My favourite film score. I have been listening to it for sixty-one years and I never tire of it. What a privilege to watch Maestro Rózsa himself conduct it.
To Daruma: you are lucky. Really.
I was child and I'll never forget the time I heared this musik by whatching Ben Hur to the cinema of my village in South Italy.
It’s literally music from the heavens thank you Mastero Rosza for Gods music , have been listening for many years now and always I will listen to this music from the heavens for all time.
Nothing will ever surpass this score. It was Rozsa's crowning achievement. It was perfection on every level. Each character had their own theme and yet it never detracted from the film.
Love this music
Awesome musical score to the GREATEST movie of all time - BEN -HUR.
It engulfs ones, Soul. Especially Jesus’s, music.
✨✝️🕊✨
MAGNIFICENT!
Greatness...🌎🌍🌏🙏
I was extremely fortunate to attend Dr.Rózsa's classes at UCLA. As well as a musical genius and superb conductor he was such a generous and charming man.
What's his method like?
This is probably the most extraordinary overture ever committed by mankind.
Its 2023....and this score is still one of the bests ever made!
I get goosebumbs when its starts with that BAAM BAAM BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMM everytime.... 😄
This is arguably Rozsa's magnum opus, and he conducts it as I remember first hearing it. This is not only a film score--it's an epic symphonic poem.
Kirsten, I don't think anyone has ever described it as aptly and beautiful as you. You hit the nail on the head.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Jim R!
I couldn't have said it any better, Kirsten!
Yes, this is a wonderful performance by the maestro himself. I have listened to this wonderful music since I was 7, and still am listening to it. I could say that I can not live without it.
"This is not only a film score - it's an epic symphonic poem". Kirsten, the best description ever.
What makes this even more amazing for me is WATCHING Miklos Rozsa passionately conduct his masterpiece. He put his heart in this soundtrack. What a true artist! I've heard other versions of this soundtrack, but they all lack that special Miklos Rozsa touch. I love this movie and the soundtrack! It's refreshing to see other people appreciate and enjoy it as much as I do!!
Today's digital soundtrack not available back then lifts his music and instruments into an unforgetable level of perfection. My children now enjoy this greatest of films in a personal way. Miklos Roza was a musical genius.
The Greatest Movie ever made !!
The greatest Film score ever composed!❤
I do agree! Greetings from Brazil.
What an amazing sound. That brass. Those strings. Rozsa looking every inch the maestro that he was. This footage is priceless.
Miklos Rozsa---true genius. Beautiful music.
The greatest movie score every written.

That's For Sure
Your opinion. Others may not agree with you.
Yes, it's your opinion...and it's mine!! ;-D
Well he is amazing ... I liked El Cid even more but beauty of such proportions is so difficult to quantify.
The music score that nailed Miklos an Oscar..This guy was and still is untouchable!
He should have won an Oscar for his soundtrack to King of Kings. but that movie wasn't as successful as Ben-Hur so he didn't get the credit he deserved.
Alone on a desert island. One album. Ben Hur.
The White Album!
Alone on a desert island, one album, "The Temptations Live At The Copa"...and nowhere to plug in my turntable!😫😫😫😫😫
Takes a musical genius to create music like this, and there's the orchestra. Incredible!
When my parents took us to see the movie in 1959, they were selling the boxed record set of the soundtrack in the movie lobby. My father purchased it for me, and I still have it. Listen to it occasionally on my turntable...Nothing beats vinyl to get this sound....Still brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to this soundtrack....
I got one of those too. It has a book inside.
I too saw the movie, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood in 59'. They had the original chariot used by Mesala outside by the entry. I came away with the full color program, and later my parents bought me the album. In my top 10 movies.
When i was 11 or 12 yrs old i saw this Movie with my Dad in the biggest cinema in our town, incl Overture and intermission...it was so impressive, and there is no Flat screen who can bring this movie to live like a dark big cinema filled with people...I love you Dad and this will be forever OUR Movie...
I’m not crying 😭
i went alsof with my dad i will never forget that
The greatest score to the greatest film ever made. Still the record holder for most Oscars and international awards than any film ever made. Second only to GWTW for the most tickets ever sold to a motion picture. Acclaimed like no other film, not before and not since.
The GREATEST Ever should not be used to describe one's favorite movie - because it is ALL a Matter of Individual likes and dislikes !
In my opinion the greatest score ever made.
Yes!!!
I heard this fantastic score as an 8 year old child with a Church group. Back then in Chicago it was at a beautiful theater. So much larger than life. Wow it was one of my best childhood experiences. So beautiful. I still play it often.
And his soundtrack to King of Kings was just as good.
@@robertshaw7132 I agree
A musical genius conducting his own masterpiece. It doesn't get any cooler.
Eternal masterpiece!!! Miklos Genius!!!
I'm never tired of listening to this awesome musical score. As I close my eyes to listen to this wonder, it takes me back in time when the story takes place and leaves me wander away with my thoughts!!
The greatest film EVER made. I've seen the best, like Casablanca, Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, but none of those, or any other, can beat Ben Hur.
It is a perfect movie, the top, the truly, the genuine epic. Great plot, outstanding actings, Charlton Heston making a brilliant performance, the supporting characters like Messala, Balthazar and Sheik Ilderin doing a hell of a job...
And the soundtrack. Well, the soundtrack is beautiful. Is a masterpiece composed by the genius Miklos Rosza. Sometimes i cant hold my tears watching it.
By the way... I'M AN ATHEIST !
"EVER made"? This is wonderful, but I do not think the generalisation is warranted. There are many fine European (and Soviet) films, of a quite different sort. To say that Ben Hur is the greatest ever, is like comparing an apple with many pears. Quite different categories.
George Berger We all know US (and some Italian and Brits) movies are the best. But i understand your point.
Ben hur is outstanding but first part is much better than the second which is to theatrical IMO
George Berger Just because there are many fine European and Soviet films doesn't mean "Ben Hur" can't be the greatest film ever made. Not saying it is, but that doesn't mean it can't be.
Yeah, that's what they thought about THE PHANTOM MENACE before it came out.
The human spirit at its best. Whenever I am depressed by how terrible the world is I hear this symphonic poem because it reminds me the greatness of the humankind.
This masterpiece gives me chills every time i hear it.
Unforgettable Miklos Rozsa
It asctually changed my life, when I first saw it. I was 14 when I first saw it and I am 60 now and I love the film as much as I did bac
k then.
Literally gives goosebumps to hear this soundtrack.
BEN HUR: I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS SHIVERS!!!! I'M SPEECHLESS WHEN I HEAR THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC THAT SENDS ME
TO ANOTHER DIMENSION!!! I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT MUSIC MUST BE LIKE IN HEAVEN!! IT MUST BE INCOMPARABLE!!! TQ KINDLY FOR YOUR COMMENT!!! MANY GREETINGS + BLESSINGS! !! 😊
Who needs actors with a score as this. I see the entire film just listening.
ningún actor como charlton heston
An dvd special edition haves this option
Finest film score in film history. I dare say it won't be matched. I've never seen the man before, this is a very special treat. And this was during some of the best days for the Pittsburgh Symphony. Previn had them very precise.
+B Davis
Indeed. One of those rare moments in time when a great movie is matched by an equally great soundtrack.
Music must be from the heavens , go to a higher level of life when hearing Rozsa’s spectacular music from Ben Hur.
Insuperable 💯
Miklos with every cord you strike in me the greatness of being alive. You bring heaven to earth. Truly a gifted man! How lucky I was to be here on earth when you wrote these eternal pieces.
Miklos Rozsa (RIP) was a musical genius. Ben Hur set the bar so high it is seldom equaled, has not been surpassed, and I doubt it ever will be. "Spellbound Concerto," also by Miklos Rozsa, is another extraordinary masterpiece. I'm transcended--have an "out of body" experience, every time I listen to these, soul moving scores.
I have that out-of-body experience when I hear his soundtracks to King of Kings and El Cid.
Actually, i have Spellbound Concerto as the second best Rozsa's piece, many will point scores like Quo Vadis or King of Kings, but for me it'll have to be The El Cid March.
1. Ben Hur Suite
2. Spellbound Concerto
3. The El Cid March
Brilliant composer, brilliant score, brilliant band. What more can I say??
Miklos Rozsa was best-known for the music of dozens of 'sword-and-sandals' epics from the 50's and 60's, and he was, indeed, the master of that genre. If we want to compare, one could put Max Steiner's 1939 masterwork for "Gone With the Wind", so good that David O. Selznick waited until literally the last minute to add it to the final cut, or John Williams' original 1977 "Star Wars" music, which is still being played 40 years on. All three men are masters of their craft, and each would probably defer to the other when asked. Great work by Previn's Pittsburgh Symphony for faithfully recreating the sound and feel of the original, with Rosza himself at the helm.
Bravo Maestro Rozsa...Heavenly!
Simply the best music and for me, the best film of all time in my lifetime, a true epic if ever there was one - it will be hard for anyone to beat this.
I love this music. There are many brilliant and ingenious film scores written by incredible composers, but as a musician / composer, I find this work at the top. The emotion and ability to express the story and Rozsa's incredible music visualization is powerful. His compositional skills were a perfect match for these type of Hollywood epics, and yet his music stands by itself as mastery works. The movie is brilliant, and so is it's composer.
There is film music, and then there is film music, and then there is this....the sublime beauty of this music is really unmatched.
Chris Thorton So was the incredibly gorgeous Haya Harareet in the role of 'Esther'. Jewish beauty at its finest.
Thank YouVery Much, Mr. Rozsa!
Oh My God My Heart almost stopped when i listen to miklos rozsa music he returned me to the fifties era
'Judah meets Esther' is probably the most emotional tune I have ever heard. Long live the Maestro's music!
This is the best and greatest picture I have seen in my lifetime.
Because it helps you to grow spiritually. And the actor Charlton Heston became my
famous actor.
Yes!!!!
Years ago, he came to Birmingham Alabama to a Book a Million deparment store, near where ws were living, to sign or promote his book , I think it was "Blood and Sand", or something like this, and, that day I went there to buy something, and, what a surprise!,,There he was, very tall and handsome, kind to everybody, smiling, very humble, and very patient, too, signing all those books. So, I took some photos of him, and I decided to send them to my country, so my sister could have them, because, she admired him very much...Well, I found out, later, that my sister, never received those photos!!...They were "lost"!....What a pity!!!.....But, I am very thankful, I saw him!.....
Became your FAVORITE actor
Wow just wow... Thx God for miklos and Willie wyler and chuck
Listening to this still moves me to tears. Spectacularly beautiful and spiritual.
One of the greatest film score of all time! Awesome conductor and music...... forever remembered.
Absolutely masterful!
Love this. Incredible music by a great composer and fabulous orchestra.
we are witnessing an epic of epics in artistic genius. Miklos Rosza should have a monument built. Seriously.
Great Masterpiece
I loved his music without knowing it. He provided the background to these historical movies... If History has a sound, it is Miklos.
Miklós Rózsa the master at work. Makes me proud to be part Hungarian.
Magyar zseni:)
@Roselyne Walter ???
@Roselyne Walter You claimed something/somebody is "silly". What/who is silly and why?
@Roselyne Walter I do not think I'm a moron. You had written a one word statement -"Silly" - and I wanted to understand what you meant. I Just asked and you did not answer, but offend. It is strange at least, if not messaging you are a moron.
@Roselyne Walter Take your meds.
Yeah, this movie is amazing. I have seen it dozens of times - I know lots of the dialogue by heart - and it never gets old. And a lot of it is Rozsa's amazing score.

The Pittsburgh Symphony is as good as any in the world to be able to duplicate this incredible piece as they did here. The emotion, the crispness and balance is truly impressive!
From my favorite movie of all time!......💓🎥🏆🎬🎞️🎶💓
Mine too 😊
THIS IS THE MUSIC WE MISS
A Magical Masterpiece!
And God reached down and touched the soul of a man with his music and that man was Miklos Rozsa. And Rozsa shared the warmth and love of God with tone and form and melody and here is his lasting gift, which will live on beyond his mortal life. Truly not just the voice, but also the music of God. God bless you, PRMancini007, for posting this wonderful clip.
. . . me thinks it is ALL of Miklos Rozsa's doing - any mystical god has Nothing to do with it !
Amen
A musical masterpiece. Simply, the best ever, by THE best ever to compose for film. Today's composers are good; this man was THE master. ----------Wolfsky9
Please do not delete this from you tube.
Played this at full belt on my ipad walking around the circus Maximus in Rome with open toed sandals, for ten minutes I was Ben Hur
ha awesome me and my hubby did the same!
Great
Everytime when i be in Pula (Croatia) in front of the ancient Arena (google this) i have that score in my head...no wonder that Rosza wrote that into the collosseum in rome.
Except the film scene was set in a supposed Jerusalem Circus.
I can’t go to the collesium. There’s no way I could without screaming “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!”
Sin Palabras.....
Solamente Escuchar...
Gracias Miklos
The fact that someone saw the movie and wrote this music is simply amazing-Wow
So majestic and beautiful.
The greatest epic ever
Watching Dr. Rozsa conduct is such a Treasure. This video is a cherished Treasure. Such command and such brilliance!
the greatest orchestra ever i watched
Thanks for posting. A magnificent composition and what a rousing rendition from Rozsa and this top class orchestra!Sounds quite similar to the version he also conducted for the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, just 2 years earlier for Decca records. Love the tempo here - it's slower and has greater impact than the original soundtrack for the 1959 film.Wonderful to see - and hear - this.
Yes, I agree, it makes me feel part of...... Greatest composer ever, thank you maestro M.Rozsa!!!!

Absolutely incredible performance. You can see how devotedly the orchestra was playing ... *for* Rozsa as well as for the beauty of the piece itself. I wonder if U.S. Civil War (and Union) General Lew Wallace realized how great was this wonderful work of our Judeo-Christian society and culture he was creating.
The second selection at 3:54 is my favorite. Just beautiful.

MUSICA Y PELICULA MAGISTRAL.-
This is a master in action, one of the best films ever made or likely to be made, one of the best stories ever told and memories of my youth. To all those who have never seen the film I wish you the same feelings I had as a boy, wonder and love for Christ
The film was a bore for me, I have no time for religion or politics, the music however was exquisite.
Never tired of this!!
Truly incredible !!
These are the absolute gems, now preserved on youtube, that I hope generations can enjoy
Dr Rozsa was an accomplished conductor as well.
No shit, Sherlock..obviously he was.
Ben Hur nationwide showing 60th anniversary April 14th and 17th...go on line to get tickets! So excited for the big screen showing!
THE best soundtrack, for the most honoured film! On the back of my LP is a photo of Miklos Rozsa walking around the ruins of the Roman Forum, ‘absorbing the atmosphere’, he said.
Well, it worked as he produced a masterpiece!
Superbe !
Cordialement.
Je suis tout a fait d'accord.

Magnificent musicians working in unison under an unparalled master...M.R. The score pulls us in ever deeper to touch and release emotions that are truly sublime.
yes. absolutely. music goes where other things stop and reach part of our selves and pull a story along and underline emotional situations. the score for ben hur so obviously is a success in this--this is the beauty and power of film at its finest...
Beautifully done. That cymbal crash was AWESOME !!! A total masterpiece!
there is so much passion in Miklos Rozsa's music ... you can feel it.
