Hi everyone! I have decided to cut back my monstera adansonii all the way to the base 😳. I am hoping that doing so will give the plant a much needed reset. It has dropped a lot of leaves near the base, causing it to look very leggy and bare. My goal is to ultimately transform it into a lush, trailing pot. I will do update videos every few weeks, so stay tuned!

I am fortunate to have really big east and west windows in my house. My plants grow compact without any supplemental light. One of my rooms has a small south window and a large east window. Most of my plants are in there and they absolutely love it. My adansonii (wide form) has huge huge leaves and its climbing up a big wooden pole. I just keep wrapping it up and down, up and down the pole and its pretty full (for an adansonii). Some leaves are as big as my head. Most are bigger than my hand. I do trim it once in a while though, it does push out new growth from the bare vines. As hard as it is to trim your plants that you have worked so hard to grow, its beneficial. I always propagate the cut leaves then place them back in the bottom of the pot to start a new vine. Thats my secret to a lush adansonii.

Haha I was nervous the entire time! I’m happy to say that new roots are coming in nicely and I can see leaf nodes on the mother plant starting to expand. Some leaves did yellow and fall off... understandably, because they were indeed lengthy vines, but overall it’s doing alright! ☺️

Thanks for your tips. They are very helpful. I was also glad you recommended getting a moisture meter because I need to convince my husband that I really needed it for my Monstera adansonii because it keeps getting yellow leaves. D'oh!

Love this! I came because my leggy adansonii. The way you casually tear off bottom leaves scares me a little. I wanted to propagate/prune it but I'm scared because my plant is still a baby. All the leaves are super small. I wish I can show you and get more advices.
If you have instagram you can send pics to me! How long are the vines? How big is the pot? It sounds like you could still propagate but I would leave some leaves on the mother plant to give it better chances of photosynthesis in case your plant is not that mature.

First time propagating my Monstera and praying this goes well. I've tried propagating before with other plants but have never been successful

Why when I do this, the cut parts just turn brown and don’t ever grow anything back?
I would put a few mirrors in the room! I helps with the lighting! Try it out. Let me know if it works for you!
I’ve thought about it! Reflect some light into the dark corners.
I just did this with my GIGANTIC monstera deliciosa. It got leggy after a cross country move and a new home with less light. I cut it into probably 10 pieces. Lol Nerve-wracking. I haven't been successful in propagating my adansonii though. They always rot. 😫
Wow! I hope your Deliciosa is doing well. My propagations usually do well if I add nutrients to the water. If they rot, it’s usually because the plant wasn’t doing well in the first place 🤷🏻♂️

Also: that monstera looks awesome but I can see why you felt the need to chop it. How big is your collection at the moment and do you feel overwhelmed with them at all? I actually just downsized my collection because I definitely went overboard with trying to green up my apartment in the beginning.. but at least everything feels a little more curated now!
Aww I’m really glad you subscribed 😉 I have acquired only a handful of plants since my houseplant tour video. I feel like right around 50 is a sweet spot. I know what you mean by feeling like everything is curated. Sometimes I do feel like I have a plant “just because”. Maybe those plants I can give away to friends, which makes me feel good too. Every plant should spark joy, and that’s what makes everything worth it! At the same time, I still have some plants on my wishlist. Not sure when I will ever become overwhelmed... I just enjoy being around my plants 😆

I feel like RUclips can be such a weird place full of toxicity and while the "house plant community" (lol) is certainly not exempt - there are people like you that I feel are so authentic and just really enjoying their time on here! :D
Around 50 is definitely the sweetspot for me as well. I think I currently have about 80-100 plants and I still plan to get rid of some more. I'm trying to be a little more mindful of where I buy from with the recent hype, and also try to trade more than buy. I'm not sure how the market has become in the states but in Germany, it's quite crazy.

In the states, it’s quite crazy as well. A simple Etsy search for some “rare” plants shows me that prices are still going up! 😖
Hi, How long did it take for the roots to come? Also, any video on how to carefully pot them back?
On a healthy cutting, roots can start to show after a week! I have a video of my monstera albo transferring from water to soil 😁

It is water with a few drops of Dr. Q’s Plant Tonic, only available here in the Southwest US Star Nursery, but is similar to Superthrive, which is easier to find.

I got 3 cuttings from a person and put it in water till I saw roots. She's doing great making knew leaves
My problem is two of my little leaves have yellow edging. I was told I over watered it but I hadn't watered it for 2 weeks when I did. Any advice. I'm going to make a moss pole for her.
If they are the original leaves, the yellowing is normal on those; sometimes they completely yellow and fall off as the plant focuses energy into the new growth. As long as the new growth looks healthy, you should be alright.

Yes as long as you have some nodes left on the mother plant, which sounds like you do. New growth will appear along those nodes.

Yes. They are tropical plants so they don’t like the cold; they will conserve energy until it’s warm again. You can try to promote growth by finding ways to warm up the environment (greenhouse cabinet, heat mat, move it away from drafts, etc). 😊
So a few mouths ago i got a few nodes of adansonii its about a foot and a half long but its so thin and has very tiny leaves with no fenestrations im unsure if im doing something wrong
I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. A thin stem will produce tiny baby leaves before they start to mature and grow bigger leaves. If you can, place it in the brightest location without direct sun. If using grow lights, place the grow lights 4-6” above the plant to encourage faster growth. Long vines indicate that the plant is trying to stretch to find more light. Lastly, patience is key! It can take 6 months before it matures and gives you fenestrations, but I would say brighter light is your best friend.
Also, trailing/hanging vines typically push out smaller leaves and longer vines versus if you had it staked up a pole.
I dont know what to do with mine im afraid to cut it....
Don’t be afraid! If I can give you any advice… if you are confident about the root system of the mother plant, then you should have nothing to worry about. Those healthy roots will push out new, lush growth as long as you are giving it bright, indirect light and water when soil is almost dry. For the cuttings, put them in water with some Superthrive and also place them in a bright spot. I was afraid too, but if you watch the update video on my channel where I combine the cuttings with the mother plant, you can see what you’re missing out on! 😉
