This movie was made during Canada having a big political debate on women's rights for abortion. The director was a supporter of women's body autonomy rights to abortion, so he put the abortion subplot in this classic Slasher movie.
I love that!!!
@@popcastbutscary now that both of y'all have seen the OG Black Christmas 1974 here's a unofficial Sequel I highly recommend checking out sometime (It's Me, Billy: A Black Christmas Fan Film)!
Damn.. that was 50 years ago. And yet now the topic is still debated 😂
@@tenerife_sea Very much agreed
If you want more of an explanation and context about the killer Billy there is actually a backstory. If you listen very closely he essentially tells you his backstory in the phone calls. He does four different voices. His own, his mother and father and sister Agnes. Also some sounds like a baby crying. In his sisters voice he cries and screams and begs "No Billy! No!". In his parents voices he says things like "Filthy Billy. I know what you did Billy. Where's the baby? Where Agnes? You left Billy alone with Agnes?!". In his own voice he mostly says disgusting, threatening, crazy things. And at one point he cries and begs Jess to stop him. To help him. Like he's having a lucid moment where he realizes how messed up what he's doing is.
Bob Clark who directed it said that Billy abused his little sister Agnes, and was abused himself, and probably killed his parents, and probably locked Agnes up in a basement for five or six years and she likely escaped. Hence why he sometimes refers to the girls he is terrorising as Agnes. And he clearly did something to Agnes's baby. Who is possibly his baby too if he'd been abusing her. Agnes is gone and so Billy is killing girls while seeing them as Agnes.
Something that I thought was pretty cool was that our final girl Jess was very feminist for the time. This was filmed in 1974 while the women's liberation movement was still in its early stages and women's rights were being strongly debated and challenged. Jess in the movie is stating very strongly and confidently, I don't want to be anyone's wife. I don't want to be anyone's mother. It's my body. My choice. Im not giving up all of my professional hopes and dreams to be a housewife and pop out babies. That was pretty bold for the time. Even when her boyfriend starts acting slightly threatening to her regarding the abortion she totally keeps her cool and refuses to flinch or let him see her look scared of him. Apparently the director was very passionate about equal rights for everyone and he wanted Jess to be a strong woman. It was incredibly brave of her to walk upstairs to try and help her friends even though she knew full well that she was risking her life.
'Black Christmas' is without a doubt the best christmas horror movie ever. Its so atmospheric and bleak. And it kind of set the blueprint for a lot of horrors that followed. Like Halloween etc. John Carpenter who made 'Halloween' loved 'Black Christmas' and you can see its influence on 'Halloween'. Like seeing things from the killers point of view. The final girl finding her friends murdered in a bedroom near the end of the movie like Laurie Strode did four years later.
The first time that I watched Black Christmas I initially wanted more of an explanation at the end of the movie. I grew up in the era of the big, grand killer reveal and I wanted a full explanation. I wanted to know what happens to Jess. In re-watches I realized that it is actually a far more chilling story leaving it that point and not explaining everything.
It leaves you feeling cold and empty and chilled. I love it.
Fantastic explanation! And it’s incredibly apparent how impactful Jess was as a character during such a time! I love this film so much 💖
It’s interesting that even as this film sets some of the tropes that slashers would follow for years, it also unknowingly subverts some of them. For instance, the girls are never sexualized here like they are in most other slashers. They are never shown undressing, and their sexual activity plays no role in their deaths. Clare seems the most reserved of the group, just like Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, and yet she is the first to die. Jess is the one girl we know is not a virgin, but she’s our final girl.
Oh that is wild! You’re right about the virgin being the first to die. And in comparison with the remake, this film is years beyond
This is the first time "the call is coming from inside the house" was done in a film, but it was an urban legend before this. When a Stranger Calls is also another classic movie that did it a few years later!
Starring a very young Carol Kane!
Yup. Both movies are based on true stories. When a Stranger Calls is based on a 1950s case in KS, and this Black Christmas movie is based on several cases in Montréal in the 50s-70s.
That scene when we can see the killer’s eye through the door crack stayed with me after my first watch, it’s so creepy!!!
It’s traumatic and iconic as hell 🔥
The girl with the glasses and curly hair is Aunt Voula from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”
I REALIZED AFTER FILMING! WHAT A MORON I WAS!
She’s also the house mother in the Black Christmas remake from 2006
sounds like the Pink Popcast has to do a video on that movie
My family has a Christmas tradition where my sisters, cousins and I all watch “White Christmas,” together. In response, my husband and his friends watch “Black Christmas” on the same evening.
That’s the sweetest, strangest, most human sounding tradition ever ❤
The sexual revolution is what you were trying to recall. Great reaction! Glad you guys liked it.
THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION! Thank you! And glad you enjoyed us enjoying it ✨
The producer/director had an idea for an anthology on different holidays that never got made. His idea was for different killers on different holidays. He told his idea to someone else. That some one else was a young director named John Carpenter. Clark had given the outline for Halloween to him.
Sounds like an urban legend itself 👀
The sorority house was Billy's childhood home, where Billy did "something" to his sister Agnes. He came home.
Ooof. Micheal Meyers, who???
@@popcastbutscary This movie inspired Halloween. I love them both haha
If it helps, i looked it up:
It says when there were talks about making a sequel, the director planned on Jess still being alive, so she could be the primary target for the killer in the second movie.
So in the creator's mind Jess is still alive
Aww that’s a (somewhat) happier ending lol
@@popcastbutscary ya probably the happiest ending we are gonna get from this movie lol
HORNY JAIL THY NAME IS RIZZO
BONK!
Now I just need to see you guys watch Ginger Snaps and I can die happy.
Also, per the ending, it’s my favorite ending in any horror movie. It’s so unsettling.
great ending.
Y'all commentary on movies showing inhaler use wrong had me cracking up 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's soo true!!! Great movie and reaction ya'll 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
That was probably the WORST I’ve ever seen it used
Oh my god!! Yes! Fantastic movie that was very progressive for its time in 1974! Carpenter definitely took a couple things from this and incorporated them into Halloween. I love when directors take influence from other films!
You can definitely see the influences!
i love how yall are just wavering over who the killer is xDD
it kept us GUESSING lolol
One of the really fun things of watching old(er) films is seeing the first instances of tropes that are common or commonly being subverted these days. It can ruin some of the fun as they dont hit the same for us as it would have originally but if your coming in with the right mindset its good. It was a lot of fun seeing you two react to this. Thank you!
Exactly! It’s an interesting intersection of “predictability” and “innovation”
The director of this film, Bob Clark, also directed A Christmas Story. I know you guys weren’t as enamored with that movie as you were with this one, but it’s funny to think that he directed two such distinctly different Christmas films! There are some fan theories that little Ralphie from A Christmas Story grew up to be Billy in Black Christmas!
whoaaa
Also Porky's! Can't forget about him directing Porky's. What a varying film career Bob Clark has had.
You know, it's so hard doing reactions because good opinions aren't always forged in two hours - sometimes you need to sit with something longer to truly appreciate or understand what it was trying to say. I feel like I could probably appreciate "A Christmas Story" more now than we did all those years ago
I liked seeing how older and modern Horro movies take from their "older" horror movie times
It's fun watching the "cliches" and "Tropes" be born!
I know many people hate remakes, but the remake of this film does a much better job of referencing the actual killer, I admit.
By the way, "the call is coming from inside the house" as a *concept* predates any of the movies that used it, as it was from a sort of urban legend that was referenced on radio first. Even Black Christmas isn't technically the first movie to use the concept. The exact wording that is now a meme is actually from When A Stranger Calls, which directly references the story, wherein a babysitter is being stalked by a stranger in the house while babysitting! :O
Such a scary legend
I actually like that in the end, Peter wasn't the killer because it makes it so that any man could be as asshole like him, and not just hyper-specific "insane" serial killer men. I think it makes the films pro-abortion and feminist arguments stronger in a way
I love watching these videos because I am not a horror movie fan, but it’s a nice way to increase my cinematic culture without having to watch the movie ? Plus I love people comments that explain everything in detail, love this community!
Same! It’s why I enjoy having this second channel - to educate myself!
Omg yes!!I feel the same. This is the only way I can watch Horror films😂
I've never been more hooked on a movie and more sad I was not satisfied by the ending. One of the best horror movies I've seen.
The ending has grown on me! I really like it now ✨✨
@@popcastbutscary I seriously thought Jess did it. I'm curious about the remake's.
This was so good! Will y'all please consider reacting to Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? One of my favorite movies of all time, Hollywood royalty in it, and l believe it kicked off the Grand Dame trope, also less flatteringly called hagsploitation
Oh my god I think I watched that years ago! Would be an interesting rewatch 🎉
Happy 2024 you guys!! I hope you had a wonderful holiday and nothing but good things come to you both this year. Love you!

Thank you so much ❤❤❤
I believe the "Caller is coming from inside the house" has been a radio thing since the 40's. I'm pretty sure at least one other movie did it before hand, but I can't remember which.
it's always a great twist!
I think When A Stranger Calls also has that line.
i'd love to see you watch nbc's hannibal on this channel!!! whether it was a binge or a first and last episode situation (which, tbh would be WILD), it's an amazing show with incredible performances and really cool aesthetics (as well as some truly bonkers scenes/plotlines)
Honestly I’ve heard that’s a phenomenal show!
@@popcastbutscary it really is, mads mikkelsen and hugh dancy are incredible in it and the character arcs are really well written, and i know it's the wrong channel but the cinematography is really cool 😂
This would be awesome! One of my favorite shows. That and season one of The Following.
Olivia Hussey…one of my first celebrity crush
Yay! This is such a classic. Halloween before Halloweiner.
😆
I don’t know if this is popular, but there’s a really good horror movie from I think around 2010 called the uninvited. It’s based off of a Korean horror movie but it’s the American version. If you guys haven’t seen it or even if you have, I’d love to see your reaction. It’s my favorite horror movie.
I feel like I watched that once YEARS ago but I can't remember anything other than it was good! Will keep in mind, thank you.
Never seen this movie before. I have heard of it many times though. I was surprised to see that abortion was mentioned in this movie. Given that Roe V Wade had only passed a year before this movie's release. And abortions were still very controversial at that time. I love this and your other channel. Even if l have different beliefs than the both of you. It's nice to see that this and your other channel is about movies. And you guys make me laugh.
Thank you!
This isn’t entirely true when it comes to abortion. Abortion wasn’t all that controversial after the Roe decision. It wasn’t until 1979 when conservative activist Paul Weyrich convinced the evangelical leaders to use abortion as an issue to get people to vote for republicans that abortion became an issue in the United States and something that was controversial. But at the time it wasn’t even considered an issue in the majority of Americans minds. The entire anti abortion movement was born in 1979.
So glad you uploaded this DAYS before my birthday. 🎉
Happy Birthday 🎉🎉🎉
Black Christmas > Halloween 💞
Hard agree!
What a treat! Gotta be honest this film's trailer makes me shake and when it plays on guess the trailer horror games I have to skip it lol this and the 80s were my time of horror lol
Try catching a screening in theaters if you can! Unbeatable experience!
@popcastbutscary heck yeah I will!!
I am definitely watching Black Christmas next Halloween.
I had no idea Olivia Hussey starred in this film - I absolutely love her!
She has such an old school presence I love.
The man that directed this, Bob Clark, also directed A Christmas Story.
Both horrific movies 😂
Mrs. Mac was the Houdini of hooch.
The 06 remake is a lot of weird fun, with a great cast of ladies.
I would also recommend Slumber Party Massacre 1 & 2, and the recent remake.
If only I hadn't had the SPM movies spoiled for me 😭
@@popcastbutscary What's to spoil? They aren't exactly twisty whodunits 😉 Regardless, they are still a lot of campy fun, especially if you haven't seen them.
“Rapunzel rapunzel let down you-
Oh wait wrong story
“Romeo Romeo where- you know what I honestly have not read the book so never mind
Oliva Hussey played Juliet in Romeo & Juliet!
@@popcastbutscaryI was just about to say she looked so familiar!
Have y’all seen ORPHAN? If not, please react to it-the cast is top notch!
Aww man we already know the twist 🥺
@@popcastbutscary oh man! bummer!
I can't imagine this movie without its comedy relief, because it would be entirely too tense and scary. Really, you take away Mrs. Mac and the Fellatio thing, I don't know if I could handle it, LOL. Billy is so frightening. Plus, not only does this film have tremendously effective atmosphere and pacing and mood, but some of the cuts from one scene to the next are so wicked and wry. Also, I have to give props and kudos to the music and sounds by Carl Zittrer; simply perfect. It adds so much to the suspense and creepiness.
I'm sure people have already mentioned here that John Carpenter sort of borrowed the concept for his Halloween movie when he talked to Black Christmas director Bob Clark about a possible sequel, and Clark said he had no interest in that but if he _had_ to do it then he would pick up the original story a few years later (the killer having been caught by the police shortly after his Christmas murder spree in the first movie) with Billy escaping a mental sanitarium and returning to the sorority house to kill once again.
Trivia fun: Black Christmas was music and movie icon Elvis Presley's favorite horror film.
I love that shirt Benji
Thanks for doing Black Christmas! I asked for it a long time ago and the film means a lot to me, oddly. Well, I love your guys' take on it!
edit* Yes, it's because of the female characters and the political message within the film.
You guys seen the early 1990s thriller, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle with the murderous nanny? Please tell me they used the inhaler right in that one. Inhalers play a significant role in the plot.
Oh shit really!?! That sounds like a cool movie regardless, we will have to check it out!
Excellent choice of film, that one is so slept on!
Random question to Benji and Rizzo: Are you two watching these movies by the decade??? I would love to suggest the terrifying US remake “The Ring” (Japanese original “Ringu”) but it came out in the early aughts so not sure if you’ll see this soon if you’re working your way through the 70s & 80s classics.
Happy New Year btw!!🎉🎊🙌🏾🥰
Heck i don't even like women and i ALSO think Olivia Hussey is a babe 😍
Hahahaha. True beauty transcends sexual preference!!
I mean she WAS Juliet in one of my favorite (and popular) renditions of Romeo and Juliet.
I suggest you two should check out....
Dario Argento's Opera 87'. The practical effects are great. And some scenes will have you covering your eyes. I dare you to look and NOT look away.
Oooo my god that sounds superb!
Actually I just googled it and that looks TERRIFYING 😮
Tenebre, also by Argento, is superior to Opera.
Damn, this movie is awesome.
what are your guys’ thought of the Mean Girls Musical movie adaptation?
We’re gonna go see it and review it on our main channel, @pinkpopcast
I'm here for the eye-candy ;-)
You guys should watch re-animator (1985) if you ever get the chance (jt’s very campy). Anywho, I love your content, you guys are incredibly funny and ur videos make my day
This is my first time seeing this movie but I noticed this…SPOILERS
When we see the killer’s eyes they are brown, but Peter’s are blue/green (the best scene to see this is the start and end of the chase scene)
You guys should do IT Chapter one and Chaptet 2, The Blair Witch project those are the two scariest movies.
I'm so jeloeous of you two I would love a straight friend that would stand by me like Rizzo. All my straight friends always make fun of my sexuality.
24:22 "We're getting married"
as opposed to ... "Will you marry me?"
You guys so should do the paranormal activity movies
I could see us eventually watching the first few, yeah
@@popcastbutscary mostly I just want to hear the funny comments that you'd make about the main couple in the movie and the paranormal in general
@@popcastbutscary that would be so fun!!!
Also if I'm correct the main girl with the long black hair plays Juliet??
Yup! That's her.
"A 70s accent"
lmao. Bruh...it's just an English accent. Olivia Hussey is British.
❤❤💖💖
He says “Thanks!”
💖💖💖
I hated that 😭😭 I wanted to know who it was for the sake of it but it was a great film
hahahaha we can't always get what we want (but I understand the frustration lol). The ending HAS grown on me since first watching :)
Halloween is shit compared to this.
Hahaha I feel so bad agreeing with you but YES! Black Christmas had my complete attention from beginning to end!
@@popcastbutscary just give into it. Haha
It's funny that in the Halloween one you were saying you like your horror movies to be bold don't just kill girls kill dogs kids guys everyone catches these knives then when you watch this one you're like see this is way better it starts off with killer pov just like Halloween but billy only kills acouple women slash girls that's it that's if he killed the girl in the park which he might have but we don't get a answer to it like Michael driving in Halloween no explanation lol but at least Michael killed acouple dogs girls and bob lol both Michael and billy be breathing nasty lol billy has a edge cause he can talk and do prank calls lol cops useless in this movie just like Halloween its funny how similar this is to Halloween Halloween literally is like a sequel to this lol the endings are very similar. I like both of them but my mom really liked Halloween tried v watching this and couldn't cause she's like this is so boring just lots of talking not much kills like Halloween but I guess she thought Michael they at least showed you know more about him he has more of a active role in the plot billy does just hangs put in attic and prank calls them til the end lol
why does white boy look 40?
Right!?!?
The 80s man
Keir Dullea, who played Peter, was 37 when he filmed this! He’s best remembered for starring in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
@@felixg5463 I'm talking about the reactor dumbass.
The first remake is decent. The second remake is what grosses out sewer scum.
Neither of them are really that good
@@popcastbutscary The second one is at least a remake. The third one is just using the stolen Black Christmas name.
The first reboot, forcing us to see the backstory for Billy, ruined his character. Stupid idea. We don't need to know why he is deranged and murderous, and it doesn't make the story more interesting to explain it.
You guys talk over some of the best dialogue and don't pay attention.
I mean we listened to a lot of it and absolutely payed attention. Please understand you are one person and your experience isn't the only experience. We don't all watch movies like you. Allow us to enjoy the films our way and maybe not waste your time leaving comments like this that don't really help anyone (you're just frustrating yourself).
PS: We have headphones and can multitask.
Please do The Exorcist (1973) if you both havebt seen it already. Amazing film.
Benji is gonna make me watch a few more recent films (since we've been doing classics) but neither of us has seen The Exorcist and are super excited to watch it... well... I am... Benji's scared lolol
I remember Olivia Hussy playing Juliet in Romeo and Juilet from the 60's
I haven't seen it but I heard they were both great
Among other roles, she played Mary the mother of Jesus in the 1977 TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth; and also played Norman Bates' mother Norma in the TV production Psycho IV in 1990 (the same year she appeared in Stephen King's miniseries It on ABC TV).
