“Silver Streak” (1976), starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor in their first of four collaborations, along with Jill Clayburgh, Patrick McGoohan and Ned Beatty. Wilder portrays a book editor, who upon boarding the Los Angeles to Chicago train finds himself mixed up with art forgers who have no problems to commit murder to keep their dealings quiet. Fun and high-speed danger will follow. Even though Pryor doesn't feature until the halfway point in the piece, this is very much a film that succeeds due to the chemistry between himself and Wilder.
The music by Henry Mancini gives another seal of quality with a lot of thematic material and his -as usual- lovely arrangements. Enjoy!

They would have co-🌟 ed in Blazing Saddles were it not for studio executives' short-sighted objections.

I have the rare CD of this soundtrack. The liner notes tell the story of how this lost music score was finally made available to the public. Basically, the master tapes from the recording sessions were stored away and forgotten for many years after Mancini's death. When the stereo and mono tapes were rediscovered, some had degraded to the point where they were unusable to copy. Therefore, most of the tracks on the CD were recorded in stereo while others could only be recorded in mono. Sadly, a few of the music cues were lost forever. However, you may still hear all of the music if you watch the movie. This CD is one of my favorites in my collection. The score reminds me of cross-country trips taken on Amtrak with my late wife. (Fortunately, those trips were not nearly as exciting as the movie!)

      Hello Thomas,
as far as I recalled the score was (of course) recorded entirely in stereo but the elements had seen major damage over the years in the vaults, so to release the score in its entirety Intrada Records made use of Mancini's working copies (which were in mono only), the surviving stereo elements were featured as a bonus. However, in 2016 they re-released the score in complete stereo (as presented in this video), although no new elements were found. It was possible to remix the mono elements into stereo with help of current technology and skills of Chris Malone.
The different between stereo and mono jumps not really into your face, so I believe you didn't even notice it! :-)
      Best!
      Fred

@@SoundtrackFred Trivia: I read in a railroad publication years ago that the producers of Silver Streak originally contacted Amtrak to lease a train from them for filming. However, Amtrak officials rejected the idea. They were afraid of negative publicity in having one of their trains involved in a wreck even if it were given a fictional railroad name. So the producers went to Canada and leased a complete train from the Canadian Pacific railroad. With a little repainting of the classic F unit engines and 1950's era streamline consist, it became a train for the "AMroad" railroad. And the rest is history.

This music brings back memories of seeing this movie on a snowy Saturday in January 77 with my date. The movie was and still is hilarious. RIP Henry Mancini.

Mancini’s sound = well-prepared comfort food, or a favorite blanket. Little bits of jazz, great melodies, and those runs that lead you through the story.

He actually had a much greater range than that, tv detective, classic Touch of Evil for Welles, Audrey Hepburn's fave composer, 2X for Loren, suspense, romance, Sellers comedies, traveled with symphony, got to see him @ Ontario Place amphitheater a century ago.

Hitchcock sacked him from Frenzy, as he had Herrmann on Torn Curtain, did hire Williams for Family Plot, though.

Really a lot of railroading was happening those days, gosh. Orient Express, Breakheart Pass, Cassandra Crossing, Avalanche Express ... I've lost track a little I'm afraid. ;-) Some of the Stunts on the Streak appeared later in the Fall Guy intro ...

When I first heard the opening eight-note ostinato, I wondered at how familiar it felt. Now I know why - it's a distant relative of the opening eight-note ostinato from Mancini's "Peter Gunn" theme. 😺

    Bello e divertente Fred.👍🏻
