The Master System version of the first Eggman boss is, actually, HARDER than the Game Gear version. As you can see, in the playthrough, you're able to jump to hit him, easily, but... on the Master System, because he hovers SO DAMN HIGH, you can't, actually, jump to hit him like that anymore. Instead, you must wait, until he stops at one of the sides of the screen, and lowers down for a ramming attack. Now's your chance! Attack him as he's lowering, then, get out of the way, before he rams you. It's, basically, the, exact, same fight; it just takes a little longer to beat him. The Master System version of the second Eggman boss is, surprisingly, EASIER than that of the Game Gear's, in my honest-to-god opinion. Instead of standing on a bridge, you're, actually, fighting him on three islands, AND you have an easier time attacking him, and avoiding his attacks. You start on the middle island, and he'll pick one of two possible places to pop up. As soon as you see him, bop him on the head, and land on, either, the right, or left island (whichever is closer to the side he appeared on). Then, when he fires his blaster, time your jump to avoid it, and land back on the middle island. Just rinse, and repeat, until he goes down, and you win.
Also on an unrelated note, the Game Gear was $149.99 retail when it was released in North America in 1991, with inflation that is equivalent to over $260 in 2016.... INSANE!
If when you die, you can choose the time you want to be born...i'm going for the 90's...I was born in the early 2000's...damn it I wish I wasn't sometimes :P
Gas Giant here's a thought to be had. Why did your previous life choose to be born in the early 2000's? Maybe there is something your previous self realized about being born in the 90s that you simply don't understand.
Loved this version of Sonic simply because I love the idea of getting the Chaos Emeralds actually within the levels. Also, Bridge Zone's theme sounds like Janet Jackson's Everywhere I go. Well, actually Sonic was out first...
lol! bought my daughter a gamegear years ago with a tv adaptor. All second hand but it was soooo much fun to play. Came with a rechargable battery pack which really helped considering it was rubbish on normal batteries. This game was preinstalled and i think it was the only one we ever played. Great memories for sure!
Bless yo dude! I'm glad. Knowing something like that gives you a different perspective and helps you appreciate the current status of videogames VS what it was back then...
While the Game Gear having color was certainly ahead of its time was much more expensive and the batteries drained them faster than the GameBoy. And because the Gameboy was in Puke Green or black and white, depending on the revision, made games for the little brick easier to produce while being an affordable device. So at the time it made sense. It’s really no wonder why alongside the Atari Lynx Sega’s handheld didn’t sell very well and would continue to stick to consoles.
Thanks for this vid--major nostalgia. I am going to check out the rest of your channel--I'm always looking for walkthroughs with commentary. It's nice to see an experienced player giving advice and tidbits and comments about how the game differs from others, etc. I don't really enjoy watching just straight playthroughs (i.e., without commentary). I also hate Let's Plays like PewDiePie where he's just shouting obscene stuff and doesn't talk intelligently about the game.
I think I know why all the emeralds are blue. After the sixteen bit game, sonic suddenly remembered that a legend said there was seven emeralds, so he went to make sure eggman didn't use the seventh emerald, but the doc already had it. Sonic's appearance surprised eggman, and he accidentally split the emerald into six parts and changed South Island
When I got a Game Gear for Christmas in 1992, I got Sonic 2, which was new at the time, but while that was one of the games I wanted most, I also wanted this Sonic, and for some reason it took quite awhile before I was able to find a copy of the Game Gear game. Odd that it was easier to find the then-new sequel than the first one.
I still have my old Game Gear as well, the 6 AA battery draining beast that it is. I had no idea Sonic 1 was on the Game Gear, when I got it, I had Sonic 2! That game hates everything, but especially the player! Love your LPs! Lovin' the old Sonic games, including two I have never seen played before now: Knuckles Chaotix and Sonic CD. Great job!
I remember this game, mostly because the first act of Green Hill Zone could be completed in about 17seconds, which ramped up a shedload of points and therefore lives.
Clement, wanna know what’s funny, StH1 for the Genesis was my first Sonic Game, my father had it on our wii, I saw him playing it, he was at scrap brain, he was about to rage quit when I asked him to play, he warned me it was too hard, but I took that chance, I played scrap brain and I achieved what my dad could not, and beat the game for him, he was shocked that I managed to do that, and I said, “It’s called studying, Dad, I’ve been watching you play the game from outside the doorway, and been mapping out how to play on a piece of paper, I may have surpassed you in Sonic game skills,” then I asked if he wanted to see me play the whole game, he said he’d do that, AND time me, and I’m gonna say this, you beat how long it took to me to beat the game, but I am proud of that, cause the only thing that stumped me were the Special Stages, all except for the seventh, I’m glad to know you and I are Sonic fans since aa young age, Props to you bro, btw, I posted my first LP yesterday, I got 6 parts out in one day, here’s a link to the playlist. ruclips.net/p/PL3BMCfbE3HaFZwY1k7TvPVeo3ucfNw05x
That jumping Sonic sprite from the beginning when you start up the game is a homage to a segment of a deformed claymation Sonic doing the same thing in some of the Japanese commercials for some Sonic games. Sonic 1 and Sonic CD were some commercials that had this (Sonic 1 has the entire thing in full).
I remember Sonic the Hedgehog for game gear, I ended that game in one night, this was my favorite game just like Sonic 2, Chaos, Triple Trouble, Tails Adventures was my all classic fave games.
This was one of my favorite Game Gear games. I played it for hours whenever we visited my grandparents' house because I had no cousins my age and all the adults were too busy watching football or socializing or whatever to care about what I wanted to do.
When I was a kid, I just adored playing this game on the Master System, the very first SEGA console that I ever properly played. When I got older, I was treated quite poorly by my school peers, who assumed that I would break their consoles, and games, if I got my hands on them. Little did they know that I grew up to be an even better gamer than they EVER were!
Here is my list of Game gear games that are the best ones to play soinc 1 sonic 2 mortal kombat 1 MK2 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and MMPR The Movie Streets of Rage 1 Streets of Rage 2 shinobi 1 and 2
i completed pretty much all the ports on DX when i was like 4, and i didnt think id remember much about the game, but then i looked at the world map adn felt strangely familiar... then when i seen the special stage i felt strangely at home... when you entered green hill act 2 and got the chaos emerald, even before you got it i was almost telling myself to go left for somthing... then the bridge zone music just flew back in my face and i was there.... i miss the past -.-
Actually Clement, you can get Sonic's face to appear on the goal signpost. It's just luck based and most of the time you usually get Eggman's face to appear on the signpost. If you do get Sonic's face to appear you get an extra life. It's only happened to meat least twice when I played through this game a few times.
The graphics were not Genesis quality, though. The GameGear was basically a portable Master System. The hardware was identical in almost every way. They even had an adapter that let you play Master System games on it! It did look really good though!
At the beginning of Green hill zone act 2 you missed a hidden life. Anyway this is one of the best sonic games IMO and the very first Sonic I ever played.
Ah, the Game Gear. I remember that old MONSTER of a handheld. Damn thing ate through batters in like, minutes. Still, I loved the machine, Tails' Adventure was my most played game on it.
For some reason, I always had a much harder time with the game gear version of Sonic 1. The genesis version is pretty darn easy to me, but the game gear version always has me worrying about not having enough lives or getting a chaos emerald.
Hell, I'm young, but I still know what a gamegear is! I have my old one, and Sonic the hedgehog 2. That's all I have from it, but I'm only 15 and I still know.
Actually they all owe everything to Mattel and Bandai and other such groups. The Game and Watch came after the advent of other handheld LCD games. The Game and Watch came out in 1980, some of the first handheld LCD games came out in 1976. I was born in 1983 so I grew up playing my dad's Mattel Electronic Football. It's actually still sitting around my house fully functional.
same here to be honest that's really the only really hard one as you have to stay on the platform dodge the bombs he throws on you and try and take him out at the same time most of the bosses on the game gear game are realatively simple though I do ermember completing this game once without losing a sinfle life once I think i also got all the extra lives and chaos emeralds as well probably was my fave game gear game really a true gem
I'm not very familiar with the GG version but I've played the MS version constantly throughout the years, there is more than just Eggman and the exclamation mark sign, there is a Sonic sign possible that gives you an extra life. I'm not even sure how to trigger it but it's definitely happened a few times.
It is, though it has some differences, like, for example, the very first ring box you can see in this video, had more rings right above it (very small difference) and the first boss was actually a challenge, cause you could only hit him when he was on his way down to dash towards you.
I have to say the Master System game is a touch harder than the Game Gear version as there are a few changes in these levels. Mostly the bosses. Green Hill boss is initially out of reach until Robotnik sloooowly descends down one of the sides of the screen and then shoots off rapidly to the other side. Bridge's boss isn't on the bridge. There's three platforms with bottomless pits/water that Robotnik raises out of to shoot his little energy balls.
The end sign has a Sonic or Ring appear on it occasionally, but it's very rare. Sonic = 1-up Ring = 10 rings (though I may be thinking of Sonic 2 for the Ring sign)
Wow, I didn't realize there were gamers out there who don't know what a GameGear is. I guess it makes sense though. Time flies and all that. Anyway, yeah, the GameGear's only real flaw was the amount of batteries it took to power it(a whopping 6 AA's) and that they only gave you 2 hours of game time. Having an AC adapter was an absolute must! It's a shame, because the GameGear was actually superior to the Gameboy in every other way. It had color, a backlight, and I think even a bigger screen.
@ClementJ642 If this was not already mentioned, this was the first Game Gear title, and probably the 06th title for the Master System. Nevertheless though, the memory in Sonic Game Gear was more than Sonic Master System; However, the titles do have different layouts, Special Stages, and animations for Sonic and Robotnik. :)

I know I'm late but I always roll on the bridge slopes in the Bridge Zone boss and hitting him alot, making him an absolute joke
Fun fact:There are actually a few frames on the green hill boss where u can jump up and hit him i've seen it in speedruns
there is a sonic sign as well as a ring sign but both are very rare.
Bridge Zone's music was actually turned into Tails' theme in the Sonic Adventure games.
Also on an unrelated note, the Game Gear was $149.99 retail when it was released in North America in 1991, with inflation that is equivalent to over $260 in 2016.... INSANE!
Well, it was really advanced for it's time. Especially compared to the original Gameboy.

Agreed
Thumbs up for bridge zones music!
It has simurlatlery's to a Janet Jackson Song
Loved this version of Sonic simply because I love the idea of getting the Chaos Emeralds actually within the levels. Also, Bridge Zone's theme sounds like Janet Jackson's Everywhere I go. Well, actually Sonic was out first...
I just bought this on 3DS and its really good.
4:02 Clement's laugh always gets me.
Still better than the gba port
Unfortunately truw
AlexanderTheGr8 tf do you mean “Unfortunately?”
Game Gear StH is a great game!
@@pokeblue596 They mean "unfortunately" because a GBA should be capable of much better, yet "Genesis" fell far, far below.
Did everyone else unlock this on sonic adventure dx
This and MK2 were the best! I was glued to the outlet playing all the time. Good memories with that monster of a handheld,
lol! bought my daughter a gamegear years ago with a tv adaptor. All second hand but it was soooo much fun to play. Came with a rechargable battery pack which really helped considering it was rubbish on normal batteries.

I had it on Sonic Mega Collection. Too bad, it didn’t have Sonic 2 for game gear.
Bridge Zone was my childhood
While the Game Gear having color was certainly ahead of its time was much more expensive and the batteries drained them faster than the GameBoy. Bridge Zone and Jungle Zone had my favorite music in this game. Great commentary, by the way; it's very funny.
This was the first sonic game I played. I love seeing it again.
Sonic blinking while he has the shield makes me think of somebody repeatedly going in and out of Debug mode.
Did you know fun fact: that the bridge zone theme is Tails Theme believe in myself but remixed
The Great Attack wouldn’t it be the other way around?
When I got a Game Gear for Christmas in 1992, I got Sonic 2, which was new at the time, but while that was one of the games I wanted most, I also wanted this Sonic, and for some reason it took quite awhile before I was able to find a copy of the Game Gear game. Odd that it was easier to find the then-new sequel than the first one.
After 22 years bridge zone is still my fave song in all of sonic.
Clement! There is a Sonic sign! From the manual of this game, there's a picture of the sign and it says, "One-Up: You earn an extra chance!"
I loved this game so much.
I still have my old Game Gear as well, the 6 AA battery draining beast that it is. I had no idea Sonic 1 was on the Game Gear, when I got it, I had Sonic 2! That game hates everything, but especially the player!

I owned a Game Gear as a kid. I never needed to by batteries for it since I had an adapter. I always played my Game Gear at home.
I didn't play many game gear games, but the Judge Dredd game for gamegear was awesome
huh... a playthrough where the commentary makes sense and the humor doesn't diss the game, only points out some true stuff about it. nice vid.
You can see how clements sanity withers away over 6 years

HAPPY BIRTH-DAY Game Gear !!!!!
Somehow I missed this initially even though I'm trying to watch in order. Oh well, here we go.
That jumping Sonic sprite from the beginning when you start up the game is a homage to a segment of a deformed claymation Sonic doing the same thing in some of the Japanese commercials for some Sonic games. Sonic 1 and Sonic CD were some commercials that had this (Sonic 1 has the entire thing in full).

hours??? the battery lasted that long?
@@atomcrusher1236 I had the battery pack
Got this game on Master System. Had to wait 8 years to find a Master Mega Converter to play it on my Mega Drive.
Worth it.

remember playing this as a kid was so amasing :D
I had a Sega Genesis as a child... But I had no freaking idea what a game gear is until you said it xP
I like the idea of finding the chaos emeralds in stages and I hope it returns in other new sonic games

I CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT A PUSHOVER EGGMAN IS IN THIS GAME
Sonic bopping his head to the music in the bridge

I'm 13 and I know what the freakin' Game Gear is. Wow.
NexebNoXV Same. Except a little older.
Great info, thanks.
I was 5 when I first learned what a Game Gear was.
I had this on the SEGA Master System, it was the first game I ever beat.
fun game for game gear 1
Actually Clement, you can get Sonic's face to appear on the goal signpost. It's just luck based and most of the time you usually get Eggman's face to appear on the signpost. I personally think most of the sonic game gear games are underrated
This was the first LP of Clement's that I watched. And Hooooly Shit. I was hooked.
I had a Gamegear. Damn that thing was huge, and it guzzled Batteries like it was water
"Flee pigs and chickens!" Sonic saved the bacon and eggs!! :D
This sonic game was my first game ever
The shield flashing with sonic popping in and out is actually on the game gear version.
Eggman was always his name back in Japan.
The graphics were not Genesis quality, though. The GameGear was basically a portable Master System. The hardware was identical in almost every way. They even had an adapter that let you play Master System games on it! It did look really good though!
The bridge zone music sounds like tails theme from SA1 & SA2
This has bridge zone, and bridge zone is awesome! That makes it better than the genesis game.
wow, even i know of the game gear and i didn't grow up with sega systems. thankfully sega games keep getting remade so someone like me can play them.
At the beginning of Green hill zone act 2 you missed a hidden life. Anyway this is one of the best sonic games IMO and the very first Sonic I ever played.
In the Mastersystem version you can only attack Robotnik when he's lover down and about to attack.
neat fact, bridge zone music was remixed for tails theme in sonic adventure, "Believe in Yourself?
Ah, the Game Gear. I remember that old MONSTER of a handheld. Damn thing ate through batters in like, minutes. Still, I loved the machine, Tails' Adventure was my most played game on it.
For some reason, I always had a much harder time with the game gear version of Sonic 1. The genesis version is pretty darn easy to me, but the game gear version always has me worrying about not having enough lives or getting a chaos emerald.
Eggman [Robotnik] doesn't charge a laser, he charges at you !
Hell, I'm young, but I still know what a gamegear is! I have my old one, and Sonic the hedgehog 2. That's all I have from it, but I'm only 15 and I still know.
The Game and Watch was Nintendo's first handheld, and also the innovative machine for the Game Boy and Sega Game Gear.
My Game Gear is broken, but I have Sonic 1, 2 and Chaos for it. Classic stuff.
Part of Tails' theme from Sonic Adventure uses part of Bridge Zone's theme.
This video reminds me,
Will you do the NeoGeo Pocket game?
Am I the only who thinks Bridge Zone's music sounds like the opening of Full House? Maybe that's why it's so catchy Clement!
this music in bridge zone will later become Tails' theme in Sonic Adventure
There is a hidden 1-up if you jump down the second pit before the Green Hill boss fight...not that you would need it, but it's there...
Tails theme music from Sonic Adventure is a remix of the Bridge Zone Music.
same here to be honest that's really the only really hard one as you have to stay on the platform dodge the bombs he throws on you and try and take him out at the same time most of the bosses on the game gear game are realatively simple though I do ermember completing this game once without losing a sinfle life once I think i also got all the extra lives and chaos emeralds as well probably was my fave game gear game really a true gem
I'm not very familiar with the GG version but I've played the MS version constantly throughout the years, there is more than just Eggman and the exclamation mark sign, there is a Sonic sign possible that gives you an extra life. I'm not even sure how to trigger it but it's definitely happened a few times.
Any idea if you'll do the Master System or Game Gear version of Sonic 2?
It is, though it has some differences, like, for example, the very first ring box you can see in this video, had more rings right above it (very small difference) and the first boss was actually a challenge, cause you could only hit him when he was on his way down to dash towards you.
Did you know that the theme song for Bridge Zone was remixed for Sonic Adventure? It became Believe in Myself, the theme song for Tails.
This music is so awsome!!!!!!!
What they never tell you is that Dr. Eggman is really Dr. Wily. This is what Dr. Wily did when he was a tad bit younger. ;D
The end sign has a Sonic or Ring appear on it occasionally, but it's very rare.
Sonic = 1-up
Ring = 10 rings (though I may be thinking of Sonic 2 for the Ring sign)
I remember playing this in sonic adventure dx before ever seeing sonic 1 and I thought this was the genesis game
this reminds me of the sonic 2 game gear bad ending
+xman 1239 how?

that's why i believe game gear sonic 1 is the first in the canon, hands down. ^_^
ITS ROBOTNICK!!! Eggman wasnt thought of yet back then!
I could have sworn you could do it also in the Sonic Game Gear game
