One of the greatest battle scenes in Science Fiction Cinema, bar none. Not only do we have excellent alien tech and robots and the like, we also have a man change fundamentally from a coward to a hero. He does not fight well, but that he fights *at all* is a miraculous final change in his character. He does not fight well, but he gives it everything he's got for someone he was once disgusted by.

@@leemzgoogle917 I'm honestly not that excited about a sequel. I think District 9 stands better on its own. The story arc was completed. I like how the suit give us a glimpse about how advanced the prawns actually are. Yet here it gave humans a lot of grieve even though it's only piloted by a scared untrained man.
@@ebincd2362 Its theorized (I think even in the film) that the prawns have a intellectual hierarchy. Somehow the "thinking" prawns that run things died prior to the film, which is why when the humans cracked open the ship all they found were aliens who didn't seem capable of running the advanced machines. Presumably Christopher and his son belong to the higher classes of prawn.
@@ebincd2362 it's pretty heavily hinted at especially when they open the ship and the reports stated none of them fought back plus they were starving and half dead, you'd think if they were capable of using this devastating technology they'd have gone out and raided the surrounding area even just out of desperation at some point.
I remember first seeing this movie and hating and loving the MC’s response to changing into an alien. He didn’t sympathize with their plight, but rather he was disgusted he was becoming one of THEM. Incredible display of emotions and change in a character as he has to finally decide who he will be. I love that it didn’t happen overnight
Rewatching this scene made me realize three things : - The mercs, first introduced as tough professionals, are actually overgrown, overarmed and overconfident bullies being shred to pieces and goo once they found their match ; - The suit has an incredible sensitivity, both in the damage indicator and the body language, translating all the pain and exhaustion the wearer is experiencing ; - The shoulder camera is an insane way to convey emotion and tension in a scene !
To be fair, I don't think this is really something that they're trained for. Handling impoverished aliens is one thing, but fighting this is basically like walking into a giant meat grinder.
It isn't underrated. It was incredibly successful upon release and was critically acclaimed. It received FOUR Oscar nominations, one of which being Best Motion Picture, there is no higher honour than that. A film isn't underrated just because you like it.
James: The answer for district 10 is,the let the fans have it. Fan movies can be awesome and very true to the works their based on. More than once, I've been impressed with the professionalism of these works.
I just watched this film last night and I can't believe how great the CGI was. Nothing looked too cartoony. Also, this might be one of my favourite last stand moments in film. The music, the action, the editing, the turning point for Wikus' character, etc. Love it!
Does the rocket fuel not keep burning? The thrust cuts off almost as soon as he grabs it, shouldnt the rocket motor keep going or is it just enough fuel to propel it out of the barrel and send it on its way?
Sharlto Copley is such an amazing actor. With Wikus, he goes through so much complex changes throughout this entire film. Then he made us hate the amoral, psychotic Agent Kruger in Elysium to the point we cheered the character's death. I want to see what becomes of Wikus after District 9. He really had so much character development.
He was so completely unhinged as Kruger it was actually scary. Especially after watching his transformation in D9. Blomkamp is just a phenomenally good director.
Perhaps one of the "darkest" of Human / Alien stories, beautifully written, outstanding special effects, with a flawed Hero, and the social interactions between species that mirror many, many historical comparisons. There is not a happy ending, but there is hope.
"greatest CGI I have ever seen" you haven't seen many great CGI movies have you? Small time studios could do this today and even at that time, you didn't need to be a giant studio to make these effects. CGI is good, especially for the small budget they had, but the CGI is small time. The style is more grounded and less fantastic and that's why most people appreciate the CGI more, technically it's nothing out of this world.
@@flybeep1661 considering the time and the budget the movie was made yes it is one of the greatest CGI! Especially when you compare it with todays marvel crap ...
@Ronald Mutebo I got to think for its time that should go to Star Ship Troopers. The bugs hold up even today. But D9 certainly was uncanny in its CGI but more to the interaction of the CGI with real world. I think thats where this film really shines. They meshed it almost perfectly.
The scene at 4:48 where the car hit and ramped off the mech was so clean! It all just flowed so well and looked amazing! This is one of the movies that is dear to my heart, as I built a home theater PC attached to a surround sound system & 100-inch projector screen, starting in 2008. It was all digital too, so that meant the movies were very sharp, using DVI between projector & PC, as VGA would have been blurrier. I rented the movies from Blockbuster back then (Redbox later on). My parents would watch with me & District 9 was one of those movies, perhaps around 2009 or 2010. We had a great time watching on our giant home movie projector screen for the next 5 years. My dad passed away at end of 2017. So, watching these movies are a fond, but bittersweet memory.
I'm glad I came across your comment. One of the few things my mom likes to do is watch movies. So Im starting a 4k movie collection. I'm going to rip all of them and build a home theatre too. I know my mom will really enjoy watching some films with me. I will have those memories to cherish like you when my mom is no longer here. I'm sorry for your loss, life is so damn short. I wish you the best in life =)
@@zerocal76 ... Good luck with your home theater. I spent about $400 usd for the whole thing. Oh & the reason I said only 5 years was because we finally got our first big lcd flatscreen TV after that, so it kinda made my projector a little bit less relevant. The projector was still used but not as much as it was in those 5 years, which was 1-3 movies nearly every weekend for ~5 years. Have fun & remember the memories you & your mom will get from it. I would recommend you take some photos and/or home videos of you guys watching, including what's on the screen. That was something I never got to do, so it's now all just hazy memories from my brain.
My first time watching it, I didn't know what to expect. Now, years later, I find myself wanting to watch this film again (along with Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, Elysium).. Such underrated movies that convey a much deeper and complicated story than what is portrayed on the surface. Well done.

well that also happened in Avatar, but D9 wins at the script and perhaps also at the plot. ok avatar has an over the top plot and a hell of direction yet way too many cliches. D9 is at the top 10 of the genre. of course at the very top there's always aliens and t2, also cameron's. then come, perhaps, starship troopers, perhaps the abyss (also cameron's) what else...? there must be a few others... (no lucas, spielberg or bay movies that i can think of can reach that level of sophistication) I'd say 5th element but no, there's plenty of comedy there, to me a different genre. final fantasy? (terrible script) edit: please don't say elysium, that was just terrible!!! of the really bad.
From what I read the Mech suit was actually meant for Mining operations, which further propels the idea that these aliens were looking for planets to scavenge resources from. Maybe their planet was dying? Anyway, imagine their true 'War' mechs.
Exactly , the ship was a mining vessel and the mech is just a mining vehicle with some weapons strapped to it , makes you wonder how scary their war mechs are consider the amount of damage a mecha piloted by a bad Pilot (due to bad compatibility) did
Keep in mind this mech was built from scraps. Imagine someone taking a rusty pickup truck that was intended for landscaping work, slapping some armor plates on it, and mounting a MG on the back. The lightning rifles they use are also improvised industrial equipment. That's the equivalent of turning a nail gun into an actual firearm. I don't want to imagine what their actual military equipment is like if scrap like this is this deadly efficient.
That's because they live on a different planet with much more gravity than earth, just like interstellar, so 3 year to them is like 300, 000 year's for us? My Grand Grand Grand plus son might be able to see that day.
@@mikel4755 asians sure are a funny people... like making up those numbers, and inventing the notion that the aliens' planet has "much more gravity" LOL
@@michaelcohen9363 it's about relativity in space. Interstellar probably discusses this the best, and in the most realistic fashion. The alien planet (for all we know) could be light years away in a different galaxy. That planets time could flow at a much slower speed. People don't think about these kind of things, because people don't care about space.. :(

I’ve heard it’s in the works, current status though? Not even sure. I would perf it being under the dark though until it’s finished. [edit] It’s better nowadays that projects such as these are kept hidden so we won’t be so hyped up and upset when it wasn’t what we hoped for. It’s fine for them to tease us but for many big films, or ones which are on good pace [like District 9] with its audience often fail right after their predecessors. This goes for games as well and as I’m aware- a lot of these projects are super rushed now because they want to make money the very next year. When a series takes a long gap to breathe and develop, that’s a sign of successful pacing in my book and we shouldn’t pressure them into making a sequel right away. [this could be debatable obviously, as we haven’t gotten a sequel to this brilliant movie in a long time. But if it’s still a work in progress then let it be until they get it done right.]
I think this is my favourite movie of all time. I remember being completely blown away by it in theatres, going back for a 2nd watch, and now the CGI still holds up. It did so much with a crazy small budget, and told one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever.
A creepy detail to consider: the exosuit inadvertently breaking Wikus' legs due to the incompatible lower body probably accelerated his Prawn transformation. His mutating body would be able to regenerate directly into the final form.
yep, the alien fluid read his DNA as wrong and "repaired" it with Prawn DNA, thats why the arm that broke was the arm that became alien, the more the body repairs itself the more its "repaired" as a prawn

How is it underrated? It was nominated for several awards and received critical acclaim, the audiences loved it as well and it did great at the box office.
This came out when I was about a sophomore in high school. Arguably one of the best movies out there in my opinion. Especially for how low-budget it was at the time. Chappie was no slouch either. The late 2000's was a strange time for film, but it produced some of the most interesting ideas I've seen. I'm just old enough to remember there being a web site for this movie that emulated the tech layout seen in the movie. I wish that were still around.
There was a website that did that? That must have been so sick. Too bad I was only 10 at that time and didn't know how to use the internet like you did.
God this was epic. The guy with the NTW-20 getting turned into hamburger, the tough guy with the minigun being turned into wet paste, the Merc getting taken out by a pig launched his way, the truck driver getting out casually unloading his AK on the alien mech then promptly being splatered. This scene was glorious.😊
Can you imagine how effective the suit would be in the hands of a trained operator? The damage he was doing as someone untrained and running only on instinct as it were, is mind-boggling. As for a sequel, I like to think Wikus kept leaving Tania flowers, Tania continued to pine over the uncertainty of whether Wikus was still alive, and Christopher did return and rescued everyone without a major display of force against the humans. Alternatively, by the time Christopher returned the aliens had integrated into society with many choosing to remain on Earth instead of leaving with Christopher. Technology became advanced enough to return Wikus to human form and reunited with Tania. Niether ideas are sequel worthy, though.
Im cases like this, a comic or animated sequel would do just fine. To me, it's the best way to expand or give some resolution to movies like this that may never have any follow up on the big screen.
@@timothymccormick5208 Still the issue would be the insane cost/benefit radio. Each suit would be extraordinary expensive and if someone can build a bypedal mech, be assured that soon there would be personal anti mech weaponry to counter it same as it happened with our tanks. Basicaly against no geared foes will stomp same as a tank but will struggle against enemies that are using anti-mech weaponry and remember the more armor you have the less nimble you are, not counting that armor on articulations and head must be weaker to allow movement, compared to its torso's. The reason why so many died is that they were atacking what it was literally armor wise a bypedal APC with asault rifles mostly and expecting to deal any damage when they should have retreated and get anti-tank weaponry

This exo suit is immensely powerful, capable of obliterating an entire army. Yet, as we know, Wikus is just a regular human with no understanding of how this machine functions. Despite that, he handled everything in an incredibly impressive way. 8:56 🖤👌🏽 The coolest part of this scene, for me, is when Sharlto Copley steps out, and the exo suit falls perfectly into place around him at that exact moment. It's a detail that truly deserves attention.
I don’t know how good it would be given that this was essentially a sci-fi movie centered around the real-world events of apartheid in South Africa, but I would definitely love to watch a sequel to this when the Prawns come back in 3 years.
what a freakin' masterpiece this movie ... the music, the visuals, the feels, and then the absolute freakin' carnage, ... jesus it give you goosebumps every darn single time
One of the most striking images about this scene is how the the exosuit "bleeds" out of the cavity that would be its mouth towards the end. We know it's a machine, but it moves and acts like a living thing, you can't help but feel bad for it when it's finally put down.
The one thing I liked about that Exosuit, it had the ability to cluster the rounds that were shot at it and send them back to the shooters (scene with the Nigerians).
People asking for a sequel doesn't really understands how sci-fi movies work. If you keep thinking about it after it ends, it achieved its goal. It's not supposed to give you a happy ending, it's food for thought. Also, do you really want a masterpiece like this to be screwed up by DEI? Leave it as it is.

@@leemzgoogle917 Apparently he started writing it in February last year. I looked into it and he does talk about how he never felt a need for a sequel but he seemed to have come up with an idea for one. Haven't seen anything recent, but it seems its likely still in the works
@@TheCindering should have been a sequel 3 years after this making lol
@@leemzgoogle917 I'm honestly not that excited about a sequel. I think District 9 stands better on its own. The story arc was completed. Adding a bunch of extraneous details about where the aliens came from and why would inevitably be unsatisfying, the mystery and the questions left open is part of the film's appeal.
I like how the suit give us a glimpse about how advanced the prawns actually are. I like to think that in the greater galactic scene it's just a common infantry gear, just tens of millions of those slugging across the galaxy. Yet here it gave humans a lot of grieve even though it's only piloted by a scared untrained man.
Well the prawns are just basic servants/workers. The creators and the 'owners' are never seen or mentioned.
@@DutchGuyMike Is that a theory or actually part of the story though? It seems every weaponry shown in the film is specifically built for prawns
The Kardashev scale is a mf.
Rewatching this scene made me realize three things :
- The mercs, first introduced as tough professionals, are actually overgrown, overarmed and overconfident bullies being shred to pieces and goo once they found their match ;
- The suit has an incredible sensitivity, both in the damage indicator and the body language, translating all the pain and exhaustion the wearer is experiencing ;
- The shoulder camera is an insane way to convey emotion and tension in a scene !
To be fair, I don't think this is really something that they're trained for. Handling impoverished aliens is one thing, but fighting this is basically like walking into a giant meat grinder.
You can't really blame the mercs for getting shredded by a battlesuit constructed by a species that has mastered interstellar travel.
The Mercs: Why do I hear boss music?
Literally they could’ve just ran away and waited for the guy with the anti-material rifle
I mean if the mercs actually used real tactics instead of just standing around waiting to get shot the scene would have gone a lot differently.
One of the most underrated movies ever. A masterpiece.
It truly is
Very good movie for sure
I did it, I made them their own world, our ancestors, the x-men who abused creation 👽👹
It isn't underrated. It was incredibly successful upon release and was critically acclaimed. It received FOUR Oscar nominations, one of which being Best Motion Picture, there is no higher honour than that. A film isn't underrated just because you like it.
Congratulations. You're 3,628,497th person on RUclips to rate a film as "underrated".
If there's one movie that deserves a sequel, it is this. Sad how those 3 years never ended for us 😭
Sequels almost always suck. It's better to have a stand alone gem.
@@HansKlopek not always. Far not
if anything the fact that there is no sequel further drives home the ending
It would literally be the end of the human race, though humans as they are in this movie wouldn't be mourned much.

I just watched this film last night and I can't believe how great the CGI was. Nothing looked too cartoony. Also, this might be one of my favourite last stand moments in film. The music, the action, the editing, the turning point for Wikus' character, etc. Love it!
7:30 absolutely correct.
RPG-7 has a 4.5 second fuze.
Unless it hits it's target and crushes the igniter pin in the front.
i really appreciate the effort into how realistic weapons are
Very good comment.
And the loveable psychopath Murdock in the A-team...
Don't forget the lovely Chappie !
He is in the recently release second season of Russian Doll and I did not even recognize him for episodes. Great actor
He becomes maniac pilot in A-Team and innocent robot in Chappie
Imagine how effective a skilled exosuit pilot would be. He'd mop up this whole scene in 3 minutes tops.
This movie is part of my childhood 🥹. What a masterpiece. So underrated.
For those who have not watched this film - I envy you watching it for the first time. It's honestly one of the best movies ever made.
Probably the only film I've ever watched where I felt physically sick afterwords.
True
Perhaps one of the "darkest" of Human / Alien stories, beautifully written, outstanding special effects, with a flawed Hero, and the social interactions between species that mirror many, many historical comparisons. There is not a happy ending, but there is hope.
Enemy Mine
All these years later and still the best mech ever put on the big screen
Agreed!
Even avatar 2 doesn't have Mech suits this good
This movie still to this day has some of the greatest CGI I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot working in the industry!!!!...
@@flybeep1661 That must be why the academy nominated it for an Oscar in VFX, JS 😋😋!!..
@Ronald Mutebo I got to think for its time that should go to Star Ship Troopers. The bugs hold up even today. But D9 certainly was uncanny in its CGI but more to the interaction of the CGI with real world.
I think thats where this film really shines. They meshed it almost perfectly.
@Ronald Mutebo Several of the pre infinity war movies CGI was horrible. Like I cant sit through Black Panther the CGI is so bad.
The scene at 4:48 where the car hit and ramped off the mech was so clean! It all just flowed so well and looked amazing! It looks like they flipped the truck practically and I guess just composited the mech in where the ramp was. They also stopped the music when the car was in the air for an extra layer of added wonder! Flawless work people!
Still gets goosebumps over this scene. Such a rollercoaster of emotions. This is what final fights should feel like. Surprises, humor, anger. Great!
This scene... is flawless. Also, totally forgot about the flying pig! (5:35)
Same here... I remember watching the movie, but I don't remember him gravity-gunning a pig. Hilarious touch in the middle of a dead-serious action scene. :)
I've watched this movie several times over the years. I cant believe I never noticed the pig!
Half life 2 gravity gun kill :) with a piggie :)
Don't forget the washing machine kill as well :)
The pig really was one of the most unexpected and amazing moments I’ve ever seen in film. I’ve seldom been so happy. It was absurd.
3:43 the fact that blood hit's the camera is a weird psychological thing because it's like the cameraman (you) are right there in the action. A single shot like that can make the audience feel 'in the action'
This whole scene is so wonderfully crafted for a movie that came out in 2009
Well, many scenes are meant to be pseudo-live footage. That's one of them.
Such a good movie. That exosuit was the coolest. The actor playing Wikus was perfect, constantly in a state bewilderment.
One of the greatest setups for a sequel in cinematic history. I am forever waiting for a District 10
We need neil blomkamp to make a second part. Seriously one of the best scifi movies ive ever seen
Agreed...we did get Elysium and Chappie! (same universe and timeline).
That was something I never got to do, so it's now all just hazy memories from my brain.
i also set up one of these back then!

The escalation of sentimental and realistic emotion drove the adrenaline to an epic movie.
absolutely. Masterful editing and pacing of that fight scene with *tremendous* stakes.
My first time watching it, I didn't know what to expect. Now, years later, I find myself wanting to watch this film again (along with Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, Elysium).. Such underrated movies that convey a much deeper and complicated story than what is portrayed on the surface. Well done.
Right --- the CGI/tech is used to *aid* the storytelling, it isn't the storytelling itself.

of course at the very top there's always aliens and t2, also cameron's.
then come, perhaps,
starship troopers,
perhaps the abyss (also cameron's)

please don't say elysium, that was just terrible!!! of the really bad.
I always thought it was an excellent touch that the alien tractor beam also picked up a little gravel with the shuttle.
Yes I noticed that and agree
From what I read the Mech suit was actually meant for Mining operations, which further propels the idea that these aliens were looking for planets to scavenge resources from. Maybe their planet was dying? Anyway, imagine their true 'War' mechs.
Exactly , the ship was a mining vessel and the mech is just a mining vehicle with some weapons strapped to it , makes you wonder how scary their war mechs are consider the amount of damage a mecha piloted by a bad Pilot (due to bad compatibility) did
Wait, isn't that the movie theory behind Battleship ?
Keep in mind this mech was built from scraps. Imagine someone taking a rusty pickup truck that was intended for landscaping work, slapping some armor plates on it, and mounting a MG on the back. The lightning rifles they use are also improvised industrial equipment. That's the equivalent of turning a nail gun into an actual firearm.
I don't want to imagine what their actual military equipment is like if scrap like this is this deadly efficient.

@@michaelcohen9363 it's about relativity in space. Interstellar probably discusses this the best, and in the most realistic fashion. The alien planet (for all we know) could be light years away in a different galaxy. That planets time could flow at a much slower speed. So when you are on that planet, maybe a few minutes go by here and there- nothing new. But if you instantly teleported to Earth after those said minutes; months, years, could of flyed by on Earth. It’s better nowadays that projects such as these are kept hidden so we won’t be so hyped up and upset when it wasn’t what we hoped for.

Chappie was pretty garbage compared to District 9.

This, right here, is exactly why the concept of "BattleTech" would be a MASSIVE boost in nearly every aspect of combat, for the military.
This mech would wreak a whole tank division by itself in urban combat
@@thanhvinhnguyento7069 i agree i think this one is just a light mech
compare to human tech this is the alien armored car but with more fire power
@@timothymccormick5208 Still the issue would be the insane cost/benefit radio. Each suit would be extraordinary expensive and if someone can build a bypedal mech, be assured that soon there would be personal anti mech weaponry to counter it same as it happened with our tanks.
Basicaly against no geared foes will stomp same as a tank but will struggle against enemies that are using anti-mech weaponry and remember the more armor you have the less nimble you are, not counting that armor on articulations and head must be weaker to allow movement, compared to its torso's.
