  • My update on the geometron after spending a bit more time on it. Still don't have enough time on it for a full review but I feel like I've ridden it enough to get a good impression of the bike. I want to put a bit more time into it before I give it's final review.

    You nailed it. Apart from boring part, I don't think cornering on it is boring. Just feels right to me.
    G1 owner. I also ride a large.
    I felt at home steering, cornering on firs ride. But the balance points and bunny hops I had to have some time with. About a week or so and it got decent. I'm used to the bike now that's for sure had it since 2019. Throwing it around mid air was heavy feeling but I got used to it pretty fast too. I came from a lighter xcish trailbike to this superb bike.

    Reminds me of my commencal meta sx, just longer and slacker, but super heavy and planted, you can go so fast on these things it's ridiculous, I still like playing on the trail so this bike is insane in that regard, not impossible but exhausting to play with. A true race machine. Great review btw.

    You kind of summed up what I think though I would add that it has loads of grip and the bike is super planted over rough terrain.
    Think you'll love it more with the dual crown too. I'm running a Dorado and a DH shock for 203mm up front and 212mm at the back.

    100% agree on the front centre to rear ratio chat. I got a Kona Process X (490mm reach) and started with chainstays in 435mm as didn't want it to be too long and unwieldy but it was the opposite. Having to try weight the front so much was so unnatural. Chainstays in longer 450mm is game changing. Feel so balanced and easy to transfer your weight etc.
    I don't get how people ride long reach bikes with short chainstays

      I had the same experience with an earlier Geometron (not G1).
      It didn't feel right until I swapped the chainstay "mutators" for longer ones.
      It ended up more or less the same geo as the G1, and noticeably more balanced and easier to turn.

    Still haven`t totally figured out how the Geometron and Nicolai guys are related, but there is obviously a connection. The G1 looks really exciting to me, even more than the Saturn family - would be interesting to have a comparison in ride feel. I was able to get a hold on a Saturn 16 testbike at the festival in Brixen/Italy and was absolutely stoked on the bike`s performance. Cornering felt so good and you could really throw the thing around although beeing a very long bike (490 reach on a M size). At the same time it was so stable - no idea how they managed that. And man, that bike was quiet and composed 🤩

      Geometron guys are suspension wizards and worked with Nicolai (German frame building wizards) to collaborate on the G1. I have a large, I am 5'11" with long arms. It is at the extreme end of reach for me, any shorter and you should go with a Medium.

  • @TheFinnito
    @TheFinnito 7 месяцев назад

    Interesting to hear you thoughts on the G1! I have one in L as mullet and am 5'11" with 188 pounds of weight. I have ended up using a 450 lbs spring in the 175 mm setting. I have now gone to 162 mm and 425 lbs spring and 21 mm seatstay mutators to bring the geo back to normal with a 170 mm fork. The original geo is supposed to be ridden with a 150 mm / 160 mm fork depending on the actual axle to crown dimension of the fork. Using a 170 mm or 180 mm fork slackens everything even further. Other things I changed are a 45 mm rise bar that really helped my balance on the bike, before I had too much weight on the front and got kicked when jumping. I did go from 175 mm to 165 mm cranks, which made a huge difference too. Still thinking if swapping my 210 mm dropper to 240 would be benifical as I have too lean the bike a lot too to be cornering fast. Kepp the good stuff coming. Which spring are you riding atm? Another thought would be to try a mullet set up as this would make it even easier to lean ;). Would like to hear about the differences.

  • @mtbboy1993

    Looks like you might be able to fit a 213mm dropper post, I see you have some post visible. I have 213mm Bikeyoke Revive 2.0. I installed one recently. I had the Divine 185mm, but wanted more travel. For me it works with 165mm cranks.

      Nothing wrong with being a little over-forked for your local trails! Do you know if you can reverse any of the crowns to get a shorter than standard offset? I know Chris Porter from Geometron has been quoted running a 30mm offset.

    Really liking the content lately Brian! Have you experienced the interesting rear end flex-compliance that this bike’s length and layup offers compared to other bikes? What’s your take on that?

    • @briancahal
      @briancahal  7 месяцев назад

      Can’t comment on that in super great detail. Riding position is a lot different so kind of hard to sus out how the flex feels. Maybe the rear end is a little flexy?the weight is in a different spot on the bike so it feels a bit different.

    I see you use Maxxis. I've had terrible lick with Maxxis, they were all faulty, some worse than others, but warped, some badly, but all got wrose with use. The bike was great Bu ti felt the tyres were lacking in the handling and quality department.
    I reccomend putting better handling tyres on, I use Michelin Wild Enduro, they are more stable, corner better, make tracks stands easier, shed mud well, roll well. But knobs crack and the stickier compound wears faster. But bead is like new where as Maxxis would look like I sanded it. I run 30mm rims. But they were even good on 23mm. There might be other create handling tyres. But these are the ones I've tried so far. And loved the handling, feels perfect. Especially on 30mm rims. I had Hightoller2 before. Shorty for muddy season. But now jus tone set of tyres until I put studded tyres on.
    The handling feels perfect now.
    I might try other tyres. But not this year as it's studded tyres season soon.
    But I've not tried the exact combo you run. But I've given up on Maxxis. First tyres I got were not that bad. But rest were just faulty maybe 20 plus tyres. 🤦 As i ran Hightoller2 for some years then started with high roller in summer and Shorty in mud season. After years I had to give up.

      @@briancahal What about if you sized down to one with a 495 reach, do you think that would make it more accessible? I'm 6ft and torn between the 495 or 515, I'm worried the 515 will be too much for our local trails in NC (Pisgah mainly). We have a lot of longer, mellow grade descents with a lot of chunk, it can be high speed but we also have some tighter trails as well.
      Also, maybe I missed it, but how did the suspension performance compare to your Enduro? I had one previously and am curious how it tracked in comparison.

      @@jonk8916 You will appreciate a Geometron size comparison video coming soon. My buddy has the small (475 reach) and we rode them back to back. For what you're describing I think the 495 reach could be the sweet spot.

      @@briancahal Thanks, I look forward to the video. Geometron seems to put me at a L with the 515, but I'm worried that it'll be a handful on the trails we have here, which aren't as steep. The holdup is that I keep getting mixed impressions from folks on sizing, some my height say the M felt too short, others said it was perfect. Anyway, thanks for the info, I'll look out for it.
