      @Cheddarific 18 дней назад

      @@Aria-un9iy you may be right, but I’m not fully convinced this is about society. I think it’s more about Trump in particular. I’m not convinced society was significantly more civil in the year 1960 with institutionalized racism, the Cold War, a growing feminist movement with strong traditionalist resistance, a strange number of Americans killing other Americans, etc. Nixon himself proves to be very uncivil on the recordings we get from his own wire taps a few years after this debate. I think the big difference specifically during the debates is that presidential candidates knew they were arguing against other American leaders and showed each other respect accordingly. They also didn’t want to appear so antagonistic and crazy. We see this civility again when George Bush hands over the White House to Obama less than a decade ago: ruclips.net/video/HcOgwJ9uAMQ/видео.html and even when Obama does the same to Trump. But any debate with Trump involved (or when Trump is meant to hand over the White House) is a disgusting shouting match with name calling, insults, dragging each other’s family members into it, etc. Back to civility from our candidates please! Keep it classy!

      I can imagine why you thought that when you were a child. We have so much media now and are exposed to so much that when we see people disagreeing like this today that we are so desensitized to it. It’s not a big deal. However, back in the 50s, when the only regular media were the 3ish channels on TV and daily newspaper, seeing something like this was much more jarring because there was no desensitization to these types of disagreements.
      I’m 33 years old right now and it is so refreshing to watch this after seeing the Biden/Trump debate last month. I completely agree with you that the current style of debate in our country is disgusting, unhinged, and dangerous. It really makes me ashamed that these are the people in our country for children to look up to. It has been sad to see American politics become media shows where candidates bash each other more than speak of actual policy. And the little policy they speak, they deliver it unintelligently. Not like Kennedy and Nixon here.

Nixon ran circles around him pertaining to foreign and domestic policy, private enterprise, the economics of what the role of president entails and just over all. Kennedy had a lot of pop and quick lines. Nixon had way more substance though. Goes to show people who have no idea what they're voting for, will blindly do so, merely based off of, "oh he looks presidential." 🤔
