. its in newton meters like the rest of the WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD!! the ANSWER in 'Murican is 18.44 ft-lbs. Time to get with the program USA
Jason Lelek I don’t get why people are so jealous of other countries. I could care less what system of measurement they use in your country of Botswana. I’m sure you get along perfectly fine with yours as we do with ours. Torque settings are labeled so that even you can get it right. This idea that every country has to conform to what you or I want is just stupid.
Great video! I would not take off the oil fill cap completely until you are filling with new oil. Only loosen it initially which will allow equalization and drain. Would not want something to drop in there accidentally. Simple but easy thing to do. Also might consider just removing the whole housing and forgetting about the cartridge draining part. I have done it the way you described 2 times on my16 HL and I think I will do it without draining next time. Both ways are messy (plastic 'drain' adapter stinks in reality) and doing it without draining the cartridge saves few steps with minor additional mess. If I like it that way when I do my next change, I will probably just make the drain bolt tight enough where I don't even need the cartridge removal tool to remove the whole housing - just use the 3/8ths to remove the whole cartridge. Also noticed your cartridge is plastic I believe? My 16 HL is aluminum. Anyway just some thoughts! Great video. Love those Highlanders!
condor5635 i wouldnt recommend that on tightening the drain bolt that tight. Its spec is 10 ft/lb. youd probably have to go to at least 40 to make it so it wouldnt turn when removing housing. You could break the plastic housing. Overtightening can also cause leaks. I just re read that yours is aluminum. Your call, but i wouldnt do it
You do not need the pick... If you check the instructions that come with that oil filter element it tells you right on the box not to use a pick. Simply pinch the o-ring from both sides and it will bulge out so you can grab it with two fingers of your opposite hand.
This is one of the better oil change videos I've seen for a Toyota with this type of filter except for one mistake. The torque for the drainplug on the engine was correct but where did you get the torque for the oil filter assembly cap? It is not 25 ft.lbs. Look at that oil filter cap again. It says "25 N•m". 25 N•m is 25 Newton meters. 25 Newton meters is equal to 18 foot pounds. So you over-tightened it just a bit. NEVERMIND, I JUST READ YOUR NOTES AND SEE THAT YOU MADE THE CORRECTION THERE. Actually, it is 25 N•m ± 5 N•m or 18 ft.lbs ± 3.5 ft.lbs. The filter cap drainplug should only be 10 ft.lbs.
This is great. Do you think it's always worth it to change it yourself? Sometimes I wonder if the dealership/oil change service is actually taking all of the steps (e.g., changing the O-rings) or using good quality oil like you're using here.
I just noticed your update to *Torque Spec* from (25nm to 221.3in-lb) WOW!!! that is a massive difference from 25in-lb I wonder if anybody blew an engine because of your miscalculation??? Serious stuff.
Thanks for the video you do realize when you torque the oil filter to 25 foot pounds the drain plug that was supposed to be 10 ft lb was also 25 foot pounds you're supposed to do it without the drain plug then do that separately so you don't go over 10 lb
Well if it was tightened to 25 ft.lbs. then it was over-torqued, though not excessively. Look at the specs found right on the oil filter cap. What does it say? 25 N•m which is 25 Newton Meters not ft.lbs. it should only be 18 ft.lbs. and yes the oil filter drainplug = 10 ft.lbs.
Thank you for mentioning that because I just bought a 2013. I personally have trouble reading the stick and a couple others have mentioned the same. I tried to slowly fill and try to check it multiple times to make sure it wasn’t too low or too high but now it may be a bit high. I’m going to check it once or twice over the next couple of days and if need be jack it up and drain some from the oil pan. The filter looks a little trickier , or detailed, to drain so I may wait until the oil change.
Excellent! Thanks for the torque specs on everything. I like those ramps too. I have a set made up like that too. About the filter housing drain bolt.......is it not necessary to lubricate the drain filter drain bolt o-ring?
Great vid!!! Here’s a dumb ques, is it possible to bypass the filter drain plug and plastic drain piece and just remove entire filter housing and then deal with the oil fild housing later? Lazy wknd mechanic 🔧
The fins on my mom's broke. Whoever did the oil change at the dealer either over tightened or used lock tight. Because it's pretty bad. We gave up and just filled the new oil. We're going to have to go to a shop to get it removed and install a new filter cap assembly.
Awesome overview! Thank you! Much appreciate the detailed tutorial.

What size is it?
what size is the wrench? thx
Perfect video I needed to watch. Other videos ppl skip the smaller o-ring. This video is a must see must like and must save
It’s sort of unnecessary. I never did them on my previous Highlander and I had it for years
Great video - have the same car and video. One thing I find extremely difficult is reading the level one the new oil is put in. Drives me nuts. Only thing I make a habit of is don’t take the oil cap off completely until actually filling. Just loosen it for air to equalize/flow. Hate for something to fall into that hole! Thanks
condor5635 absolutely drives me insane. It’s useless.
Thankyou for a sub double digit length video idk why the hell all the other videos are twenty damn minutes long
Glad you caught that. 25nm only. 25lb-ft could potentially crack the housing
You need to change the filter removal tool that you link to in the description. That particular one is no longer available. There are others that are, however. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for making this video. Used it today and it worked out great.
Excellent video. Haven't changed a cartridge type filter. Very helpful to see this. Thanks!
Great job on the video. I am lucky that I dont have to do this. I have free oil change from my dealer as long as I own my Highlander. But I see how easy it is. Thanks again
Best oil change tutorial on this make/model on the internet. Thk U🙏
Damn that's where the filter located wow...happy I watched this video...
"The Car Care Nut" (a Toyota mechanic for years) says Toyota oil is Mobile 1.
Excellent video, easily understood. Particularly appreciated the use of a proper torque wrench and the settings. Too often the instruction is "tighten it." leading to all kinds of problems.
Just FYI 25 Nm= 18.44 ft lbs
for which torque? drain plug or filter housing?
@@kennyhuie6879
Oil filter cap assembly. It says 25 N•m right on the part.
Very well done instructional video and thanks for the additional torque info. Much appreciated.
Excellent and very informative video. Learned a couple of things that will be useful for me when changing the oil on a recently purchased 2017 HL.
I think 2014-2016 actually needs 6.4 quarts. Hope this helps
Glad you took time to edit the video. There are others that are 20mins long
Thank you for this video. I referenced it in June of 2021 and again today Janaury 2022. Very helpful.
Excellent video - I have actually used this twice now.
Awesome!
Very clear and precise...I was always getting confused about where the old and new O rings belong...do they need to get swapped out: and where exactly they were. thank you
Hey man that was easy 👌 thanks for making the video 👍
Its my first oil change in my 15' limited..the drain plug is not coming off. Torqued the whole filter assy to 20ftlbs, tried take it off
After no luck. I Just drained it with it still intact. Hopefully no issues. Capacity is 6.4 quarts.
Thanks for the excellent video. Question; you tightened the filter housing to 25 ft.lbs. There is a 25 written on the housing but my understanding is that it is 25 newton-meters
or 18-19 ft,lbs. Is the difference in torque critical do you think?
There is... its not 25 in 'murican.. its in newton meters like the rest of the WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD!! the ANSWER in 'Murican is 18.44 ft-lbs. Time to get with the program USA
It's not critical. Actual torque spec is 25 N•m ±5 N•m. So 20 to 30 N•m (or 14.75 lb.ft. to 22 lb.ft.)

Excellent video-well prepared and very informative-organized so every second was useful.
Thanks!
Thank you for this superbly done tutorial. Excellent.

Thanks for such a well done and informative tutorial!
Excellent how to video. Many thanks.
Amazing vid
This is a great help for D I Y backyard mechanics. Thanks
You do not need the pick... If you check the instructions that come with that oil filter element it tells you right on the box not to use a pick. Simply pinch the o-ring from both sides and it will bulge out so you can grab it with two fingers of your opposite hand.

Just bought the 2019 highlander, looks like the same . Thanks
sucks toyota couldnt go back to just a screw on screw off oil filter. not all this taking apart bs
*6.4 quarts with filter
2017 and newer should be 5.8 quarts. 2016 and before is 6.4
This is one of the better oil change videos I've seen for a Toyota with this type of filter except for one mistake.
You are awesome, thank you so much for that accurate torque.

Thank you for having such a great attitude.
Very nice video and detailed! Thanks!
Outstanding instructional...very helpful. Thank you,
Thanks! Glad to help!
Thank you for this video!
This is great. Do you think it's always worth it to change it yourself? Sometimes I wonder if the dealership/oil change service is actually taking all of the steps (e.g., changing the O-rings) or using good quality oil like you're using here.
Great video.....very informative!
Great video, very direct 👍
Excellent video! Thank you so much.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Excellent instructional. Thanks.
Well done. Very helpful instructions. Thank you.
Great video, thanks very much. Dave
I just noticed your update to *Torque Spec* from (25nm to 221.3in-lb) WOW!!! that is a massive difference from 25in-lb I wonder if anybody blew an engine because of your miscalculation??? Serious stuff.
I like those homemade ramps!
Great video, this engine seems to really like Mobil 1 Full Synthetic $35 at Walmart for 5qts.
It also loves Supertech 0W-20 which about $20 less.
@@stevensevek6151
Less than $14 today at the Walmart in Hometown, PA
Cheaper to by good oil than to replace the engine.
Thanks for the video you do realize when you torque the oil filter to 25 foot pounds the drain plug that was supposed to be 10 ft lb was also 25 foot pounds you're supposed to do it without the drain plug then do that separately so you don't go over 10 lb
Watch this video again to see that you are mistaken.
Very Detailed, thank you so much for the video
Thank you for the explantion .
Good job l really like the way u doing clean work & u make it easier to understand tanks
Excellent video Thanks for the help Flash
Thank you for this tutorial save me money
Do you need that special tool or can you use a universal one? Or just one that fits the size?
Very clear and nice demonstration. Just wonder why added oil to a new filter before put it back on. Thanks.
I filled the new oil filter just to make sure the oil supply would be uninterrupted. Not sure if it really helps anything, just did it in case.
Great vid man you just saved me a ton of money thank you. How do you check how your oil levels are on the dash? If it can be checked
I'm not aware of a way to check the level on the dash other than a low oil level light.
Thanks. I’m used to Honda just got one of these babies as my first Toyota I wasn’t sure if it showed it or not. Thanks for the reply
Thank You, a little different than the chevy (screw filter to side of engine block). I think I can do this and save $50
One addition would be to see what the dip stick looks like. Not sure if it just me but i have a hard time reading dipstick.
That’s the hardest part of the job I have not figured out a good method to read it. These new oils are way to clear on the dipstick.
Thanks excellent description.
I use Super Tech less than $14 for five quarts.
For 2013 highlander with 3.5 v6 it's 6.4q with filter. The one in the video doesn't look like a 13 so maybe it's different
Micro screw drivers from like dollar tree helps too for Orings never had an issue
Very helpful and complete video thanks
Why did Toyota do away with spin off type filters.
To make it harder for consumers. They want you to take the vehicle to one of their service centers.
Here's your answer...

Thanks so much...awesome video....
Excellent! Thanks for the torque specs on everything. I like those ramps too. I have a set made up like that too. About the filter housing drain bolt.......is it not necessary to lubricate the drain filter drain bolt o-ring?
Great video, very detail and good instruction, can you post the link to buy housing remove socket? Thank you very much.
Great vid!!! Here’s a dumb ques, is it possible to bypass the filter drain plug and plastic drain piece and just remove entire filter housing and then deal with the oil fild housing later?
Lazy wknd mechanic 🔧
Yeah, shouldn't be a problem. Might be little more mess, but easily doable.
a rock hit my oil pan and left a small dent. no leak. should i replace it?
The fins on my mom's broke. Whoever did the oil change at the dealer either over tightened or used lock tight. Because it's pretty bad. We gave up and just filled the new oil. We're going to have to go to a shop to get it removed and install a new filter cap assembly.
Excellent! Thanks for vid!
