    The book this is based on explains the whole VHS thing and how the tape was made. Long story short, Samara as a grudge spirit was sending her psychic energy straight up out of the well, which just so happened to be directly under the tv in the cabin. When someone tried to record something on an old VHS, her memories and rage were burned into the film by accident. They briefly explained in the hospital session that she could create images on film reels (the large negatives the doctor was holding) just by thinking. In the opening of the movie, the first victim said they were trying to record a football game and ....

    To answer the question of why a tape, it's a bit complicated.
    The Ring is a remake of the Japanese horror film Ring, and while Samara and Sadako do have similarities they are noticeably different. In Ring when Sadako is thrown down the well, she survives for thirty years off of her own hatred. It's also heavily implied that she isn't human. By that time, a cabin was built on top of the well, and a tape was left in the cabin by someone staying in it at the resort. Sadako then used her nensha powers to burn images onto the tape and psychically imprint her hatred onto it, aka, the curse. She died about a year before the events of the movie take place, but her curse allowed her to manifest to kill anyone who watched it and failed to pass the curse on.
    It's harder to understand how Samara did this considering Samara was put down the well, and then died 7 days after. It doesn't really track, but The Ring never really explains how Samara created the tape. You could assume that the cabin and resort were built over the span of 7 days before she died but it's always confused me, and I've watched both of these movies a lot.

      I guess Samara can still use her powers as a ghost

    • @danielpeckham5520
      @danielpeckham5520 Месяц назад

      Samara has the power to imprint images on things, like she projects images into people's minds and onto the X rays, she has the same power when a ghost, she just projected the images of her suffering up from the well onto a blank tape located in the building built on top of the well.

    • @SadakoApologist
      @SadakoApologist Месяц назад

      @@danielpeckham5520 I figured as much, it's just a lot harder to timeline everything because of how quickly she died compared to Sadako in the Japanese film. Sadako died just a year before the events of the film take place, and that's why she was able to use her powers to create the tape. It's implied that Sadako's evil and power as an onryo was limited due to her spirit being trapped in the well. Does the same apply to Samara? If not, what was the purpose of freeing her spirit? It's just a small inconsistency between the adaptations that bothers me occasionally when I think too much about it.

    • @danielpeckham5520
      @danielpeckham5520 Месяц назад

      @@SadakoApologist yeah there are many subtle differences between the versions, even between the various Japanese versions too I think. I still gotta watch the original 1995 tv version properly, that portrays Sadako a bit different than how she is portrayed in other films like Ringu Zero

      @@popcastbutscary I’m a big fan of Capacitance electric disc systems. It predated laserdisc and unlike laserdisc which was read with a laser, obviously, it was instead read by a stylus similar to a vinyl record. And they’re housed inside what is basically a floppy disc the size of a 12” vinyl record case. It’s an early success in home media technology, but it ultimately suffered from being so ahead of the curve since the simpler and more affective technologies of laserdisc and especially magnetic tape had come around by the time it was available to consumers.
      I’m also a big fan of weird attempts at portable video from the early 2000s, like VideoNow or movies on gameboy advance cartridges.

    Nice!! I love this flick because it's not just a polished and moody-looking supernatural thriller but also because at its heart it is a sleuthing adventure that's really creepy. I enjoy that kind of horror. We, the audience, want to get to the bottom of this whole ghastly curse, and our protagonist keeps digging.
    The ending is a bit of a letdown (I was expecting something with more fright, based on the feel of the whole film) but it does raise questions of ethics ... i.e. the Mom and boy are passing this thing on to innocent people who will be in danger. But overall _The Ring_ is a pleasure, and Hans Zimmer's score hits hard with its emotional themes and spooky lullabye and waltz sounds. Thanks!

    25:01 weird, did any notice the white VHS static line that moved up samara but not the rest of the tape? it actually seems to happen a few times during that interviews and i cant see that kind of distortion anywhere else on the recording. cool detail if im not imaging it lol

      I'm pretty sure it's smoke from a cigarette in the ashtray, and you only see it on Samara because she has black hair, but it blends in everywhere else.

      1:58-2:10, you can see how whispy it is and that it keeps coming in little tendrils, and the other monitor is garbage quality (on purpose, since it's an old camera and a camera recording a screen), so it's not picking up detail, but there's distortion there that could be the smoke.
      Also, each time the camera cuts back to Samara, you see more of it.

    Lore for anyone who cares: the lighthouse in this film is obviously in a fictional Washington town outside of Seattle, but it's actually the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport, Oregon, and it itself has its own ghost stories. I used to live there, and it's usually just a beautiful spot but on particularly dreary days I would remember this movie and feel super creeped out. haha

    I watched this around the time it came out so I was not affected by the 'Scary Movie' films, but I did not find the 'Ring' all that scary. It had a couple scary moments, but it was just more suspenseful and occasionally unsettling to me. It is a film that I have rewatched, but not because it a scary film.
    My parents had a video store in a small southern town until they sold it when I was in my early teens (I think within a year or two of this film's release) so I had seen a lot of much more scarier films at my relatively young age.

    The first time I watched this movie, I borrowed my friend's copy of it. And this was a copy that was actually on VHS. So back in 2003 when it was still recent. I watched it, and I got scared, but I did enjoy the movie. 4 days later I'm sitting in my room where I watched the tape, and water starts dripping down the TV screen just like in the movie. I freak out. Yell "No! I still have 3 more days!" and run out of my room. After I calm down some I realize it's raining, and there is a leak in the roof where rainwater has dripped through the attic, then through the ceiling of my room right above where my TV was. The water had been slowly dripping onto the VHS player and then down onto the TV screen, and I didn't notice anything until it got onto the screen. I have never been so relieved in my life. Still freaky that the one place the roof was leaking happened to be the area directly above my TV. It's part of the reason I'm reluctant to watch scary movies because weird stuff keeps happening whenever I watch one.

    With summer approaching, you guys have to react to sleepaway camp! It’s a fantastically bonkers movie. It’s both bad and amazing! And it only had a budget of $350k in made $11 million at the box office and the practical makeup effects are so great. Practical special fx makeup is the reason I love movies and horror movies in particular and I think given the budget the makeup is 10/10.
    Plus the cast are proper teens which is so rare in movies. And the outfits are insane but in the best way. Lots of Male crop tops and denim short shorts. It’s not lgbt friendly, but it has one of the most iconic horror movie endings ever.
