Oblivion! It's been on my list since day 1 and since all the movies have in theatres have been delayed, it felt like a good time to do it! It gets picked apart a lot, so here's everything right with Oblivion!

My problem with the movie is it does not provide enough information to make the plot logically coherent. Why are there killer drones? They are just a McGuffin to be exploited by the writers in order to move the plot forward. This makes the reveal pointless since the reason for repairmen is to fix the drones and the reason for the drones is to create a need for the repairmen.
@@robertanderson6929 I mean there is technically a reason for the killer drones. Some humans survived and they attack the Alien Water harvesting stations, the drones are there to hunt them down and kill them. Having the repairmen be humans is the thing that doesnt make sense in my opinion. You could easily have a robot repair station set up to repair any drones, no need to throw in humans, especially since they might start asking questions as to why you are attacking other humans
@@ISometimesAgree Sure. But if I remember correctly the only time we see the Skavs attack a harvester is by using a reprogrammed drone. And the drones are pushing the plot like any McGuffin. They are able to spot heat signatures until they can't. They are able to destroy things with ease until they can't. They are able to travel anywhere that is required until they can't. It's just endemic of lazy writing. Everything is in service of the cheap reveal which unless you were not paying much attention didn't surprise many people. BTW, did they ever explain why the clone army of Tom Cruises which wiped out all the world's military and population was ineffective against the Skavs? I don't remember.
@@bishopk2994 I understand the premise of the movie. But the only harvester we see blown up is the result of weaponizing a drone. Without the drones, how do the Skavs attack the harvesters? Do they have access to aircraft, cruise missiles or long range artillery? And why do the harvesters need to be within range any weapons the Skavs might have? Wouldn't they function just as well 2000 miles off the coast? For that matter if the Tet simply wants the water then there's no reason to not simply carpet bomb the surface using kinetic strikes and make the land uninhabitable. The drones are the lazy writers device which provide the means for the Skavs to attack harvesters and push the plot along. But I can see no logical reason for them to exist otherwise.
Because it's stupid so many resources available in the universe in our solar system why even bother with earth plus Tom is a fucking Looney.
This movie and Edge of Tomorrow got me back into Tom Cruise as an actor. His personal life aside, the man is a committed professional and legit elevates everything he touches. There exists a far shittier version of this movie with an actor who would undersell this performance, but not Tom
I don't care about his personal life or his religion (scientology) or whatever. I've always thought he was a great actor and enjoy his movies. You da man Tom!
Scientology is pretty fucked and his ado cation of it is fucked in of itself, but I can't deny he really is an actor that puts his heart and soul into it. That's more than can be said for many people in his field. It's just a strange thing to have someone genuinely dedicated and talented but also swimming in such rediculous controversy. Two sides of a coin that I can't help but see both every time I look at him.
Also news is he's going to the ISS to film a new movie but really in space. Kinda get the vibes he's either going to make this an actually awesome and historic film or perhaps he'll just push his luck too far and the stunts will finally get him. Space is seriously dangerous - coolant leaks in space suits have almost drowned astronauts on space walks and while the Russians did sell seats to the ISS before, they didn't get along with the people that went.
Tom fuckin Cruise... He's 57 and he's going to space because of course he is. I don't know what to make of this madman. Still, if it wasn't for that one caveat, I would rate him among the best in his profession and as an individual.
Dude just respects audience and turns out predictable, solid movies with obvious care.

Probably one of the most sentimental sci fi movies ever made. It's actually a "eternal love" story wrapped in a sci-fi costume. Classic.

I saw this movie in a huge theater at night - all alone. Not a single person there. Kind of made the experience more powerful since the Tom's character is almost alone on Earth during parts of the movie.
You needed to be in a Theater to get the full greatness of the the Tet Tractor Beam Capture sequence, and the Jack Comes Home sequence.
You lucky SOB. I wish I could have seen this movie in theaters. I don't know where I was at the time but I assume I didn't go out to see it because all the reviews were "meh." Then I saw it once it appeared on Netflix and was like, "I will no longer rely on critics to tell me which movies I will like."

I always understood Jack repeating his exposition as another sign that he was mind wiped and programmed with that.
It's like he's so sure that this is how it is, because he hasn't found out enough about the actual world yet. It's all he knows.
Plus he just "met" Julia. That scene serves as both an introduction between their two characters as well as an indication that it's an implanted autopilot response for him
It also allows and supports Julia's poker face and answers the question "Why doesn't she she blurt something out".
Neuralyzer reference, anyone?
I found the first time as him saying it as someone who knows something is off, but he doesn't want to rock the boat too much. Then the second time was more like a guy who is reciting the company line, simply because his worldview is threatened by Julia's arrival. And even though he doesn't have the answers to his own questions - and the fact that there's a mysterious woman now sitting at his table - him speaking the words again is both a direct way to remind the audience, but also an attempt at Jack trying to speak it into existence, as truth. He likes his life, and while he knows it's incomplete or missing something, he also doesn't want to risk losing what he's got: days flying around, days lounging at the cabin, etc...
I don't think it was him just shifting to a unconscious default mode at all. I don't think it's brainwashing/programming related or anything. I saw it as more of a guy trying to convince himself of the lie he's been told while feeling deep down that he knows it's a lie, and facing the proof that it might be a lie simply by seeing Julia - another human, right there in front of him. I think this is why his delivery has more authority in tone, compared to the previous delivery, which was more casual/journal entry (to whom, who knows).
One of the things I noticed while watching this film was that in the beginning Jack's suit is pure white, but as he starts to doubt/question everything his suit starts to get dirtier until the end of the film, where his suit is so dirty that it's dark grey, almost black. It could be completely coincidental but I like to think that it's a metaphor for Jack regaining his *true* humanity. Notice how the humans that are still alive are wearing mostly black too.
I noticed that too. It also showed his complete dependence on Tet for everything including hygiene and supplies.
Suit was 'bulletproof' yet not scotchgarded 🙂
It's possible that Tet treated the Jack and Vika clones as crap and just replaced both of them whenever there was even minor problems. Broken leg? New replacement. Resupply of new suits was probably last on a long list of supply missions to everything else.
Like Luke Skywalker in the original trilogies, which brings up an interesting question, hmm...

White for teenage innocence
Grey for maturing adult
Black for becoming the master and accepting the burdens that go with it.
Or in Jacks case:
White for ignorance and innocence
Grey black for realizing the truth and resolving the situation.
You can be sure this was done on purpose. Nothing is coincidental with Joseph Kosinski, considering the attention to details he makes in every movie.
I remember when i saw it, i was blown away how the music really lifted it to insane heights..
Similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, the music brought a dimension that made it as good as it was in a similar way

Thanks for pointing out Vika's own "unrequited love" side story and the idea that she was probably wrestling with her own phantom memories. I hadn't thought of it but it makes sense.
When you find out their "Love" photo is _just a dumb little work moment,_ your heart *breaks* a little for her.

It did. Even though that feels kind of silly.
I'm guessing the pattern recognition for the love of your life and the set of emotion hormones to release gets embedded deeply in the basic object recognition needed to function (like recognizing incoming gunfire and dodging it). So replacing the higher level knowledge of recent history, like the Tet did, would leave behind the fundamental reaction to his/her face, yet not restore the associated factual memories. Hence why his copilot still loves him and he gets very protective seeing Julia's face and nameplate, without knowing who she actually is, until he finds the recorded backstory and matches it to his hormonal reaction as confirmation.

Automatic like: you enjoyed M83. "Oblivion" is suuuuuch a beautiful song.
I listened to that song every night as I lost my home. I have an unhealthy emotional connection to it.
Had the ending theme stuck in my head for WEEKS after I first watched this.
Love that song to death. They did an amazing live performance of the song with Susanne on Jimmy Kimmel's show back in the day.
I also loved their album hurry up we're dreaming. Outro is an amazing song and I am addicted to them.
People think I'm weird for getting so attached to movie soundtracks sometimes. I think it's weird when people don't lol.
Like, I can pick 111 Archer Ave out anytime I hear it lol (original score for The Royal Tenenbaums).
Same with certain tv shows. Like House's Head/Wilson's Heart (a 2 part ep from House MD if anyone was unaware) made me love re: Stacks, Passing Afternoon and a few others. But those two particularly always make me get all teary bc I associate them so strongly with the heartbreaking episode they were used in.
Anyone who doesn't associate a strong emotion with certain movie and tv music at least sometimes is really missing out.

Haha... I LOL'd when I saw that shot and heard the narration as well. I let it slide because the hat was one of the things Jack found in his travels and kept as a keepsake from a bygone era. Everything else was Tet built and branded.
Drone No. 166 is clearly not a Yankees fan, which makes it somewhat endearing. For a lifeless murder bot.
The Hat is not _"equipment,"_ so... Yoir comment just made something ligjt up forme after all these years.
Jack is _literally a "Scav," himself._ In Practice, not name.

fantastic, I love the post-apocolypic meets futuristic visual style,
and the soundtrack is amazing. Also Tom Cruise.
I especially like how it was filmed during the DAY! You could actually SEE what was going on! Too many movies are filmed so dark these days you can't even tell what's happening.

Many of the so-called Plot Holes, were actually Sally's *lies* creating holes in _her character's BS story,_ not the actual movie. I think it's popular also to pile on T.C. because of the Scientology.

It seems to me that people that say things like that are, usually, the same people that say those same things about movies that really are.
Pretty sure I'll be stabbed by an English teacher for the structure of that sentence, but hey, me just want to say me like show. Very smart show. Good sound things too.
One thing I love about this movie is that the aircraft has accurate controls and mechanisms. In the beginning you see a checklist, during flights the engines change angles in correct methods.

Good eye! In the special features, they touch on how Tom Cruise is an actual pilot and had a lot of input on the design and implementation of the controls and the flying sequences.
I'm Still anticipating "hoping" to hear that "McDonnell Douglas" or Competitors are in the Final "Successful" testing stages. And with the NWO games "Well In Play" How many "Bit Coins" will this Lovely toy cost to fly? - Peace
Ya that craft was really nice piece of engineering, like how the guns turn around to fire at the pursuers.

I helped conceptualize that sequence with Joe Kosinski. He is adamant about keeping thing functionally real, which is a rarity for modern directors. It's why Sci Fi and movies like Top Gun are perfect for his style.
I like how Jack’s dreams (memory) of him and Julia are faded, worn, and not fully together, then once Julia tells him who she is we see the entire memory in color like he can finally see clearly.
It is brilliant directing to be sure!!! Love it!
Along with 'Edge of Tomorrow', this is one of my favourite recent-ish sci-fi movies. I'm not a big fan of Cruise, but he played these parts pretty well.

Not many people have mentioned it but as a cosplayer, I really love the props and costumes in the movie. They don't look overly futuristic. I love how I can see stitches and textures of the fabric so up close. some of parts scavs wear do actually exist in real life as well.
Glad you mentioned it - the prop department for this film nailed it perfectly. So much was done so good in this film.
The DESIGN OF THIS MOVIE. Absolutely fantastic but also functional and reasonable and legitimate.
When Jack says to Sally “I want Julia to live, I want my species to survive, this is the only way” ... he isn’t lying, he is 100% truthful. Him going into the Tet, with the Bomb and blowing it up accomplishes all those things.
Watch Tom’s face when he says it, it’s utter conviction and hence Sally reads him as being truthful

I think this is a very underrated sci-fi movie, even if the story that eventually transpires is never as interesting as the look of the movie.

The only thing I remember about this movie was that line and Morgan Freeman’s Morpheus cosplay. Not to say he looked bad, he just looked like a cyberpunk grandpa.

Excellent summary of one of my favorite SciFi movies, spoiler warnings. Oblivion does indeed get better with each rewatch, vastly underrated.
underated - not on accident
It's nice to watch a video that is promoting "all the things great" instead of criticizing all the faults. That's refreshing. As Renoir said, “There are quite enough unpleasant things in life without the need to manufacture more.”
Yes, I think all reviews should only be written by people who turned out to enjoy the movie, so we can catch on to their enthusiasm. Only that's never going to happen in newspapers/etc because reviewers have to earn a living, so we have to read about how much they hated it instead. I liked this movie because it has a very pure aesthetic. Not everything is physically realistic or even totally logical in storytelling terms but it's all beautiful so you can forgive an awful lot just for the aethetic experience.

@@uazuazu the thing about only positive reviews on anything is that, somethings are actually bad. regardless of taste, some times there are products that are just terrible and to say "this thing is good" is misleading and honestly morally wrong when the thing costs money to access.

@@isitchicken Exactly. I enjoyed it too. It's too bad our movie industry can't just make a series of movies and see what happens. There would have been a lot of movies, some good, some bad. Blade runner , Tron and so many other movies would have series by now that would be so good
@@wmmseo mummy was a flop for good reasons though, none of which really have much to do with Tom Cruise. They tried really hard to build an MCU clone franchise and sank hard.
Tom has done more than well , I cannot envy someone who delivers in a woke environment, I want entertainment, not a social experiment or politics and he’s mostly hated for making films with f u money , which every artist should enjoy
I'm right there with you, I freaking love this movie and how this wasn't a super popular world wide phenomenon baffles my mind.
People are cynical these days, and other people enjoy tearing things apart for the heck of it
@lagman11 I believe the film was poorly received by some (rejected really) because the issues it brings up are too close to home. The film is profound on several levels and explores a real life scenario of "belonging to someone else when the right one comes along" or in Jack's case, the right one returns into his life. Unlike Jack, who has memory fragments, we suffer from a sense of something missing but often we have no idea that something is missing and instead a feeling that something is just "not right". Any time we make a decision to compromise at a fork in the road (for whatever reasons that drive us) we are creating a possible void of unfulfilled happiness, potential. My guess is that critics, who's entire job in life is to push their reactions to films upon the population, is empty in many ways and they know it deep down. They are usually wrong from my perspective and perhaps in their twisted self-value feel they've done their job because it push viewers to go see a film in spite of them. By I digress. My sense is that most negative critics lack the depth to appreciate the film and instead slammed it because the film made them feel uncomfortable in their own skin.
Definitely one of Tom's Most underrated movies.

@@ComedyBros5 This isn't the most fair criticism but the movie just felt too predictable. I love the design and good use of CGI. But the movie was quite bland. Even the colors being quite monotonesque made the movie boring to watch. Personally this felt like a well acted video game movie( kinda like the new tomb raider)
@@Mexicanhanu maybe I didnt notice it then cause I didnt predict the ending at all the first time I watched it and I'm a huge movie person so it isn't that predictable and I enjoyed the monotone colours and believe it was a decision more than just an accident
@@squiggles7833 that's why I didn't think it was a fair criticism. The plot predictability is such a subjective criticism. However personally once I saw the lid close on Morgan Freeman, the rest of the movie just told itself.
As for the colors, I do like seeing monotone colors as the simple design reflects the tet's personality, but I feel like they could have achieve the same result in black and white.

I feel bad for Vika. She was so lonely she gave up everything to have the life she new she never would have had otherwise. It’s messed up but still pretty sad.
I love this movie but what really sold it for me was the score (it's incredible!!) and the colour scheme as weird as that sounds but some movies everything is just so bright and the washed out tones gradually becoming more vibrant is just perfection

You forgot to win the fact that when Vica tells Sally her and Jack aren't an effective team. The reason that they're so different is reflected in their costumes. Jack's costume is white and so is Vica's but his is all dirty from being down on the surface and he's actually experienced the world hence he has been changed by it while her outfit is also white but it is spotless. This then leads to the awesome line of "there's things you should know," "I don't want to know!"
15:29 Man, I remember watching this in the cinema and the mental overload of the plot twist. Then those vocals rolled over me as the credits scrolled. I was transfixed.

I always thought the reason Jack seems to repeat the opening text about his mission verbatum is because that is how he is programmed to answer. The Tet does not want the clone to forget its prime directive. Much like in (the much worse movie) Men In Black International, when Chris Hemsworth is asked what happened on top of the Eiffel tower he always repeats the same statement word for word because it was what his brain was reprogrammed to think happened. So i don't think it's lazy script writing, more the film trying to tip off the audience that somethings wrong subtly.
Agreed. I think the fact these are clones programmed to perform a task seems to get missed by many. The movie's protagonist is just the one that broke.
I took it to be him playing it safe and neutral, especially since Vicka was already on edge over the whole situation and they need to be effective team. He probably didn't want to give any indication to Vicka that Julia was familiar to him, so he was trying to treat Julia like he would any other stranger--he was already pushing Vicka's limits by bringing her there so he didn't want to rock the boat further. I saw it like when a big corporation issues a standard generic response to a complaint or something ("We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration").
It was how I figured out the twist in agents of shield about Tahiti (it’s a magical place). it is a very common, subtle hint of programming or brain washing. And it is common because it works, it is just odd enough to notice but not in your face enough to instantly give it away.
Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physical or magical.
I think what would've ingrained it better is if he monotoned it or repeated it multiple times but never varied in the way he said it. Contextually, nothing is wrong, but we can tell subtly something is off
I love this film to pieces. One of my favourite things was seeing it in cinemas the the oppressively loud drone noises made it SO much scarier... really driving home the hostility of the drones even while you thought they were the good guys
This 100%. It was the first movie I told people had to be seen in theaters the first time you watch it. Night and Day difference for those drones.
You can see "undertone" influences from Soderbergh's Solaris too in a lot of recent good scify movies, like Blade Runner 2049 and Spielberg's AI

It's a proper high-concept art-house sci-fi flick and it's just a gem of a little movie. Gimme more like this, Hollywood.

5:28 - Another serious Win here is the reference to Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities, which foreshadows the ending of the film. In the book (spoilers), the protagonist ends up sacrificing himself to save a man who looks like him and loves the same woman he loves. Pretty neat.
To me, this is one of Tom Cruises best movies. Its beautifully crafted and designed. The music is just perfect. It binds the story and the characters in this movie perfectly. The story itself is just beyond what meets the eye. The search for his humanity is deeper than most movies. Trying to find his place in the world he calls home, yet nothing is really the same. Home is more then a place in the clouds. It connects us to our past, our present and future. I enjoy watching it. It's just one of the movies that will mean more to some then to others. Home, love and the road less traveled is the path we look for to get us there.

She was selfish, willfully ignorant, manipulative, and then ultimately betrayed Jack.
Sure, she's a tragic character, but she's also a weak person, so it's hard to feel a lot of empathy for her.

Unpopular opinion...I put Interstellar waaaay down the list of good sci-fi. Like Gravity, in its second half it gets waaay up its own you-know-what philosophically and emotionally. That’s part of any good sci-fi, sure, but it just worked it in so inelegantly...too heavy-handed, too saccharine.

You missed the part of how every time Tom cruise pushey a button or pulls the lever or spins it around, that's real because they actually built the bubbleship, it didn't fly or anything but stuff rotated buttons made noises, I think you should watch that process of building the bubbleship you'll find out something interesting as well

This movie.....is one of the best movies I’ve seen, definitely in my top 10 maybe top 5....the idea of it......the story......the music (M83), the underlying theme that true love and the power of humanity to prevail. Beautiful, if you don’t lie it, you’re maybe into films that don’t want you to think or don’t care. I loved it, if you didn’t, give it another go......alone and with a few whiskeys. 😉
after watching this, I went and re-watched the movie. Regardless of my feelings about Tom Cruise the person, I can't help but enjoy a lot of his movies, this one is no exception. Good story, good effects, and well acted. Thanks for making my night.

How the hell did you read my mind? Except, I love this movie. The beauty, the sadness, the song, the Oasis (I wanna live there), all made me fall in love with the movie. And most movies before this just presented Olga Kurylenko as sexy or hot, but this movie shows how beautiful she truly is & pretty good at acting too.
There are so many things wrong with this film (see the cinema sins) that I shouldn't like it so much, but I do. Go figure.

Something else I thought interesting, and its probably not an original thought in the slightest, but both Jack and Vika mention that they only have two weeks left in their rotation, despite it later being suggested through visuals of the hydro-rigs that it could take quite a bit longer than that before the planet's oceans are completely consumed. Calling it a rotation implies it's an ongoing process that either began five years ago or was already ongoing and is to be taken over by another team afterward, but there's no mention of being replaced by anyone. Vika does say in the scene where Jack is watering his plant atop a mountain that once they are gone, the Scavs will only have "dust and radiation" but that sort of flies in the face of it being a "rotation". Even in that same shot, it establishes that there's a lot of water left despite the heavy industrial rate the hydro-rugs appear to be consuming it. Moreover, one gets blown up just a few hours later, which would undoubtedly slow the process significantly.
Then there's the fact that there's Tech 52 and his associated Vika in a relatively nearby location. Forgetting that this likely indicates there are techs 50 and 51 elsewhere across the fake "radiation zone" navigational barriers, it could be implying there are more hydro-rigs in their zones that they independently cover. I think its more likely there are simply more "teams" inserted by the Tet as needed as the hydro-rigs progress across the globe, following the water supply as it shrinks.
All this being said, I am guessing that, in concert with being provided a female companion as a stabilizing influence, Jack clones beginning to increasingly question their reality is likely also why there's a time limit on their "mission" before they "depart for Titan" even though the job might not be complete. I would imagine the Tet had learned either during past conquests of other species/planets or through previous iterations of Jack Harper that there was only so long they could allow fully independent clones to run around before they would go completely rogue in one way or another and would need to be euthanized regularly to prevent it.
Granted, this movie is not all *that* deep so I'm probably overthinking it.
People mentioning the Yankee's hat despite the "Tet only" statement in the video: obviously scavenged and kept out of sight. He only wears the hat when he's away from the tower. The only thing Vika ever sees that he scavenged from below is the plant.
I think you're exactly right. There absolutely is a rotation to assure that the clones are replaced before the go rogue. Fact that this pair is two weeks away is also why this Jack Harper was susceptible to being influenced and 'remembering'.
They might even expect to get a period of R&R on Tet & then a Mandatory Memory Wipe?

@@Alvan81 The R&R idea would work, absolutely, but...I keep thinking it's said that they're definitely short timers for heading to Titan. I'd have to go back and sift through the dialogue, but I always got the distinct idea Vika sure seems to think they're *done* in two weeks.
I think it's conveyed that that the water is being used as a fusion power source...I would imagine via the separation of the hydrogen and oxygen atoms, especially if the Tet has some kind of ultra-efficient electrolysis method. I suppose that would make every molecule essentially count.

Loved this breakdown. Even had a few things I hadn't thought of myself, and i'm a big fan of the movie.
One thing I'd add is that the Jack we follow is nearing the end of his "mission" - weeks away, in fact. It was always his fate to return to the Tet to die. Most likely, the Tet has locked in that short mission time to ensure some level of control over the clones and their ability to figure out the truth and/or rebel over time as they continue to question everything about their missions. If not for the intervention of the other humans, that team would have flown to the Tet and been murdered only to be replaced by a new team of clones in a few weeks time. It's a bit poetic that THIS time, Jack knowingly returns to die & take the Tet with him.
Very similar to the plot of "Moon" (2009). These clones are not meant to live long for several of the reasons you mentioned.

Oblivion is one of those movies that I hadn't heard of before watching it. So I had no preconceived ideas about it. And I loved it. Particularly the music. But, I always wonder what happened to all the other Vicas and Jacks on Earth. Julia is going to be a very busy girl.
I’ve watched this movie so many times recently. Really love his “secret” home he built and how he’s collected all these things he’s found and brought it back there. Really great acting and story. I really really enjoyed this movie! Also in the scene where “jack” is playing basketball he’s pretty bad. But thats because He only goes back to that “oasis” home every once in awhile for a short amount of time so obviously he wouldn’t be that good if decent at all.

The way you analysed Vika's dream life being played is so, so excellent! I was honestly so sad when Vika died and Jack moves on almost instantly but you know that he cares about Vika when he asks her to leave the house with him and Julia. But coming back to your analysis, man movie review is a serious job. Diving deep into the story and picking up these small things that build a character in a massive way is not something that comes naturally to every person who watches a movie. But the fact that these small details still exist in the movies shows that the story-writers, directors and actors really care about what they do and present a masterpiece for the audience. Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion are the two movies I blind-watched because of Tom Cruise and I didn't expect much from them but honestly, I love them both!
Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion - are two damn good films. Hat off to Tom for both - by far his best two films.
That bit with running around your dreams is exactly me. So often I have those dreams and even in dream feel like cheating and like a dirtbag and then I wake up and am majorly relieved.
The music was on point in this film. And when the truth came out with the Morgan Freeman sceen is my fav moment in the film; the whole time chsnges.

I really liked this film and honestly wished they’d created novelized prequels or did a prequel series about the Tet arriving and the perspective of Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman) or Sergeant Sykes (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) as they lived through the invasion and their attempts to get the “Repairmen Jack” to open their/his mind(s).

This felt to me as if someone had gone back in time to the 80s and given Michael Mann two hundred million dollars to make a sci-fi film...despite the quality of the effects, it still has that 80s vibe, you know, before everything else did.

Yeah it had that 80's soul in it kinda something like bittersweet and nostalgic but there is nothing nostalgic for us but for jack there is some.

One of my favorites. Contained angst, longing, recognition, eerieness, defiance of authority, multi-self, and self-sacrifice in addition to future-tech and action. Hard to beat.
Oblivion is a guilty pleasure for me. Even with its flaws, I am always enrapt by every aspect of it.

I loved Oblivion when I first saw it, and ordered the soundtrack in the car on the way home. I bought the blu-ray when it came out, but for some reason didn't open it until a couple months ago. Re-watching it I suddenly remembered why if loved it so much in the first place, and the extras on the disc were great too. This is an original and very underrated movie!
Still one of the best looking sci-fie movies out there.

You should do Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”. It’s very underrated. Classic Guy Ritchie style and great performance by Charlie Hunnam. Amazing score and soundtrack as well. Somehow bombed at the box office but definitely deserves as much praise as “The Gentleman”

Oblivion was one of those movies that wasn't even on my radar when I happened upon it, watched it, and loved it. Loved the soundtrack too. But, what happened with all the other Jacks and Vikas on Earth? Did all those Jacks become selfaware and love Julia? Did Julia love all the clone Jacks. She could be a very busy girl.
While kind of a bummer, all of them probably just died, if they were in the house or the hovercraft when they turned off they would have either crashed or eventually starved to death as there doesn’t seem to be a way down.

She didn't like it too much but it will always hold a special place in my heart
Also the undertone of the husband cheating on his wife with his crew mate/co worker but it is all a alien plot keeping the husband form the wife and the cheating was mind control/memory wipe. That the husband and wife are to true love that even aliens can not stop for long.
I'm so glad that you liked this movie, when I saw it I really liked it, the soundtrack the setting, and even the plot, it was a bit cliche but enjoyable, there is the idea that if something is cliche in not gonna be good, but that happens only when they copy paste something but without the soul, and when I did go online to see the reviews I was so disappointed that it wasn't as appreciated as I thought.
I freaking love this movie. I own the soundtrack. That scene with Vika in the pool and "Starwaves" playing is like audio visual crack. I've watched this movie probably 15 times and I love it even more every time. Kosinsky is a genius (schooled to be an architect and it shows in his designs). I wish he'd go back to sci-fi. I honestly believe the reason many people don't get this film is simply that... they don't get it.
It's not very uplifting, is I think part of the issue.
At the end of the Day, the good guy died, and Sally has fucked up the Earth & Moon and destroyed civilization.
And the clone storage shot was shattering if you think about it. Jack had to kill 'Thousands of" himself to win.

"Show and don't tell" used to be the rule for good filmmaking, but peoples attention spans are literally shortening every year. It's sad. My 9 year old son just watched this with me and he followed it fine.
@@gamiensrule These days most people get bored if there isn't a fight/chase scene, explosion, or jump scare every five or ten minutes, if a movie isn't some combination of a near continuous adrenaline ride and grand, epic spectacle, audiences simply tune out. I saw Oblivion in the theater with a friend and I remember at least twice during the movie she commented that she thought it was boring, which was annoying since I really enjoyed it.
In a world where you may not have any support it makes sense to include a second form of transport to survive a downed craft ... When people see smaller boats on a big boat they don't complain .... The motorcycle stays final conclusion ... Bolivian is an amazing movie, part of Tom's come back ... He's amazing to watch and I've been a fan my entire life ....
For some reason I missed this when it came out. Probably because my significant other didn't think we were an effective team and I was in court explaining why. But any way just discovered this and thought it was great. Tom has some really good movies, always enjoy his films.
This was a fun movie. It’s such a visually beautiful movie. I don’t like a few things about it, but I liked it. Well-made video, my fellow movie watcher.
If you are someone that appreciates set design, acting, sound design, or even a great premise, then there's plenty to love about Oblivion. The only thing that's bad about it is the execution of the plot, a lack of faith in the audience to notice things, etc etc.
The biggest thing is the opening voiceover/narration. You don't need it. Just the flash of his dreams in NYC, Julia, and then Tom and Vika waking up, with M83's score in the background.
There are of course, a few other things that need to be addressed but overall, just... leaving the scenes to speak for themselves without any commentary or narration would've been so much better. The fact that they keep hammering things over and over and over again that something is wrong just... gah, it pissed me off with a passion lol.
The funniest thing too is that I've wanted this movie to be done for a long time, and I'm so glad that he's done it. :D

@@kjj26k The only one that wasn't spoiled was the clone twist. That, I actually did not predict. Temples of Our Gods and the moment traveling through the Tet with all of the clones floating in suspension was quite an unreal moment. And following that with Fearful Odds and everything after that is well executed too.
This was the movie that introduced me to M83, and helped me fall in love with M83. We need more M83 in movies.

This video made me remember that I saw this movie when it came out. I listened to the soundtrack for weeks and then decided to rewatch it in October of 2020. It's now one of my favourite movies and I still listen to the soundtrack almost daily when writing my own stories. Thanks for making this video and helping me discover yet another one of M83's genius works through the music!

One of my friends was a VFX artist on this movie. He made the CG model of the bubble ship
I've been a big Tom Cruise fan since I saw his movie debut in 1981 movie Taps, watched most of the films he starred in. I saw Oblivion at a theater in the Philippines at its release, got a motorbike about two weeks later. Some may find this hard to believe, but I'd rank Oblivion as one of my favorite sci-fi movies, along with Vanilla Sky.
Tom is the leader of a cult that actively harms people who leave it and people within it. I don't know if he is aware of all the bad shit his cult does or is involved in. He could be a genuinely good person. But he is still the leader/figure head for it. And by supporting him you support the cult and everything it does. I like him too as an actor. He is great at his craft. But just cant support the terrible shit scientology does.

I saw this in the movies. Mostly forgot about the plot, but the visuals were unforgettable. Great sets and a clear distinction of the colors between sky and earth.
