Eisenhower always preferred his title as “General” rather than “Mr. President”. For him, earning five stars was more gratifying than being elected POTUS.
Especially since he was one of the few 5 star generals. 5 star generals are only around during times of war. When WW2 ended he was demoted back to a 4 star.
@@sammycas4850 Sammy, do you know that George Washington and John Pershing actually hold higher ranks? They were both General of the Armies, which is higher than a five star rank.
Eisenhower was one of our greatest Presidents 1. No wars during his 8 years in office. 2. Ended The Korean conflict. 2. Very good economy 3. He built our interstate highways connecting the country. 4. ONLY President to balance the budget EVERY year of his administration. 5. Only President to CUT federal spending during his 2 terms. From 20.4 percent to 18.4 percent 6. GDP grew 150 percent thru 1960. 7. The middle class exploded during his time in office. LBJ called Eisenhower every day to ask his advice on Vietnam until IKE told him, "You don't take the advice I have given you. Stop calling me. "
Well, it was great until it wasn't: Serious civil rights issues snowballed leading to the "civil rights era", nuclear weapons testing was out of hand, Vietnam was becoming the powder keg we'd soon see. For most of his administration the FBI denied the existence of organized crime in the US, directing its energies to communist threats instead (ruclips.net/video/GkTiVZwMPlw/видео.html).
You can tell Kennedy was legitimately concerned about the situation and wanted Eisenhower's counsel about his course of action. It is so refreshing to hear Eisenhower offer his support while urging Kennedy to be cautious. The amount of respect here is something that the current American political landscape hasn't seen for quite some time.
It would be pretty shocking if a President was anything other than "legitimately concerned" about the imminent end of the human species. Although, Donald Trump probably would've waved it off like it's nothing. In fact I'm pretty sure he actually has done that in conversations about nuclear war.
Too bad Kennedy didn’t follow Ike’s advice to avoid the Bay of Pigs invasion debacle. Of course, Ike was had his own issues with illegally overthrowing other foreign leaders who weren’t interested in having the US meddle in their affairs at the behest of corporate or military industrial complex players.
They weren’t political opponents. Eisenhower was barely a republican both parties wanted him to run for them and if he were here today he would be called a socialist like Bernie for wanting to continue the new deal of FDR with the highway programs.
General Eisenhower preferred to be addressed as so instead of being referred to as "President Eisenhower" which is surprising since he is a former Commander in Chief of all Armed Forces.

My favorite part is when he refers to him as "the General." Kennedy was a WW2 Navy Officer and purple heart recipient. He respected Eisenhower not just as a predecessor, but as a commander.
JFK kept all three of the living former presidents up to speed on the Cuban Missile Crisis as it was happening but he clearly valued Ike's opinion very much, for obvious reasons.
Kennedy had great respect for Ike. Being the general and great president he was Kennedy looked to him for advice and help. Just think a Democrat and a republican working together. Not today.

First off, an amazing discourse between two national leaders. Blunt, respectful and concise. Any senior executive's time is concise. Literally to the minute. President Kennedy afforded his predecessor the appropriate courtesy, General. After office, George Washington insisted on being referred to as General Washington, vice Mr. President; after his term this was the custom for military office holders. Also, President Kennedy was asking advice from the former Commander of Allied Forces for the European Theater. All together, both men were gracious, respectful and gentlemanly. I pray our nation returns to this decorum, respect for opposing views.
"Thank you very much, sir!" The manner in which GEN Eisenhower, a former 2-term president, signs off to his successor is simply a marvel of courtesy & respect -- which, regrettably, we have lost in the 21st century.
General of the Army Eisenhower had been reinstated to being listed as Active Service by President Kennedy by this time. I imagine it was done to make it easier to discuss classified and military matters with each other. This also means that President Kennedy is General Eisenhower’s Commander-in-Chief hence the “Sir”. Though it’s obvious both men held each other in such high regard that the rank was not a prerequisite for the respect given.
It’s an amazing contrast of two leaders. 20 years before this, Kennedy was a young 1st Lt. in the US Navy, and 5 Star General of the Army Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander against Germany. Both became the Commander in Chief and I’m beyond impressed with the wisdom and humility Kennedy possessed to draw upon the council of General Eisenhower. Eisenhower was magnificent providing Kennedy with a few extra considerations while supporting Kennedy’s course of action, and showed pure courtesy and respect to the sitting President. Duty and Service at the highest level is what we got to listen in on.
It's been a long time since we had a real veteran as President, unless you count Reagan's "service" in Hollywood during WWII and Bush II's "service" protecting Texas during the Vietnam War. I don't.
Also, don't forget that Kennedy was only 45 years old at the time. He was incredibly poised and thoughtful in his remarks, especially when speaking with a man of the experience of Eisenhower.

It would happen now, most of modern political divide is a show to prevent people switching parties. You can thank social media. When it comes to large geopolitical issues, both sides almost always completely agree. They follow the neoliberal geopolitical guidestones that were laid out long ago, arguably right after WW2. Perfect example of this is support for Taiwan and Pelosi’s recent visit to the island. Same thing happened during the gulf war, 911, Libya, etc. there is a reason US hegemony lasted this long, an unspoken agreement between both parties that began almost a century ago.
@@wdavidson729 Well yes, established in december of 1943. At that point the war was essentially already over. I don't think many Americans really know how little impact the USA had on a pure military scale regarding world war II in Europe. Sure they provided a lot of supplies to the UK, but they "only" lost about 49.000 troops in Europe, all of whom were military personnel. Compare that to the total death toll in Europe alone during that war, which was around 15-20 million people. So the USA's losses were "only" around 0.25%. And the foreign aid was mostly to the UK, who paid back all those loans. The USSR received almost nothing, despite popular belief.
@@taserrrYou are espousing University drivel. US support to the USSR 1939-1946- Most visibly, the United States provided the Soviet Union with more than 400,000 jeeps and trucks, 14,000 aircraft, 8,000 tractors and construction vehicles, and 13,000 battle tanks. However, the real significance of Lend-Lease for the Soviet war effort was that it covered the "sensitive points" of Soviet production -- gasoline, explosives, aluminum, nonferrous metals, radio communications, and so on, says historian Boris Sokolov. "In a hypothetical battle one-on-one between the U.S.S.R and Germany, without the help of Lend-Lease and without the diversion of significant forces of the Luftwaffe and the German Navy and the diversion of more than one-quarter of its land forces in the fight against Britain and the United States, Stalin could hardly have beaten Hitler," Sokolov wrote in an essay for RFE/RL's Russian Service.
@@Catch_The_Irishman "By the end of the war, the Soviet Union produced 30.3 million rifles; 1,476 million machine guns; 516,648 artillery guns; 347,900 mortars; 119,769 tanks and self-propelled guns; 265,600 army trucks; 213,742 military aircraft; 2 cruisers; 25 destroyers; 52 submarines." Now despite popular belief, the USSR actually produced the overwhelming majority of their war equipment themselves. Depending on the year, it's anywhere from 99-95% produced by themselves. They had a few problems with certain high end products, which they bought or received from overseas. I never said the USSR would've destroyed Germany on their own, but with Britain involved they probably would, like I said America didn't have a major impact in the European war. Mind you, lend-lease does not count as a direct impact, that's just an investment. The UK paid all their world war 2 loans back, I think they made their last payment in 2004. Now this is important to distinguish, because Germany wouldn't have been able to produce what they did without the trade with other nations like Spain, Italy, Romania, Hungary, Sweden, ... Not to mention that Spain had multiple divisions as "volunteers" in the eastern front, despite being "neutral". And Romania, hungary and Italy were all also fighting on the eastern front. So what I'm saying is that there wouldn't have been much difference if the USA wasn't directly involved in the European war. The impact from the USA came mostly in the pacific, and shortened the war with the landing in Normandy. But by 1944 the Germans wouldn't have been able to hold back the USSR and invasions/trade interdiction from the UK. One can not forget how much problems the UK had caused in Africa, which was already dominated by the allies, cutting off essential oil and rubber resources from the German war machine.

Respect and recognition by JFK of his predecessor's knowledge and experience, both political and military, and Ike's willingness to give it regardless of their party affilations. This is how real leaders of all kinds behave.
Jfk listened to Ike. It's so great how Ike is respectful calling him mr president. Jfk listens and really wants to here what Ike is saying. I really hope we have that now.

General Eisenhower had a lot to offer the President in this brief conversation and both men understood it's importance. The General kept his answers brief, but thorough, and President Kennedy gave him time to articulate his points without interruption. The General knew all to well the enormous pressure President Kennedy was under and did not wish to waste his time. It's incredible to have this part of our history archived and publicly available.
Two American Presidents on opposite side of the Isle, working together for the benefit of America. Those were the good old days when Patriots were still in charge.
I feel privileged to even hear this recording, regardless of if the matters spoken about are in the past, and the ramifications have already been established, completed and hashed out. This is a beautiful part of yt, it acts as an archive for political history, and is much better accessible than say, the library of Congress.
the fact we have these recordings is next to unbelievable .. so much history is lost or murky in the unknown .. this type of historical context cuts right through so much of that. we're very lucky.
JFK should have sought Ike's counsel before he (Kennedy) went ahead with the Bay of Pigs invasion, just 3 months upon entering the Oval Office. That's what got him (and the world) into the mess.
Eisenhower would have invaded Cuba if he were president and the Soviet Union would have fired their tactical nukes that we didn’t know about. JFK was able to push back the war mongers.
Eisenhower built the u.s. interstate system..one of the single most important accomplishments of a president.still has a massive impact down to this day
This is the advantage of having leadership with military backgrounds. Respect, cooperation, patriotism, and the ability to humble yourself to ask for help. Not some idiot who thinks he knows everything. These were EDUCATED men. Not playground bullies.
At least two years of military active duty service in uniform should be required of all presidential candidates, so that they know who they are affecting as commander-in-chief. Congress should amend the Constitution and add this requirement.
These men between them won a world war and prevented one. Notice there was no small talk and it was over in a few minutes. And they both spoke in coherent sentences! Those were the days...
Fascinating. I got the impression of mutual respect from each man in the way they address each other as Mr. President and General. Eisenhower was obviously older yet still called the president Mr. President and the president still called Eisenhower General despite him having been retired for many years.
Pretty dope, JFK has so much poise and maturity in this convo, and still respects Eisenhower’s every word, as if he was listening to his grandfather, pretty dope!
A big.. beautiful.. call. People have said maybe it's the best..? Maybe it was a perfect call.. I don't know, i've made a lot of calls.. but maybe it was perfect?
Ike was a great man and leader! He was perhaps the most underrated President we had. JFK was a visionary and very charismatic. Notice how civil and respectful they are of each other. Traits that are completely lost in politics today.
Why are people so surprised that Kennedy was referring to him as General lol. While he wasnt active duty, Eisenhower was reinstated to 5 star general after his presidency was over. Every 5 star keeps the rank until death, ready to be recalled for service if need be. The only time a 5 star was removed was when Eisenhower was elected president as that is a civilian office and not a military one.
@@sandman5587 I don't think so, the President is commander in chief but is not a part of the military. Our military has a civilian leader, so they're not lead internally by one of their own. The President is the highest authority of the executive branch which includes the military.
I know Ike preferred “general”, but something about the interaction feels like that title makes it clear the sitting president is asking for a double check of his strategy from a military general point of view and not so much POTUS point of view. Fascinating piece of history.
I was in the middle of the missile crisis in 1962. I was in the Navy and the captain of the ship (I hate calling it that because it was a reconditioned pre WWII tanker) I was on volunteered us to go to the Caribbean even though we were not scheduled to go. In fact, we were pretty much last on the list. But the captain was striking for Rear Admiral and didn't care about the effect his choice has on a pretty much green crew. We had just gotten back from a shakedown cruise at Gitmo several months before and still didn't have the routine quite set in. So, when we left we found out in the middle of floating around the Caribbean that no one knew where we were. We were not assigned to a convoy but on our own and really didn't do much to refuel many ships. To us, it was pretty much a 45 day vacation. But when Kennedy found out that we weren't even supposed to be there (due to a letter written to him by the girlfriend of one of the men on board) he contacted the captain directly and really reamed him out. It wasn't long after that the captain was replaced. Kennedy showed that he truly was the "Commander in Chief" with that.

He might be an "American Hero" but he is no saint. Einsenhower is directly responsible for the many MANY coups and dictatorships that plagued latinoamerican countries in the second half of the 20th century, he gave the green light for the CIA to help the American banana companies to depose DEMOCRATICALLY elected presidents in the name of "fighting the communists" when in fact it was just to push the growth of American Companies and American agendas. One example is Guatemala, in 1954 the president of Guatemala started to take land off of the banana companies (The banana companies controlled almost all fertile territory in the country and even then they bought extra territory so that competitors couldn't use it) and started giving some of it to the people, as he was also demanding a minimum wage for the workers employed by the banana companies, of course these companies went directly to the U.S government and demanded a solution, the solution was to label the president of Guatemala a communist and the breaking point was the president buying weapons off of a soviet country, but those were only bought because the president knew Americans were about to invade and he needed to replenish his army, of course no one in the west would sell to Guatemala because the U.S would get mad at them for supplying weapons to a country they were having bad blood with so he had to buy off of the " communist enemy". After that the CIA tried to attack the capital of the city with mercenaries and the army of a Guatemala general that was in the U.S side that was set to become the dictator, these attacks failed so the CIA resorted to terror and propaganda tactics in the population, demoralizing citizens and army men alike, it all ended when the president of Guatemala saw how he was running out of support and wanting for the bloodshed to end he resigned and gave the power to the U.S backed dictator. The now ex-president of Guatemala died years later in exile, not ever stepping foot in the country, his own country, that he was trying to help. This U.S backed dictatorships directly led to the Civil War of Guatemala that started around 1963 that would last more than 35 years, where thousands went missing, a literal genocide of indigenous people happened and the country was left in economic shambles. Effects of this civil war can still be felt today, and trials of the U.S backed dictators during the genocides in the civil war are still ongoing, of course none of them squealing that the U.S had any involvement or that they acted upon orders of them to erradicate communism in the population of Guatemala during the civil war (indigenous people were thought to have helped "communists rebels", so that's why they were massacred).
JFK was steady in the face of the crisis, and he gave his brother Bobby the task of dealing with the Soviet representative. The brothers managed to avoid WW3 and God bless them for it.

@@marcusashwell8314 Not in my wildest imagination! And, I express this for a whole variety of reasons.
@@marcusashwell8314 Biden and Trump are two clowns. These two were legitimate presidents.

Eisenhower was also the Supreme Allied Commander for all of Europe during WWII.
@@Catch_The_Irishman "By the end of the war, the Soviet Union produced 30.3 million rifles; 1,476 million machine guns; 516,648 artillery guns; 347,900 mortars; 119,769 tanks and self-propelled guns; 265,600 army trucks; 213,742 military aircraft; 2 cruisers; 25 destroyers; 52 submarines."
Now despite popular belief, the USSR actually produced the overwhelming majority of their war equipment themselves.

We then got a message, uh, a public one, in which he said he would do that if we withdrew our missiles from Turkey. We then, as you know, issued a statement that we couldn't get into that deal. So uhh, we then got this message this morning, so we now have to wait to see how it unfolds, and there's a good deal of complexities to it, uhh if the uhh, withdraw of these missiles, technicians, and the cessation of subversive activity by them, well we just have to set up satisfactory procedures to determine whether these actions will be carried out. In addition, my guess is that by the end of next month we're going to be toe-to-toe in Berlin anyway, so that, I think this is important for the time being because it requires quite a step down really for Krushchev, on the other hand I think that as we all know they just probe and their word's unreliable, so we just have to stay busy on it.
E: Yeah, as I said before Mr. President, these people do not equate Berlin with [unintelligible] with anywhere else. I agree but keep in mind most the world’s worst dictators had military backgrounds as well.
喬拜登
At least two years of military active duty service in uniform should be required of all presidential candidates, so that they know who they are affecting as commander-in-chief. Congress should amend the Constitution and add this requirement.
Yep, I agree, Biden is terrible. We badly need Mr Trump back in the WH. At least he loved this country
@@johnadams1281 How in the hell did a Russian get on this site?
These men between them won a world war and prevented one. Notice there was no small talk and it was over in a few minutes. And they both spoke in coherent sentences! Those were the days...
Former Lieutenant Jack, USN. getting sage advice and pointed questions from General Ike, former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Love it.
And a 5 star general at that!
Fascinating. I got the impression of mutual respect from each man in the way they address each other as Mr. President and General. Eisenhower was obviously older yet still called the president Mr. President and the president still called Eisenhower General despite him having been retired for many years.
Ike preferred to go by “General”, even when he was President.
Pretty dope, JFK has so much poise and maturity in this convo, and still respects Eisenhower’s every word, as if he was listening to his grandfather, pretty dope!
A Perfect Call. A Tremendous Call.
A huge call
@@vintageb8 big call
Mattias Jansson, “Beautiful” call…
Mattias Jansson - Don’t say, “tremendous”; a certain former Oval Office occupant has forever ruined that word...
A big.. beautiful..
Agreed. Worth noting that Ike had the full respect and trust of FDR as well.
Truman sacked MacArthur . . .
But isnt the president technically a general?
People are surprised because he doesn't have to do it.
@@sandman5587 I don't think so, the President is commander in chief but is not a part of the military. Our military has a civilian leader, so they're not lead internally by one of their own. The President is the highest authority of the executive branch which includes the military.
Moreover, the title President lasts only as long as one is president. After that, it's Governor Clinton, Governor Bush, and so on.
The respect such gentleman had for each other then, we need more of that.
Unbelievable the pressure of having the well being of so many lives resting on your shoulders. A heart of gratitude goes out to you Mr. President.
The magnitude of Respect President Kennedy has to President Eisenhower by calling him “General” is next level Respect
I know Ike preferred “general”, but something about the interaction feels like that title makes it clear the sitting president is asking for a double check of his strategy from a military general point of view and not so much POTUS point of view. Fascinating piece of history.
Double checked diplomacy
I think President Kennedy was frying bacon while he was having this conversation. What a guy.
Probably, radiation damage from the sun has cause the weird popping sounds
To think I learned about this In school and can go on RUclips to listen to the event is truly amazing.
Wow. The Tibet statement was interesting. President Kennedy almost had a deferential tone in his voice. Really good recording.
Holy!!!!
In Montreal as a 9 year old. Ait raid sirens a few times....and lights out.
I remember my dad shutting off the lights.....This of course was a practise round.
Wow...I wish you wrote more...sorry to see the story end. Lol
There's only one word: fascinating. I was born in '58, and IMO these were the two greatest presidents in my lifetime. So, as a conscious , self-aware human being, I have never seen leadership even close to either one of these guys. And if you go back 15, 20 years from this date, you had FDR or Truman. Where is the leadership now?
Two war heroes who experienced the the terror of combat and fought against an existential threat to humanity. They were brothers in arms. As a Canadian I respected and admire them both. I weep at the calibre of leadership in the US today.
Kennedy should've invaded Cuba. Your Prime Minister wouldn't have been born and all would have been well in the rest of the Americas.
@@chungusmaximus526 huh? You obviously didn't know the Justin Trudeau is the son of former PM Pierre Trudeau and Margret Trudeau? As for invading Cuba..I know its very American to think they are entitled to invade any country they don't like but that attitude hasn't really worked out if you think of Vietnam Iraq and Afghanistan. It didn't work out for the attempted invasion of Canada either-thank the goddess. Every time I drive by the Niagara river I am so grateful that our ancestors pushed you out.
Obviously I do as I met Pierre Trudeau in the 70's.He provide the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and repatriated the constitution for the Imperialist British, He was a great PM , brilliant and cared deeply for this country. I mourned his death
I weep at the calibre of leadership in our country too. No one to vote for.
@@witheringi9492 I think you are missing the point, as it sounds like you were not alive during this...I WAS...
To me, this is true patriotism. JFK and General Eisenhower are American heroes. Their actions helped to bring down the Soviet Union and their collaboration is outstanding.
what brought down the Soviet Union was the war in Afghanistan war and saudi Arabia increasing oil production in the market which made the oil prices go down. read before you talk nonsense.
And Ronald Reagen too
He might be an "American Hero" but he is no saint.
LBJ and Carter almost undid all their work...
The last democrat that wasnt a warmonger.
The most wholesome conversation I've ever heard discussing the potential of nuclear war. Politicians were once gentlemen, you know that?
It was only relly during this period and only at the top with these guys, they were massive outliers.
I love the conversation between two great leaders as much as all these insightful comments. God bless you all and the souls of these men.
JFK was steady in the face of the crisis, and he gave his brother Bobby the task of dealing with the Soviet representative.
The brothers managed to avoid WW3 and God bless them for it.
General LeMay, the mad bomber, hated the Kennedys for this outcome. It is not a coincidence that LeMay went to Bethesda Naval Hospital to gloat during the autopsy of his hated adversary.
Bobby Kennedy wasn't as cool as his brother
I think it's very powerful we have presidents working together like this, with all their specialized and worldly experience.
Having General Eisenhower for an advisor is really quite something!
JFK got smote.
He didnt have much worldly experience.
Couldn’t boil it down to the mathematical equity.
Wow so glad he allowed these recordings. Its incredible to hear a real POTUS at work on real international issues. Today all we would hear is 'if you can do me favour'. JKF had morals.
Subtle reference there. I am curious. Have you read the true transcript yourself or just heard Mr. Schiff's or the news medias "parody" (Mr. Schiff's own word) distortion of it? 🌠The more you know....🌟
I'm a conservative...this is one of the most pivotal calls in history....the respect...General....he didn't fully rely on his war staff....he heavily relied on the Supreme Commander of WW2 and previous President.....You don't hear that often although in today's climate....JFK would be considered a Republican
Am not an American but I read so many books from ww1 ,ww2,and up until Eisenhower last term and In my opinion he is by far the greatest general and leader in American history ofcourse I won't count the founding fathers...
He is an absolutely an incredible person very wise calm and understanding and by far he is one of my favorite characters of all time his leadership and how he handle crisis is incredible
John Newman says he was a evil man who was on Allen Dulles to assassinate Lumumba and Hammerskjold in the Congo telling him to get it done like the wizard of oz and he was president when Os defected and was allowed back into the country with no issue even got a loan from the State Department hmmm
Don't sleep on George Marshall.

I think he's the single greatest individual in all of human history. There will be no one like him for thousands of years
