When the friendship between director Blake Edwards and composer Henry Mancini began in 1958 with a little TV series called “Peter Gunn”, they surely couldn’t have imaged that they would walk on a winning-streak from then on, continuously. In 1965, after the successes of “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”, “Days Of Wine And Roses” and “The Pink Panther” the colorful comedy spectacular “The Great Race” would be released in cinemas around the globe. Although it had a certain “Those Magnificent Men And Their Flying Machines” feel to it (both came out the same year), it stands as its own.
The acting of the main cast (Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood and Peter Falk) is great, the plot is funny, the imagery is superb and the music - fantastic.
Mancini composed a lengthy score of which just 30 minutes found their way on a soundtrack album but thanks to La-La Land Records the entire film score (plus the original album) has been given a delightful and generous 3-CD release and presents not only some of the known material but the entire and colorful original film score, including various arrangements of the lovely waltz “The Sweetheart Tree”, which appears in this video as instrumental in the Main Titles, as a solo-vocal interpretation and as the heartful album-esque recording with orchestra and choir in the Exit Music. Enjoy!

The Great Race is my favorite movie. I watch it a couple of times a year in my humble movie theater that I built at home. Popcorn, drinks and the movie with intermission included.
In fact, the lights slowly fade out. The presentation menu is typical of the 80's in movie theaters. Tom and Jerry or Donald Duck cartoons, German UFA documentary, trailers from the 80's, then films from 2024. THX sound presentation. And, then the fun begins. What is Classic will never go out of style. So my friend, as General Zod said: -YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
Fact: The Great Race served as inspiration for the Hanna Barbera cartoons The Wacky Races cartoons.
It was left in the inkwell: the ambient music, and depending on the film, it is always the OST of the film I am going to see. That's it. Greetings and 🖖🖖

This brings back a train-load of memories from my childhood and youth! First saw it in a theater in North Dallas at it's '67 release (the place was packed). Mancini is a genius; as is Black Edwards. "Professor" Lemmon, Jail-window bar Falk, Tooth-sparkle Curtis and drop-dead gorgeous in a Corset Woods are classic! And, the "Leslie Special" (like Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang) is the icing on the cake of this movie! Thanks for posting!

we need more movies like these, funny and a bit slapstick. I was fortunate to see the cars at Warner Bros when the movie was about to premier. I'm not sure how my Aunt got tickets, but was great fun. My favorite song is now is, He Shouldn't Outta Swang on Me. The words are hilarious, and then there's pie fight. What a mess! Jack Lemmon and Peter Faulk where great! Sad that it wasn't a box office success and that they never did a sequel, Paris to New York. It was really our loss that we couldn't watch this ensmble once again. In the words of Professor Fate, Push the button, Max!

It's such a beautiful melody and he did one of the greatest piano solo's over the whole dang thing.

One of the many wonderful scores Henry Mancini did for the films of the legendary director Blake Edwards! Just about the perfect balance between composer and director-Mancini always seemed to capture the spirit of Edwards’ films every time! PS-one of the few Blake Edwards films NOT scored by Henry Mancini was the underrated 1974 film “The Tamarind Seed” starring Julie Andrews(Mrs.Blake Edwards) and Omar Sharif-one of the dramas from Mr.Edwards plus a score by the equally legendary composer-the incomparable John Barry! Worth seeing!!PS-it sometimes appears on TCM!!!

That is one of my favorite songs from this soundtrack but unfortunately it’s cut short in the video and I can’t find it anywhere else, the only full soundtracks released were the re-recordings of only a handful of songs from the film. Like “Push the Button Max!” was re-released but I like how “Enter Professor Fate” sounds like a waltz version of his theme and it played whenever he was performing his stunts. Hallo Fred.
    Echo hier.

    • @SoundtrackFred
      @SoundtrackFred  3 года назад +1

      Hallo Echo,
