      I agree. I remember watching it in the 60's being around 10 years old, and the scene at the end of the movie, where his mother and sister are taking shelter from the storm during the crucifixion of Jesus - the camera shows their faces being healed of the leprosy as the thunder and lightning is all around them. This scene caused a very deep sense of compassion and love for the gift that He gave us. And other deeper feelings I cannot explain. It has been with me my entire life, and now, I am dedicated to it wholeheartedly. Waiting for His soon returning. Oh what a glorious day that will be!

      While Boyd received a Golden Globe award for his portrayal in the film Ben Hur and critical appraise as well, he did not received an Academy Award best supporting actor because his role had what was seen to be at the time, gay overtones, in other words, overtones of homosexuality. Thus in those days the Film academy did not see fit to make the award in Boyd's case because of how his role came across. As I understand it however, he never had a problem with not receiving the award.

    • @trwent
      @trwent Год назад +1

      Agreed. Since Heston was the principal star in both Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments, and since they were both biblical spectacles that came out within a couple years of each other, those two films are often compared to each other. But there is really NO comparison; The Ten Commandments was a very good movie and certainly one of the best pictures of the year it came out, but it really comes off at times almost as a documentary and it is not terribly thought-provoking. But Ben-Hur was quite simply a cinematic masterpiece, one of the greatest motion pictures ever made and certainly the finest biblical epic of all time. It grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish. If you go to the bathroom for 5 minutes during The Ten Commandments it is really no big deal, but for Ben-Hur you do not want to miss a second!! And it is a VERY thought-provoking film, one which you will continue to think about your entire life after seeing it and think about what is truly important in life.

    A great movie I've watched many times and fell in love with the gorgeous and talented Stephen Boyd despite the fact I hated his character Messala. Only recently found out Stephen Boyd was a modest chap fron Northern Ireland who stated that the best thing about his career was it gave him the ability to support his parents in comfort for the rest of their lives. He came from a very poor background and saw his parents struggle to provide for their family. What a star! Taken from us far too soon.

      Indeed...Charlton Heston was not only a finely skilled and trained actor (grad of Northwestern), but his commitment to excellence and his work ethic were exemplary!
      Heston was + will always be one of the GREATS in this art form and industry -- when films of true merit w/biblical, historic and social significance were made, unlike much of today. No surprise he became a long-elected head of the Screen Actors' Guild.
      TY, CH, for sharing your gifts! 💞💞💞

      I too. have seen the film many, many times. First saw it at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood at age of 8. A few years back I began to notice how the writers and probably Wyler as well worked a very nice motif into the film: the use of "hands". The movie begins with the camera moving in to the Creation of Adam fresco ending with closeup of the two hands about to meet at the moment of creation. The image returns in the desert when Christ gives water to Judah. Several shots of Judah's hands as he gazes at Esther's slave ring. Another recurring image of two hands at the crucifixion: Close up of Christ's nailed hand on the cross and quick cut to Esther looking at Miriam's cured hand in the cave. And, as you noted, the movie ends as it began - with, in this case, the word "hand." Would no doubt have won a twelfth Oscar (screenplay) had it not been for the unfortunate bitter fight and controversy over the credit for the screenplay in which Christopher Fry was not given co-writing credit.

    "Ben-Hur" has always been one of my favorite films. As an historian, I appreciate it because it gives me a glimpse of what life MAY hav been like 2,000 years ago. However, these stills show the preparation that went into the making of the film. But finally, it is a total tribute to the professionalism of Hollywood. Producer Sam Zimbalist was Jewish, yet he was responsible for this film as well as "Quo Vadis." Director William Wyler was an Alsatian Jew who left Germany just before the rise of Hitler. Composer Miklos Rosza was a Hungarian Jew. Could any Hollywood "Christian" film music have stirred the hearrts of Christians more? Yet, all three of these men were important parts of creating the greatest Christian epic films of all time.
