My explanation for the lava save: Sonic at the time had a Chaos Emerald, if he fell into the lava, the Emerald would sink with him. If you were Eggman, would you want the Emerald to sink into the lava?

For Tails, you need to finish the level with 77 rings while having the same amount of lives you started the level with. You get a continue if you get Tails.
I love going back to this LP because it's refreshing to see a positive opinion on this game for once. Aside from a few annoying parts, the game as a whole is a satisfying challenge for me, and without using cheap enemy placement as the only source of that challenge.

It was a sonic panel which I think gave me an extra life and its the first time I ever got it. Also, according to the instruction book for the game there is a tails panel as well that earns you a continue. In my 20 years of owning the game I have never got a tails panel.
I remember the old days, when I used to play Sonic 2 on the Sega Master System. We'd do OK, until Underground Zone, Act 3. We fall into lava, and Robotnik saves us. We always thought we had fucked up, mainly because the main baddie has grabbed hold of us. And yes, the boss for Underground zone ALWAYS gave us trouble

I remember I was able to take that emerald by riding the very first glider in the Sky High Zone. It was really easy that way and I didn't have to do the whole stage at all. Yes I was a little cheater but that game was HARD!
I've always thought Eggman wanted to beat sonic himself, which is why he didn't want sonic just accidentally dying. He wanted to fight him with HIS robots so he can say HE did it.

i looked up this game just for the first boss battle as i remember getting my ass kicked every time. i couldnt agree with you more as to how hard it was as a kid.
You are someone who can appreciate a challenge and a game mechanic. If game designers removed what people complained about, there would be nothing but the start point, the hero, and the goal. Just a few inches away from the hero. And to beat the games: you just walked. Right into the goals. Even if water levels were truly bad, it would still be a bad idea to remove them. Because people would just find something else to complain about.
The way I always saw the game go is Sonic is made to get the emeralds for Robotnik, so in the start he saves him so he can go get the job done. Which is why Robotnik breaks that first boss, which is also why the robots that were already built are facing Sonic instead of Robotnik himself. And at the end, once Sonic has all the emeralds he tries to kill Sonic but thanks to the tubes built to bring him into the trapped room, sonic survives.
I remember this game being the major reason I never was much of a gamer or a Sonic fan as a kid because I sucked so bad I could never get past the first level of this game.
How to get to the level select: At the sega logo screen, press and hold the D button Down/left, button 1 and button 2 simultaneously. Hold until the title appears and tails blinks. On Tails' third blink, press start when his eye is shut. You'll hear a chime if you've done this correctly.
Oh my god. This game. I remember, I got a Game Gear when I was 5 for Christmas I think. I didn't even ask for it. I already had a Game Boy, and I never had a Sega system, so seeing the Game Gear make me think "It has colors and it's BACKLIT. Holy crap, this is the future." But then I figured out that the six batteries only lasted four hours. And the only games I ever got for it were the ones my parents got me initially. Madden 94 and this game, Sonic 2. Now, I knew absolutely nothing about football at that age other than the word "Touchdown" and Sonic 2, well, in the years I owned that Game Gear until it broke, which was about 6 years, I could never ever beat that first boss. I need to revisit it and settle the score. But are other 2d sonic games this hard? I've never even played the Genesis Sonic games.
The reason the first boss is so impossibly difficult is because those balls are really hard to dodge! Also, there are other things you get from passing the pannel at the end. You can get Sonic which gets you an extra life, and Tails which gets you a continue. Those two are extremely rare, though, and I still haven't figured out how to get them.
I'm in the camp that couldn't get past the first boss. It got to the point where I started to cry at the third stage because I knew Sonic was about to die and I was gonna get a Game Over! Granted, I was 7...but still.

Oooh Labyrinth Zone... For an introduction to a franchise, that could have gone better yeah. :P Act 2 of Hydrocity is actually my favorite because of the awesome looking water slides. IDK what it is, but they just look cool against the purple background. Once you get used to the wall segment it's not hard. Spindash is your friend. Also depending on which version you're playing, mind the spring. xD

Oh man!!! This game!!! As a kid I could never pass this game! I could do the genisis ones just fine but I couldnt even get past act 2 of the first level on this one unless I was playing with my sister.
What I never understood about this game was: on each Boss stage, there were NO Rings, and you could die just trying to GET to some the bosses. The BIGGEST PROBLEM with this game was: EACH CONTINUE USES A CHAOS EMERALD. So, if you Continue JUST ONCE, you will NEVER beat the game with all of the Emeralds. For a game this hard, you should have at least 5 Continues to start with.
Said it in the Sonic 1 LP I'll say it again here just in case, if there's any way to do so, raise the framerate at which you record. The issue is that the flickering is a 60fps animation rendered almost invisible in a 30fps recording. :P
I figured out the "mash left" trick on my own, but even that doesn't work too well. Maybe it's because I'm playing on the Sonic Gems Collection, but sometimes the glider konks out and stops acknowledging when I push left. Even when it works, I lose some altitude no matter how hard I mash left.
Robotnik's got Tails! Sonic can't leave without his buddy Superfl- Tails! Tails is acting fairly coquettish in that title screen. A relic of the Genesis version of Sonic 2's early development, maybe?
I try and try that hand gliding, I alway mash the left button but I still can't do it. I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong our that I'm missing anything but it never works. I play it on the Master System by the way if that helps.

Apparently, it's possible for Eggman to not save you from the lava. When I was a kid, I tried to see if you could get him to not show up, and once I managed to do it. I don't recall exactly what I did, but I remember walking off the cart rails very slowly. Or something. I dunno, it's been a while.
No you're mistaken, there's a home console on this game and it is called the Sega Master System and that's the 8-bit home console. There were Sonic games released on that system as well too. The Game Gear games were the ports on the Sega Master System. Were you assuming that I was referring to the Sonic games on the Genesis?
I don't know about the level design of the water stages, but most of the music used there are just awesome, as we will soon see with Sonic 3K's Hydrocity Zone. Speaking of which, I don't quite recall Sonic & Knuckles having any actual water stages in the game...so would that make it your ideal Sonic game? :D I did beat Sonic 2 for the Game Gear once, but I never knew about the Chaos Emeralds and only got to the last stage with their difficult level select code! XD Just pulling it off is epic!

I did beat Sonic 2 for the Game Gear once, but I never knew about the Chaos Emeralds and only got to the last stage with their difficult level select code! XD
Just pulling it off is epic!
