the funny thing is that is actually happened in the manga
Cruise waked up after killing the Alpha and it's just normal replay
And in order to really end the circle, Cruise had to kill Vrita ( the other one who has the ability, just in the manga, in the film she has losted it ) to end the circle AND he got to keep his ability to continue fighting for the world

this movie was criminally underated.
I respectfully disagree, this movie was garbage, proof that fancy effects won't save you from people noticing the giant plot holes and the absolute rip-off of Groundhog Day.
Plot holes aside, any movie includes the character re-living each day is a rip off of Groundhog Day? The movies are completely different in the use of that element. Groundhog Day has Murray just becoming a better/nicer individual and then he just wakes up one day and he's living a normal life again. This movie has the character actually defeating the mechanism that created the re-runs. Critical thinking dude. Get some.
Makoto Mikami ... Groundhog Day was a comedy. Besides the repeating day concept, how are they remotely similar?
this has nothing to do with groundhog day. It's based of a manga of the same consept.
because of fault in our stars
One of the most satisfying endings I've ever seen. That smile was priceless. This is exactly how I felt after watching this movie. The whole movie was fun, so engaging, and action-packed. No wonder this will become a classic among action/sci-fi films.
I think the only thing that would have made it better is if after Cage chuckled, he called her “Rose” and then the film cut.
The manga tore me up, it was sad
Agreed, #1 rule of film: happy ending. #2; good music. #3: Tom Cruise smiling.
Max Eisenhardt I just finished watching Edge of Tomorrow, it was great. Then I watched it again right away because the ending is not at the end, its at the beginning. The big blue guy gets his revenge and keeps Tom Cruise in a permanenr loop.
I'll have to watch it.
He might not have been Major material at the start, but now he absolutely deserves it. Skill wise, achievement wise too
Hell he deserve more he saved the human race along with everyone they deserve better
dude should be commander in chief after allat
He was major material so long as he was confined to his field of expertise, P.R.
Are you kidding me!!!
He is beyond anything in the US army rank. In fact he could be called a super soldier.
This ending always made me so sad. The thousands of hours he spent getting to know these people and they can’t remember him.
Knowing they are safe and sound is satisfying enough for him :-) a true hero doesn't need attention.
He's got plenty of time to get to know them again, and he's skilled as hell at this point so he can impress them too.
Not to mention he can explain to her what happened
It might not have been just thousands but millions of hours. Possibly many actual lifetimes.
It's not so bad. They only ever knew him for up to 24 hours at a time. Easily recapturable.
one of the very rare action-sci-fi movies that you can binge-watch over and over, but still will not get tired of.
Read the manga it’s fire but a sadder ending

Are you OK, did you kill an Omega why are you doing the same thing over and over again.
I love that he laughs cause she is still rude to him despite the fact he is a Major again. 😂
Haha
Yeah, but you can still see her respecting the rank in a subtle way.
When he’s a private, she’s cold and dismissive toward him because she outranks him. Now he outranks her and she’s questioning and curious, though still rude in her own way.
Jack Daone you did good in English literature didn’t you 😂
Im so glad Rita is still alive, shes probably the literally only person who could fully sympathize with him.
The squad is still alive and fucking around but you'll probably never be able to remake that death-bond comrade level of friendship.
Its a perfect ending because it leaves you wanting more. Everybody wants to see cage and rita share a moment of success. Probably in Edge of tomorrow 2 - Return of the Mimics
You can feel everything in that smile. This is why I love this movie.
Only Tom Cruise can smile like that.

I just realised; Going into battle Rita Vrataski was well aware that the mimics would know they were coming due to time reversion, and that she would almost certainly die. She willingly walked into a deathtrap without flinching. That is some special kind of badass.
At the very end fight ?
@@marvin2678In every fight we've seen in the movie
I don’t think that’s 100% accurate - only after she found out about cage and that the invasion is a total devastation she realizes that the successful battle of Verdun was merely a trap leading toward the “end game” of humankind.
Were you even paying attention ehong? Rita wasn't some kind of elite soldier, she had that time reversion herself for verdun.
Losing the power means the aliens had them back, so yes every battle after verdun just means losing battle and she knows it.

It’s pretty symbolic with how everyone saluted him at the end while before they didn’t bat an eye on him. They did it because he’s a major, but narratively, if you look behind it, it’s basically because he fought multiple battles and saved the world. In the beginning, his title was just a title that even the general didn’t respect him with, but now he has EARNED that title, like someone who has returned from a long war as a hero.
EDIT: Some people are not understanding it here, but I’m saying that this scene is a narrative symbolism. It’s meant for us to
interpret it, not the characters to be aware of it.
general didnt respect him cuz the general is a way higher rank than him
@@jrsthesedays925 Thats not a basis for disrespect. i never had disrespect from my superiors (not based on my rank that is :D ) The general did not respect the "Television Soldier" what Cage was. Field officers tend to have a little less respect towards those who sit behind the safety of their desks / or camera while them and their soldiers are putting their lives at risk every day, every hour.
add that Cage was pretty arrogant and he did not help his case when he wanted to blackmail the general.
I am sure if he would turn up in the General's office "now", he would still not respect him, because Major Cage was a TV celebrity and he arrived when there is no longer a risk. (obviously the General has no recollection of memories of the "previous" encounters (which were in the future?!))
No, a General wont disrespect a Major just because one outranks the other. but Cage was a puppet a highly decorated TV commentator. :) a sales person :) (no offence towards sales people, but you get the point)
@@mityaboy4639 good point I completely forgot he was a mega pog in the movie
And nobody's knows the sacrifice he made only him kinda sad if you ask me
No, it's because he looped back to before he ticked off the general and got sent to the front line to get killed and start the looping. Those grunts merely saw the rank device and showed the usual deference on that alone.
This smile has all in it.
- He smiles, because she is she, and so she is rude to him, his range is nothing for she.
- He smiles, because he knows what she doesn't know in this moment: That they will come together, after he will told her the solution, they gained together.
- He smiles, because he loves her. And he is glad, she lives.
And so many more.

Just last month, I let my girlfriend watch it for the first time. Kinda funny she loved it so much, especially the ending.
Yeah I only got to watch it yesterday after reading some random tips on the tv shows of the day on an italian e-journal. Never heard of it before, and I don't live outside the world... weird.
This is one movie where I wouldn’t change a second of it. Excellent from start to finish.
The most uplifting and happy movie ending I can think of.
its actually a bad ending because he will relive life from that point forever having to relive everyting.. again and again and again.. and everyone around you wont remember a single thing everytime
Not sure if you've actually seen the movie or what but he won't be reliving anything from that point on since the "creature" has been killed and that was the last time repeat that's going to happen.
Master Penguin Actually as the other guy said that's the last time loop that he's on, this is it.
It's only a downer if you assume he fucks up somehow and doesn't get with her. I like to assume Cruise gets laid again.
The ending in the original light novel and manga is bittersweet, nothing like this. I vastly prefer the movie ending over them.
@@peterklick2385 They're fucking nothing like each other to begin with. Literally the only three similarities are exoskeletons, alien invasion and Time loop. That's where it ends.

They should do a second one but as a prequel to show her story from when she had that power
But have the same ending here
I think she still has it. He's in his uniform, since the ending is her first time seeing him wearing one, she's suppose to stand at attention and salute the rank, instead, she greeted him as she did before. Hence his smile.
She doesn't remember she's already lost it by this point in time.
He's still got the power though, he lost the power from the Alpha from the blood transfusion but gained the power from the Omega in the ending right there.

The worst part about tom's ordeal was that no one would ever know he went through all that and saved the world. Theyd probably still think he was an armchair major
Right up until they saw his epic combat skills at which point they would be wiping the drool off their faces....
Rita and the other scientist dude would know.
It doesn't matter to him now, he lives and he knows the most important person to him will believe in his story... And he still can kick the ass out of any guy who questions his skill

Rita and the scientist would know if he told them
As someone who watch and read a lot of alternate horror:
Here's the _horror_ twist you can have:
_Every time he dies - old age, accidents, the war - it NEVER stops and he has to do it all again for eternity_
He can lift up the curse by making a death pending or coma situation
Unless he just gets a blood change ever.
Re Zero had a different approach. Every time the main character died, the world still continued. In one scene, we see how much he fucked up the world and characters with his deaths and reckless suicides

Doug Liman is a genius director, and he really knows how to end a film. Compare this with the ending scene of the Bourne Identity, it’s a similar feeling, even down to the same font in the credits!
I'm glad the movie doesn't follow up how the manga (original story) ends
@@rifkiarza6590 how does it end btw? im okay with spoils
@@chaptereight3406 Firstly, there's no such a thing called alfa and omega in manga (if im not wrong) but instead the main character able to back from death because there's such a thing called server. So in the manga, the mc didn't stop his back from death ability by killing the omega (I forgot which one from the movie) but he stop it by killing rita. So the manga ended up with rita's dead and the humans suddenly manage to win from he alien (mimic)
@@rifkiarza6590 yeah but movie mimic looks way cooler with all the fast paced movements
Liman is still the best director for the Bourne series. His movie (the first one) has more 'identity' (no pun intended) compared to Greengrass's films. Better pacing, deeper, more grounded, more emotional, and has the better storytelling. Perfect balance of story and action.
Let me explain the ending to those who don't understand. Tom Cruise is the only one who knows he and the Full Metal B**** ended the war. Everyone else thinks it was a joint effort. Cruise smiles in the end when she greets him rudely like she did the first time he met her because now he has to explain to her that they single handedly ended the war by themselves. The movie implies she will believe him because he already knows she had the reset power In the battle she helped win, and knows about it already. The only question we are left with though, is will she love him back when he tells her they fell in love during their journey. This movie was too good. RIP Bill Paxton :(
But that isn't the real question though, the real question is: why did the day reset when the omega blood touched Tom, Tom got a new life and the omega didn't?
the blood killed him but the omega wasnt dead so there was a split in the timeline. The omega survived in another timeline so no reset in that timeline but the split timeline reset and thats now Cage's.
@djhavok101 Well that part is clear. However I don't understand if he did reset the day, how is that it is different from before?
@djhavok101 Well that is one way to explain it, but it still bugs me somehow. Why does the aliens who can travel space and time (an other dimensional being) want something from human? Why can't they just travel to a specific time to attack Earth or try and rewind time over and over until they win? And an other Omega just make the whole plot messed up.
@djhavok101 I think that the time rewinding ability is something the alien can't actively control. It is only activated when some condition is met (like a life threatening situation). The alien fully aware of this and they make use of their "built-in" ability as a hunting mechanism to get to know their prey then attack. At the end of the movie, Cage regains this ability right before he die, and somehow twisted it a little since his death is a slow death and "natural", not a swift one as a hunted prey like before. Thus, he affected this mechanism and messed with the time line a bit as the general mentioned the explosion in France and the death of the Omega in the past which happen in an alternated present.
Tom Cruise is such a magnificent actor that you can see in this scene how different his attitude is in his face and eyes compared to the first scene where he looks like a playboy coming from a party in this scene you can see in him the transformation that was produced in him through the crucible of battle and his hardening as a true veteran

Seen this movie about 4-5 times now (just finished watching it again) and i still enjoy watching it. One of the best movie I've seen in along time.... and because of emily blunt.
5 X for me
Man this movie was LIT! The ending hit me to the core and I remember, I spent almost 2 hours overthinking how's he gonna tell her about what the fuck happened
Exactly. I wish we could see another movie of them together
@@MKRCinema nope, this ending is perfect.
@@djpunyer8762 true
im you at Verdun. its very simple to explain it to her.
I apologize to everyone for the fact that I waited 9 years to watch this movie
The small chuckle at the end instantly turned this into my favorite movie the first time I watched it.
"Yes? What do you want?"
Pretty sure that's not how a sergeant should address a major.
Except the fact that sergeant is a war hero from poster who also experienced hundreds of timeloops.
@@andreygilev3942 And? Rank is rank. She should still address him as sir.
@@tonyj9743 Or she just couldn't give two shits anymore. She's been living life on repeat
@@tonyj9743 She's such a famous war hero she knows she can get away with being rude to a Major. Probably not to a Colonel or General though.
@@Fishfingers232 Your idea of war heroism is a bit lopsided. Everyone on active duty is a hero. Anyone who has done what she had (if that was even possible) is even more so. But, rank is rank. An essential part of understanding the value of a rank is recognizing that you could be great at something and someone who outranks you maybe not - you cuss about it in private, among friends. But when that senior officer outranking you shows up... especially in a military base, IN official capacity, you show respect. In the field, during an active firefight, you might forget or be unable to spend the extra few seconds to show paper respect (calling the person with higher rank sir/ma'am, etc.), and that is generally not taken into account all that much. I don't know if you've served, and I am not very familiar with US armed service norms if that's where you served, but from my personal experience - it is important to respect the rank.
There is also the matter of having operational command authorization - if you are the highest-ranking officer/soldier on the ground at any point of time, it is your duty to act as temporary command unless there is an established comms with HQ/anyone else that has ground command clearance (weird shit) and they mention otherwise. Similarly, if you are anyone who finds themselves in the company of a higher ranking officer who has assumed official capacity, it is your duty to respect and follow orders that they provide.
Saw this movie today. Can't beleive I missed out on this movie for so long🙆🏾♂️❤😭. Just noticed the significance of "Can you love me again"🙆🏾♂️ My mind was too busy reeling from how amazing this was.
That smile, those teary eyes...thats LOVE and relief my brothers!
That smile, it contains all the joy, sadness, relief and joy of the movie
Knowing he had only one last chance made him super cognizant of every detail. Cruise did a great job of putting that wistfulness into these shots.
I love this ending *so much!* Just Tom's acting at the end and the editing is *PERFECT.* His growing smile, seeing the tears well up in his eyes, to just this amazed breathy laugh of pure relief, IMMEDIATE CUT to *Love Me Again* by John Newman.
because... You *know* it's a happy ending. They did it, they won, and while "oh she doesn't remember any of it" She *never* remembered any of it any other time they did it. But they established before that he knows *exactly* what to say to make her believe he'd been resetting as she did. So it makes perfect sense to just cut there in that moment of breathless astonished relief that *"holy shit. We did it. Everythings okay."* UGH I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
This movie is so damn underrated. It's tremendous and a true action/scifi classic.
He has so many movies that are just some of the best..... including this one.

the sad thing is that J-squad will probably not remember those heroic moments they did to save the earth
"When you do everything right, no one will notice" - tao te ching
That smile says everything - the rude response from her is funny at this point, he gets to see her again, and it will be so easy to convince her of everything.
A very enjoyable experience watching, rewatching over an indeterminate number of times.
why the hell is this movie so underrated man?
it is so interesting
This is best movie in my life.

Thank you, Tom, for "War of the worlds" and " Edge of tomorrow"
these are my 2 favorite films
Loved this movie. I kept watching some bits very often and I can't wait for the sequel!
Rita : "What do you want"
Tom smiles
Next scene
"On your feet maggot
Tom : "Ahh shit here we go again"
Pretty sure wont happen because now he is major and she is only sergeant
He is the Omega?
@@addicz2 The omega already killed, the blue egg exploded.
@@hattaamran7348 Its blood is on Cage. Similar when he rechive Alpha's blood.
Look at the ending scene. Same but different situation. Same Alien invation. Humen on the winning side. Just because no one controling the Mimics. Correction. Not no one. Not because no Omega. But Cage/Omega did not control the Mimics. Cage enter the Alternate Universe.
My favorite ending of all movies, the use of music is so good
This movie was so fire, I never thought I would like a movie this much. Never wanted it to end
Just went back and watched this movie again. Heavily underrated. Really solid movie
