  • Well, this doesn’t really count as a breakdown but she does need some tinkering!
This AWESOME 64 Nova is going from northern CA home to East Texas! With 79k original miles she’s kind of a cream puff.

You and Aaron are the reason I bought a Firebird in California that didn't run and drove it home. I've had so many adventures, seen amazing places, and met the greatest people because I've said yes to wildness and opportunity. The worst thing is not breaking down- the worst thing is to regret never experiencing what we wanted to.

Years ago, I bought a chevy pickup for $100 in FL. I set off for CT. Broke down in Daytona (rad cap) and again before I left FL (top hose exploded). In Jacksonville, I lost the rear U-joint. A 20 min job and back on the road. In Scranton, PA (jct 81 - 84) I blew the bottom hose. It used a bunch of oil but made the trip.

My sister and I drove my ‘76 Bronco (pre-restoration) from Houston, TX to Tacoma, WA in November 2005. We broke down over and over again. It turned out to be two problems - a worn out alternator and a bad starter cable. When the alternator went out - we were driving up north of Sacramento and it started getting foggy, so I whenever I turned on the lights, it would die. Finally, the battery ran out of juice in Southern Oregon and it completely died in the side of I-5. Luckily my sister had a AAA account and we had cell phone coverage, so we got towed to Roseburg, OR and got the alternator replaced the next morning and made it to WA. As you say, it made the trip one to remember!

Enjoying the scenery. Brought back memories. I took my German wife down the PCH the first time we visited California to see family. It was even more fun when you get to see things thru someone else' eyes. Her head was on a swivel. She wore out my camera. (Of course, she dipped her toes in the Pacific... ) Thank Gawd you finally had some drama. It was getting boring. Not really. Have fun! We're watching. And enjoying.

In the 50's and 60's I can remember driving over the Santa Cruz Mountains to the coast many many times for beach parties at Pescadero, San Gregorio and a lot more beaches. Went charter boat fishing out of Half Moon Bay a lot. Just never ending fun, and fantastic weather on the northern California coastline. Thanks for the beautiful memories! (Ex) wife's first car in high school (in 1976) was a Nova similar to that one, a 1964, 6 cylinder with a powerglide. Her mother had an AMC Ambassador wagon, and would ask if she could borrow the Nova for shopping, because it was more nimble to maneuver in a parking lot. (Ex) wife traded it in for a newer Nova with air conditioning . I had 2 Nova's, a 1972 and a 1974 and miss them both. Back in "the day", Nova's were very reliable. Love the fact that the car is being driven, and not on a trailer. Great way to enjoy each other's company.

When me and ALL my family used to do runs to Vegas or Laughlin the things we always remember are the lil break downs or quirky hiccups that happened during our adventure. Like, fixing a Harley stator at 3am in a parking lot under a lamppost in a 24hr Walmart or losing an exhaust bolt on the road to Frisco. (Thankfully others riding had an extra). Memories for sure. 😋👍🏽

It had a burned out headlight and an upper radiator hose that was questionable, that I also changed. Made sure everything worked. Drove it from Des Moines, Iowa to Bullhead City, Arizona. Didn't have a lick of trouble the whole way. It was fun. Did I mention that I also didn't have a driver's license? Drove like a dream, just looked like crap. Paid $300 for it.

So cool y'all got to do the PCH. Neat Nova to do the trip in.
Years ago, I used to go to Watsonville, CA for strawberries by the truck load. I'd camp overnight in a huge parking area off of hwy 1 [PCH] shared by Skipper's Restaurant and a steakhouse in the Moss Landing [population about 200, at the time] inlet. Had a seafood omelette, alfresco, while watching the sea lions play. Good times! Favorite spot in CA for breakfast. Sadly, the original structure burned...

After surfing for up and down California for 35 years, I am sitting here watching the video and can identify all of those beaches. The beach you walked down to is Montara State Beach. Tons of undertow, really big waves come in there, and a really common place to spot big white sharks in the lineup. Lots of good times and good memories. It's definitely a beautiful drive. lol Funny comment about Santa Cruz too. I don't surf there anymore, way too much weed in that town. It's nasty and dirty with the hippies, homeless, and potheads creeping all over the place.

The PCH is awesome! Everyone should do it! Just went over from Austin in February to Ventura and up to SF on the 1. Converted my ‘16 sprinter and enjoyed camping the coast. Stayed in Santa Barbara and Big Sur. Visited a friend in SF then high tailed it to Seattle for a couple months of work on a previous clients home. Got back in Austin and decided to head up to Pennsylvania in July to dodge some Texas heat. Picked up a portable ac unit. Definitely more comfy camping west coast than in Alabama in July but stayed cool. Then… heading north out of Chattanooga the cp4 pump was disintegrating and engine light… after a purchase of an obd2 reader made it to Knoxville where the van sat for two months in limbo trying to navigate the cause with the shop and insurance company. Water in fuel likely cause. Over 16k to repair. 😩 bailed out of it and traded it in. Sacrificed $$$. Car problems on the road are not fun especially solo with two little dogs in 98 degree heat. Talk about anxiety. Still recovering. Note to travelers… don’t drive on Saturdays. It’s a long wait till Monday morning when shops open.
Btw… doesn’t Texas have enough spiders? 😂 no hitch hikers. We have tarantulas here😳 (editing as I’m watching… those sirens were for that fuel spill weren’t they… California🫣)

My friends 69 GTO dropped a tie rod going about 80 mph when he banged 3rd gear on our country road. That didn't end well. He totalled his car when it drifted into our open ditch and ultimately hit a pole while on his side. Bent the car in a 45 degree at the rear window!! Looked like he had a 2 ft high rear spoiler! I used live right there ,I'd go to that restraunt very often ,usually fried zucchini, garlic bread, I've done that drive a million times, and then run down to Monterey,Pacific Grove then down Big Sur,all the way to Joshua Tree ,on the way back up the coast to Santa Cruz we'd stop at the hot springs right on the side of the cliff and soak all night with that funny smell you were talking about

As Mark Twain allegedly said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." People underestimate how chilly the California coast truly is. Looks like you're having a great trip.

Yeah. Think Candlestick Park in San Francisco! Can't remember if they tore that down. Seems like they did.

You found the Texaco sign but you missed the left turn into the small town of Pescadero where you can get some of the best bread made, artichoke heart & garlic seasoned fresh made bread.

I bought my first car when I turned 16 in 1978, it was a 1964 Chevy Nova 4 door, and a V8 283 with AC, and a powerglide! $300 and I had to rebuild the front end.

I wish all vehicles were still like that Nova cause you can actually see the engine without wires and stuff running everywhere. They were so simple to repair and they'd run 4ever as long as everything was kept up on em. I used to rebuild starters alternators and carburators and all that cause it was alot cheaper doing it thataway and now I don't know if they sell rebuild kits for stuff like that. My dad taught me to do everything that way and It saved me alota money and it didn't take very long to fix em

Totally gnarly dude keep it California
That little Nova, once you get it tuned up and go through everything will probably end up being one of the most reliable little cars that you'll ever have trouble free I had a Nova wagon with a 283 with the two speed transmission in high school that I bought for $50 because the guy thought it had an oil pump going bad in it,, adjusted the lifters cap rotor wires plugs points condenser and rebuilt the carburetor change the fluid and filter in the transmission make sure all my fluid levels were up to par and I drove that thing for a year and a half with regular maintenance oil air etc etc and it never missed a beat never left me stranded cold weather hot weather didn't make a difference it just chugged right along

Have you checked the lash on the steering box? I remember Garfield needed some adjustment when y'all got him from me and that could make noise.

The Cali coast can be chilly thanks to the current getting well refrigerated by the current coming from Alaska. Surprising many visitors.

Beautiful along the central California coast, living there was fantastic. With the housing market crash this month in California, pick out a vacation home, you can Air BNB for your viewership. The drive going North of SF is also great, all the way through Oregon to the Columbia River. Enjoy!
