- Stephen Boyd (4th July 1931 - 2nd June 1977) was an actor from Glengormley, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He appeared in some 60 films, most notably as Messala in Ben-Hur (1959), a role that earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture. He received his second Golden Globe Award nomination for Billy Rose's Jumbo (1962).
The scene in which Messala died, with that long exhale, had to be one of the most well acted deaths in movie history. That alone should have merited Boyd an Oscar nomination.
Very effective acting.
Amazingly handsome man and a wonderful actor. Much missed.
The Roman Officer's uniform and armour was probably the most striking and best looking in all history.........and Stephen Boyd really carried it off and gave it the 'wow' factor. No else since (not even Russell Crowe in Gladiator) has been able to wear it with such presence!
Ah, an open uniform fetishist. Me too, but I prefer cheerleaders.
ABSOLUTELY true
Vastly underrated and underappreciated actor. Brilliant in the Oscar. Gone way to soon!!!
Yes, I concur.
His portrayal of Messala in Ben Hur was beyond acting genius.
Yes! I hated Messala! 😂
Motorhead ::
His great talent was beyond acting genius.
Many actors, I guess, like to do great death-scenes, but Boyd's death-scene as Messala, was uncannily brilliant ! I've only seen two, maybe three actors who were as convincing as Boyd & none were super-famous ( Clarence Williams III ).
Boyd should have gotten an Oscar ! There couldn't have been anyone better that year.
Maybe he wasn't nominated ? But one thing is for sure :: any lack of recognition of his talent & others, has become some of the main reasons viewership of the Oscars has steadily dropped !
I agree with you
His performance is iconic and intense.
Motorhead "His portrayal of Messala in Ben Hur was beyond acting genius." Hyperbole alert!
There will never be another like Stephen Boyd. What an incredible actor.
He was a wonderful a actor. He was brilliant in “ Ben Hur” his scene after the chariot race when he was dying was absolutely electrifying. No one could have done a better job.
Yes, however he appears in more impressive films than that one
I'll never forget it !
Last words the race is not over
Oscar worthy scene
Completely agree, "electrifying" is the exact word.
So interesting that who he was as a person worked against his career and what would seem to be certain lifelong stardom. His life was cut short.
JUST GORGEOUS!!!!! Why didn't THIS MAN GET NOTICED? HE WAS AN AMAZING HUMAN BEING AND ACTOR❤❤❤
I honestly don't know who else could've acted Messala. Stephen was more than perfect for this role. I'm always in awe at how casting directors always seem to cast the right choice(s). Bravo!
It's 2023 , this past Easter Sunday I rented on you tube ' BEN HUR ' ! Since I was young , along with my family it would be Ben Hur , the Ten Commandments and the Robe ! Steven Boyd was magnetic , he held his own with the great Charlton Heston . Rest in peace . ❤️
What a lovely humble man. I felt a bit emotional when he described how the first thing he did after earning decent money, was buy a house for his parents so they could live in comfort for the first time in their lives.
I love to hear actors looking out for their parents once they make it big. It shows how caring and loving he is towards his parents.
Not only an amazing actor, but a beautiful soul. Too soon gone. RIP Stephen ❤❤❤
He had a great voice!
Some actors are known for their distinctive voices. A few that come to mind are Richard Basehart, Jack Hawkins, Errol Flynn, Robert Morley. . . .
Love him
He was a gorgeous man that is for sure 💕
He was gorgeous
Kind, gentle, loving, good-looking, charismatic actor. I still think Masala is one of the all time great baddies on screen.
I unashamedly say he was a beautiful man with a lovely voice and very good actor. I treasure the body of work he left behind.
I always admired Stephen Boyd, but now, I respect him even more, because he was his own person and nobody could put him in a box to fit in with the rest of Hollywood. Well done, Mr, Boyd!
Did you see him with Dionne Warwicke in 'Slaves'?
He was a dashingly good looking actor with a deep masculine voice. It's a shame that he did not receive an Oscar for his riveting portrayal as the villainous Masala in Ben Hur.
Such a gentleman & marvelous actor. Always one of my absolute favorites. I watch everything he's in, no matter how many times I've seen it. I hope he realized that he had a great number of fans who loved him. R.I.P. Mr. Boyd...
Like all of the above I have enjoyed the great acting of @ stephen Boyd his .performance as @masala in @ ben hur was just macknificent if he had played @ mark Anthony in @ cleopatra he was first choice for the part I have always that @ richard Burton portral of @ marc Anthony was boring
I was an avid filmgoer back in the day and I had a MASSIVE crush on Stephen Boyd! I painted his portrait when I was 13 yrs old and sent it to him and he wrote back to me. I was over the moon! I was quite good at painting and he liked the portrait and encouraged me to keep painting.which I did and, in my later years, achieved some success. Of course, when he died so young, I had outgrown the crush but was nevertheless devastated. I still feel sad, he had so much left to offer. A great actor.
How did he die
@@dianespanpinato8890 Massive heart attack at age 45.
Beautiful voice, beautiful man. RIP
I liked Stephen Boyd in every movie I saw with him. It was a shame that he died so young...
He was sooo..handsome and smooth.
Stephen Boyd's Messala was so unforgettable! Boyd was such a tour of force in that role. What a great, mesmerizing actor he was. It is unfortunate that he could not get more good roles along with his career. However, he deserved all the admiration for having kept his authenticity as a person. What a good-natured man, what a nice guy, and how humble he was. He was so handsome inside and out. The way he valued the relationships with his parents and his wife, was so commendable. Let's keep his memory forever alive. He surely deserves all the compliments! Thank you for this documentary about him. Bravo, Mr. Boyd!
He was the first choice for the lead in "Cleopatra". From what I've heard and read a pleasant person compared to Richard Burton.
Loved him in, Ben Hur, The Best of Everthing and Fantastic Voyage. So handsome.
I always had a crush on him and after seeing this, I love him even more. His lifestyle should have been admired instead of criticized by the Hollywood 'elite'. He should have been given a TV show to showcase his talent and extraordinary good looks.
Linda my sentiments are exactly as yours…I had a “ crush” ( at 10 years old) on Stephen and enjoyed this documentary of his life - he was a man of integrity, strong character which is much needed today in Hollywood.
@@rosebud6250 Yes, indeed. Hollywood could use more actors like him instead of some of the self-indulgent we are witnessed to. I can truly understand why his wife was so devoted to him. He was worth it.
Still my fav actor..incredible talent.
God bless this Irishman.
My fav, too. He has fascinated me for close to 65 years.
Excellent documentary--very touching, revealing the man as he truly was. His performance as Messala is etched in my mind as one of the best acting efforts ever--so eminently cruel and charming at the same time.
Underated actor, excellent and talented guy.👍💯💪
I am so happy for Stephen Boyd -- yes his fame disappeared quickly but he was never looking for fame in the first place. He was looking to live a comfortable but quiet life and that is exactly what he got to do.
He should have won an Oscar ,for his role in ,"The Oscar".
Ĺĺll
Absolutely
So handsome and unforgettable in Ben Hur.
You see Boyd in a Classic Hollywood Movie, it's usually gonna be a banger.
what a beautiful man. RIP . Too soon gone
He was so handsome......
I always remember him for his role as the friend turned enemy Character in Ben Hur.
When I was a really little kid my folks took us all out to see Ben Hur at the drive in. I was horrified by the scene after the chariot race, in which Charlton Heston goes to see Stephen Boyds"s character, who had been trampled and dragged behind his chariot and was dying. I think it actually traumatized me a little because my memory of it was that he was completely covered with blood and torn up. I saw it again years later as an adult and was impressed that there was really very little blood and the scene was dark; you can't see much at all. The horror of it was mostly Boyd's ragged breathing and the way he used his voice delivering the lines. Darned good acting.
Dopey
Yes! I remember that breathing.
FLAWLESS!!
That death scene is an excellent piece of acting👍
Steven Boyd was outstanding in the " Oscar" movie.
Mr . Boyd will always be one of the GREAT ACTORS of the SILVER SCREEN ❤
This level of quality in Hollywood is gone. He was such an amazing actor, so gentlemanly.
Very different actor and personality than I thought he was and was pleasantly surprised. An actor equal to Richard Burton and other British Isles greats. A good humble man.
Yes and as a man, a far better character than Burton
Better than Richard Burton. He actual acted the person he portrayed. Unbelievable. Richard was a actor who portrayed and actor.
We never forget Stephen Boyed
Such a riveting and likable actor. His performance in Ben Hur was incredible, and he played a completely different character in The Fall of the Roman Empire with Sophia Loren.
The man who cast him in Ben Her should have got am Oscar, never mind Stephen. Ben Hur is quite possibly the greatest film of all time and Boyd and Heston were a dream team. I never fail to admire their performances every time I watch it. It's only when you see the totally antiseptic remake of Ben Her you truly realise what a masterpiece the original film and acting were.
19:00, Steven Boyd was a person who never forgot where he came from; unusual for Hollywood actors. A noble characteristic!
OLAV WILHELM He did it for a while to boost his career as an actor; that doesn’t mean he lost sight of where he came from. Smart aleck, wise crack remarks like yours have no place for things like this. I bet you never took care of your aging parents like he did!
Even more unusual in today’s 2022 Hollywood given the violence on display at the Oscars.
@@jackkarns2484 that’s right! the Oscars used to be an enjoyable experience; now it’s nothing more than taking up valuable time!
Well done doc.,....sad he died at only 45.,....R.I.P....Stephen.
If you have not seen The Man Who Never Was, find and watch it. His performance alone is well worth the watch, plus the whole movie is superb.
Although I've only ever known him from his role as Messala in Ben Hur, and although he only played a supporting role being on screen for less than a sixth of the movie, I've always had a strong memory of his part, because it was so raw, real, tragic and impressive, and the perfect counterpart to Ben Hur - Charlton Heston, who has also in my opinion played the best part of his life in Ben Hur.
My favorite biblical movie (and Heston movie.). It is moving, heartbreaking, uplifting, and redemption.
He had a 'manic' edge when he played Messala which was just right for the part but try to see him in "The Man Who Never Was"; he's charming & villainous!
I agree that Charlton Heston did an outstanding part in Ben Hur. It is one of my favorite movies.
The Chariot race was the best action event in all of movies !!! The horses trying to be first ! WOW !
I play the video often.
If you don't play the Hollywood game, doesn't matter how talented you are, you lose. This man blew everyone else off the screen.
Talented, versatile, charismatic actor.
He bought such intensity to his roles; even in lightweight films like Jumbo, he drew the audience's eye.
Loved his rendition of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World".
Had no idea he was Irish and a busker...
Remember the excellent movie "Abandon ship!" (1957) with the great Tyrone Power and a very young Stephen Boyd!!! Both were Irish, handsome, talented, had a marvelous voice and died too soon, too!! Rest in peace! Thanks!!
o captain brave captain, excellent ......who can make the long pull to Africa....
Boyds not Irish.....he's an Ulsterman!
@@zabaleta66 boyds irish your not.
I saw that movie on television, pre-classic movie channels and RUclips, and it has stuck with me since.
He was rare. A Hollywood actor who humble and didn't seek the fame and attention. The love of his family was first in his life .
It is hard to believe he passed away so young.
Our boy what a man
loved him in the movie The Oscar as well as Ben Hur He is missed.
Gorgeous guy!
I've had all his ben hur memorabilia and his golden globe in my house for years, and yet I've only just discovered this documentary and that he's still got some awed fans!
The Robe, Ben Hur, and other films. Such a wonderful actor.
Stephen Boyd wasn't in The Robe.
A talented but very underated actor
What a powerful actor.
The impact he made in Ben hur was simply un believable..
I can’t stop being mesmerized by his cleft.
A very handsome man, great in Ben Hur and the fall of the a Roman empire, some people thought he was in Spartacus,he wasn't!!!!🤗🇬🇧
My favorite Stephen Boyd role was as Livius in the Fall of the Roman Empire, which is also one of my favorite movies.
A real shame Stephen died so young. He did extraordinarily well in those 60 films, and a nice guy to boot it seems.
He was gorgeous and a great actor!
It's a great pity that Stephen didn't play James Bond. He would have been perfect, blowing all the opposition away.
Yes, he had that very masculine appearance and very smooth quality that Sean Connery possessed, and which I feel Roger Moore and all the subsequent Bonds lacked
Le faltaba dureza y chulería., quizá su "caché" era más alto que el de Sean Connery...
Totally in love with Stephen Boyd. Loved him.
Sean Connery was the best. I'm still in love with that man. Daniel Craig was a close second in my opinion.
U know, I never thought
of that, but you're corret!
How weird that the remake of "The man who never was" is being released! When i first saw it I thought his betrayal of the IRA spy was phenomenal and his role in Ben Hur was even better! Obviously his working class background kept him modest and humble! He is and was a credit to his country and his profession. He should be highlighted to young actors on how to behave and how to live! Taken to young RIP Sir, your work will never be forgotten.
Look him up for the movie "The Oscar". Bloody genius performance. RIP
And he sang with Doris Day in Jumbo
Co starring Tony Bennet
That was eerily similar to the turning of his career, as well for poor Peter Lawford. Surprised not mentioned in the Bio.
His performance in the Oscar has been heavily panned by the critics. That makes me feel sad. However, the film is a cult classic in that it is considered so bad that it is good. The last moments when Boyd's character Frankie Fane realizes that he did not win is remarkable because of his expression.
Boyd and Heston in Ben Hur....brilliant.
Stephen had a velvet voice, so smooth and rich.
What a fine humble man and a great actor
It sounds to me he had more "star quality" than "big Hollywood stars" did at that time or even now. Great documentary, thank you for sharing this. We need more people like him now.
Thank you for making this. He was an actor that left an indelible mark on my memory as a young girl. A man worthy of every respect.
What a great actor & very interesting character, thanks for this great video
Loved him in "Billy Roses Jumbo", with Doris Day and Jimmy Durante
So did I. It was with that film that I became familiar with the songs, influence, and legacy of Rodgers and Hart--you know--before Rodgers and Hammerstein.
I always loved Stephen Boyd. He was a good Actor and very handsome.
One of the most handsome actors ever!God rest him.❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
He had a far better life than many Hollywood so called “stars”! He lived for his wife and himself. Not feeling the need to suck up to the rest of the vampires. He took care of his parents, his wife and didn’t care about all the phony glitz of Hollywood! Seems like an amazing man, too bad he died so young, but he also died doing what he loved 🌹
I liked his work very much and he could sing!
What a wonderful James Bond he would have been.
EXACTLY!!
I heard he was offered Bond but turned it down. In the end Sean Connery came to hate the character and had to work very hard to transition to other roles. Connery was very blah in the European made Western, Shalako, in which Stephen Boyd was one of his costars. Boyd was the best actor in the film, playing the heavy Bosky Fulton.
We went on a school trip in the 1970s to see the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, at a special screening for school kids. Shortly after, Ben-Hur was re-released so you could see it on the big screen and I went with my Dad to see it. Those two epic films introduced me to Stephen Boyd. The Man Who Never Was, Island in the Sun and Fantastic Voyage are also all terrific films in which he excels. He had movie star looks combined with a totally genuine, sincere, usually calm, serious presence on screen. I found the description of his wife’s lifelong devotion to him after she was widowed deeply touching, my heart broke for her.
So many wonderful warm and affectionate comments on this page. Sadly, he was gone far too soon. Had he had more time, I believe he would have been "rediscovered". He was simply wonderful in The Squeeze! And I do wonder how a man who was described as being very shy was able to be in the public eye and on the big screen....from Glengormley to his name in lights on a theater marquee on Broadway for BenHur. How did he do it? And why? What exactly made him so passionate about being an actor. Sadly, we will never know. I am still infatuated by him after more than 60 years; a wonderful affliction it is, though tinged with sorrow over his early death.
*loved him in The Oscar❤*
He was great in Ben Hur, but I first became aware of Stephen Boyd when I saw The Caper of the Golden Bulls on the late show one night while in high school. I was studying Spanish and I hoped to be able to go to Spain so when this movie came on I watched it because of the setting, but after watching it the best part of the movie was Stephen Boyd! I wish Dick Cavett had done an interview with Stephen Boyd. I think it would have been great because Cavett let his guests speak.
Stephen Boyd was a great actor and gentleman! One of my favorites! I cried when he passed. Rip❤❤
HE WAS GREAT IN FANTASTIC VOYAGE ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE. HE WAS A GREAT ACTOR. GONE TOO SOON SO SAD HOW WE LOST HIM R.I.P.
Amazing that the first film I saw him in was "The best of everything"
Great Actor I Loved The Oscar seen it About 8 Times RIP Stephen Boyd😉
Loved him in. The best of everything
My mum grew up in the same town and knew the Millers a little. Stephen's (Billy's) brother used to buy her and her mates chips. And everybody in the town knew how well Stephen Boyd looked after his parents as he got more well known and richer.
What a terrific documentary. Boyd always underestimated... and by me for too many years. Whole new appreciation for his work. What he might've accomplished had he lived thirty more years.
The clip at 6.59 looks like Anthony Steele note Stephen Boyd. I loved Stephens acting, he was a true actor, so dedicated. R.I.P. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Gran actor y muy guapo .Descanse en Paz
3 men from the film I would’ve love to have met in person are: Laurence Olivier, Robert Mitchum, and Stephen Boyd.
Fantastic Voyage was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. That is ultimately why I knew him. I recognized his face in the gladiator movies but did not know his name.
His career and life should have been much longer. I loved him. RIP wonderful talented handsome Stephen B.😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
thank you for telling us the story of this wonderful Gentleman, such à great talent, beautiful voice and a gentle man, unfortunately dying young! Hé was à wonderful accord with à great présence! thank you again!
