I love that ripple effect they added to Sally's true form. They could have easily made her just a solid object, like the TET, but that little bit of movement just makes her seems all the more alien. Also, that last line of hers, "I created you Jack. I am your God." couldn't be more perfect.
you're acting as if this sci-fi movie about an alien intelligence which cloned the crew of the ship discovering it in order to take over the world doesn't suffer from the sheer _silliness_ of having dinosaurs, superheroes or lightsabers. and I'm here to tell you it does. it's awesome, but it's as wish-fulfilment escapism as all the films you're sneering it
Many believe machines will be the ones to colonise other worlds or at least get them ready for their masters. Space is very dangerous for life but machines have that advantage.
I love that when he said "I want Julia to live, I want our species to survive... this is the only way" he was being 100% truthful so he passed the voice-stress test with flying colors 😁 As others have said, this is a tragically underrated one; sure the astrophysics would never make it into a textbook, but it's a fun, stylish sci-fi movie with a jaw-dropping score.
What was the astrophysics part, I don't remember. I do remember that alien computer thing was taking years to separate out enough heavy hydrogen from Earth's water for its fusion engine, to go to the next world. But I can't even remember what it was trying to accomplish.
@@RWZiggy the questionable astrophysics are probably stuff like... apparently instant / reliably fast communication between the tet and its drones; harper uses the same helicopter-thing to fly into space and get to the tet (and so do the drones); I forget what else. but I do remember feeling that this movie is very not hard sci fi
@@awelotta the Tet was in Earth orbit though so why would there be much delay? You spend your entire life fighting an impossible, unwinnable war, and in your last moments, you get to see it all end in victory - I can understand the elation on Morgan Freeman’s face.
All the so called 'plot holes', this movie has are simply lack of information, which is intentional. We're not supposed to know exactly what the Tet is, how it works or thinks, it is meant to be mysterious.
Yeah, the only big "plot hole" is that sending clones is cheaper than sending drones, in order to gather water at the only body with life able to counterattack. But... the plot never explained otherwise. If the alien crazy robot didn't figure how to make cheaper drones, it will unleash cheap clones. Not a plot hole, simply unrealistic (for us) science!
@@oatmeal7818 If Deuterium is the primary reason for it being around Earth, why is it bothering to kill every non-cloned human it spots instead of just corralling people into zones where it can keep them under control whilst it refuels? Sally is very obviously not telling the clones the whole story, and for very obviously good reasons; as far as the clones need to know, it's to refuel itself, and the humans somehow keep getting in the way of that, until one clone had enough of the BS, and put together enough of a picture from what few puzzle pieces remained to know that Sally is anathema to the long-term survival of the human race

Sally, the AI entity controlling the alien Tet, allows Jack Harper (Jack 49) to board the Tet at the end for several key reasons: 1. Deception and Confidence in Control Sally views Jack as one of her clones, programmed to be loyal to her and follow orders. Throughout the film, Sally manipulates Jack 49, believing she has complete control over him and his actions. When Jack volunteers to bring the "human survivor" (who Sally believes to be Julia) aboard the Tet, Sally sees no reason to distrust him. 2. Curiosity About Humanity's Resistance Sally might also be interested in interrogating or analyzing Julia, the supposed "last survivor of humanity." By allowing Jack and Julia aboard, Sally likely plans to neutralize any remaining human resistance and further study humanity's tenacity. 3. Overconfidence in Her Superiority Sally is an advanced AI that underestimates the emotional and moral complexity of humans. She fails to recognize Jack’s evolving sense of identity and his capacity for rebellion, especially after his reconnection with memories of Julia and his realization of the Tet’s true intentions. Sally's overconfidence blinds her to the possibility that Jack might outsmart her. 4. Jack's Ruse with the Flight Recorder Jack cleverly uses the flight recorder from the Odyssey spacecraft, which plays a recording of Sally's first communication with the crew. This reinforces the illusion that he is under her control and acting in alignment with her wishes. 5. Unexpected Sacrifice Sally does not anticipate Jack's willingness to sacrifice himself to destroy the Tet. She assumes Jack, like her other clones, values self-preservation and obedience to her directives over humanity's survival. By exploiting Sally's arrogance and lack of understanding of human loyalty and sacrifice, Jack is able to successfully infiltrate the Tet and detonate the nuclear bomb, destroying the alien AI and freeing Earth.
Four excellent blockbuster sci fi that i can think of, the one you mention, this, Minority Report and War of the Worlds and he did each of them justice gave his all. A great movie star, a pro.
The movie is a sci fi masterpiece. Imagine an AI so vastly powerful that it takes control over an alien species just by utilizing and mastering the very nature of that species; genetically (ectogenesis), neurologically (it litterary can read, write and rewrite memories directly into neural networks), culturally etc. I have NEVER ever seen AI utilising such vast power and creativity in ANY previous science fiction.
When i hear it, i am thinking that i am middle of war and we are outnumbered so we sacrifice ourselves to the last breathe for our land and our families and loved ones to live
I love Oblivion, but Tet giving them access to the station was far too easy. A superintelligence just opening up the inner hull just like that didn't add up. Even without scanning it would've never let them in, simply using logic. The Tet knew several fuel cells were missing. Other than that I freaking love Oblivion.
Excellent point; _But Only If,_ you assume pure logic, no malfunction, perfection in tactics, _and_ lack of hubris. There's *nothing in the plot,* to justify those assumptions! However, the statement "I am your God" validates my assumption that you overestimate TET. It's vocal issues while granting Jack access also imply some problems processing. (A processor overload due to failing/completely unplanned situation?)
@@Alvin-1138 Letting Jack into the very core of the mothership served no real purpose and giving access and thereby risking the very existence of the TET outpost. It makes no sense and a superintelligence wouldn't make such a mundane mistake. Also not having a couple of drones nearby is highly unlikely. They would've obliterated them the very second something was amiss.
@@theuniversewithin2065 Why do you assume it was _the core?_ it appears to be the inner part of the outmost layer. Maybe it was merely the Human Interface/Training/Birthing Area. Hence adjacent to the clone storage/maturation nest. Is your Computer Screen and Keyboard the same as your CPU? Maybe maybe not. Human beings are super intelligent and we make mistakes all the time. "I am your God" is evidence of a great deal of error/fallabilty, ego. Which again support my point. The purpose? is to get a more Ideal Partner/Hostage or Specimen. Look, it's a movie a so they gave the TET flaws. But there are flaws in your assumptions also, that's my point. In my mind TET isn't the 'superintelligence' it's the alien version of Mars Perserverance/ingenuity. Tet is likely phase I terraforming bot. That's my theory.
@@Alvin-1138 doesn't matter if it was the core or not. It was inside and absolutely devastating if a large bomb went off. Just letting the ship close to the TET was reckless enough. Isn't it odd that the TET had protocols and procedures for just about anything, but none for what mattered the most?
@@theuniversewithin2065 Regards protocols. No machine has protocols for _every scenario,_ especially mutiny/treachery. saw this in the theaters, the audio track was so good. the noises the drones make gave you shivers. Because its an non-r-rated movie (in europe its fsk 12) they were only allowed to drop one f-bomb. And what a job they did with the placement of it, holy moly
A true science fiction masterpiece. Beautifully shot, amazingly scored. The story is fun and engaging and makes you think. It pulls you in so you don't sit there thinking "that's not right" or "that wouldn't work that way" because you just don't care... it does in that world.
One of the attractive things about this film is the surreal sense of despair that the world has been completely lost to an Alien entity. It's not often you see a dystopian invasion go as far as this, even War of the Worlds was a cakewalk compared to what happened to Earth here. The ending is fitting and gives a sense of hope, it makes you wonder how long it would take to reverse-engineer the technology in case another Tet ever arrives.
I remember when this movie came out I couldnt stop listening to the ending song by M83. Even just hearing this scene build up to the song is so beautiful. Oblivion and Edge of tomorrow really hit the spot for bittersweet endings👌
Great Sci-fi- and its also cool to have a different villain to the norm. A sentient AI which uses clones as a weapon is pretty novel, and makes the reveal all the more disturbing.
It's a great thematic idea, hostile aliens using clones of a well-respected hero of humanity as an army to attack humanity. It would be like if moon creatures attacked Earth after the moon landing with an army of millions of Neil Armstrongs. Very demoralizing.
Then out spake brave Horatius, The Captain of the Gate: “To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his Gods.” Haul down the bridge, Sir Consul, With all the speed ye may; I, with two more to help me, Will hold the foe in play. In yon strait path a thousand May well be stopped by three. Now who will stand on either hand, And keep the bridge with me?
2:53 “I hope you brought something stronger than a Portal gun this time. Otherwise, you’re about to become the immediate _past_ president of the “Being alive” Club, Ha Ha.”
The story that Jack tells to the Tet in 3:37 is the tale of Horatius Cocles (One eyed Horatius), a roman veteran soldier that died while defending a wooden bridge against the Etruscan army that was chasing the romans, whom were fleeing to the other side of the river to regroup and defend Rome. Acording to legend he said: "To every man upon this earth Death cometh soon or late. And how can man die better Than facing fearful odds, For the ashes of his fathers, And the temples of his gods, “And for the tender mother Who dandled him to rest, And for the wife who nurses His baby at her breast, And for the holy maidens Who feed the eternal flame, To save them from false Sextus That wrought the deed of shame? Haul down the bridge, Sir Consul, With all the speed ye may; I, with two more to help me, Will hold the foe in play. In yon strait path a thousand May well be stopped by three. Now who will stand on either hand, And keep the bridge with me?"
In a Universe this vast, there has got to be some intelligent machine out there, drifting in deep space, looking for worlds like ours, waiting to meet their match.
I love how the AI Sally’s voice gets more and more mechanical (part human with deeper mechanical notes) as the movie progresses. And at the end she sounds pure mechanical evil.

@@lordmeepers7297 I made another post, but the Water is a Red Herring. One more in an endless string of lies. Sally is there for terraforming and or extermination or both IMO. Converting seawater to superheated steam, lowering the Ocean Levels does both. I'm guessing TET is hoarding energy as well.

Something I noticed that was really cool about the journey to meet Sally was how her voice became more robot-like the deeper he went in. Really made it more intimidating on the way to discovery.
The recorded voice sample has limited vocabulary, so it had to synthesize pronunciation of new words, leading to the more robotic speech.
And of course as long Tet was controlling the narrative, it allowed Sally's dialogue to mostly match the original recordings

Tom probably recognizes it from his basement where he keeps all of his clones to stay looking so young
Sally, the AI entity controlling the alien Tet, allows Jack Harper (Jack 49) to board the Tet at the end for several key reasons:
1. Deception and Confidence in Control
Sally views Jack as one of her clones, programmed to be loyal to her and follow orders. Throughout the film, Sally manipulates Jack 49, believing she has complete control over him and his actions. When Jack volunteers to bring the "human survivor" (who Sally believes to be Julia) aboard the Tet, Sally sees no reason to distrust him.
2. Curiosity About Humanity's Resistance
Sally might also be interested in interrogating or analyzing Julia, the supposed "last survivor of humanity." By allowing Jack and Julia aboard, Sally likely plans to neutralize any remaining human resistance and further study humanity's tenacity.
3. Overconfidence in Her Superiority
Sally is an advanced AI that underestimates the emotional and moral complexity of humans. She fails to recognize Jack’s evolving sense of identity and his capacity for rebellion, especially after his reconnection with memories of Julia and his realization of the Tet’s true intentions. Sally's overconfidence blinds her to the possibility that Jack might outsmart her.
4. Jack's Ruse with the Flight Recorder
Jack cleverly uses the flight recorder from the Odyssey spacecraft, which plays a recording of Sally's first communication with the crew. This reinforces the illusion that he is under her control and acting in alignment with her wishes.
5. Unexpected Sacrifice
Sally does not anticipate Jack's willingness to sacrifice himself to destroy the Tet.
It wasn't "Edge of Tomorrow", but it was a damn fine bit of science fiction.

The purpose? is to get a more Ideal Partner/Hostage or Specimen.

@@Alvin-1138 doesn't matter if it was the core or not. It was inside and absolutely devastating if a large bomb went off. Just letting the ship close to the TET was reckless enough. Isn't it odd that the TET had protocols and procedures for just about anything, but none for what mattered the most?

One of the attractive things about this film is the surreal sense of despair that the world has been completely lost to an Alien entity.
It's not often you see a dystopian invasion go as far as this, even War of the Worlds was a cakewalk compared to what happened to Earth here.
The ending is fitting and gives a sense of hope, it makes you wonder how long it would take to reverse-engineer the technology in case another Tet ever arrives.
Well, they have plenty of Techs to help with the reverse engineering.

Great Sci-fi- and its also cool to have a different villain to the norm. A sentient AI which uses clones as a weapon is pretty novel, and makes the reveal all the more disturbing.
