This is why nobody goes to the cinema anymore. When you hear the prelude to Ben Hur, you knew you were about to see something epic before anything happens on screen. There are very few composers around who can write music like this now -- maybe John Williams.
Working as a cameraman for PBS, I had the opportunity to visit Rózsa at his studio a year or so before he passed on. We hit it off very well, and he was quite friendly and open during the interview. One of the most thrilling moments was when he opened his safe and presented us with the original manuscript for "Ben Hur", which was bound in red silk. You can imagine what it was like to flip through it and read the score in his own hand. (I still get goosebumps when I remember it.) Of course when he realized that I could sight read his score, he opened up even more. "Would you like to know where I got my inspiration from?" he asked. Naturally, I did. He pressed a button and the curtains covering the entire northern side of his studio opened to reveal the San Gabriel Mountains, just above Glendale, in all their splendor. Touching that score was better than holding an Oscar. It was 2 of the most enjoyable hours I ever spent in Hollywood.
My father visited me in the boarding school one Sunday afternoon in 1959 and took me down to Lugano to see BEN HUR After that I saw this unequaled masterpiece many more times all over the world. And my long gone Papi still liven with me watching this beautiful great film
I first saw Ben Hur at the ABC in Nottingham as a teenager back in 1961 and have the LP soundtrack, book of the making of the film and have seen it many times since then. To me it's the greatest film ever made. The soundtrack is excellent and the chariot scene is the best piece of filming I have ever seen.It is truly a masterpiece.
One of the greatest Hollywood composer of all time.He along with Alex North,Dimitri Tiomkin,Max Steiner,Aaron Copland,Bernard Hermann and Elmer Bernstein ruled Hollywood for many years.Undoubtly this is one of his best.Benhur was not a mere movie but dream project of William Wyler.👍👍👍👌
I'm a fan of Dimitri Tiomkin but I think, for example, that Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for the film "The mission" is an absolute masterpiece. For me the titans of film scoring are Williams, Morricone, Rosza and Tiomkin here in no particular order.
I don't believe in this or that being the greatest. Let us just enjoy those we consider great. That being said, what a marvelous film score this one is.
I was a lucky man (film projectionist) to show this 'epic movie' in the wonderful and original 70MM format, 12 'heavy' reels, running with 2 PHILIPS TODD-AO DP70 projectors, it was the best time of my life! (1973-........)

Ben Hur the best film ever made, the best sound track ever composed and Charlton Heston a magnificent actor in the role of Judah Ben Hur. Ben Hur, the movie is full of hope and love, reflects the love of Jesus our Lord and always moves me to tears! Thank you for this magnificent movie! A Dutch RC Christian. May the Lord bless you all!
I ' ve followed Ben Hur since I was a child. I consider Ben Hur as the best work written for the cinema ever seen. A wonderful soundtrack that is and will continue to be a gift to many who cherish Ben Hur.
I agree completely. I have done and feel the same and I'm nearly 70 years old. I had my Sunday school class of 13 and 14 year olds come to my home on a Saturday and watch it. I would quote some of the movie lines in my Sunday school lessons. "In his eagerness to save you, your God has also saved the Roman fleet", "Does that interest you 41? I can see that it does." "What has he done to merit this?" And so many more.
I think you are 100% correct in praising the script, because I did try to read Lew Wallace’s original work and had to admit that the novel wasn’t so good as I thought it should be.
I grew up watching this, Ben Hur is the only movie that makes me cry like a baby the beautyful way the protray the crusifixtion of Jesus never seems to not make me weep
Ben Hur was or may have been the greatest film of all time with one of the best actors of all time Mr. Charlton Heston. a great great actor of film and screen. he was gifted and talented. and a sports man. he was always in shape, and had to be for the demand he also had on his body,in films.and stage actor.God Bless you always Chuck.
Gran Dios!!!!
In the spring of 1972 our high school band played a concert band arrangement of some of the music from Ben Hur. Learning it may me fall in love with movie sound track music, have been a fan of it ever since. And I still love the "big" musical sound of the movies of this time period.
OF...ALL...TIME!!! Beyond Epic!!! Life changing!!! I was 8 or 9 years old when I saw Ben Hur in a movie theater with a wide screen when it 1st came out (i was born in November 1951) ~ the theater was filled with priest's & nun's & bus loads of youngster's taken out on field trip's in 7th & 8th grades from school. It had a powerful effect on cementing my faith in Christianity! Did you know that General Lew Wallace showed his script/book to an atheist & the atheist became a believer?! Awesome fact; reinforces my faith & increases the value of this magnificent one of a kind film! Miklos Rosa was born to compose this score; as Stephen Boyd was born to play Masala & Heston to be Ben Hur! This story was not in the Bible; but It Could Have Been! Greatest Film Ever Made!!!
Miklos Rozsa! The GOAT! Nuff said! ❤ It warms my heart to see so many people who appreciate the fine art of classic cinema and music as I do! God bless! ❤
William Wyler’s epic classic Ben-Hur won 11 Academy awards when there were only 12 categories. It is a monumental achievement as compared to Titanic and Lord of the Rings which won 11 Oscars when there are 18 categories. Ben-Hur’s achievement is historic and colossal. ✌️
Maybe I'm an old fashioned, but I, personally, cannot put Lord of the Rings alongside Ben Hur. I realize these films all bagged numerous Oscars, but the CGX of LOR seemed too busy and impersonal.
@@yaffayafo82 In fairness to *Lord of the Rings,* the trilogy couldn't have been done any other way. CGI was the only way to translate that story from page to screen without chopping the material to pieces (as John Boorman's notorious failed attempt at adapting it would have). Practical FX wouldn't have been nearly enough to pull off the task.
When I saw this motion picture in 1959 I haven't forgot in all that time how this made me fill. Thank GOD we have motion Pictures and music sound tracks to listen to for we will never see or hear it's likes again. This wonderful movie and sound track brings real talent and true artistry which we will never see in this day and age , (OUTSTANDING )
I saw this movie together with my Dad when i was 10 yrs old in the biggest Theatre in my hometown (with two balcony, big entrance etc) in 1974 and it was the biggest thing i can remember. This year i invited my dad at easter to watch this Movie on Blue Ray again and only for this i bought a new 66 " flat screen TV. Because its our most favorite movie and you cant watch Ben Hur on a small screen. This nice old man turns 87 this year and i dont know how long we can be together. Maybe we can share another big movie this year on Christmas and watch The Ten Commandments.
You saw this in theaters? Man I would have given anything to have been there in 1959 with the crowd, discussing the movie at intermission in the lobby while getting popcorn.
There will never be a time like the epics, songs and movies. This bring tears to my eyes listening to the music of Ben hur!!! This man who create this had truly a gift from God. Thanks and God bless you!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😉😄
You should see the film itself, I mean... this was before there was CGI crowds and sets! They didn't have any COMPUTERS in fact! Even if they did use computers, they probably would have to be the sizes of whole planets! They had to get all those extras (over 10,000), 300 sets scattered over 148 acres of land and nine sound stages, all built in Rome, and enough costumes to send Rarity into a whole month of sleep deprivation, and yet they still got enough to get Charlton Heston to play the title character! Man! 15 million dollars can get you a lot in 1959, I mean, this was a time when you could get a hamburger for just... What? 15 cents? If I could get back in time, I'd bring with me three quarters and see the movie in theaters myself (tickets back then costed only 68 cents). But still, I say the score matches the film's scope. Man, Hungary's got lots of talented people.
Every time when there is the theme plays the presence of our Lord, it put cold shivers in me! I love this soundtrack. Without the soundtrack there is no movie! Ben Hur is one of the best epics of all times!
I cannot think of a movie that conveys such amazing history and the music, is epic. I was born in 1959, the year Ben Hur came out. The score is utterly amazing. Every detail. Nothing left to chance. One watches the movie, sees and hears the actors, the action, but it is this beautiful score that keeps everything moving along. Everything about this movie, the actors, the scenery, the messages, the various stages, the costumes and of course, the music is of the highest standards and quality. The movie itself is my personal favorite. My favorite scene. The chariot racing. Which was done in absolute stunning detail. So many scenes were amazing, but it was, in the end this most beautiful score that made it all come completely together. 🌹
AAAHHH!!! EPIC OF EPICS INDEED !!!! SEEN THIS MOVIE MILLIONS OF TIMES !!!! TIMELESS!!! INDEED R.I.P. TO ALL INVOVLED IN MAKING OF " BEN HUR" 1959. AND THE SUPER GREAT CASTING TOO!! AND THE THUNDEROUS MUSIC OF MILKLOS ROZSA. R.I.P. TO HIM . TRANSPORTED TO A.D. 33. FROM U.K. (2023)
Masterpiece movie. Masterpiece music. And Heston. Wow! I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it. Never get tired of this awesome moving story. And the emotional, ultra - powerful soundtrack is for me one of the greatest most inspiring, and awesome musical creations regardless of genre.
This movie (and its wonderful soundtrack) was part of our Christmas trilogy with my late Dad. Every christmas we watched Ben Hur, The Thief of Bagdad and The Time Machine together. :) Good memories.
I would rank miklos score for the thief of Baghdad every bit as great as ben her. There is an innocent freshness In scenes like after sabu steals the keys and the 8 arm statue coming to life. So many different instruments used. I miss that in his more later films.
Shalom🌿 Ben Hur is my all time Favorite movie!!! Of Course, Miklos Rozsa Is my Favorite Composer, For All His Wondrous and Majestic Movie Scores❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm a big fan of soundtracks, en passant a fellow countrymen of Miklós Rózsa (He arrived to the States from Hungary...) I heard a lot of soundtrack albums - at least from 1000 movies and games - but with good heart and confidence I can tell Ben Hur's ost is one of the most complete, greatest, detailed, emotional, etc soundtrack of history. I cannot count the positive markers... With all due respect I have to ask a question from those who doesn't like these tunes: "Guys, what's the matter with you?" :)
Almost at the moment he died, I heard him say Father forgive them, they know not what they do. Even then. EVEN THEN. And I felt his words take the sword out of my hand. Marvelous dialog, brilliantly acted. Love this film.
I’ve had the honor of watching it in theaters for the 60th anniversary of the film, and I have never heard anything so masterfully beautiful. I’ve watched it from my tv which is entirely a different feeling, but when you see it in the theater, I could not stop crying and was in awe.
And sometimes the music in "Spellbound " and "The Lost Weekend" sound like it. When Don Birman is looking for his liquor bottle, I'm saying, "He's in the desert again!!"
@@chrisroger8774 Ben Hur is the best movie e er made. You can find all the atributes you need for a great adventure. No movie can does it before and after.

One could run out of adjectives trying to convey the sweeping grandeur of Rozsa's magnificent overture and film score. I believe it to be the perfect blending of music and story.
Hearing this magnificent score brings back that great image of Heston standing tall with Hawkins on the makeshift raft in the high sea.....WOW. ...Baba Long Beach Ca
I actually did not like that scene. I thought it was a very bad Deus Ex Machina that made no sense logically. It felt like the writer gave Ben-Hur a get out of jail free card, which felt forced. Glad you liked it though.
@@vladimirhorowitz I guess that makes sense. Just wasn’t a very enjoyable ending for me, because if you introduce the fact that people can be cured of their diseases, it makes me wonder why God chose to cure the people with leprosy at the very end of the film, as opposed to when they were first afflicted with it.
@@markparkinson6947 Haha but that's a religious/philosophical question, not a screenplay criticism! I'm not sure if that's what happens in the novel, but I'd like to read it eventually. I think that's kind of like the Problem of Evil, right? If God can cure people of leprosy, why does God let anyone get leprosy? Why did God let Judea throw his wife and sister in prison in the first place, or let Judea go to the galleys? I interpreted the miracle as God's reward to Judea for 1) offering Jesus the water and repaying the favor and 2) rewarding Ben-Hur for opting to be a slave and embarking on this arduous journey when he could have had this nice cushy life in Rome as long as he sold out his own people.
@@vladimirhorowitz I think the question can be both philosophical/religious and a screenplay criticism. The two can sometimes hand in hand, especially with a movie like Ben-Hur, that provides philosophical and religious questions and answersto questions about the abilities and necessities of God. As you suggest, the film leaves God’s motivation and intentions very ambiguously, which means you can pretty much interpret God’s actions however you want, which kind of defeats the purpose of a narrative, but if the point was to question the motivations of God in the story, than it was pretty successful.
Mill's Rozsa also wrote the score for King of Kings and Quo Adis however Spartacus was composed by Alex North while Elmer Bernstein did The Ten Commandments.
Finally, one of the most requested scores is here! Miklós Rózsa’s magnum opus and one of the (literally) greatest film scores of all time, even featuring instruments the composer specially let built for the recording sessions, based on his researches in Rome. Originally it was planned to publish this video earlier this year but I thought that now is the perfect time. Christmas and on the jump to 2019, which will mark the 60th anniversary of the movie. As big and untouchable it is, it had to be put into an exceptional 20 minutes presentation. Many popular cues, such as the Overture and Star Of Bethlehem are featured here, but I focused more on the great but lesser known cues to convey the feeling of the epic journey Ben Hur had to take, such as the fantastic Fertility Dance, Farewell To Rome, The Procession To Calvary and the outstanding Sea Battle sequence, where the orchestra performs Rózsa’s music with such an energy and as striking as the scenery for which it was written for. Also, I have to say that the beloved “Jesus Theme”, could not be featured here more than two small times, during copyright reasons. The famous Parade Of The Charioteers is not featured here, too, because the cue is unfortunately one of the so few(!) that did not survive in good audio quality. So, I included Panem Et Circenses, instead. I hope that you enjoy this shortened, but no less epic journey Miklós Rózsa invites you to!
Oh my Lord (Pun intended) you did it! This is my favorite score of all time and it means the world to give Miklos Rozsa's magnum opus a first-class treatment! It means even more that you released it at the most appropriate time of the year! Thank you so much!
God bless you for this lovely present, Fred. My WWII Army dad just went Home, and my brother gave me dad's original soundtrack. Merry Christmas, brother.
A great score to a great motion picture I was just 2 years old when this masterpiece of cinematic greatness was released on November 17, 1959. This film has become a holiday classic on Turner Classic Movies. Happy 60th Anniversary to this piece of cinematic history and Happy Easter 2019.
I think if you grew up in the 1970s, you would have heard one of Miklós Rózsa’s scores at one time or another, whether it was that of El Cid, King of Kings, or Ben Hur. The magnitude of the score is difficult to put into words even. There is a magic of Miklós Rózsa’s scores; that is they have the effect of exuding the mood of the time(s) they portray. If you could transport back in time and play one of his scores, you would be forgiven to think that they would not be out of place. 🎼❤
Every one is in unity of this one and only timeless piece of film music capturing history and emotion Nothing has ever equally the magnificence soul stirring score Miklos you were and are a wonderful example of humanity and ultimate emotion in film history Listen to the angels in the original version of the score in The finally God bless you M R Your ultimate royalty in film composers
Ben-Hur a great and classic movie epic and christian movie. Soundtrack marked by Rosza. 11 Oscars and saved MGM from broke. Heston became the hero from epic movies.
@@putinscat1208 They mention a chariot scene in the parody of biblical epic movies in HAIL, CAESAR! If you haven't seen it, watch it. Even the music is an overdone, exaggerated parody of biblical movie music. ruclips.net/video/j9rXT8YiZhU/видео.html
For clarity, it's not a Christian movie but a movie about Christianity. The subtitle of Lew Wallace's book is A Tale of the Christ and that certainly seeks to proselytize readers but not the film.

Your editing technique is flawless in creating this grand tribute to the Maestro's timeless score. BEN-HUR definitely ranks among your greatest suite endeavors! Plus 10 on the Bravo Scale, Soundtrack Fred!
Dear Fred, You've done it again I adore Miklos Rozsa's music. I was first introduced to his music by my Dad we had the score to Spellbound on 78. I held on to the album with a photo of Bergman and Peck until I moved recently. Indeed old Hollywood scoring no computer involved here. Amazing a majority of the composers such as Rozsa and Dimitri Tiomkin, Steiner foreign-born brought such joy to our souls with their genesis. Bless you, Fred and Happy Holiday to you and your family.
The greatest film score of all time, I mean too. This film was wreely a whole world. This"Tale of the Christ" was wreely for us, people, education to a christian sightseeing, and a christian live. The Christ is always with us, in the "running speed", in our living difficulty... until the Cross. With His Death, after bearing the Cross, us save, giving the Holy Spirit, and with Them, the Resurrection... for us all. His Strength, Holy Spirit, Eternally Love, makes us loving each others, necessary in the way of the Commandments. The Tale of "Ben Hur", and the sound of Miklos Rozsa helps us so much.
Es muy dificil conseguir lo que alcanzo esta pelicula en su tiempo y el efecto que produjo cuando se estreno en todas aquellas personas que se dijeron : voy a verla. he was always in shape, and had to be for the demand he also had on his body,in films.and stage actor.God Bless you always Chuck.
BEN HUR, LE PLUS GRAND PÉPLUM DE TOUT LES TEMPS !
Gran Dios!!!!
The greatest film score of all time, this is the masterpiece of movie history.
It truly is. Everything about it just says EPIC.
It's hard to argue with that.
An Epic Score by an Epic Composer for an Epic Movie
Miklos Rozsa! The GOAT! Nuff said! ❤
It warms my heart to see so many people who appreciate the fine art of classic cinema and music as I do!

You can feel it when it first starts
The power of older movies
You’re such a fling bore.
And not to speak of the advanced technology available no w. photography is superb - i can still see the chariot race when I shut my eyes
@@yaffayafo82 Hey, credit has to be given to the guys who worked their buns off for the special effects.

Thanks and God bless you!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😉😄
I love you too Nancy
Rosza's score for BEN-HUR is one of the grandest and melodious ever composed for a motion picture.
Yes
@ Brian Sandernbergh I absolutely agree agree. It's majestic stuff.
This movie was MGM's crown jewel. A masterpiece, in EVERY sense of the word.
Ha!
Well dont forget El Cid or Quo Vadis soundtracks!
Since my childhood I see this movie and even today I'm listening to it's music.... There's nothing like Ben Hur music...
Every time when there is the theme plays the presence of our Lord, it put cold shivers in me! I love this soundtrack. Without the soundtrack there is no movie! Ben Hur is one of the best epics of all times!
You speak for me also. Divinely inspired work if ever there was one !

I'm a big fan of soundtracks, en passant a fellow countrymen of Miklós Rózsa (He arrived to the States from Hungary...)
I heard a lot of soundtrack albums - at least from 1000 movies and games - but with good heart and confidence I can tell Ben Hur's ost is one of the most complete, greatest, detailed, emotional, etc soundtrack of history. I cannot count the positive markers...
With all due respect I have to ask a question from those who doesn't like these tunes: "Guys, what's the matter with you?" :)

One could run out of adjectives trying to convey the sweeping grandeur of Rozsa's magnificent overture and film score. I believe it to be the perfect blending of music and story.

the music puts you right there in that period
That final scene, where he's reunited with his healed mother and sister, chokes me every time.
I actually did not like that scene. I thought it was a very bad Deus Ex Machina that made no sense logically. It felt like the writer gave Ben-Hur a get out of jail free card, which felt forced.
Glad you liked it though.
@@markparkinson6947 But....it was literally Deus. God cured their leprosy. The miracle made total sense in the context of the story.

This movie and soundtrack has been inscribed in my soul💖

I sit here listening to this epic score, goose-pimples on my neck, recalling how moving and wonderful this movie truly is.
