  • In this video, I'm talking about my experience playing a 10 man Tempestus Scion Imperial Guard Kill Team in, and how they do a good job of countering Talons of The Emperor and Custodes!
Scions are some of my favorite models in Warhammer 40k and they're pretty fun in the new Kill Team! Let me know what you think.

Thanks, man. Do it! They feel like a really specialized unit to play. With a leader, a comms, a trooper with medkit, 4 gunners and 3 regular dudes, every models feel like they have a specific job. I really like that about them. I did NOT enjoy piloting regular guardsmen though.

Man... you just made me realise that Scions can actually use orders by simply standing in the killzone, not via Guardsman Sergeant. The rule itself has a crucial word "AND" dividing descriptions of orders' usage by Scions and Guardsmen. "(...) All friendly TEMPESTUS SCION operatives and all friendly GUARDSMAN models within [red pentagon] of a GUARDSMAN SERGEANT operative" means that all Scions receive orders, while at the same time Guardsmen need to be within 6" of their Sarge (or have to use comms to relay them). Before that I just thought something was wrong and they designed Scions as "worse" so you would have to mix them with Guardsmen and spend more money... oof. Thanks man, subscribed!

Also each Scion backpack comes with an antenna and Scion Comms operative doesn't relay orders so I guess logically they all use orders given for free by Tempestor. Guardsman Sergeant is kinda neat only because he can give more than one order, but still he has to pay for both a CP each.

@@MrSagaTeller I agree! I mean, I could be wrong, but it would seem weird even for GW to give us guardsmen that get cool orders, and then super elite storm troopers that get nothing.
One of the coolest things about this edition is how each team really feels like they should in the fluff/lore. In my mind, guardsmen need a sergeant to take orders because they need a sergeant screaming at them to motivate them. Scions are elite troops who know what they’re doing with or without a Tempestor on the board.

There's only one correct way to read it in the context it is written. There's two Grammatically Correct ways to read it out of context. The rule: "All friendly Tempestus Scion operatives and all friendly Guardsman operatives within 6" of and Visible to a friendly Guardsman Sergeant operative ..." is a grammatically correct way to refer to either two groups (1 - Scions, 2 - Guardsmen within 6" ...) OR a single collective sharing the modifiers (Scions and Guardsmen). In English when you have something with two grammatically valid readings you are expected to rely on Context Clues to decide which one is correct. In this case, the Compendium entry for Imperial Guard is littered with obvious Context Clues that only work for the "two groups" interpretation and are completely incoherent with the "singular collective" interpretation.
The first clue is "Bring It Down!" on the same page (Compendium 41 - right column). When the text refers to Scions and Guardsman collectively it uses "all friendly Imperial Guard operatives" - not "all friendly Tempestus Scion operatives and all friendly Guardsman operatives."
The second big clue is the deliberate omission of any reference to the Tempestor, but then having the Accomplished Leader ability on him that directly modifies using Strategic Ploys (Compendium 40).
The third big clue is "Relay Orders" on the Guardsman Comms (Compendium 37) - it doesn't relay to Scions, only Guardsman operatives.
The fourth clue goes hand-in-hand with the third: the Scion Comms (Compendium 39) has no Relay ability at all.
The fifth clue is a bit more subtle: nowhere in the book does any Imperial Guard operative "issue" an order. It's all "are issued" the orders - deliberate passive voice. Orders are from Strategic Ploys are given by the Player - not any Operatives. This is a completely different wording from the Veteran Guardsman faction's rules. They deliberately use the active voice ("[this operative] can issue a Guardsman order") for their Guardsman Orders Ability - which are NOT Strategic Ploys but a specific Ability granted to your Leader operative (Octarius 44). People are confusing the Veteran Guardsman ability and the BigHammer way Guardsmen work with the different rules for Strategic Ploys explicitly written for the Imperial Guard Faction in the Compendium.
When faced with two grammatically valid ways of interpreting a sentence, where one is coherent with context and one is incoherent with context, the reading that is coherent with the context is the objectively correct reading of the Rules as Written.

    The Custode Problem.
So I've seen a lot of people who say things like:
    1. Play the mission not the faction.
    2. Just screen them.
    3. Tie them up to slow them down.
    4. Bring a lot of AP weapons.
Now these seem like perfectly reasonable ideas, but let's look at why they don't work as easy as you think.
    1. 4APL means most teams need to throw 2 or more models just to contest (exception being 3APL models with banners). This means that teams will need to put 40% of their models onto 1 objective. It also means they're limited between choosing damage or objective, which custodes don't have to worry about as they do both. This on its own isn't a problem but when combined with everything else they have it is an issue (see other points).
    2. It's very hard to screen a model that can move and charge, or charge twice. Now regardless of your faction, most of your team will not make it further than the center of the board by the end of turn 1. This means you have basically half the board to set up your models and screens. The problem is your screens don't matter because of the custodes speed. Turn 1 they can perform a 17" charge with a pregame move, a free action move for 1CP, and then charge. If you can prevent this then you've bought yourself 1 turn but the problem is that anyone of those models can either move then charge, or charge and charge, in the same way. This means a 14"-16" threat range which is half-more than half the board. If your models are within 8" of each other then that's 16" and potentially 2 dead models. See the problem here, you will always be in range if the custode player moves his 4 models to different points near the middle line of the board.
    3. So to do this you basically charge a model into an already activated custode but you don't fight them. This blocks overwatch and lowers their activation economy for next turn. This is definitely good, but with the ability to fight and shoot twice, combined with the free action, you have a ton of flexibility to counter this. It definitely helps, but not so much if your model can't take at least 2 rounds of combat. Also even if you slow them down, they could still charge or move that model at the end of the phase to set up for next turn, they basically will get the movement they want, but the order might change and it will cost them CP.
    4. AP is good but you will need to ideally shoot a custode without a shield, but even if you do they usually don't die. Let's look at a fully charged plasma rifle. 4 shots on 3's, rerolling 1's will not kill a custode unless you get 3 crits and a hit. This means they can play the trade game very well as you normally need at least 2 power weapons to kill 1 custodian. So whoever you shoot with is now exposed and will likely be killed in their activation. This is a big issue as power weapons are pretty limited for most teams. There are ways you can circumvent this with terrain, who you attack, and positioning, but obviously a good custode player would also play around this.
So what is the take home message here? For me it seems to be a combination of:
    1. Excellent stats.
    2. The ability to gain a free universal action.
    3. Everything costing 1CP.
So I suggest we try playtesting some changes to these 3 areas and report back what we find. Some options I can think for each area is:
    1. I don't think the stats should change but rather the number of models who have them. The 3 custodes team, or the team with sisters might be fine as is.
    2. Needs to be 2CP at least, possibly even only once per game as this ability is what I think makes them brake the game. I personally prefer once per game.
    3. As everything costs 1CP, you can basically fight/shoot twice and use the free action stratagem 3/4 turns (turn 1 you'll likely spend nothing so you'll have 2 a turn till the end of the game). Combine this with the free reroll from seals and you should have plenty of CP. Raising the cost of these would help a lot, but might be too much of a nerf.
I'm hoping GW will actually support us this time, but if they don't then it's important we try playtesting some changes ourselves, otherwise the tournament scene will be "bring gold to take home the gold."

Love the attitude towards custodes. I think people are falling into the trap of complaining after one or two bad games or just jumping on the hype of early changes and support for this awesome new game. And I haven't run them yet, but Scions seem really good! I've heard some complaints about the GW's official Warhammer World tournament that custodes with 4 APL were able to make incredible use of mission actions, but no one seems to extend that thought to Scions. I really hope the orders are clarified soon, and the bump from 7 to 8 wounds also seems to be a game changer! Keep it up man!

haha I was a big ork player in the last edition, but I've been playing with a bunch of different factions (mostly sadhammer though). I'd say I've only played Tactical marines enough to say I'm familiar with them (but I was running Only in Death on any operative, not just ready... so whoops, back to square 1 with them lol). The Kommandos are nuts, but I haven't yet played a game with them against another person, as I feel the concealed charge can feel a bit oppressive to new players, so I'm avoiding that as I introduce buddies to this game. Some of them didn't like the complexity of the past game, so the modern game design of this edition is *so* much better at sinking the hook into new players!

Yeah Scions look really great, currently buiilding a Cadian Kasrkin-esque Scions team. 8 Immortal Necrons; Tanky: Good wounds at 10, regens 2 wounds each turning point, Can use 1CP to maybe reanimate.
Leader + 5 with Gauss Blaster (3+BS, 4/5, AP1); Good shot: 3+ hit, better than bolter damage, AP1.
2 with Tesla Carbine(3+BS, 4/5, Splash 1); Good shot: 3+ hit, better than bolter damage, can use 1CP for Living Lightning on crit.

My Grenade launcher gunner, made mince of my mates castled up tau, all of them took multiple wounds in the blast and took out a shield drone, most of them fell below half wounds, it was nuts!

I think Scions look pretty spicy. I'm not convinced they're actually an answer to Custodes, but they look great in general.
What about 8 Necron Immortals as an anti-Custodes team? 8 models with 3+ saves, 3+ BS, 4 shots dealing 4/5 with AP1. They're possibly the shootiest team in the game. The "Bring it Down" ploy might make Scions better though. I read the ploys the way you do, but no inside knowledge here.

    • @battlebrotherstabletop

Thanks for the comment! I think Immortals looks super scary, but aside from the PTSD they gave me from last edition, what holds them back for me is that 4” movement. I haven’t played them yet, so I’m no authority by any means. I think they would be a really effective team against Custodes aside from their movement.
I like your thinking. A whole team of AP1 is solid.

@@battlebrotherstabletop Great video btw! As a Necron player, I think 8 Immortals *might* work IF (and that's a big "if") you can get the guns on the Custodes (i.e. firing lines). Taking out 1 or 2 Custodes is probably the most important focus in the first 2 TP, and then they can focus on objectives using the March Stragetic Ploy for 6" movement (but no dash, sadly). This is where the 2 HP healing every TP (living metal) and the Reanimation Protocol (on a 3+) might come in handy. It's like having a 9 or 10 (on average) person squad! :P

Really like the edit you made to the comm's pistol to make it a hot-shot lasgun, might just have to try that myself to my comms guy.
As for the rules on how orders work for the scions, I completely agreeing with you on it. It's exactly how I read it as well, that they get orders applied to all of them.
them being able to not use orders at all doesn't make sense, and I feel the rules would have said within 6 inches of your leader, instead of Guardsman sergeant if they wanted it to work the same for both. and again the fact that the scion comms doesn't have the 'relay order' ability just pushes me more in the way of it just applies the orders to all of them if your leader is a Tempestus.

They have 2 Action Points, they can spend one Action Point to activate their unique ability give one other unit an additional AP, and they can only do that once per action. So the Comms guy doesn’t just “give” his AP to others. So really they can only give one other model, 1AP per turn. I’m starting to stipple my armor plates in stages from dark to light instead of painting them a solid color. I’m not saying my execution is awesome, but I think the process of stippling is my interesting that painting a solid color.
I used all Vallejo for the oranges/browns.
      Base coat of black.
      1. Stipple on Vallejo Heavy Siena over all armor
      2. Stipple a mix of Heavy Siena and Heavy Orange.
      3. Stipple on a mix of Heavy Orange and Orange Fire.
      4. Final stipple highlight with just Heavy Orange.
Not quite a million, but it’s not as bad as it sounds 😅 stippling is less painstaking than normal painting IMO.

      @battlebrotherstabletop  2 года назад +2

@@chris.o510 Hey Christian! Well first off, I think it’s hilarious that they chose to go with “gun butt” over “gun stock” or something.
But to answer your question, it’s just a crappy melee weapon. If not the worst, one of the worst melee options in the game that a lot of grunts or shooting focused teams have. Scions, though have a cool, one point piece of equipment called the Scion Blade which bumps a models melee up to 3/4 damage. But any weapon that only rolls 3 dice is still pretty rough.

  • @Ivan-Shved

Hi! I can't agree with that. The scions have been crushed by talons during the recent tournament in Kiev with the overall score of 2/14, because talons couldn't finish acomplishing some of the secondaries.
That tournament has shown the critical difficulties of picking the scion secondaries. Due to my researchers, the recon seems to be stronger than other archetypes, but it is pretty unreliable (((
The only tactical ploy if the guard is strong against custodes, but usually you will have no CPs to spend for that opportunity because there are so many sweet strategic ploys that you won't ever have enough CPs.
Also, the melta and plasma dudes are usually the first to fall to the custodes shooting. After their incapacitation you have nothing to shoot talons efficiently. It usually is a good idea to sacrifice one custodian to kill that two dudes because the only threat to face would be the most valuable model in the scion list- the tempestor.
The idea of a +-"horde" team against custodes is a bad idea due to the crushing 3+ overwatch attacks.
The harlequins are strong against talons because of the domino field, almost ignoring overwatch.
The scions have only 3 decent models to fight custodes. They are a plasma pistol, plasma gun and meltagun. The grenade launcher isn't efficient rnough and the volleygun's damage is too low to hurt a custodes.

    • @battlebrotherstabletop
      @battlebrotherstabletop  3 года назад

Healthy Disagreement! Do you think it's because Scions are straight up a bad choice against Talons, or was it poor piloting by the Scions player?
In my experience, if you can get your deployment and positional play right, you can counter talons rather well compared to other teams. I would agree that hordes are a bad strategy against Talons, I would argue that Scions are not a horde team.
I think once you've popped the "Bring it Down" ploy, the grenade launcher and the Hot Shot Volley are effective when you're re-rolling everything.
I'm not saying that Scions wipe the floor with Custodes every time, but I am saying that Scions have a lot going for them and are a great option to take against Custodes.
I agree hordes have almost no chance against them, but Marines don't do very well either. Custodes eat marines for lunch, and they can do it in only 2 turns because of the low marine model count.
Harlequins are a great choice because of how positional you can be, I totally agree.
I think the Tempestor, and all 4 gunners are all great against Custodes when you are stacking everything and not giving them easy targets.
I really appreciate your input on this, and would love to hear what you think would be a good counter to Tallons other than Harlequins. Thanks for the comment!

Although I've played >30 games of KT2, I've never faced harlequins. Such a pity!
The tyranids (warriora and genestealers) is the only faction to counter the talons according to my experience. 18 wounds, 5 attacks and -1 attack are great to fight custodes, genestealers perform pretty well during suicidal charges.
Minimal experience against the guard grants a talon player an easy victory. The custodes are definitely broken and need a fix.
I'd say that about harlequins, but this must be explored in the nearest future. I'd love to see some content about them)

I think they're so great because not only do you have the scion comms shifting points of APL around, but you can stack multiple strat ploys. Turn you can use the reroll 1s ploy for free and then pay a cp to use the one that gives you an extra inch of movement if you need to get somewhere fast. Or use the special forces one that lets you interact objectives for 1 less APL than normal.

    • @Dracodomin
      @Dracodomin 3 года назад +1

They will. The thing you have to look out for is consistency though. Stealth boi hits on 4s. Even with Markerlight, you on average get 2.5 hits. Custodes even without Stormshield blocks almost half that. You end up doing around 12 wounds I believe on average. Which is not bad. But what happens when the average doesn't happen, and you don't kill that Custard? You lost your way to deal with them. I have notoriously bad dice rolling luck(It seems rare that I average out), so I can't plan on that working. That's why his suggestion is Scions, or something of the like. The averages are much much higher, hitting on 3s, rerolling 1s, and not having to be within 6.
Edit: Your question is definitely not dumb though.

    • @battlebrotherstabletop

It is worded poorly, but in my opinion everything including context clues points to the fact that Scions get order automatically, but a guardsmen sergeant is required to give orders to guardsmen.
It makes sense that Scions would automatically get it fluff-wise because they all have vox radios or whatever. The Tempestor also has the ability to give a free order, plus the the comms doesn’t have the relay ability. This all leads me to believe all Scions get orders automatically with or without a Tempestor, but a tempestor allows you to use an order for free.
