- This film is based on the manga "All you need is kill". And manga is much more... Darker tbh. And I like both.

“Don’t shoot him again” - such a funny throwaway line.
"Yet."
Given that he can kill himself and restart, I take it he can do some days where he just chills and takes a break lol
@@mikkel123sej He awakens on the military base and is immediately ordered around. He gets no break
It's not throwaway. It's the reason he opens the safe this time. Because he fears for his life, not because he believes them.
I love being like #1,000
The mimic horde has to be one of the most dominant and scary alien races ever designed. They reset the day until victory is achieved. Basically unbeatable.
Except this minor bug, Id say it's an urgent prio on this bug.
This probably happened already in the real world and they have all of us plugged into the matrix.
Definately one of the scariest aliens races in all the movies I watched. The scariest in my opinion are the aliens in jupiter ascending. The aliens use the earth and humans as a farm and cattle type situation for the abrassax. 100 human beings makes one vile of abrassax. And most humans dont know they are a slave race and can be ‘harvested’ at any given moment.
By default this is how computer games are. You die, reload the save and use the knowledge to do better next time.
But what if the AI could do this? It wouldn't be a complete reversal as you would remember too, but wouldn't that be a scary enemy to play against? You'd have to win in as few attempts as possible so that it wouldn't be able to learn too much about you.
Then again, with that kind of AI it would be opening Pandora's Box. We're better off not even making that kind of AI.
Except that happening is a mistake, not intentional on the aliens' part. They see in the future, so they always win, that's all. They don't reset shit
I love the clear exasperation in Cruise’s voice when he tells Rita not to shoot the general. He’s desperate, frustrated, and tired. Who knows how many times he’s lived these events.
He might be a creepy weirdo in real life, but he can act. This could have been an unwatchable mess without the prime ingredients it has.
Around 300 resets, groundhog day is supposed to be 33 years wortf of resetting days lol
@@xyaeiounn what weirdo?
@@flisko123 scientology

@ WHAT?!?!? That's ... I'm not even sure whether that's worse or better than Bill Murray's Ground-Hog-Day resets :O

thanks for tip I never seen that for whatever reason
It’s crazy how he’s so confident about everything when he walks in the room and you get to a point in the conversation where you can tell he he’s t gotten as far as he has and starts to get a little frustrated
Suuuuuuuuper late, but yea especially at the part where he tells her not to shoot him. You can see how he is stuck between her being impatient and the general being stubborn. He’s probably had to deal with that situation 100s of times at least and it’s hard to plan a route in the conversation due to how quickly they both could devolve
@@bagelmaster2498 her just shooting him out of frustration and seeming to open up a simple solution creates the problem of him having to know the safe code, which he probably hadn't picked up by the or couldn't. so it's understandably frustrating for her to shoot the general.

Cept this is more battle oriented. Making it more like a video game with objectives that you have to complete while groundhog day was just him trying to figure out what the hell is going on

Most underrated film of the decade. Definitely one of my favorite action films. Cruise is knockout in this. Give Paxton the dion waiters award
@Lats Niebling Yes, but the only thing that sucks about this movie is that it's too short. It was longer.
@The Gonad Underrated's underratedness is overrated.
Every fucking comment section has to have this comment, doesn't it?
Was very good, I didn't like the ending though. After he lost his power, it felt like an average, unselfaware action film.
Was it underrated?
This is one of my most rewatched alien invasion action movies. The premise and rules are unique and I really love how it all works out to tell the story. It's very original.
Not that original, there's a light novel, All you need is kill
By watching this movie alone, you basically rewatch this movie cuz technically this movie is all repeated moment with different outcomes
You're stuck in a loop being forced to watch it over and over again.....
Yeah. Original.

It must be so frustrating for Cruise's character to have to go through that so many times, just trying out the most minute changes.

He will be a great Mario player
George Hamilton it was a fun movie.

It is that frustrating. Cage had the weight of the world on his shoulders and he never asked for it. And when he finally took a drink at the bar he got called a coward.
that's me in hitman
2:13 Cage: General, th... this isn't the first time we've had this conversation. Its... because you're stubborn.
Brigham: **stares stubbornly**
Lmao
Isn't the first time. You forgot the fuel dump
It's a trick the general listens when u give a convinced argument
I’ve never seen a face that conveys stubbornness that well before…
When actors are so good that you get annoyed in real life.
If you consider the amount of times he had to restart, it was well over +1000 days. And the fact that each experience is the time of a full day+, this would make almost anyone go clinically insane.
That’s why I liked that they showed one scene of him just escaping everything at that bar to just have a break.
That s way less days than in groundhog day
Now let's think of the fact that when he grew tired of watching Rita die, he decided to do it all over again alone. And it was already next to impossible with her...
It wouldn't make you go insane if you were working toward an achievable goal. If you were stuck in groundhog Day forever your mind would turn to scrambled eggs and you would definitely go insane. But if you're actually able to try different things and see how people reacted, technically that's a different day. People are a lot stronger than you think.
If only he’d say “thank you, General.” Perhaps no one would stop them outside.
It was the stupid secretary.
@@dennisrodriguez3689 it was that he said "Don't shoot him again", so the general knew he has to comply or they kill him
He knew that If they were telling the truth his men couldnt stop them. Only if they were lying. He makes the right choice either way
@@thetruth9803 I never thought about it this way, brilliant!
@@thetruth9803 Good point! Very concise way of thinking about it.
I feel really bad for Rita. She lost her ability to time travel, so every single copy of her in every one of these failed loops leaves her either killed, or alive to witness the loss of the war. It's only that last successful loop where that last copy of her has no idea who he is.
well in the light novel, she died at the end, they just had to change the whole concept of mimic looping ability, just to save her life in the movie
Since his death initiates a reset, it also resets everyone on the planet, doesn't it? That's why, as he starts each day again, no one knows who he is. There are no failed loops with copies of everyone in it.
@@MsCathrynC Unless this is the same concept as in Rick and Morty with the remote that let Morty save his place in time. Instead of erasing mistakes, he "prestiged." So everything actually happened anyway.
The whole world resets so there’s no failed timelines or copies.
@@nandoman4769 The source material doesn't address alternate timelines because they can't interact so it isn't relevant.

Whoever edited and wrote this movie....bravo. The complexity of making all of this work and stay engaging is mind-boggling.
I once heard that this movie are based on an LN called All you need is kill. It even had manga and their mimic (the alien) is... I could say they are cartoonishly disturbing

@@cosmictreason2242 The movie aesthetics and movement would have been impossible to fully capture in a comic panel. I blind bought this several years ago on Black Friday. It is easily one of the best Sci-fi concepts/movies of all time, and near the top of Tom Cruise’s resume in terms of performance. Say what you will about his personal life and beliefs, the man can act when he puts his heart into a role.
Agreed. This, The Last Samurai, Tropic Thunder, and (for what it's worth, and this is just my opinion) Jack Reacher. You could tell he _really_ wanted to do these movies.
@@NaruSanavai Recently watched Collateral where he's a bad guy assassin taking Jamie Foxx hostage in a cab. I think this was before Foxx was famous so its a low key role for him but those two are so good in it. I love Cruise's performance and the whole movie taking place at night in a cab.
My favs have got to be Valkyrie, Minority Report, and Collateral, in that order, but very tightly.
It’s his beliefs and personal life that make him such a good actor, pilot ,father, employer, and on and on… zero time wasted on diversity, equity and inclusion nonsense.
@@perpitraiter Yeah you're right, the world would be so much better if no one cared about diversity, equity and inclusion. No social support, no women in cinema, no parking spots for handicaped people. It's so much better to only care about yourself.

Interestingly enough, the General cannot be blamed for his actions in this particular situation. If I were the General, and I was being told by another soldier that the enemy has the ability to manipulate time, I would have to question what other unknown abilities the enemy might have. They could have been captured by the aliens to try and secure the device and were under some brainwashing to work for the enemy or something to retrieve the device for the aliens.
You make a lot of sense my man Graham
If anything it's suprising that he caves at all, he's aware that the enemy have advanced recon and unbeatable positioning/tactics (with the exception of Verdun), which would be the result of subtrifuge in conventional warfare, alongside unknown alien tech and intelligence. He had every right to be paranoid, how is he not know that these two prominent celebrities (one a genuine war hero and one a war progoganist) aren't mimics in human form or androids designed to retrieve intel, especially after they appear to have completely changed in character (Blunt's war hero turned 'traitor', Cruise's snivelling coward turned badass).

This is based off a very short Japanese novel called “All You Need is Kill” in English. I read it years before this came out. I love this movie, though. The ending is happier. It isn’t a long book. Barely more than a novella, but it is really cool. The essence of the book is in the movie, as far as premise.

With that line he displayed to the general that he is superior to an opponent that can predict the future by allegedly resetting the day and has convinced his best soldier to suggest killing him and that he was willing to acknowledge the general's superiority. He showed humility in the face of pride. That was smart. The reason why is he gave the general what was valuable to him: subordination
>"You are not mentally equipped to fight this thing and you never will be."
And that's the line that won him an ambush. That wasn't smart. The reason why is obvious.
no
This was very smart. But respectfully I disagree. He didn’t show much subordination when he pointed a gun at him. He simply convinced him. He eased him into it. And he knew things he couldn’t have known. He must have in some respect known the importance of the device hence why he kept it in his safe. Probably waiting for the appropriate time to use it. Subjectively a time he was feeling less stubborn and in control. I feel like you’re right about him showing humility. Respecting him and man to man laying the cards on the table. A little background is missing as I can’t quite explain the ambush. My theory is they were just spotted on the way out and the general had no say in the arrest. They were guilty of treason for being there, especially Cage and even the General isn’t the highest in command. They could’ve had orders from elsewhere. That or the general was scared having seen his abilities and even knowing Barnes was telling the truth, still had to be in charge and not be bested or betrayed by Cage. And probably just trying to bomb the Omega himself. Those are my two best guesses. Regardless, I don’t think he was completely unaffected by Barnes’ theory again why he kept the device in his safe. The general seemed more about power. Whether or not he was willing to sacrifice it to Cage, a man pointing a gun at him, the big man in charge, in his own office where he’s been in charge for a long time, is to be inferred by the audience. I think I’d buy the general being on a power trip more, but really my mind could easily be changed in that sense.
@@RightWingCorrectWing Those are all good explanations and I am not saying my one is the cannon. I simply wanted to give another rationalization to the scene from the aspect of bargaining since I wanted to use the "that was/wasn't smart" as a punchline and I had also previously binge watched about 2 hours of charisma on demand.

Criminally underrated master piece.
This is a terrific thriller. I can watch this over and over again.
This is one of the movies that I love to repeat watch.
maybe your stuck in a time loop
3:43 Even though the general hands Cage the device, he makes the exact same face he did at the start of the movie when Cage tries to blackmail him into not going to the beach and he says "don't worry, you won't be".
The general always intended to arrest them when they left. Just like he tried to arrest Cage when he left the very first time.
I know Oscar nominated Brendan Gleeson isn't top billing in this movie but so glad he, Tom and Emily got to act together in a movie. Yay.
I love when the background noises and music is louder than the dialog.
I would ask him for a code that would prove this is not nonsense.
Conundrum
Wouldn't work. Whatever the "code" is, it would seem like a parlor trick. They came in telling him stuff about events that were just about to happen, stuff they couldn't possibly know, like who was calling and when, when the secretary was coming in the room, stuff she left out of the papers she brought in, etc. If he told him a secret only he would know, he would have still questioned it on the next loop. Maybe eventually they would have found a way, but it's also difficult to do/say the exact same thing at the exact same time, let alone be in the room at the exact millisecond they may need to be to have a chat with him in a moment that would work. Get there 5 minutes early or late, and the entire conversation/circumstances could change, right down to what the general was thinking about or doing the moment he came in the room, which could drastically effect how receptive he is to them. That also means they wouldn't have to do all the same exact things throughout earlier in the day, in order to be there at that exact moment again too. So there will be variables/differences every single loop, simply because you can't possibly do every single action exactly the same as you did it before.
Wouldn't work.
He said he can't rationally explain already what they've been doing. Being a high-tier military commander of a position of world-defense fighting crazy space creatures capable of wonders nobody has ever seen, you don't *easily* give up anything.
Especially not to a sniveling worm you punished not 24 hours who seems to have had a personality change. It may have nothing to do with what he's saying, but what he said before, that the general doesn't trust him. My god, given the opening conversation they had, it's miracle he even got into the room.
Meanwhile a military officer won't tell you that code, because invariably you could gas him into forgetting he ever told you it, or were ever there, and then come back tomorrow and give him the code.
Whether or not it's rational, or belies some kind of meaningful code that you *may* have acquired by coersion of a close family or individual of your past, or if some psychologist perhaps managed to incept the idea of a concept into your mind --- in any event, military secrets are classified. You don't share them. It isn't about whether you deem it prudent - you have commanders and the chain of command to certify whether or not a person should be deemed worthy of classified material or recquisitioning military assets.
But I like your thinking, in a lot of situations it's GREAT to have a passcode.
many flag grade military commanders simply dont have that "leap of faith" , even if their gut is telling them otherwise. im sure there is a long laundry list of reasons as to why this is the case, but im going to delve into it further [for now].

This is basically playing a video game that is real life. You keep failing and or dying until you achieve victory. But the thing I like the most about this concept is you can interact with these same people over and over. You get to learn so much about them. Depending on what you do, say, or how you say it, determines a different outcome than the last, which is just so fascinating to me.
It would be interesting to see how Omega is searching as well all that time.
This and Oblivion are my two favorite Tom Cruise films and in my opinion, two of the best science fiction films in recent years!

If he used the device and died the omega would know that they know its location and relocate. he should have used it in front of the general and tell him it's in France. Nuke it. Player 1 wins. GG
That sounds nice, but you do know that nukes now are larger than Fat Man and Little Boy during WWII and don't just destroy cities.

Everytime he dies in the movie, that timeline stays, and his death is definite, but his soul moves onto another branch of said timeline, where he starts back from the same moment on the same day.

The General was actually clever. From his perspective, these two are insane but they are threatening him at gunpoint. So best to give them what they want and then let them walk away for 2 minutes and give the order to a platoon of soldiers to surround them.
I don’t think the General is clever at all, he’s quite stupid. There’s no way they could have known everything they told him, without manipulating time and having been in that situation 50+ times already. Also usually 2 insane people don’t work together so cohesively. What they told him made complete sense, especially in the context of the movie
The fact your comment has 29 likes and mine only 5, shows how low IQ the majority of people actually are. Again, there’s no logical way they could know all that ahead of time without their story being valid/true. The general should’ve put 2 and 2 together
@@charlesg7926 even if they are being truthful, what you'd want to do is to capture them to get more intel from them, corroborate their info, and plan things out better with other experts and generals. I sure as hell won't leave the fate of the world to 2 folks who just threatened me at gunpoint

The fact an Irish General is the Head of the global forces shows how the world has lost a lot. Ireland is a small country and one of the last two standing in Europe (other than Britian). So he's watched militaries all across Europe, Asia, Africa etc be wiped out. Billions dead.
All that's left is South America, North America, Britain, Ireland, East Russia, East China, Japan, Korea, Phillipines, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand. Everything else is gone. He has the responsibility of keeping what's left intact and saving the billions left.
Taking a risk on a what they are saying would in fact be stupid. They could have intersepted memos, known about the flight, researched the secretaries background. He can't risk them being right when they could be gone mad.
This man went from highest ranking officer in ireland to head of a global defense force. Probably given the title as he has the most experience of any one fighting them in command.
I see why he wouldn't trust them. Note he didn't instruct his men to kill them. He probably wanted them taken in and question but they both know they don't have that time so killed themselves to reset time.
One of the most criminally underrated movies of all time. Most people have never even heard of it!
I wonder if that timeline ceases to exist or if every time Tom Cruises character died at the hands of Rita she still went on existing in a doomed world. What a shitty way to discover multiverse time travel theory is real.
Not exactly, if is based in the novel only his memory travels to the past, in other words that future never existed.
@@andresnoboa2092 his memory traveling back doesn't seem to equate with that doomed world not existing for some reason

@@valinorean4816 I'm afraid you missed the point. Fauzul is saying that each time he goes back, the 'old' universe doesn't just vanish - it runs its course. Every time he goes back in time the protagonist creates a new timeline from the same point, a copy instead of a replacement.
