Me too. Bought it when I was 14 (1980) for $150 and went through it completely. Had a Shelby 'glass front end, fender flares and a 302 (replaced the stock 6).
I know it's tough to do but I'd love to see more stuff like this. More pro-touring and lightly modded muscle cars would be awesome to see in the canyons.
TheSmokingTire Awesome! I can't wait to see the rest. I have a '79 El Camino that was a father/son project 10-13 years ago and it's evolved a bit so seeing the Monte Carlo from DSE was great since I'd been looking at their stuff anyways.
Brennan McKissick I'm not being funny, but what makes this a muscle car? It had a v6 with like 200hp. Can you just increase hp in a car and make it a muscle car?
focused313 focused313 you must not be able to hear, count or look up history because he said the car has a Roush 302, it clearly looks like a V8 and if you're talking about factory trim then this car never had a V6 option. They were only inline 6s and this car doesn't have that motor in it anyways so what's the issue? If anything you could argue this is a pony car and not a muscle car but your comment/question is still laughable.
I really love what this Detroit speeds shop does from what I've seen lately . They take sporty classics and just give them just enough modifications that maintains the classic look and feel but just gives you a small nudge of better performance everywhere.Basically just fixing the flaws the car had and that it.. Simple yet effective. Would love to see a 55 Chevy from these guys
What an awesome build. The right mods while leaving the car still looking clean and classy. No custom interior, no obnoxious big fender flares that ruin the clean body lines. Just a clean, clean car with a nice stance and tasteful mods. Love it!
i love what ur have been making with these one takes engine bay shot to see mods walkaround too see stance and drive by shot for external audio.. then the drive.. love it
Pull into a gas station and you're sure to find someone telling you they had one back in the day. That happened to me with my first '68 back in the 80s. You better believe it, I still own and drive a '68 Mustang, just a nicer one.
Penske race shop was across the rail road tracks on the left from the wind tunnel/Carolina blonde brewery. It houses 3 different types of race teams under one roof and is worth a look.
TheSmokingTire Great video!! It's nice to see a relatively affordable and realistic power output type car, especially a mustang=) Love your video's so please keep them coming!!
wow, you're a bit of an angry little man aren't you?? :) i'm a big fan of TST and matt in general but one thing he does tend to do in his videos is cut people off. you're spot on champ, he is the presenter and he can do what he wants. but one of the good things about YT is the ability for presenters to check feedback from their fans. do you actually respond to people like this in your life off the internet when somebody makes such an innocuous observation? there are two scenarios here... if yes, then you have anger issues. you need to work on that. if not, then clearly you revel in the anonymity of the internet... maybe you're the real skankhunt42? either way, get some balance in your life :) you're not healthy.
haha 325bhp "mild power". This thing weighs what, under 3000lbs,possibly well under. Thats a very nice p/w ratio. Either that engine is sluggish as hell for some reason with overstated power and huge losses from crank to wheels or youre extremely spoiled Matt ;) . Cause 325bhp simply cannot be mild power that will not get you in trouble , especially with that weight.
ChopStickZero I have a 65 with some mild upgrades. Very similar to this car. Weighed in at 2900 with out me in it. Decently quick, and definitely enough to get you in trouble. But not enough power to scare you.
The old classic Mustangs just kill me. I don't know why, but to my eyes, there are very few better looking cars from that era. I would add an exhaust dumper, but otherwise, it looks great!
My first car with as '65 notch back. Looks like a pretty clean and original, but with some goodies. And yes, they over steer like crazy in stock form. Thats why I no longer have mine :(
"...302 is not the greatest engine ever made..." Yeah, this comment pretty much qualifies you as another know-nothing, Matt. You're sorely mistaken, as the SBF is indeed one of the best, and most versatile, engines ever made. A long-lived and proven design, with stellar reliability, good oiling (unlike the Cleveland engines) in a compact package package that is easy and inexpensive to modify. Its only shortcoming is the stock oil pump drive shaft at the base of the distributor had a tendency to twist up like a pretzel in the early years of production.
Yes it would be Justin! Mark just so happens to have a '68 Cougar that he has equipped with everything that we offer in our catalog (Aluma-Frame, subframe connectors, QUADRA-Link). Give us a call at 704.662.3272 to discuss your options with our sales and technical associates!
With horse power at the crank corrected for drivetrain losses he is probably getting 260-270 at the tires. I bet the car weighs 2850 lbs. This is enough to run low 13s in the quarter....maybe a 12.9? There are a TON of street cars that this car would out run. Still.....more power is more power. Check out the maier racing mustang. Its the owners personal car which he also races. I think its a 65', ford racing blue coupe. Looks PERFECT.
@thesmokingtire Hey Matt, love the one takes! Could you keep an eye out for an LSx swapped E39 5 series? I would be really interested in seeing how those things drive. Obviously it would have to be manual. Maybe even contact that guy with that brown E39 touring with the LS7 swap on /Tuned. Looks like a nasty machine.
d1pz9 I'm sure there will be more, people have complained when he puts things like that out every day for a week or two, like with the guy that had all the ls swapped cars and the one takes were only ls swapped cars for 2 weeks, people were no bueno
302 is hard to kill as long as you don't go above 500hp. Go above 500hp and you're on borrowed time before that weak block decides to come apart. Hell, if you're over 400hp and beating on it regularly at the track it's going to split sooner rather than later. However, a normally aspirated 302 will make a healthy 350'ish hp all day long with some decent heads and cam, have good driving characteristics, and last a long long time.
I like that it's kept simple with the engine being carbureted because it's an older car but I bet if it ever went fuel injected it could pick up some power with a good tuner. Unless they had a really good carburetor tuner which I'm sure they do because it sounds healthy. What's everyone else's thoughts on this? My dad is doing a carbureted 489 BBC in a 67' Camaro. I think I might be able to take him in my 1.8 liter Corolla even when he's on the spray. >:-D
@thesmokingtire i tend to Block shift from 4th to 2nd sometimes is that okay for the engine if rev matched? or is it better to get out that habit and sequential down shift 4 3 2
This test driver does not seem to like Fords ?, that is what I get out of it. 325 H.P is good for a Mustang this light weight and more than enough for fun driving and power. You can get a 306 crate motor with 390 H.P . which would be perfect with 3:55 posi traction gears for a Coupe like this.
Wow, they looked like twins. Shave the other guys mustache off and the put on the same clothes and sunnies on his head and you they would be almost identical! 😁
I used to own a white '65 Mustang notchback in high school and seeing that view down the hood brought back some great memories.
Me too. Bought it when I was 14 (1980) for $150 and went through it completely. Had a Shelby 'glass front end, fender flares and a 302 (replaced the stock 6).
WTF???🤟🏻🤟🏻👎🏻🖕🏻
I know it's tough to do but I'd love to see more stuff like this. More pro-touring and lightly modded muscle cars would be awesome to see in the canyons.
Brennan McKissick well I did six of them on this trip so a bunch more to come!
TheSmokingTire Awesome! I can't wait to see the rest. I have a '79 El Camino that was a father/son project 10-13 years ago and it's evolved a bit so seeing the Monte Carlo from DSE was great since I'd been looking at their stuff anyways.
Genuinely excited to see the next episode.
Love seeing these older cars set up to go, handle, and stop well! More, please.
I really love what this Detroit speeds shop does from what I've seen lately . They take sporty classics and just give them just enough modifications that maintains the classic look and feel but just gives you a small nudge of better performance everywhere.Basically just fixing the flaws the car had and that it.. Wow, I really love this car. Just a beautiful masterpiece of history.
i love what ur have been making with these one takes engine bay shot to see mods walkaround too see stance and drive by shot for external audio.. then the drive.. love it
and gives u pretty simple editing for ease of making good content
that thing sounds fantastic
Nothing like a classic American muscle car THAT handles...Great review Matt
That's a beautiful car, inside and out! Sounds nice too.
Hey Matt, this might be one of your highest like to dislike ratios I've seen on one of your videos! Great work!
Man it sounds so good
Amazing car with a timeless design.
Adam Cooper Oh dentfully man those 60's Mustangs are extremely beautiful.
I'm drooling over this car the paint job the interior all beautiful my favorite year of the first gen mustangs
I gotta agree with the builder about the 302. The 1969/70 Boss 302 engine is one of the best engines ever made. It's a lotto engine for me. :)
imho this model and the convertible version of it are still the most beautifull once so far.. imho ofcourse
Fabian van den Bussche followed by the 87-93 Notchback!
David Edwards no followed by the 69 convertable xD
'69 and '70 fastbacks look much better. ;)
Drove one of those to work today. :D ('93 Notchback 5.0)
Agreed. I have an '89 Notch
I love the idea of taking these old chassis and making them handle
That engine sounds amazing.
Pull into a gas station and you're sure to find someone telling you they had one back in the day. That happened to me with my first '68 back in the 80s. You better believe it, I still own and drive a '68 Mustang, just a nicer one.
This a damn nice car - just puts a smile on your face
nice video matt. used to live in north carolina so it's nice to see it again.
Tough to beat an old Mustang. !
Matt, this guy looks like your southern cousin. Maybe it's the facial hair, but you guys really look like you could be related
Finally!!! Thank you thank you thank you for doing a classic mustang!!!
Ugh, it's so beautifulllll. Need one next to my S550.
grandpa car
David G A muscle car of all ages.
Jay Milligan the s550
David G What! How so.
bet he owns a civic/sti/Miata/other piece of crap.
That Halibrand style wheel is in my top 5 off all time, especially in the larger, modern size!
Klasse Act They are pretty nice, I think the 1st gen mustangs scream for Torque Thrust "D".
I'd like just some steelies on it with dog dishes myself, but I can see where you guys are comin' from.
Gives me hope for my 1966 i6 mustang
Swap a V8
Mine 347 shelby cobra 450 -500hp
Those old Mustangs are so pretty
Seeing Matt sitting next to that guy (Mark) reminds me of one of those "spot the differences" games from when I was a kid.
Sweet ride! Love the old Mustangs!!
the little 302 sounds good...
Welcome to NASCAR country home of the best engine builders anywhere.
Absolutely love that accent. I am going to Cabela's.
That's a great build. Love the new tech in old cars. Especially when they can put a new twist on the overdone Mustang.
Did you shoot anything else while you were in the midwest? Nice to see some stuff that's not Cali based.
midwest? NC is east coast...
I assumed, based on the name of the company, that this was in Michigan, my bad.
27dcx fair enough, it's kinda a weird name for the location.
That V8 MX-5 was shot in Colorado
DSE was originally based in MI.
I'm an LS guy....but this car sounds amazing!
Awsome car; sounds incredible!
geeze matt let the guy talk
wow, you're a bit of an angry little man aren't you?? :) i'm a big fan of TST and matt in general but one thing he does tend to do in his videos is cut people off. you're spot on champ, he is the presenter and he can do what he wants. but one of the good things about YT is the ability for presenters to check feedback from their fans.

Lol... If that's how you engage with people when you aren't angry, then you've really just validated what I said :) thanks and good luck with that :^)
That's a gorgeous car.
That's just lovely
Oh dang, didn't know you were going to be in NC.
That handshake scarred the pics outa him
ughhHHh!! those wheels are sick!!!
Super nice guy, cool car
the passenger is a ghost during the drive-by's lol
Twins! haha
haha 325bhp "mild power". This thing weighs what, under 3000lbs,possibly well under. Thats a very nice p/w ratio. Cause 325bhp simply cannot be mild power that will not get you in trouble , especially with that weight.
ChopStickZero I'm spoiled. 325 HP isn't much to me
The wheels are awful wide. I think that has something to do with "huge losses from crank to wheels".
i drive a 400hp notch and i dont think its that fast lol
ChopStickZero I have a 65 with some mild upgrades. Very similar to this car. Weighed in at 2900 with out me in it. Decently quick, and definitely enough to get you in trouble. But not enough power to scare you.
The old classic Mustangs just kill me. I don't know why, but to my eyes, there are very few better looking cars from that era. I would add an exhaust dumper, but otherwise, it looks great!
hey Matt that ford guy looks like your long-lost brother ! sweet whip tho !
I wonder if the color of that car looks better when it's not overcast.
Loebane ... Wimbledon White is more of an off white but surely looks even better in better lighting.
Yeah, Wimbledon White is stunning in person. It's a great color.
Yeah... looks better on a fastback though. :)
Shodan Cat, everything does.
Wimbledon White looks great on coupes, fastbacks, and convertibles, period.
My first car with as '65 notch back. Looks like a pretty clean and original, but with some goodies. And yes, they over steer like crazy in stock form. Thats why I no longer have mine :(
Maybe I need to go drive some newer cars, but I loved the heavy clutch on my Fox body mustangs
@TheSmokingTire Is there any C3 corvette video on the horizon? Or any 90s-2000s AMGs?
Matt takes alternate universe Matt for a ride
Cool cars lately
"...302 is not the greatest engine ever made..."

Only thing this mustang I see is missing is some bolstering in the seats
I have a 68 cougar that I haven't had the opportunity to begin restoring. Would it be safe to look to mustang builds of the same year range for ideas?
Yes it would be Justin! Mark just so happens to have a '68 Cougar that he has equipped with everything that we offer in our catalog (Aluma-Frame, subframe connectors, QUADRA-Link). Give us a call at 704.662.3272 to discuss your options with our sales and technical associates!
Detroit Speed, Inc. thank you so much for the answer.
No problem Justin!
If ever there was a One Take that needed a soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin in the backround..
A great daily driver
wowow so nutty the old clutch pedals they're brakes LOL
With horse power at the crank corrected for drivetrain losses he is probably getting 260-270 at the tires. I bet the car weighs 2850 lbs. This is enough to run low 13s in the quarter....maybe a 12.9? Nice one
Really like this. .. love that clean look. And whites. Great. And those. Wheels. ..yea. Love all of it. ..
I REALLY want to see you drive the DSE 2nd-gen Camaro. That thing is NASTY.
they should hook up the vacuum advance on that thing, no reason not to if you set it to come in correctly
Dave Lafferty someone would have to submit one. I don't proactively solicit cars; it upsets the balance of power in the situation.
I'm in love with that car.... just needs to be painted black ;)
I mean, the steering wheel is going through your ribcage, whether you have a shoulder belt, or not.
Hey Matt, are the one takes with the Fusion Luxury line up over? Was that all they gave you?
I too would like to know this.
d1pz9 I'm sure there will be more, people have complained when he puts things like that out every day for a week or two, like with the guy that had all the ls swapped cars and the one takes were only ls swapped cars for 2 weeks, people were no bueno
Christian Robar I mean, theres always gonna be those who complain, i think sticking to a chronological order of uploading is definitely the way to go
d1pz9 I'm gonna shoot some more with those guys in January. The three I aired was all I have for now.
So sweet!
302 is hard to kill as long as you don't go above 500hp. Go above 500hp and you're on borrowed time before that weak block decides to come apart. However, a normally aspirated 302 will make a healthy 350'ish hp all day long with some decent heads and cam, have good driving characteristics, and last a long long time.
So you had one split on you or are you just talking out of your a hole
"the 302's were some of the toughest engines there ever was"
*insert pic of a tunnel port race motor*
cars and sneakers I know because I have a 96 Ford F150 with 5.0L Windsor V8 with 203,387 miles on it and it's still going strong.
What happened to their 65 fastback that was heavily modified? Do they still have that car? Thanks
Nice car...
Today, on, The Smoking Tire: Matt Farah meets his doppelgänger.
Even if you weren't trying to make more power by going fuel injected do you think the miles per gallon would go up?
My god. I want to drive my Mustang here just for the roads. Wow! Up here in Ontario I'm glad I bought a 2017. the IRS really shines on shitty pavement
Goldys Garage been many times. Several times a year actually. Roads aren't nearly in the same shape as this place.
Maybe I missed it but what is the final drive on that thing? Seems like very long gearing.
Holy shit, it's Matt's clone!
love mustangs
I wonder what Gears were in this? maybe 3.55s?
@thesmokingtire
i tend to Block shift from 4th to 2nd sometimes is that okay for the engine if rev matched? or is it better to get out that habit and sequential down shift 4 3 2
2:15 "Uhhhh yeah"
You've been having some weird audio glitches!
Are you going to drop by SC while you're over here? I have an IS300 you can one take.
hyzaar99 He's not even there anymore. He's somewhere in Africa I believe now. These are filmed weeks before they're uploaded.
Damn I feel stupid now, didn't think about editing etc... well the offer stands lol
hyzaar99 rule of thumb: if you see a post on Instagram from a place, I'm there. If you see a video from a place, 100 percent guarantee I'm not there.
Is this car tubbed or can those wheels and tires fit normally? I would assume at least a mini-tub.
Jacob Siekmann this has the DSE mini tub kit
He said its mini-tubbed right in the beginning.
why do you have a eye in the middle of the steering wheel on your intro
This test driver does not seem to like Fords ?, that is what I get out of it. 325 H.P is good for a Mustang this light weight and more than enough for fun driving and power. You can get a 306 crate motor with 390 H.P . which would be perfect with 3:55 posi traction gears for a Coupe like this.
They should do suv's next episode!
Nice!
I love seeing these resto-mod Mustangs, check out our build! Would love to make some of these handling upgrades.
The guy from DS didn't seem too enthused about his own car.
He didn't seem too enthused being the "passenger".
Camphlobactor it wasn't his car. It's a shop car. And he's just a mellow dude.
Wow, they looked like twins. Shave the other guys mustache off and the put on the same clothes and sunnies on his head and you they would be almost identical! 😁
4:42 "It has air-conditioning ... oh, cool!"
twinning!
Sure hope fella there had a spit bottle. I can feel the my stomach acid turn over just watching.
how much does a car like this cost?
Wasn't this guy on West Coast Custom?
Klasse Act I think he did used to work there. He mentioned working on some POS's from pimp my ride back in the day IIRC
357 Mag WE GOT SPEAKERS IN THE SEATS AND NINE TVS UP IN HERE, G!
