    this is one of the funniest movies ever made. Jack Lemmon is beyond hilarious as Professor Fate and Prince Friedrich Hapnick, as well as the greatest pie fight scene in history. For me the added attraction was sound effects from the classic WB cartoons. I think I'll watch it tonight. A double 👍👍.

    Every now and then, I feel the uncontrollable need to rewatch this film. I've seen it dozens of times. In my misspent youth, I caught it whenever it was broadcast, but even now, with DVD in hand, I rewatch it, even though I can recite large segments from memory. This was and is the ultimate guilty pleasure, a real feel-good film. No higher message (though one could have argued that the women's rights theme was the message at the time). But what joyous fun. Innocent, but not prudish. I showed this to a friend who immigrated here from Russia, and she was, genuinely, tearful with delight.
    I'm glad I grew up when I did, because nothing like this could be made now.

    I saw The Great Race with my younger brother in '65. We _still_ refer back to bits from this movie. In the meantime, everything else has evolved and we are where we are in the present day. However, any time I watch this movie I can tap-into contemporaneous memories that were made when first seeing this 59 years ago.

    One of the funniest comedies I remember seeing! Fell in love with it as a youngster, my older brother took me to see it.. The pie fight scene is a masterpiece! (I read somewhere that they had to do numerous partial retakes because Tony Curtis got hit by pies accidentally.) Looking back, I object to the idea that the man is almost always right and that Natalie Wood had gratuitous corset scenes. (Same with "Penelope" another favorite of mine.) I'd have never caught the subtle costume change for Curtis until my brother pointed it out, without ever really explaining it.

    • @joshs4594
      @joshs4594 2 года назад +1

      The Great Leslie (dressed in white) and Professor Fate (dressed in black) were a caricature of the old fashioned good guy vs. bad guy silent films of the early 20th century. Natalie Wood was not only a sex symbol but she was a great actress and brilliantly funny in this movie. Her "gratuitous" scenes were done with class and no nudity. There isn't a movie or TV show today without far more gratuitous scenes with their female characters.

      The Jack Lemmon scene is from the courtroom climax of "How To Murder Your Wife." If you've seen the movie, you'll recall this memorable scene: With a murder conviction seemingly inevitable, Lemmon fires his attorney and takes over his own defense. Noting the all male jury, Lemmon then makes a gloating confession to the murder (which he didn't commit) and claims justifiable homicide, implying that justifiable homicide would be valid for any man who killed his wife. The jurors, reflecting on their own marriages, enthusiastically acquit Lemmon and carry him off on their shoulders.
      By the way, his wife does finally return in the final scene and it can be assumed they live a long and happy life together. Even so, I don't think this movie would fly today. 😀
