  • Political candidates live in a storm of controversy. When a candidate's character comes under fire during a campaign, how they respond can make the difference between winning and losing an election.
In this episode of PODIUM, John F. Kennedy addresses fears about his loyalty to the Pope - a major controversy in his 1960 presidential campaign.
This historic speech was delivered to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association in Houston, TX, on September 12, 1960.
Political speech experts featured in this episode include:
    Adam Frankel
    Speechwriter for President Obama
    Robert Lehrman
    Professor of Speechwriting, American University
    Charlton McIlwain
Professor of Communication, New York University
    Jeff Shesol
    Speechwriter for President Clinton
    Michael Waldman
Director of Speechwriting for President Clinton
PODIUM is a bi-weekly series that embraces the art of public speaking and honors those with something to say. From historic political speeches, to contemporary commencement addresses, to wedding toasts, the series explores various genres of speechmaking and provides inspiring, insightful analysis including "how-to" content.

I was but 12 when they took this great man's life and I wept. I knew the dynamics of what happened and knew that those who are evil took his life. Having said that, he has a son who is now ridding this country of that same evil. Praise the Lord God for giving us a President who cares about ALL Americans.

Hopefully we get to the point where this doesn't matter for Muslims or any other religion either. The 1960s were turbulent but at least back then we had a more healthy, constitutional look at things like religion. It was a personal thing, but one that the candidates didn't make a bedrock of their campaign. And look, JFK went on to become one of our most beloved presidents and didn't take any orders from the Pope.

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label, "Liberal"? If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But, if by a "Liberal," they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people - their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties - someone who believes that we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say that I'm a "Liberal."

I do agree JFK was a great president but if you do some research into his assassination you’ll find that because he believed in séparation of church & state and to bring an end to the Vietnam war. Plus his dislike of the federal reserve bank & the CIA, he was murdered by the society of Jesus ( ie) the Roman Catholic Jesuit order. Fact.

King George VI was a friend of Hitler before WW II. He brought him to Lindon to meet with his government when Queen Elizabeth the daughter of King George was a small girl that gave Hitler the Nazi salute. Later, she hated Pres. Kennedy when he went to Germany and said, I am a Berliner.' (Ich bin ein Berliner). Because as Queen Elizabeth II she wanted East Germany to remain Communist so she could exploit Germany of its wealth for fecades to come. However, Pres. Ronald Reagan hated Communism and went to the concrete wall and declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear that wall down!" And the wall was torn down by the East Berliners and they were united with West Berliners finally -- Victor Isaac Alexander

He spoke very eloquently and idealistically, but the part that was repeated on the news, at the time, was the part where he emphasized that he'd be loyal to the USA more than to the pope. At least that's the part I remember, and it's the part that I most often see mentioned. I'm not sure if my memory represents what most people at that time heard and reacted to. I'd be interested to hear if this has been surveyed, or commented on by others who recall that time.

The person speaking about Kennedy’s speech here just took what he said totally wrong. He stated that Kennedy said his religious beliefs did not dictate his conscience in decisions. This is false. Kennedy said he would make secessions based on his conscious. His beliefs would naturally affect his conscience. What he did say is that no religion would dictate his decisions. In other words no other unity would tell him how to act or think.

What did Rockerfellor say we want a nation of workers not thinkers we need to be Zombies brainless. We need someone who has views like JFK.
